We prove an infinite family of Hecke-like congruences for the overpartition function modulo powers of 2. Starting from a recent identity of Garvan and Morrow and iterating Atkin's $U_2$ operator, we determine lower bounds on the 2-adic valuations of the coefficients that arise at each step. Our approach yields new modular equations relating the Hauptmoduln $G_2$ on $Γ_0(2)$ and $G_8$ on $Γ_0(8)$, together with explicit $U_2$-action formulas.
In 2009, Corteel, Savelief and Vuletić generalized the concept of overpartitions to a new object called plane overpartitions. In recent work, the author considered a restricted form of plane overpartitions called $k$-rowed plane overpartions and proved a method to obtain congruences for these and other types of combinatorial generating functions. In this paper, we prove several restricted and unrestricted plane overpartition congruences modulo $4$ and $8$ using other techniques.
Recently, Nayaka and Naika (2022) proved several congruences modulo $16$ and $32$ for $t$-colored overpartitions with $t=5,7,11$ and $13$. We extend their list using an algorithmic technique.
By considering the $M_2$-rank of an overpartition as well as a residual crank, we give another combinatorial refinement of the congruences $\overline{\mbox{spt}}_2(3n)\equiv \overline{\mbox{spt}}_2(3n+1)\equiv 0\pmod{3}$. Here $\overline{\mbox{spt}}_2(n)$ is the total number of occurrences of the smallest parts among the overpartitions of $n$ where the smallest part is even and not overlined. Our proof depends on Bailey's Lemma and the rank difference formulas of Lovejoy and Osburn for the $M_2$-rank of an overpartition. This congruence, along with a modulo $5$ congruence, has previously been …
Bringmann, Lovejoy, and Osburn showed that the generating functions of the spt-overpartition functions spt(n), spt1(n), spt2(n), and M2spt(n) are quasimock theta functions, and satisfy a number of simple Ramanujan-like congruences. Andrews, Garvan, and Liang defined an spt-crank in terms of weighted vector partitions which combinatorially explain simple congruences mod 5 and 7 for spt (n). Chen, Ji, and Zang were able to define this spt-crank in terms of ordinary partitions. In this paper we define spt-cranks in terms of vector partitions that combinatorially explain the known simple congruenc…
We present two new Ramanujan-type congruences modulo 5 for overpartition. We also give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Dou and Lin, which includes four congruences modulo 25 for overpartition.
Let $\overline{p}_{j,k}(n)$ denotes the number of $(j,k)$-regular overpartitions of a positive integer $n$ such that none of the parts is congruent to $j$ modulo $k$. Naika et. al. (2021) proved infinite families of congruences modulo powers of 2 for $\overline{p}_{3,6}(n)$, $\overline{p}_{5,10}(n)$ and $\overline{p}_{9,18}(n)$. In this paper, we obtain infinite families of congruences modulo power of 2 for $\overline{p}_{4,8}(n)$, $\overline{p}_{6,12}(n)$ and $\overline{p}_{8,16}(n)$. For example, we prove that, for all integers $n\geq 0$ and $α\geq 0$, $$ \overline{p}_{4,8}\left( 5^{2α+1}\le…
Recently, Shen (2016) and Alanazi et al. (2016) studied the arithmetic properties of the $\ell$-regular overpartition function $\overline{A}_\ell (n)$, which counts the number of overpartitions of $n$ into parts not divisible by $\ell$. In this note, we will present some new congruences modulo $5$ when $\ell$ is a power of $5$.
We investigate Ramanujan congruences for the function which counts the overpartitions of n with restricted odd differences. In particular, we show that only one such congruence exists. Our method involves using the theory of modular forms to prove a more general theorem which bounds the number of primes possible for Ramanujan congruences in certain eta-quotients. This generalizes work done by Jonah Sinick. We also provide two congruences modulo 5 for this function.

