Motivation: Motivated by the growing interest in understanding the role of non-metricity in describing dense stellar systems, in this paper, we study compact stellar configurations within the framework of linear $f(Q)$ gravity.
Methodology: By adopting a linear modification of the form $f(Q) = αQ+β$, we analyze the internal structure and physical properties of an anisotropic relativistic star within the framework of $f(Q)$ gravity. We employ the Karmarkar's condition together with the Vaidya-Tikekar metric ansatz to obtain a closed-form interior solution of the star. The interior solution is then matched to the Schwarzschild exterior solution across the boundary of the star. By varying the model parameters, we analyze physical features of the resultant stellar configuration.
Results: We note distinctive features in the density, pressure, anisotropy and total mass of the star under a such modification. By enforcing the condition that the central pressure remains finite, we obtain the maximum compactness bound which is shown to depend solely on the Vaidya-Tikekar curvature parameter $K$. We recover the Buchdahl bound for the curvature parameter $K=0$, which corresponds to the solution for an isotropic and homogeneous fluid sphere. Utilizing the energy density and radial pressure profiles, we numerically integrate the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations and obtain the mass-radius ($M-R$) relationships for different values of the model parameter $α$. We note that for higher values of $α$, the maximum mass and radius decrease, shifting the stable branch towards ultra-compact configurations. An interesting observation in our analysis is that a linearly modified $f(Q)$ gravity model can support comparatively low mass stars. Utilizing the observed mass of some known pulsars, we demonstrate how our model can be used to fine-tune the radius of the star.
We systematically examine the compactness of neutron stars as Tolman VII solutions in scalar-tensor theory of gravity. As a result, when the coupling constant is confined to values provided by astronomical observations we show that the maximum compactness of neutron stars in general relativity is higher than that in scalar-tensor gravity. In addition, we show that although ultra-compact stars, with radius smaller than the Regge-Wheeler potential peak, can exist in general relativity (e.g., Tolman VII solution), their scalarized counterparts cannot {be constructed} even in the limiting case of …
We study self-gravitating stars in the bootstrapped Newtonian picture for polytropic equations of state. We consider stars that span a wide range of compactness values. Both matter density and pressure are sources of the gravitational potential. Numerical solutions show that the density profiles can be well approximated by Gaussian functions. Later we assume Gaussian density profiles to investigate the interplay between the compactness of the source, the width of the Gaussian density profile and the polytropic index. We also dedicate a section to comparing the pressure and density profiles of …
We are investigating universal relations between different normalisations of the moment of inertia and the compactness of neutron and strange stars. Slowly rotating as well as rapidly rotating models are studied in General Relativity, $\mathcal{R}^2$ gravity and scalar--tensor theories of gravity. Moment of inertia -- compactness relations are examined for different normalisations of the moment of inertia. It is shown that for all studied cases the deviations from EOS universality are small for the examined equations of state. It turns out that in some of the cases the examined relations are a…
A foundational theorem due to Buchdahl states that, within General Relativity (GR), the maximum compactness $\mathcal{C}\equiv GM/(Rc^2)$ of a static, spherically symmetric, perfect fluid object of mass $M$ and radius $R$ is $\mathcal{C}=4/9$. As a corollary, there exists a compactness gap between perfect fluid stars and black holes (where $\mathcal{C}=1/2$). Here we generalize Buchdahl's result by introducing the most general equation of state for elastic matter with constant longitudinal wave speeds and apply it to compute the maximum compactness of regular, self-gravitating objects in GR. W…
We investigate the compactness, masses and radii of realistic neutron stars (NSs) and quark stars (QSs) within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory of gravity, and the energy conditions of their apparent equation of states (EOSs). We show that the maximum compactness and maximum masses constraints extracted from the recent pulsars masses and radii observations can provide the upper and lower limits of $κ$ value of EiBI theory. By using BSP parameter set of relativistic mean field (RMF) model to describe NS core EOS including hyperons, it can be estimated that $ (2.7 \le κ_g \le 7.9…
The spacetime surrounding compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes provides an excellent place to study gravity in the strong, non-linear, dynamical regime. Here, the effects of strong curvature can leave their imprint on observables which we may use to study gravity. Recently, NICER provided a mass and radius measurement of an isolated neutron star using x-rays, while LIGO/Virgo measured the tidal deformability of neutron stars through gravitational waves. These measurements can be used to test the relation between the tidal deformability and compactness of neutron stars that are…
We study binary mergers in bootstrapped Newtonian gravity, where higher-order couplings are added to the non-relativistic Lagrangian for the Newtonian potential. In this theory, the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass differs from both the proper mass of Newtonian gravity and the proper mass of general relativity, which affects the interpretation of astrophysical and cosmological events. The aforementioned difference particularly provides important phenomenological constraints for the mass of the emitted matter and the compactness of the final object after the merger. The interpretation of the GW…
We present a simple quantum description of the gravitational collapse of a ball of dust which excludes those states whose width is arbitrarily smaller than the gravitational radius of the matter source and supports the conclusion that black holes are macroscopic extended objects. We also comment briefly on the relevance of this result for the ultraviolet self-completion of gravity and the corpuscular picture of black holes.
