Let $λ$ denote the Liouville function for function fields. We prove that for a fixed $q$, given $h \ll \sqrt{N}$ and $h(N) \to \infty$ arbitrarily slowly as $N \to \infty$, then \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{q^N}\sum_{G_0 \in \mathcal{M}_N}|\sum_{G \in \mathcal{I}_{h}(G_0)}λ(G)|^2 \ll_q \frac{N^5}{h^2}q^{h}. \end{equation*} The proof follows a similar method of an analogous case in the integer setting developed by Chinis, adapting methods originally developed by Matomäki and Radziwiłł.
Landau examined the partial sums of the Möbius function and the Liouville function for a number field $K$. First we shall try again the same problem by using a new Perron's formula due to Liu and Ye. Next we consider the equivalent theorem of the grand Riemann hypothesis for the Dedekind zeta-function of $K$ and that of the prime ideal theorem.
The Mertens function, $M(x) := \sum_{n \leq x} μ(n)$, is defined as the summatory function of the classical Möbius function. The Dirichlet inverse function $g(n) := (ω+1)^{-1}(n)$ is defined in terms of the shifted strongly additive function $ω(n)$ that counts the number of distinct prime factors of $n$ without multiplicity. The Dirichlet generating function (DGF) of $g(n)$ is $ζ(s)^{-1} (1+P(s))^{-1}$ for $\Re(s) > 1$ where $P(s) = \sum_p p^{-s}$ is the prime zeta function. We study the distribution of the unsigned functions $|g(n)|$ with DGF $ζ(2s)^{-1}(1-P(s))^{-1}$ and $C_Ω(n)$ with DGF $(…
Under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis, the Linear Independence Hypothesis, and a bound on negative discrete moments of the Riemann zeta function, we prove the existence of a limiting logarithmic distribution of the normalisation of the weighted sum of the Liouville function, $L_α(x) = \sum_{n \leq x}{λ(n) / n^α}$, for $0 \leq α< 1/2$. Using this, we conditionally show that these weighted sums have a negative bias, but that for each $0 \leq α< 1/2$, the set of all $x \geq 1$ for which $L_α(x)$ is positive has positive logarithmic density. For $α= 0$, this gives a conditional proof that…
Let $F$ be a number field, $k$ a positive integer. In this paper, we define the Mobius and Liouville functions of order $k$ in $F$. We give a formula about the partial sums of them by using elementary number theory and complex analysis. Moreover, we also consider the number of $k$-free ideals of the integer ring of $F$.
This is a copy of my Bourbaki Seminar on the work of Matomaki and Radziwill showing that the Liouville function exhibits cancelation in almost all short intervals as soon as the length of the interval tends to infinity.
Let $λ$ denote the Liouville function. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis, we prove that $$\int_X^{2X}\Big|\sum_{x\leq n \leq x+h}λ(n) \Big|^2 dx \ll Xh(\log X)^6,$$ as $X\rightarrow \infty$, provided $h=h(X)\leq \exp\left(\sqrt{\left(\frac{1}{2}-o(1)\right)\log X \log\log X}\right).$ The proof uses a simple variation of the methods developed by Matom{ä}ki and Radziwiłł in their work on multiplicative functions in short intervals, as well as some standard results concerning smooth numbers.
In this note we give a short and self-contained proof that, for any $δ> 0$, $\sum_{x \leq n \leq x+x^δ} λ(n) = o(x^δ)$ for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$. We also sketch a proof of a generalization of such a result to general real-valued multiplicative functions. Both results are special cases of results in our more involved and lengthy recent pre-print.
We prove a kind of "almost all symmetry" result for the Liouville function $λ(n):=(-1)^{Ω(n)}$, giving non-trivial bounds for its "symmetry integral", say $I_λ(N,h)$ : we get $I_λ(N,h)\ll NhL^3+Nh^{21/20}$, with $L:=\log N$. We also give similar results for other related arithmetic functions, like the Möbius function $μ(n)$ ($=λ(n)$ on square-free $n$).
We use Bourgain's recent bound for short exponential sums to prove certain independence results related to the distribution of squarefree numbers in arithmetic progressions.
This paper proves nontrivial bounds for short mixed character sums by introducing estimates for Vinogradov's mean value theorem into a version of the Burgess method.
We obtain upper bounds for the fourth and higher moments of short exponential sums involving Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms twisted by rational additive twists with small denominators.
We investigate the solubility of the congruence xy=1 (mod p), where p is a prime and x,y are restricted to lie in suitable short intervals. Our work relies on a mean value theorem for incomplete Kloosterman sums.
In this paper, we prove that for any $A>0$ there exist infinitely many primes $p$ for which sums of the Legendre symbol modulo $p$ over an interval of length $(\ln p)^A$ can take large values.