Let $\overline{p}(n)$ be the number of overpartitions of $n$, we establish and give a short elementary proof of the following congruence \[\overline{p}({{4}^{α}}(40n+35))\equiv 0 \, (\bmod \, 40),\] where $α,n $ are nonnegative integers. By letting $α=0$ we proved a conjecture of Hirschhorn and Sellers. Some new congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo 3 and 5 have also been found, including the following two infinite families of Ramanujan-type congruences: for any integers $n\ge 0$ and $α\ge 1$, \[\overline{p}({{5}^{2α+1}}(5n+1))\equiv \overline{p}({{5}^{2α+1}}(5n+4))\equiv 0 \, (\bmod \, 5).…
Bringmann and Lovejoy introduced a rank for overpartition pairs and investigated its role in congruence properties of $\bar{pp}(n)$, the number of overpartition pairs of n. In particular, they applied the theory of Klein forms to show that there exist many Ramanujan-type congruences for the number $\bar{pp}(n)$. In this paper, we shall derive two Ramanujan-type identities and some explicit congruences for $\bar{pp}(n)$. Moreover, we find three ranks as combinatorial interpretations of the fact that $\bar{pp}(n)$ is divisible by three for any n. We also construct infinite families of congruence…
In 2017, Andrews, Dixit, Schultz and Yee introduced the function $\overline{\textrm{spt}}_ω(n)$, which denotes the number of smallest parts in the overpartitions of $n$ in which the smallest part is always overlined and all odd parts are less than twice the smallest part. Recently, Baruah and Begum established several internal congruences and congruences modulo small powers of $5$ for $\overline{\textrm{spt}}_ω(n)$. Moreover, they conjectured a family of internal congruences modulo any powers of $5$ and two families of congruences modulo any even powers of $5$. In this paper, we confirm three …
We prove infinitely many congruences modulo 3, 5, and powers of 2 for the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n)$ and two smallest parts functions: $\bar{\operatorname{spt1}}(n)$ for overpartitions and $\operatorname{M2spt}(n)$ for partitions without repeated odd parts. These resemble the Hecke-type congruences found by Atkin for the partition function $p(n)$ in 1966 and Garvan for the smallest parts function $\operatorname{spt}(n)$ in 2010. The proofs depend on congruences between the generating functions for $\bar{p}(n)$, $\bar{\operatorname{spt1}}(n),$ and $\operatorname{M2spt}(n)$ and eigenfor…
It was recently shown that $qω(q)$, where $ω(q)$ is one of the third order mock theta functions, is the generating function of $p_ω(n)$, the number of partitions of a positive integer $n$ such that all odd parts are less than twice the smallest part. In this paper, we study the overpartition analogue of $p_ω(n)$, and express its generating function in terms of a ${}_3ϕ_{2}$ basic hypergeometric series and an infinite series involving little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. This is accomplished by obtaining a new seven parameter $q$-series identity which generalizes a deep identity due to the first auth…
In a recent paper, Andrews and Newman introduced certain families of partition functions using the minimal excludant or "mex" function. In this article, we study two of the families of functions Andrews and Newman introduced, namely $p_{t,t}(n)$ and $p_{2t,t}(n)$. We establish identities connecting the ordinary partition function $p(n)$ to $p_{t,t}(n)$ and $p_{2t,t}(n)$ for all $t\geq 1$. Using these identities, we prove that the Ramanujan's famous congruences for $p(n)$ are also satisfied by $p_{t,t}(n)$ and $p_{2t,t}(n)$ for infinitely many values of $t$. Very recently, da Silva and Sellers …
Let $\bar{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. It was conjectured by Hirschhorn and Sellers that $\bar{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 40)$ for $n\geq 0$. Employing 2-dissection formulas of quotients of theta functions due to Ramanujan, and Hirschhorn and Sellers, we obtain a generating function for $\bar{p}(40n+35)$ modulo 5. Using the $(p, k)$-parametrization of theta functions given by Alaca, Alaca and Williams, we give a proof of the congruence $\bar{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 5)$. Combining this congruence and the congruence $\bar{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 8)$ obtai…
In this paper, we generalize recent work of Mizuhara, Sellers, and Swisher that gives a method for establishing restricted plane partition congruences based on a bounded number of calculations. Using periodicity for partition functions, our extended technique could be a useful tool to prove congruences for certain types of combinatorial functions based on a bounded number of calculations. As applications of our result, we establish new and existing restricted plane partition congruences, restricted plane overpartition congruences and several examples of restricted partition congruences.
Let $B_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with certain difference condition and let $A_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with certain congruence condition. The Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon theorem states that $B_{k,i}(n)=A_{k,i}(n)$. Lovejoy obtained an overpartition analogue of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon theorem for the cases $i=1$ and $i=k$. We find an overpartition analogue of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon theorem in the general case. Let $D_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of overpartitions of $n$ satisfying certain difference condition and $C_{k,i}(n)$ be the number of overpartition…
Ramanujan famously found congruences for the partition function like p(5n+4) = 0 modulo 5. We provide a method to find all simple congruences of this type in the coefficients of the inverse of a modular form on Gamma_{1}(4) which is non-vanishing on the upper half plane. This is applied to answer open questions about the (non)-existence of congruences in the generating functions for overpartitions, crank differences, and 2-colored F-partitions.