A non-linear equation obtained by adding gravitational self-interaction terms to the Poisson equation for Newtonian gravity is here employed in order to analyse a static spherically sym- metric homogeneous compact source of given proper mass and radius and the outer vacuum. The main feature of this picture is that, although the freedom of shifting the potential by an ar- bitrary constant is of course lost, the solutions remain qualitatively very close to the Newtonian behaviour. We also notice that the negative gravitational potential energy is smaller than the proper mass for sources with sma…
A number of recent works have highlighted that it is possible to express the properties of general-relativistic stellar equilibrium configurations in terms of functions that do not depend on the specific equation of state employed to describe matter at nuclear densities. These functions are normally referred to as "universal relations" and have been found to apply, within limits, both to static or stationary isolated stars, as well as to fully dynamical and merging binary systems. Further extending the idea that universal relations can be valid also away from stability, we show that a universa…
We study the bound on the compactness of a stellar object in pure Lovelock theories of arbitrary order in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, involving electromagnetic field. The bound we derive for a generic pure Lovelock theory, reproduces the known results in four dimensional Einstein gravity. Both the case of a charged shell and that of a charge sphere demonstrates that for a given spacetime dimension, stars in general relativity are more compact than the stars in pure Lovelock theories. In addition, as the strength of the Maxwell field increases, the stellar structures become more compact, i.…
One of the macroscopically measurable effects of gravity is the tidal deformability of astrophysical objects, which can be quantified by their tidal Love numbers. For planets and stars, these numbers measure the resistance of their material against the tidal forces, and the resulting contribution to their gravitational multipole moments. According to general relativity, nonrotating deformed black holes, instead, show no addition to their gravitational multipole moments, and all of their Love numbers are zero. In this paper we explore different configurations of nonrotating compact and ultracom…
The lore paradigm for solving so-called horizon and flatness problems in cosmology is the primordial inflation. Plethora of inflationary models have been built in last decades and first experimental probes seem to appear in favor of the inflationary paradigm. We will focus here on one of them, the Higgs inflation, and show the combined constraint required for such a model at cosmological as well as gravitational scales, i.e. for compact objects. We will show that Higgs inflation model gives rise to particlelike solutions around compact objects, dubbed Higgs monopoles, characterized by the nonm…

We present a class of relativistic solutions of cold compact anisotropic stars in hydrostatic equilibrium in the framework of higher dimensions using spheroidal geometry. The solutions obtained with Vaidya-Tikekar metric are used to construct stellar models of compact objects and studied their physical features. The effects of anisotropy and extra dimensions on the global properties namely, compactness, mass, radius, equation of state are determined in higher dimensions in terms of the spheroidicity parameter ($λ$). It is noted that for a given configuration, compactness of a star is found sma…
In this article, we demonstrated a stellar model for compact star in presence of strange matter embedded in $D\ge4$ dimensional space-time defind by Finch-Skea metric. To study the relevant physical properties of the interior matter, we consider the equation of state $(henceforth~EOS)$ as proposed in MIT bag model given by $p=\frac{1}{3}(ρ-4B)$, where $B$ is termed as bag constant. The Mass-Radius relationships in four and higher dimensions are determined using the range of values of surface density through the relation $ρ_{s}=4B$ for which bulk strange matter may be a viable issue for compact…
Two ways to deduce the equivalence of the field equations of general relativity and the principle of maximum force $c^4/4G$ - or the equivalent maximum power $c^5/4G$ - are presented. A simple deduction of inverse square gravity directly from maximum force arises. Recent apparent counterarguments are refuted. New tests of the principle in astronomy, cosmology, electrodynamics, numerical gravitation and quantum gravity are proposed.