Corentin Perret-Gentil proved, under some very general conditions, that short sums of $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields of varying center converges in law to a Gaussian random variable or vector. The main inputs are P.~Deligne's equidistribution theorem, N.~Katz' works and the results surveyed in \cite{MR3338119}. In particular, this applies to $2$-dimensional Kloosterman sums $\mathsf{Kl}_{2,\mathbb{F}_q}$ studied by N.~Katz in \cite{MR955052} and in \cite{MR1081536} when the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ gets large. \par This article considers the case of short sums of normalized classic…
We show that there are short intervals $[x,x+y]$ containing $\gg y^{1/10}$ numbers expressible as the sum of two squares, which is many more than the average when $y=o( (\log{x})^{5/9})$. We obtain similar results for sums of two squares in short arithmetic progressions.
In the present paper we investigate the limiting behaviour of short incomplete Gauss sums at random argument as the number of terms goes to infinity. We prove that the limit distribution is given by the distribution of theta sums and differs from the limit law for long Gauss sums studied by the author and Marklof. The key ingredient in the proof is an equidistribution theorem for rational points on horocycles in the metaplectic cover of SL(2,R).
Given a positive integer $n$ the $k$-fold divisor function $d_k(n)$ equals the number of ordered $k$-tuples of positive integers whose product equals $n$. In this article we study the variance of sums of $d_k(n)$ in short intervals and establish asymptotic formulas for the variance of sums of $d_k(n)$ in short intervals of certain lengths for $k=3$ and for $k \ge 4$ under the assumption of the Lindelöf hypothesis.
We study sums of Hecke eigenvalues of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb Z)$, with general $n\geq 3$, over certain short intervals under the assumption of the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis and a slightly stronger upper bound concerning the exponent towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture that is currently known. In particular, in this case we evaluate the second moment of the sums in question asymptotically.
We show that under certain general conditions, short sums of $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields follow a normal distribution asymptotically when the origin varies, generalizing results of Erdős-Davenport, Mak-Zaharescu and Lamzouri. In particular, this applies to exponential sums arising from Fourier transforms such as Kloosterman sums or Birch sums, as we can deduce from the works of Katz. By approximating the moments of traces of random matrices in monodromy groups, a quantitative version can be given as in Lamzouri's article, exhibiting a different phenomenon than the averaging …
Sums of squares of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ over short intervals are investigated. Known upper bounds for the fourth and twelfth moment of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ are derived. A discussion concerning other possibilities for the estimation of higher power moments of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ is given.
We generalize results of Duke, Garcia, Hyde, Lutz and others on the distribution of sums of roots of unity related to Gaussian periods to obtain equidistribution of similar sums over zeros of arbitrary integral polynomials. We also interpret these results in terms of trace functions, and generalize them to higher rank trace functions.
We estimate the mean square of a short exponential sum involving Fourier coefficients of a cusp form with a linear twist, a smooth weight function, and a relatively short averaging interval.
We obtain the estimate of incomplete Kloosterman sum to powerful modulus $q$. The length $N$ of the sum lies in the interval $e^{c(\log{q})^{2/3}}\le N\le \sqrt{q}$.
In this work we establish a Burgess bound for short multiplicative character sums in arbitrary dimensions, in which the character is evaluated at a homogeneous form that belongs to a very general class of "admissible" forms. This $n$-dimensional Burgess bound is nontrivial for sums over boxes of sidelength at least $q^β$, with $β> 1/2 - 1/(2(n+1))$. This is the first Burgess bound that applies in all dimensions to generic forms of arbitrary degree. Our approach capitalizes on a recent stratification result for complete multiplicative character sums evaluated at rational functions, due to the s…
We establish new estimates on short character sums for arbitrary composite moduli with small prime factors. Our main result improves on the Graham-Ringrose bound for square free moduli and also on the result due to Gallagher and Iwaniec when the core $q'=\prod_{p|q}p$ of the modulus $q$ satisfies $\log q'\sim \log q$. Some applications to zero free regions of Dirichlet L-functions and the $\rm{P\acute{o}lya}$ and Vinogradov inequalities are indicated.
We combine a classical idea of Postnikov (1956) with the method of Korobov (1974) for estimating double Weyl sums, deriving new bounds on short character sums when the modulus $q$ has a small core $\prod_{p\mid q}p$. Using this estimate, we improve certain bounds of Gallagher (1972) and Iwaniec (1974) for the corresponding $L$-functions. In turn, this allows us to improve the error term in the asymptotic formula for primes in short arithmetic progressions modulo a power of a fixed prime. As yet another application of our bounds, we substantially extend the region free of Siegel zeros.