Let $\overline{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. Recently, Fortin-Jacob-Mathieu and Hirschhorn-Sellers independently obtained 2-, 3- and 4-dissections of the generating function for $\overline{p}(n)$ and derived a number of congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo $4$, $8$ and $64$ including $\overline{p}(5n+2)\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, $\overline{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0 \pmod{8}$ and $\overline{p}(8n+7)\equiv 0 \pmod{64}$. By employing dissection techniques, Yao and Xia obtained congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo $8, 16$ and $32$, such as $\overline{p}(48n+26) \equiv 0 \pmod{8}$, $\o…
Let $\overline{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. Hirschhorn and Sellers showed that $\overline{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0 \pmod{8}$ for $n\geq 0$. They also conjectured that $\overline{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0 \pmod{40}$ for $n\geq 0$. Chen and Xia proved this conjecture by using the $(p,k)$-parametrization of theta functions given by Alaca, Alaca and Williams. In this paper, we show that $\overline{p}(5n)\equiv (-1)^{n}\overline{p}(4\cdot 5n) \pmod{5}$ for $n \geq 0$ and $\overline{p}(n)\equiv (-1)^{n}\overline{p}(4n)\pmod{8}$ for $n \geq 0$ by using the relation of the generating function o…
Let ${\overline{p}_{3}}(n)$ be the number of overpartition triples of $n$. By elementary series manipulations, we establish some congruences for ${\overline{p}}_{3}(n)$ modulo small powers of 2, such as \[{\overline{p}_{3}}(16n+14)\equiv 0 \pmod{32}, \quad {\overline{p}_{3}}(8n+7)\equiv 0 \pmod{64}.\] We also find many arithmetic properties for ${\overline{p}_{3}}(n)$ modulo 7, 9 and 11, involving the following infinite families of Ramanujan-type congruences: for any integers $α\ge 1$ and $n \ge 0$, we have ${\overline{p}_{3}}\big({{3}^{2α+1}}(3n+2)\big)\equiv 0$ (mod $9\cdot 2^4$), $\overline…
We give a simple and a more explicit proof of a mod $4$ congruence for a series involving the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials which arose in a recent study of a certain restricted overpartition function.
The study of Ramanujan-type congruences for functions specific to additive number theory has a long and rich history. Motivated by recent connections between divisor sums and overpartitions via congruences in arithmetic progressions, we investigate the existence and classification of Ramanujan-type congruences for functions in multiplicative number theory.
We prove analytic and combinatorial identities reminiscent of Schur's classical partition theorem. Specifically, we show that certain families of overpartitions whose parts satisfy gap conditions are equinumerous with partitions whose parts satisfy congruence conditions. Furthermore, if small parts are excluded, the resulting overpartitions are generated by the product of a modular form and Gordon and McIntosh's universal mock theta function. Finally, we give an interpretation for the universal mock theta function at real arguments in terms of certain conditional probabilities.
We prove explicit congruences modulo powers of arbitrary primes for three smallest parts functions: one for partitions, one for overpartitions, and one for partitions without repeated odd parts. The proofs depend on $\ell$-adic properties of certain modular forms and mock modular forms of weight $3/2$ with respect to the Hecke operators $T(\ell^{2m})$.
Let $p_k(n)$ be given by the $k$-th power of the Euler Product $\prod _{n=1}^{\infty}(1-q^n)^k=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_k(n)q^{n}$. By investigating the properties of the modular equations of the second and the third order under the Atkin $U$-operator, we determine the generating functions of $p_{8k}(2^{2α} n +\frac{k(2^{2α}-1)}{3})$ $(1\leq k\leq 3)$ and $p_{3k} (3^{2β}n+\frac{k(3^{2β}-1)}{8})$ $(1\leq k\leq 8)$ in terms of some linear recurring sequences. Combining with a result of Engstrom about the periodicity of linear recurring sequences modulo $m$, we obtain infinite families of congruences…
In this paper we compute asymptotics for the coefficients of an infinite class of overpartition rank generating functions. Using these results, we show that $ \overline{N}(a,c,n), $ the number of overpartitions of $ n $ with rank congruent to $ a $ modulo $ c, $ is equidistributed with respect to $ 0\le a< c, $ for any $ c\ge2, $ as $ n\to\infty $ and, in addition, we prove some inequalities between ranks of overpartitions conjectured by Ji, Zhang and Zhao (2018), and Wei and Zhang (2018) for $ n=6 $ and $ n=10. $
Using that the overpartition rank function is the holomorphic part of a harmonic Maass form, we deduce formulas for the rank differences modulo 7. To do so we make improvements on the current state of the overpartition rank function in terms of harmonic Maass forms by giving simple formulas for the transformations under $\mbox{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ as well as formulas for orders at cusps.