We investigate the upper mass limit predictions of the baryonic mass for static neutron stars in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. We use the most popular $f(R)$ gravity model, namely the $R^2$ gravity, and calculate the maximum baryon mass of static neutron stars adopting several realistic equations of state and one ideal equation of state, namely that of causal limit. Our motivation is based on the fact that neutron stars with baryon masses larger than the maximum mass for static neutron star configurations inevitably collapse to black holes. Thus with our analysis, we want further to enlighten…
In this paper, we explore the properties of white dwarfs with the modified TOV equation in Einstein-$Λ$ gravity, the equilibrium configurations predict a maximum mass limit for white dwarfs same as the Chandrasekhar limit when we consider $Λ$ to be very small($Λ<10^{-16}$ m$^{-2}$), by increasing $Λ$, the maximum mass and radius of white dwarf are reduced. We study effects of the cosmological constant on the physical properties of white dwarf such as $M-ρ_c$ relation, $M-R$ relation, Schwarzschild radius, average density, compactness, gravitational redshift and dynamical stability. The gravita…
Boson stars coupled to Einstein's general relativity possess some features similar to gravastars, such as the anisotropy in principal pressures and relatively large compactness ($μ_{max} = 0.32$). However, no matter how large the self-interaction is, the ordinary boson star cannot obtain arbitrarily large compression and as such does not represent a good black hole mimicker. When the boson star is nonminimally coupled to gravity, the resulting configurations resemble more the dark energy stars then the ordinary boson stars, with compactness significantly larger then that in ordinary boson star…
Current study highlights the physical characteristics of charged anisotropic compact stars by exploring some exact solutions of modified field equations in $f(R,G)$ gravity. A comprehensive analysis is performed from the obtained solutions regarding stability, energy conditions, regularity, sound velocity and compactness. These solutions can be referred to model the compact celestial entities. In particular, a compact star named, $Her X-1$ has been modeled which indicates that current solution fits and is in conformity to the observational data as well. A useful and interesting fact from this …
The pulse profile from a neutron star in scalar-tensor theory of gravity is examined for several stellar models, where we assume the existence of the antipodal hot spots on the neutron star based on the polar cap model. Then, we find that the pulse profile from the scalarized neutron star in scalar-tensor gravity is almost the same as that in general relativity, i.e., without a scalar field, if the stellar compactness of the both stars is very similar. That is, the existence of the scalar field does not directly change the pulse profile from the neutron star, while the stellar compactness is c…
A compact summary of present fundamental physics is given and evaluated. Its 9 lines describe all observations exactly and contain both general relativity and the standard model of particle physics. Their precise agreement with experiments, in combination with their extreme simplicity and their internal consistency, suggest that there are no experimental effects beyond the two theories. The combined properties of the 9 lines also imply concrete suggestions for the microscopic constituents in a complete theory of relativistic quantum gravity. It is shown that the microscopic constituents cannot…
We investigate the causal limit of maximum mass for stars in the framework of$f(R)$ gravity. We choose a causal equation of state, with variable speed of sound, and with the transition density and pressure corresponding to the SLy equation of state. The transition density is chosen to be equal to twice the saturation density $ρ_t\sim 2ρ_0$, and also the analysis is performed for the transition density, chosen to be equal to the saturation density $ρ_t\sim ρ_0$. We examine numerically the combined effect of the stiff causal equation of state and of the sound speed on the maximum mass of static …
Within the framework of $f(R)=R+αR^2$ gravity, we study realistic models of neutron stars, using equations of state compatible with the LIGO constraints. i.e. APR4, MPA1, SLy, and WW1. By numerically solving modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, we investigate the Mass--Radius relation in both metric and torsional $f(R)=R+αR^2$ gravity models. In particular, we observe that torsion effects decrease the compactness and total mass of neutron star with respect to the General Relativity predictions, therefore mimicking the effects of a repulsive massive field. The opposite occurs in the m…
The compact stars are promising candidates associated with the generation of gravitational waves (GWs). In this work, we study a special type of compact stars known as strange stars in the $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity Palatini formalism. Here we consider three promising $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models viz., Starobinsky, Hu-Sawicki and Gogoi-Goswami models in the domain of MIT Bag model and linear equations of state (EoSs). We compute the stellar structures numerically and constrained the $f(\mathcal{R})$ model parameters with a set of probable strange star candidates. The study shows that the cons…
It is shown that adding hair like electric charge or angular momentum to the black hole decreases the amount of entropy emission. This motivates us to study the emission rate of entropy from black holes and conjecture a maximum limit (upper bound) on the rate of local entropy emission ($\dot{S}$) for thermal systems in four dimensional space time and argue that this upper bound is $\dot{S}\simeq k_{B} \sqrt{\frac{c^5}{\hbar G}}$. Also by considering Rènyi entropy, it is shown that Bekenstein-Hawking entropy leads to a maximum limit for the rate of entropy emission. We also suggest an upper bou…
