We present light yield and uniformity measurements of square and hexagonal tiles read out with silicon photomultipliers via a Y11 wavelength-shifting fiber or directly from the side or from the center at the top face. All tiles are 3~mm thick and have an area of $\rm 9~cm^2$. The sides are wrapped with two layers of Teflon tape while top and bottom faces are covered with two layers of Tyvec paper. We further show the first light yield and uniformity measurements of ATLAS Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) tiles with MPPC readout. This study has been motivated by looking into a possible phase 3 upgrade for the ATLAS hadron calorimeter and for hadron calorimeters at future hadron colliders.
The performance of several trigger counters based on plastic scintillators with silicon photomultiplier readout is investigated with cosmic rays. Efficiency and time resolution are measured using digital waveform analysis. The obtained results are relevant for trigger subsystems of Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) and Baryonic Matter at the Nuclotron (BM@N) at the NICA heavy-ion collider. The results show very high efficiency and good timing performance of the counters.
We present preliminary results on efficiency and light collection uniformity read out performances of different assemblies of scintillator tiles, coupled with solid state photon detectors of different make. Our test beam data suggest that the use of 2 mm scintillator tiles without wavelength shifting fibers may be possible in an ILC hadron calorimeter.
Hadron calorimeter (HCAL) is an essential sub-detector of the baseline detector system for Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). We plan to build an Analog Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) prototype based on the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA). The AHCAL of CEPC uses steel as absorber and scintillator tiles read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as sensitive medium. The energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter depends on the light yield uniformity of sensitive medium. It is essential to qualify the entire detector production in order to select scintillator tiles with light yield…
The performance of the $200\times2.5\times1$ cm$^3$ plastic scintillator strip with wavelength shifting fiber read-out by two novel photodetectors called Silicon PhotoMultipliers (SiPMs) is discussed. The advantages of SiPM relative to the traditional multichannel photomultiplier are shown. Light yield and light attenuation measurements are presented. This technique can be used in muon or calorimeter systems.
The performance of scintillator counters with embedded wavelength-shifting fibers has been measured in the Fermilab Meson Test Beam Facility using 120 GeV protons. The counters were extruded with a titanium dioxide surface coating and two channels for fibers at the Fermilab NICADD facility. Each fiber end is read out by a 2*2 mm^2 silicon photomultiplier. The signals were amplified and digitized by a custom-made front-end electronics board. Combinations of 5*2 cm^2 and 6*2 cm^2 extrusion profiles with 1.4 and 1.8 mm diameter fibers were tested. The design is intended for the cosmic-ray veto de…
The application of reach-through avalanche photodiodes (R'APD) as a photodetector for scintillator tiles has been investigated. The light collected by WLS fibers (0.84mm and 1mm diameter) embedded in the scintillator has been transmited to the 0.5mm2 active surface of APD by clear optical fibers and optical connectors. A low noise charge sensitive preamplifier (approximately 400 electrons equivalent noise charge) has been used to gain the photodiode signal. Various configurations of tile-fibre systems, suitable for CMS and LHCb experiments at LHC have been studied using cosmic muons and muon b…
Measurements are presented of the reduction of signal output due to radiation damage for plastic scintillator tiles used in the hadron endcap (HE) calorimeter of the CMS detector. The tiles were exposed to particles produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to a delivered luminosity of 50 fb$^{-1}$. The measurements are based on readout channels of the HE that were instrumented with silicon photomultipliers, and are derived using data from several sources: a laser calibration system, a movable radioactive source, as well as …
Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.
$Cs_2LiYCl_6:Ce^{3+}$ (CLYC) is an inorganic scintillator that has recently garnered attention for its ability to detect and discriminate between gammas and thermal neutrons. We investigate several important performance parameters of three different solid state photomultipliers (SSPMs) when reading out CLYC crystals: linearity, energy resolution, and pulse shape and discrimination ability. These performance parameters are assessed at a variety of temperatures between -20$^{\circ}$C and +50$^{\circ}$C.