Under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis (RH), we prove explicit quantitative relations between hypothetical error terms in the asymptotic formulae for truncated mean-square average of exponential sums over primes and in the mean-square of primes in short intervals. We also remark that such relations are connected with a more precise form of Montgomery's pair-correlation conjecture.
If $k$ is a sufficiently large positive integer, we show that the Diophantine equation $$n (n+d) \cdots (n+ (k-1)d) = y^{\ell}$$ has at most finitely many solutions in positive integers $n, d, y$ and $\ell$, with $\operatorname{gcd}(n,d)=1$ and $\ell \geq 2$. Our proof relies upon Frey-Hellegouarch curves and results on supersingular primes for elliptic curves without complex multiplication, derived from upper bounds for short character sums and sieves, analytic and combinatorial.
Following the work of Hildebrand we improve the Po'lya- Vinogradov inequality in a specific range, we also give a general result that shows its dependency on Burgess bound and at last we improve the range of validity for a special case of Burgess' character sum estimate.
Let $k\ge 1$ be an integer. We prove that a suitable asymptotic formula for the average number of representations of integers $n=p_{1}^{k}+p_{2}^{2}+p_{3}^{2}$, where $p_1,p_2,p_3$ are prime numbers, holds in intervals shorter than the ones previously known.
Let $\mathbf H_2$ denote the set of even integers $n \not\equiv 1 \pmod 3$. We prove that when $H \ge X^{0.33}$, almost all integers $n \in \mathbf H_2$, $X < n \le X + H$ can be represented as the sum of a prime and the square of a prime. We also prove a similar result for sums of three squares of primes.
We estimate short exponential sums weighted by the Fourier coefficients of a Maass form. This requires working out a certain transformation formula for non-linear exponential sums, which is of independent interest. We also discuss how the results depend on the growth of the Fourier coefficients in question. As a byproduct of these considerations, we can slightly extend the range of validity of a short exponential sum estimate for holomorphic cusp forms. The short estimates allow us to reduce smoothing errors. In particular, we prove an analogue of an approximate functional equation previously …
In this paper we establish the function field analogue of Bateman-Horn conjecture in short interval in the limit of a large finite field. Hence we start with counting prime polynomials generated by primitive quadratic functions in short intervals. To this end we further work out on function field analogs of cancellation of Mobius sums and its correlations(Chowla type sums) and confirm that square root cancellation in Mobius sums is equivalent to square root cancellation in Chowla type sums.
This work proves a Burgess bound for short mixed character sums in $n$ dimensions. The non-principal multiplicative character of prime conductor $q$ may be evaluated at any "admissible" form, and the additive character may be evaluated at any real-valued polynomial. The resulting upper bound for the mixed character sum is nontrivial when the length of the sum is at least $q^β$ with $β> 1/2 - 1/(2(n+1))$ in each coordinate. This work capitalizes on the recent stratification of multiplicative character sums due to Xu, and the resolution of the Vinogradov Mean Value Theorem in arbitrary dimension…
In the present note, we prove new lower bounds on large values of character sums $Δ(x,q):=\max_{χ\neq χ_0} \vert \sum_{n\leq x} χ(n)\vert$ in certain ranges of $x$. Employing an implementation of the resonance method developed in a work involving the author in order to exhibit large values of $L$- functions, we improve some results of Hough in the range $\log x = o(\sqrt{\log q})$. Our results are expressed using the counting function of $y$- friable integers less than $x$ where we improve the level of smoothness $y$ for short intervals.
Gross and Smith have put forward generalizations of Hardy - Littlewood twin prime conjectures for algebraic number fields. We estimate the behavior of sums of a singular series that arises in these conjectures, up to lower order terms. More exactly, we find asymptotic formulas for smoothed sums of the singular series minus one. Based upon Gross and Smith's conjectures, we use our result to suggest that for large enough 'short intervals' in an algebraic number field K, the variance of counts of prime elements in a random short interval deviates from a Cramer model prediction by a universal fact…
We introduce a method to estimate sums of oscillating functions on finite abelian groups over intervals or (generalized) arithmetic progressions, when the size of the interval is such that the completing techniques of Fourier analysis are barely insufficient to obtain non-trivial results. In particular, we prove various estimates for exponential sums over intervals in finite fields and related sums just below the Polya-Vinogradov range, and derive applications to equidistribution problems.
Let $p$ be a prime number, $X$ be an absolutely irreducible affine plane curve over $\mathbb{F}_p$, and $g,f\in\mathbb{F}_p(x,y)$. We study the distribution of the values of the hybrid exponential sums S_n on $n\in\mathcal{I}$ for some short interval $\mathcal{I}$. We show that under some natural conditions the limiting distribution of the projections of the sum $S_n$, $n\in\mathcal{I}$ on any straight line through the origin is Gaussian as $p$ tends to infinity.