The maximum mass limits of neutron stars in scalar-tensor gravity is discussed and compared with the limits set by general relativity. The limit is parametrized with respect to the combination of the nuclear saturation parameters and the maximum sound velocity in the core. It is shown that, for smaller values of the sound velocity in the core, the maximum mass limit of the scalarized neutron stars is larger than that of in general relativity. However, for stiff equations of state with sound velocity higher than $79\%$ of the velocity of light, the maximum mass limit in general relativity is la…
In this paper, we consider static spherical structure to develop some anisotropic solutions by employing the extended gravitational decoupling scheme in the background of $f(\mathcal{R},\mathcal{T},\mathcal{R}_{γχ}\mathcal{T}^{γχ})$ gravity, where $\mathcal{R}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ indicate the Ricci scalar and trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively. We transform both radial as well as temporal metric functions and apply them on the field equations that produce two different sets corresponding to the decoupling parameter $ξ$. The first set is associated with isotropic distribution, i.e…
We obtain the Buchdahl compactness limit for a pure Lovelock static fluid star and verify that the limit following from the uniform density Schwarzschild's interior solution, which is universal irrespective of the gravitational theory (Einstein or Lovelock), is true in general. In terms of surface potential $Φ(r)$, it means at the surface of the star $r=r_{0}$, $Φ(r_{0}) < 2N(d-N-1)/(d-1)^2$ where $d$, $N$ respectively indicate spacetime dimensions and Lovelock order. For a given $N$, $Φ(r_{0})$ is maximum for $d=2N+2$ while it is always $4/9$, Buchdahl's limit, for $d=3N+1$. It is also remark…
We study equilibrium configurations of a homogenous ball of matter in a bootstrapped description of gravity which includes a gravitational self-interaction term beyond the Newtonian coupling. Both matter density and pressure are accounted for as sources of the gravitational potential for test particles. Unlike the general relativistic case, no Buchdahl limit is found and the pressure can in principle support a star of arbitrarily large compactness. By defining the horizon as the location where the escape velocity of test particles equals the speed of light, like in Newtonian gravity, we find a…
Considering the corrected Unruh temperature as well as the entropic force perspective of gravity, we are able to derive the modification of the Newton's law of gravity. In addition, we also investigate the effects of the highest achievable acceleration correction to the Unruh temperature on the Poisson equation. Moreover, we address modifications to the Newtonian cosmology as well as the Friedmann equations corresponding to the upper bound for acceleration.
The construction of accurate and consistent initial data for various binary parameters is a critical ingredient for numerical relativity simulations of the compact binary coalescence. In this article, we present an upgrade of the pseudospectral SGRID code, which enables us to access even larger regions of the binary neutron star parameter space. As a proof of principle, we present a selected set of first simulations based on initial configurations computed with the new code version. In particular, we simulate two millisecond pulsars close to their breakup spin, highly compact neutron stars wit…
This paper is devoted to explore some relativistic configurations of stellar objects for static spherically symmetric structures in the context of modified $f(\mathcal{G})$ gravity, by exploiting the Tolman-Kuchowicz spacetime [1,2]. We develop the equations of motion for spherically symmetric spacetime in the presence of anisotropic matter distribution by considering the physically valid expressions of the metric potentials, $ν=Br^2+2lnC$ and $λ=ln(1 + ar^2+br^4)$. To attain the values of the unknown constants we consider the observational data of $Cen~ X-3$, $EXO ~1785-248$ and $LMC~ X-4$ st…
The maximum size of a cosmic structure is given by the maximum turnaround radius -- the scale where the attraction due to its mass is balanced by the repulsion due to dark energy. We derive generic formulae for the estimation of the maximum turnaround radius in any theory of gravity obeying the Einstein equivalence principle, in two situations: on a spherically symmetric spacetime and on a perturbed Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We show that the two formulae agree. As an application of our formula, we calculate the maximum turnaround radius in the case of the Brans-Dicke theory of gravi…
Regarding a $d-$dimensional spherically symmetric line element in the context of Einstein-$Λ$ gravity, the hydrostatic equilibrium equation of stars is obtained. Then, by using the lowest order constrained variational (LOCV) method with the AV$18$ potential and employing microscopic many body calculations in the modern equation of state, the structure properties of neutron stars are investigated. Regardless of cosmological point of view and considering arbitrary positive and negative values of the cosmological constant, the maximum mass of the neutron stars and their corresponding radius in $4…
This paper aims to explore a class of static stellar equilibrium configuration of relativistic charged spheres made of a charged perfect fluid. Solving the Einstein-Maxwell field equations, we consider a particularized metric potential, Buchdahl ansatz [ Phys. Rev.116, 1027 (1959)] and then by using a simple transformation. The study is developed by matching the interior region with Riessner-Nordstr$\dot{\text{o}}$m metric as an exterior solution. The matter content the charged sphere satisfies all the energy conditions and hydrostatic equilibrium equation, i.e. the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer…
The current trend concerning dense matter physics at sufficiently high densities and low temperatures is expected to behave as a degenerate Fermi gas of quarks forming Cooper pairs, namely a color superconductor, in the core of compact objects. In this context, we study the anisotropy of quark stars (QSs) assuming the internal composition to be comprised of homogeneous, charge neutral 3-flavor interacting quark matter with $\mathcal{O}(m_s^4)$ corrections. Using the equation of state (EoS) with the Tolmann-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) structure equations, we perform numerical calculation for quar…