Imaging hadronic calorimeters with scintillator readout use small scintillator tiles individually read out by silicon photomultipliers to achieve the necessary granularity needed for sophisticated reconstruction algorithms at future collider detectors. For a second generation prototype of the CALICE analog HCAL new, 3 mm thick scintillator tiles with an embedded wavelength shifting fiber and new photon sensor from CPTA are being fabricated. The availability of blue-sensitive SiPMs also allows fiberless coupling of the photon sensor to the tile, a technique requiring modified geometries to achi…
We report the first clear observation of neutron/gamma-ray pulse-shape sensitivity of a fully-instrumented 8 $\times$ 8 array of plastic scintillator segments coupled to two 5 cm $\times$ 5 cm 64-channel SiPM arrays as part of a study of the key metrics of a prototype antineutrino detector module designed for directional sensitivity. SANDD (a Segmented AntiNeutrino Directional Detector) will eventually comprise a central module of 64 elongated segments of $^{6}$Li-doped pulse-shape-sensitive scintillator rods, each with a square cross section of 5.4 mm $\times$ 5.4 mm, surrounded by larger cro…
We study the light output, light collection efficiency and signal timing of a variety of organic scintillators that are being considered for the upgrade of the hadronic calorimeter of the CMS detector. The experimental data are collected at the H2 test-beam area at CERN, using a 150 GeV muon beam. In particular, we investigate the usage of over-doped and green-emitting plastic scintillator, two solutions that have not been extensively considered. We present a study of the energy distribution in plastic-scintillator tiles, the hit efficiency as a function of the hit position, and a study of the…
The recent availability of blue sensitive silicon photomultipliers allows the direct readout of blue emitting plastic scintillator tiles without the use of a wavelength shifting fiber. Such directly read out tiles, without light guides, are attractive for the use in highly granular calorimeters that use large numbers of individual cells and in other applications where very compact designs are needed. However, the total signal amplitude and the uniformity of the response can be problematic in such cases. We have developed a scanning setup to investigate the response of scintillator tiles with S…
Photon readout of plastic scintillators is investigated with the aim of improving the precision of neutron \b{eta} decay experiments. Neutron decay is nowadays studied with high statistics, based on up to 109 registered decay events, and leads to strongly improved limits on new physics beyond the standard model, with \b{eta}s often registered in plastic scintillators. The main systematic errors in these experiments are due to imperfect characterization of the scintillators with respect to linearity, energy resolution, and electron backscattering. We study whether these errors can be diminished…
The front face of the CDF central calorimeter is being equipped with a new Preshower detector, based on scintillator tiles read out by WLS fibers, in order to cope with the luminosity increase provided by the Main Injector during the Tevatron's Run II data taking. A light yield of about 40 pe/MIP at the tile exit was obtained, exceeding the design requirements.
The CALICE Analogue Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) at the International Linear Collider (ILC) is a high-granularity hadron calorimeter based on scintillator tiles readout by MPPCs. Toward the construction of ILC, the optimization of the AHCAL granularity is revisited, and we are studying mixed granularity with larger scintillator tile. We first measured the performance of $60\times60~\mathrm{mm^2}$ tile, which is larger than the standard $30\times30~\mathrm{mm^2}$ tile. The light yield of $60\times60~\mathrm{mm^2}$ tile was measured to be about a half of that of $30\times30~\mathrm{mm^2}$ tile, wh…
Scintillators capable of detecting both neutrons and gamma-rays have generated considerable interest. In particular, the use of such scintillators with silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) enables low-power and compact-geometry applications. Three types of Li-loaded scintillators, CLYC, CLLB, and NaIL, have been tested with a custom-designed SiPM array for temperatures between --20 and 50$^{\circ}$C. The array consists of four 6x6~mm$^2$ SiPMs arranged in a 2x2 configuration. Pulse shape discrimination is used for neutron and gamma identification. Because the pulse shape changes with temperature, …
We present a novel geometry of scintillator tiles developed for fiberless coupling to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for applications in highly granular calorimeters. A high degree of uniformity of the tile response over the full active area was achieved by a drilled slit at the coupling position of the photon sensor with 2 mm, 4 mm and 5.5 mm in height, width and depth. Detailed measurements of the response to penetrating electrons were performed for tiles with a lateral size of 3 x 3 cm^2 and thicknesses of 5 mm and 3 mm.
