In this work we examine the effective four-dimensional world that emanates from a general class of static spherical Ricci-flat solutions in Kaluza-Klein gravity in $D$-dimensions. By means of dimensional reduction we obtain a family of asymptotically flat Schwarzschild-like metrics for which all the components of the Ricci tensor, except for $R_{11}$, are zero. Although the reduced spacetime is not empty, it is similar to vacuum in the sense that the effective matter satisfies an equation of state which is the generalization of $(ρ+ 3p) = 0$ for "nongravitating matter" in 4D. In Kaluza-Klein gravity these Schwarzschild-like metrics describe the exterior of a spherical star without rotation. In this framework, we generalize the well-known Buchdahl's theorem for perfect fluid spheres whose mass density does not increase outward. Without any additional assumptions, we develop the most general expression for the compactness limit of a star. We provide some numerical values for it, which in principle are observationally testable and allow us to compare and contrast different theories and exteriors. We find that in Kaluza-Klein gravity the compactness limit of a star can be larger than 1/2, without being a black hole: the general-relativistic upper limit $M/R < 4/9$ is increased as we go away from the Schwarzschild vacuum exterior. We show how this limit depends on the number of dimensions of spacetime, and demonstrate that the effects of gravity are stronger in 4D than in any other number of dimensions.
We studied the Raychaudhuri equation in Kaluza-Klein space-time. We derived an additional term that is solely due to Kaluza-Klein's unification. This term affects the defocus of world lines near the singularity of charged higher-dimensional black holes. We illustrated it with a static higher-dimensional black hole generated by Einstein-Maxwell equations. It has been found that the term derived modifies the repulsive effect of kaluza Klein scalar on world lines. We proved some mathematical theorems which give an insight into the interior of the black holes.
We consider a Kaluza-Klein string solution of five-dimensional spacetime. We study its physical properties as appearing in (3+1) spacetime. This metric embraces several different aspects of solutions. The two most notable examples are the dipole and the boosted dipole solutions. In general, the 4D metric is a rotating stationary solution with both electric and magnetic fields. The extension to the Kaluza-Klein dipole soliton solution is briefly discussed.
Kaluza-Klein theory is a popular alternative theory of gravity, with both non-rotating and rotating black hole solutions known. This allows for the possibility that the theory could be observationally tested. We present a model which calculates the reflection spectrum of a black hole accretion disk system, where the black hole is described by a rotating solution of the Kaluza-Klein theory. We also use this model to analyze X-ray data from the stella-mass black hole in GRS 1915+105 and provide constraints on the free parameters of the Kaluza-Klein black holes.
In this article we study the geodesic motion of charged particles in the spacetime of an extremal rotating dyonic black hole in Kaluza-Klein theory. We derive the equations of motion and present their analytical solutions in terns of elliptic and hyperelliptic functions. Furthermore, we analyze the geodesic motions with the help of parametric diagrams and effective potentials.
We develop a new mechanism for the accumulation of conserved numbers in the early Universe in Kaluza-Klein-like theories. The relaxation of the primordial extra space perturbations existing in the early Universe leads to the establishment of a symmetric final state and the appearance of Killing vectors. As a result, the initial non-zero value of symmetry associated numbers occurs after the inflation. We show this conceptual idea on a toy model of 2-dimensional apple-like extra space with U(1) symmetry. This mechanism naturally arises in the Kaluza-Klein theories and can be used to explain the …
We investigate the destroying of charged and rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-(dilaton) theory. We show that a test particle with some appropriate properties in the black hole background can turn the black hole into a naked singularity. In this work, we neglect the self-force, self-energy, and radiative effects as considered by some others in literature. As the result, we are able to show that the Kerr-Newman and Kaluza-Klein black holes can be destroyed by the test particle. Furthermore, for Kaluza-Klein black hole, we consider the overspinning of the black hole by a neutral test scal…
The stability of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes is studied. The squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole looks like five dimensional black hole in the vicinity of horizon and four dimensional Minkowski spacetime with a circle at infinity. In this sense, squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes can be regarded as black holes in the Kaluza-Klein spacetimes. Using the symmetry of squashed Kaluza-Klein black holes, $SU(2)\times U(1)\simeq U(2)$, we obtain master equations for a part of the metric perturbations relevant to the stability. The analysis based on the master equations gives a strong evidence for th…
We compute the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the non-supersymmetric SO(3)$\,\times\,$SO(3)-invariant AdS$_4$ vacuum of 11-dimensional supergravity, whose lowest-lying Kaluza-Klein modes belong to a consistent truncation to 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity and are stable. We show that, nonetheless, the higher Kaluza-Klein modes become tachyonic so that this non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacuum is perturbatively unstable within 11-dimensional supergravity. This represents the first example of unstable higher Kaluza-Klein modes and provides further evidence for the AdS swampland conjecture, which …
We reconsider Schoen and Yau's proof of the positive mass theorem from the extra dimensional point of view, and we introduce a modified argument to prove the theorem in the Kaluza-Klein picture. We consider in this study an alternative condition to Jang's equation, which makes the argument more physically intuitive.
Exceptional field theories yield duality covariant formulations of supergravity. We show that they provide a highly efficient tool to compute the Kaluza-Klein mass spectra associated to compactifications around various background geometries relevant for string theory and holographic applications. This includes geometries with little to no remaining symmetries, hardly accessible to standard methods. As an illustration, we work out the masses of some higher Kaluza-Klein multiplets around warped geometries corresponding to some prominent ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric AdS vacua in maximal supergra…