We prove that a suitable asymptotic formula for the average number of representations of integers $n=p_{1}^{3}+p_{2}^{3}+p_{3}^{3}+p_{4}^{3}$, where $p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4$ are prime numbers, holds in intervals shorter than the the ones previously known.
A discussion involving the evaluation of the sum $$\sum_{T<\g\le T+H}|ζ(1/2+iγ)|^2$$ and some related integrals is presented, where $γ\,(>0)$ denotes imaginary parts of complex zeros of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$. It is shown unconditionally that the above sum is $\,\ll H\log^2T\log\log T\,$ for $\,T^{2/3}\log^4T \ll H \le T$.
We present new estimates for sums of the divisor function, and other similar arithmetic functions, in short intervals over function fields. (When the intervals are long, one obtains a good estimate from the Riemann hypothesis.) We obtain an estimate that approaches square root cancellation as long as the characteristic of the finite field is relatively large. This is done by a geometric method, inspired by work of Hast and Matei, where we calculate the singular locus of a variety whose $\mathbb F_q$-points control this sum. This has applications to highly unbalanced moments of $L$-functions.
This paper proves Burgess bounds for short mixed character sums in multi-dimensional settings. The mixed character sums we consider involve both an exponential evaluated at a real-valued multivariate polynomial, and a product of multiplicative Dirichlet characters. We combine a multi-dimensional Burgess method with recent results on multi-dimensional Vinogradov Mean Value Theorems for translation-dilation invariant systems in order to prove character sum bounds in any dimension that recapture the Burgess bound in dimension 1. Moreover, we show that by embedding the given polynomial into an adv…
We obtain resonances for short exponential sums involving Fourier coefficients of Maass forms for $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb Z)$. This involves deriving asymptotics for the integrals appearing in the $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ Voronoi summation formula. As an application, we also prove an $Ω$-result for short sums of Fourier coefficients.
Keating and Rudnick studied the variance of the polynomial von Mangoldt function $Λ\colon \mathbb{F}_q[t] \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ in arithmetic progressions and short intervals using two equidistribution results by Katz. Hall, Keating and Roditty-Gershon then generalised the result for arithmetic progressions for a von Mangoldt function $Λ_ρ$ attached to a Galois representation $ρ\colon \mathrm{Gal} ( \overline{\mathbb{F}_q(t)}/\mathbb{F}_q(t) ) \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_m(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell)$. We employ a recent equidistribution result by Sawin in order to generalise the corresponding r…
We show in a quantitative way that any odd character $χ$ modulo $q$ of fixed order $g \geq 2$ satisfies the property that if the Pólya-Vinogradov inequality for $χ$ can be improved to $$\max_{1 \leq t \leq q} \left|\sum_{n \leq t} χ(n)\right| = o_{q \rightarrow \infty}(\sqrt{q}\log q)$$ then for any $ε> 0$ one may exhibit cancellation in partial sums of $χ$ on the interval $[1,t]$ whenever $t > q^ε$, i.e.,$$\sum_{n \leq t} χ(n) = o_{q \rightarrow \infty}(t) \text{ for all $t > q^ε$.}$$ This generalizes and extends a result of Fromm and Goldmakher. We also prove a converse implication, to the e…
In this paper we obtain a variation of the Pólya--Vinogradov inequality with the sum restricted to a certain height. Assume $χ$ to be a primitive character modulo $q$, $ε> 0$ and $N\le q^{1-γ}$, with $0\le γ\le 1/3$. We prove that \begin{equation*} \left|\sum_{n=1}^N χ(n) \right|\le c(\frac{1}{3}-γ+ε)\sqrt{q}\log q \end{equation*} with $c=2/π^2+o(1)$ if $χ$ is even and $c=1/π+o(1)$ if $χ$ is odd.
We prove a uniform estimate for sums of Hecke--Maass eigenvalues squared over primes in short intervals that can be regarded as an analogue of Hoheisel's classical prime number theorem for all real analytic cusp forms. Our argument is modelled after our treatment of Linnik's least prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions (Tata LN 72) and depends on recent works in the theory of automorphic representations. We stress that constants in the present work, including those implicit, are all universal and effectively computable, although we pay no particular attention to numerical precision. …
We consider sums of oscillating functions on intervals in cyclic groups of size close to the square root of the size of the group. We first prove non-trivial estimates for intervals of length slightly larger than this square root (bridging the "Polyá-Vinogradov gap" in some sense) for bounded functions with bounded Fourier transforms. We then prove that the existence of non-trivial estimates for ranges slightly below the square-root bound is stable under the discrete Fourier transform, and we give applications related to trace functions over finite fields.