The advent of silicon photomultipliers has enabled big advances in high energy physics instrumentation, for example by allowing the construction of extremely granular hadronic calorimeters with photon sensors integrated into small scintillator tiles. Direct coupling of the SiPM to the plastic scintillator, without use of wavelength shifting fibers, provides a fast detector response, making such devices well suited for precise timing measurements. We have constructed a setup consisting of 15 such scintillator tiles read out with fast digitizers with deep buffers to measure the time structure of…
We studied the temperature dependence of the light yield of the linear alkyl benzene (LAB)-based and mesitylene-based liquid scintillators. The light yield increases by 23% for both liquid scintillators when the temperature is lowered from $26\;^{\circ}$C to $-40\;^{\circ }$C, correcting for the temperature response of the photomultiplier tube. The measurements help to understand the energy response of the liquid scintillator detectors. Especially, the next generation reactor neutrino experiments for neutrino mass hierarchy, such as the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), require…
The Atomic Spectroscopy and Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons (ASACUSA) experiment at the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility of CERN constructed segmented scintillators to detect and track the charged pions which emerge from antiproton annihilations in a future superconducting radiofrequency Paul trap for antiprotons. A system of 541 cast and extruded scintillator bars were arranged in 11 detector modules which provided a spatial resolution of 17 mm. Green wavelength-shifting fibers were embedded in the scintillators, and read out by silicon photomultipliers which had a sensitive area of 1 x…
A prototype module for an International Linear Collider (ILC) detector was built, installed, and tested between 2006 and 2009 at CERN and Fermilab as part of the CALICE test beam program, in order to study the possibilities of extending energy sampling behind a hadronic calorimeter and to study the possibilities of providing muon tracking. The "tail catcher/muon tracker" (TCMT) is composed of 320 extruded scintillator strips (dimensions 1000 mm x 50 mm x 5 mm) packaged in 16 one-meter square planes interleaved between steel plates. The scintillator strips were read out with wavelength shifting…

The results obtained with different configurations are presented. A time resolution of the order of 300 ps, a light yield of more than 230 photo-electrons, and an efficiency better than 99.8 $\%$ are obtained with $\sim 225$ cm$^2$ large area tiles. This technology is suitable for a wide range …
The Analogue Hadron Calorimeter (AHCAL) developed by the CALICE collaboration is a scalable engineering prototype for a Linear Collider detector. It is a sampling calorimeter of steel absorber plates and plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) as active material (SiPM-on-tile). The front-end chips are integrated into the active layers of the calorimeter and are designed for minimizing power consumption by rapidly cycling the power according to the beam structure of a linear accelerator. 38 layers of the sampling structure are equipped with cassettes containing 5…
We describe a complete end-to-end simulation of the response of scintillator counters to charged particles. The counters were extruded with a titanium dioxide surface coating and two channels for the embedded wavelength-shifting fibers which are read out by silicon photomultipliers. The simulation includes the production and propagation of scintillation and Cerenkov photons, the response of the silicon photomultipliers, and the generation of the signal waveforms. Probability lookup tables are used to speed up the simulation of the photon propagation inside the counters. The simulation was tune…
Precision calorimetry using highly granular sampling calorimeters is being developed based on the particle flow concept within the CALICE collaboration. One design option of a hadron calorimeter is based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to detect photons generated in plastic scintillator tiles. Driven by the need of automated mass assembly of around ten million channels stringently required by the high granularity, we developed a design of scintillator tiles directly coupled with surface-mounted SiPMs. A cavity is created in the center of the bottom surface of each tile to provide enough ro…
The CALICE collaboration is presently constructing a test hadron calorimeter (HCAL) with 7620 scintillator tiles read out by novel photo-detectors - Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). This prototype is the first device which uses SiPMs on a large scale. We present the design of the HCAL and report on measured properties of more than 10 thousand SiPMs. We discuss the SiPM efficiency, gain, cross-talk, and noise rate dependence on bias voltage and temperature, including the spread in these parameters. We analyze the reasons for SiPM rejection and present the results of the long term stability stu…
The Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) is the hadronic calorimeter covering the central region of the ATLAS detector at the LHC. It is a sampling calorimeter consisting of alternating thin steel plates and scintillating tiles. Wavelength shifting fibers coupled to the tiles collect the produced light and are read out by photomultiplier tubes. Currently, an analog sum of the processed signal of several photomultipliers serves as input to the first level of trigger. Photomultiplier signals are then digitized and stored on detector and are only transferred off detector once the first trigger acceptance h…
Among the top priorities for high-energy astronomy in the coming decade are sensitive surveys in the hard X-ray/soft γ-ray (10-600 keV) and medium-energy γ-ray (0.2-80 MeV) bands. Historically, observations in the soft and medium energy γ-ray bands have been conducted using detectors based on inorganic scintillators read out by photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs). These observations were limited by the modest energy and time resolution of traditional scintillator materials (e.g. NaI and CsI), and by the demands on mission resources imposed by the bulky, fragile, high-voltage PMTs. Recent technologic…
Light yield and spatial uniformity for a large variety of configurations of scintillator tiles was studied. The light from each scintillator was collected by a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) directly viewing the produced scintillation light (SiPM-on-tile technique). The varied parameters included tile transverse size, tile thickness, tile wrapping material, scintillator composition, and SiPM model. These studies were performed using 120 GeV protons at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. External tracking allowed the position of each proton penetrating a tile to be measured. The results were compa…
The results obtained in laboratory tests, using scintillator bars read by silicon photomultipliers are reported. The present approach is the first step for designing a precision tracking system to be placed inside a free magnetized volume for the charge identification of low energy crossing particles. The devised system is demonstrated able to provide a spatial resolution better than 2 mm.
