Precise measurement of radiation has long played a vital role in a wide range of research and industrial fields, from fundamental physics beyond the Standard Model to medical imaging such as time-of-flight positron emission tomography. Developing radiation detectors that achieve high timing precision-on the order of a few tens of picoseconds-and energy measurement capabilities remains indispensable yet challenging. In this study, we developed two types of scintillator-integrated microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes (SCI-IMPs), one incorporating barium fluoride, and the other bismuth germanate, to enable simultaneous high-precision timing and energy measurements. To evaluate their performance over a wide energy range from keV- to GeV-scale, electron-positron annihilation gamma rays and cosmic ray muons were used. For energy measurements, both detectors achieved an energy resolution of approximately 35% at 511 keV. For timing measurements using 511 keV, coincidence time resolutions (CTRs) of approximately 50 ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) were obtained for both detectors. In contrast, for cosmic ray muon experiments where cosmic ray muon energy is typically on the order of GeV, CTRs were measured to be 25.1 and 16.8 ps FWHM for barium fluoride- and bismuth germanate-based detectors, respectively. The versatile scintillator-integration technique established in this study can broaden the applicability of the newly developed SCI-IMPs. In particular, these results demonstrate that the developed detectors push the boundaries of timing performance while retaining energy measurement and hold promise for future applications in fundamental physics experiments and medical imaging.
The performance of several trigger counters based on plastic scintillators with silicon photomultiplier readout is investigated with cosmic rays. Efficiency and time resolution are measured using digital waveform analysis. The obtained results are relevant for trigger subsystems of Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) and Baryonic Matter at the Nuclotron (BM@N) at the NICA heavy-ion collider. The results show very high efficiency and good timing performance of the counters.
We present light yield and uniformity measurements of square and hexagonal tiles read out with silicon photomultipliers via a Y11 wavelength-shifting fiber or directly from the side or from the center at the top face. All tiles are 3~mm thick and have an area of $\rm 9~cm^2$. The sides are wrapped with two layers of Teflon tape while top and bottom faces are covered with two layers of Tyvec paper. We further show the first light yield and uniformity measurements of ATLAS Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) tiles with MPPC readout. This study has been motivated by looking into a possible phase 3 upgrade…
Measurements are presented of the reduction of signal output due to radiation damage for plastic scintillator tiles used in the hadron endcap (HE) calorimeter of the CMS detector. The tiles were exposed to particles produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to a delivered luminosity of 50 fb$^{-1}$. The measurements are based on readout channels of the HE that were instrumented with silicon photomultipliers, and are derived using data from several sources: a laser calibration system, a movable radioactive source, as well as …
We report the first clear observation of neutron/gamma-ray pulse-shape sensitivity of a fully-instrumented 8 $\times$ 8 array of plastic scintillator segments coupled to two 5 cm $\times$ 5 cm 64-channel SiPM arrays as part of a study of the key metrics of a prototype antineutrino detector module designed for directional sensitivity. SANDD (a Segmented AntiNeutrino Directional Detector) will eventually comprise a central module of 64 elongated segments of $^{6}$Li-doped pulse-shape-sensitive scintillator rods, each with a square cross section of 5.4 mm $\times$ 5.4 mm, surrounded by larger cro…
Photon readout of plastic scintillators is investigated with the aim of improving the precision of neutron \b{eta} decay experiments. Neutron decay is nowadays studied with high statistics, based on up to 109 registered decay events, and leads to strongly improved limits on new physics beyond the standard model, with \b{eta}s often registered in plastic scintillators. The main systematic errors in these experiments are due to imperfect characterization of the scintillators with respect to linearity, energy resolution, and electron backscattering. We study whether these errors can be diminished…
Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.