The detection of 200-1000 MeV neutrons requires large amounts, $\sim$100 cm, of detector material because of the long nuclear interaction length of these particles. In the example of the NeuLAND neutron time-of-flight detector at FAIR, this is accomplished by using 3000 monolithic scintillator bars of 270$\times$5$\times$5 cm$^3$ size made of a fast plastic. Each bar is read out on the two long ends, and the needed time resolution of $σ_t$ $<$ 150 ps is reached with fast timing photomultipliers. In the present work, it is investigated whether silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) photosensors can be …
Within the CALICE collaboration, several concepts for the hadronic calorimeter of a future lepton collider detector are studied. After having demonstrated the capabilities of the measurement methods in "physics prototypes", the focus now lies on improving their implementation in "technological prototypes", that are scalable to the full linear collider detector. The Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL) concept is a sampling calorimeter of tungsten or steel absorber plates and plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) as active components. The front-end electronics…
The SiPM-on-tile technology, consisting of plastic scintillator tiles with typical sizes of a few cm$^2$ mounted on top of SiPMs, has been developed within the CALICE collaboration to enable automatized mass production of active elements for scintillator-based highly granular calorimeters. We present a study of the impact of misalignment of the scintillator tile with respect to the photon sensor on the response uniformity and on the absolute light yield for square, hexagonal and rhomboidal scintillator tiles of different sizes. A misalignment results in the formation of a dipole asymmetry of t…
A detector designed to measure early particle showers has been installed in front of the central CDF calorimeter at the Tevatron. This new preshower detector is based on scintillator tiles coupled to wavelength-shifting fibers read out by multi-anode photomultipliers and has a total of 3,072 readout channels. The replacement of the old gas detector was required due to an expected increase in instantaneous luminosity of the Tevatron collider in the next few years. Calorimeter coverage, jet energy resolution, and electron and photon identification are among the expected improvements. The final d…
An ASIC named CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) has been developed for the next-generation neutrino experiments using a large number of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Each CATIROC provides the time and the charge measurements for 16 configurable input channels operating in trigger-less mode. Originally designed for the light emission in water Cherenkov detectors, we show in this paper that its use can be extended to liquid-scintillator based experiments. The $\sim$26000 3-inch PMTs of the JUNO experiment, under construction in China, is a case in point. This paper describes the…
The CALICE analog HCAL is a highly granular calorimeter, proposed for the International Linear Collider. It is based on scintillator tiles, read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The effects of gaps between the calorimeter tiles, as well as the non-uniform response of the tiles, in view of the impact on the energy resolution, are studied in Monte Carlo events. It is shown that these type of effects do not have a significant influence on the measurement of hadron showers.
We report on the possibility of using Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) to detect the scintillation light from neutron conversion in ZnS:6LiF scintillators. The light is collected by wavelength-shifting fibers embedded into the scintillator. The difficulty of extracting neutron signals in the presence of high dark count rates of the SiPMs is addressed by applying a dedicated processing algorithm to analyze the temporal distribution of the SiPM pulses. With a single-channel prototype detection unit we demonstrate a very good neutron signal extraction at SiPM dark count rates of about 1 MHz.