We describe a complete end-to-end simulation of the response of scintillator counters to charged particles. The counters were extruded with a titanium dioxide surface coating and two channels for the embedded wavelength-shifting fibers which are read out by silicon photomultipliers. The simulation includes the production and propagation of scintillation and Cerenkov photons, the response of the silicon photomultipliers, and the generation of the signal waveforms. Probability lookup tables are used to speed up the simulation of the photon propagation inside the counters. The simulation was tune…
Large-volume liquid scintillator detectors with ultra-low background levels have been widely used to study neutrino physics and search for dark matter. Event vertex and event time are not only useful for event selection but also essential for the reconstruction of event energy. In this study, four event vertex and event time reconstruction algorithms using charge and time information collected by photomultiplier tubes were analyzed comprehensively. The effects of photomultiplier tube properties were also investigated. The results indicate that the transit time spread is the main effect degradi…
We compared the performance of a SiPM array and a PMT in a laboratory setting using a single 5.08x5.08-cm cylindrical sodium iodide scintillating crystal. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are the most commonly used device to monitor scintillating materials for radiation detection purposes. The systems are sometimes limited by disadvantages in the PMTs that may degrade their performance, including temperature dependence and variation with magnetic field. Instrumentation engineering must also contend with a potentially large volume relative to the active scintillator volume, fragility, and high volt…
The NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) plastic-scintillator-based time-of-flight detector for 0.1-1.6 GeV neutrons is currently under construction at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Darmstadt, Germany. In its final configuration, NeuLAND will consist of 3000 2.7 m $\times$ 5 cm $\times$ 5 cm big plastic scintillator bars that are read out on each end by fast timing photomultipliers. Here, data from a comprehensive study of an alternative light readout scheme using silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are reported. For this purpose, a NeuLAND bar was instrumented on each …
An ASIC named CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) has been developed for the next-generation neutrino experiments using a large number of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Each CATIROC provides the time and the charge measurements for 16 configurable input channels operating in trigger-less mode. Originally designed for the light emission in water Cherenkov detectors, we show in this paper that its use can be extended to liquid-scintillator based experiments. The $\sim$26000 3-inch PMTs of the JUNO experiment, under construction in China, is a case in point. This paper describes the…
The event plane detector (EPD), installed in the Solenoid Tracker at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider located at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is a plastic scintillator-based device that measures the reaction centrality and event plane in the forward region of the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We used silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays to detect the photons produced in the scintillator via the fiber connection. Signals from the SiPM arrays were amplified by the front-end electronic (FEE) board, and sent to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) boards for further processing via …
The construction of large-scale liquid scintillator detectors is complicated by the need to separate the scintillation region from photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) due to their intrinsic radioactivity. This is generally done using acrylic or nylon barriers, whose own activity can also lead to substantial reduction of the fiducial detection volume for a number of low energy (MeV) studies, and whose construction becomes increasingly difficult and expensive for larger detector volumes. Here we present an initial simulation study of an alternative geometric construction known as SLIPS (Stratified LIqu…
Xenon-doped liquid argon has been proposed as a good alternative to pure liquid argon in scintillation detectors. In this study, we report on the measurement of the time profile of scintillation light emitted from xenon-doped liquid argon with molar concentrations up to 1600 ppm. A compact setup has been developed for this study, with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the photosensor and $^{210}\mathrm{Po}$ and $^{90}\mathrm{Sr}$ as scintillation sources. An effective model based on the de-excitation processes has been developed to describe the data. The results show that xenon-doped liquid ar…
It is critical to construct an accurate optical model of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in many applications to describe the angular and spectral responses of the photon detection efficiency (PDE) of the PMTs in their working media. In this study, we propose a new PMT optical model to describe both light interactions with the PMT window and optical processes inside PMTs with reasonable accuracy based on the optics theory and a GEANT4-based simulation toolkit. The proposed model builds a relationship between the PDE and the underlying processes that the PDE relies on. This model also provides a t…
This study investigates the deployment of a medium-scale neutrino detector near Turkey's first nuclear power plant, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. The aim of this detector is to become a modular testbed for new technologies in the fields of new detection media and innovative photosensors. The detector could be used for instantaneous monitoring of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant via its antineutrino flux. In add…
This manuscript describes measurements of water-based liquid scintillators (WbLS), demonstrating separation of the Cherenkov and scintillation components using the fast timing response of a Large Area Picosecond Photodector (LAPPD). Additionally, the time profiles of three WbLS mixtures, defined by the relative fractions of scintillating compound, are characterized, with improved sensitivity to the scintillator rise-time. The measurements were made using both an LAPPD and a conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT). All samples were measured with an effective resolution O(100 ps), which allows f…
The time resolution (TR) is one of the most important characteristic of a detector. For the case of a scintillator, the collection of light also is important, it depends of the effective area of the photo-sensor (\textit{Scorer}). The Photomultipliers Tubes (PMTs), normally, have an effective area greater than the Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), however, due to its voltage of operation, their size or cost, in some cases it can be difficult to work with them. In which case, it is preferable to use SiPMs. The value of TR also depends of the size and geometry of the scintillator, number of phot…