We compared the performance of a SiPM array and a PMT in a laboratory setting using a single 5.08x5.08-cm cylindrical sodium iodide scintillating crystal. Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are the most commonly used device to monitor scintillating materials for radiation detection purposes. The systems are sometimes limited by disadvantages in the PMTs that may degrade their performance, including temperature dependence and variation with magnetic field. Instrumentation engineering must also contend with a potentially large volume relative to the active scintillator volume, fragility, and high volt…
In the evaluation of novel scintillators, it is important to ensure that the spectrum of the light emitted by the scintillator is well matched to the response of the photomultiplier. In attempting to measure this spectrum using radioactive sources, it is found that so few photons are emitted per scintillation event that conventional spectroscopic techniques cannot easily be used. A simple photon counting technique is presented, using two photomultipliers operated in coincidence, the one viewing the scintillator directly, while the other views it through a monochromator. This system allows the …
The event plane detector (EPD), installed in the Solenoid Tracker at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider located at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is a plastic scintillator-based device that measures the reaction centrality and event plane in the forward region of the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We used silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays to detect the photons produced in the scintillator via the fiber connection. Signals from the SiPM arrays were amplified by the front-end electronic (FEE) board, and sent to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) boards for further processing via …
We present the results of the first high-altitude balloon flight test of a concept for an advanced Compton telescope making use of modern scintillator materials with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readouts. There is a need in the fields of high-energy astronomy and solar physics for new medium-energy gamma-ray (~0.4 - 10 MeV) detectors capable of making sensitive observations. A fast scintillator- based Compton telescope with SiPM readouts is a promising solution to this instrumentation challenge, since the fast response of the scintillators permits the rejection of background via time-of-flig…
The CALICE collaboration is developing highly granular electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for detectors at future energy frontier electron-positron colliders. After successful tests of a physics prototype, a technological prototype of the Analog Hadron Calorimeter has been built, based on a design and construction techniques scalable to a collider detector. The prototype consists of a steel absorber structure and active layers of small scintillator tiles that are individually read out by directly coupled SiPMs. Each layer has an active area of $72 \times 72\,{\rm cm}^{2}$ and a tile siz…

In its final configuration, NeuLAND will consist of 3000 2.7 m $\times$ 5 cm $\times$ 5 cm big plastic scintillator bars that are read out on each end by fast timing photomultipliers. Here, data from a comprehensive study of an alternative light readout scheme using silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are reported. For this purpose, a NeuLAND bar was instrumented on each …
The Muon Telescope is a muography experiment for imaging volcanoes in Colombia. It consists of a scintillator tracking system and a water Cherenkov detector used for particle deposited energy measurement. The MuTe operates autonomously in high altitude environments where the temperature gradient reaches up to $10$$^{\circ}$C. In this work, we characterize the breakdown voltage, gain, and noise of the telescope silicon photomultipliers for temperature variations spanning $0$ to $40$$^{\circ}$C. We demonstrated that the discrimination threshold for the MuTe hodoscope must be above 5 pe to avoid …
Radiation damage in the plastic scintillator and/or readout WLS fibers in the HE endcap calorimeter 1.4<y<4 in the CMS experiment at LHC and SLHC will require remediation after 2018. We describe one alternative using the existing brass absorber in the Endcap calorimeter, to replace the plastic scintillator tiles with BaF2 tiles, or quartz tiles coated with thin(1-5 micron) films of radiation-hard pTerphenyl(pTP) or the fast phosphor ZnO:Ga. These tiles would be read-out by easily replaceable arrays of straight, parallel WLS fibers coupled to clear plastic-cladded quartz fibers of proven radiat…
Recent tests of a single module of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomography system (J-PET) consisting of 30 cm long plastic scintillator strips have proven its applicability for the detection of annihilation quanta (0.511 MeV) with a coincidence resolving time (CRT) of 0.266 ns. The achieved resolution is almost by a factor of two better with respect to the current TOF-PET detectors and it can still be improved since, as it is shown in this article, the intrinsic limit of time resolution for the determination of time of the interaction of 0.511 MeV gamma quanta in plastic scintillators is…
