A map $c:V(G)\rightarrow\{1,\dots,k\}$ of a graph $G$ is a packing $k$-coloring if every two different vertices of the same color $i\in \{1,\dots,k\}$ are at distance more than $i$. The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a packing $k$-coloring. In this paper we introduce the notion of \textit{Grundy packing chromatic number}, analogous to the Grundy chromatic number of a graph. We first present a polynomial-time algorithm that is based on a greedy approach and gives a packing coloring of $G$. We then define the Grundy packing chromatic number $Γ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ as the maximum value that this algorithm yields in a graph $G$. We present several properties of $Γ_ρ(G)$, provide results on the complexity of the problem as well as bounds and some exact results for $Γ_ρ(G)$.
The Grundy number of a graph $G$ is the maximum number of colors used by the First-Fit coloring of $G$ and is denoted by $Γ(G)$. Similarly, the ${\rm b}$-chromatic number ${\rm{b}}(G)$ of $G$ expresses the worst case behavior of another well-known coloring procedure i.e. color-dominating coloring of $G$. We obtain some families of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ for which there exists a function $f(x)$ such that $Γ(G)\leq f({\rm{b}}(G))$, for each graph $G$ from the family. Call any such family $(Γ,b)$-bounded family. We conjecture that the family of ${\rm b}$-monotone graphs is $(Γ,b)$-bounded and valid…
A b-coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that each color class has at least one vertex which is adjacent to each other color class. The b-spectrum of $G$ is the set $S_{b}(G)$ of integers $k$ such that $G$ has a b-coloring with $k$ colors and $b(G)=\max S_{b}(G)$ is the b-chromatic number of $G$. A graph is b-continous if $S_{b}(G)=[χ(G),b(G)]\cap \mathbb{Z}$. An infinite number of graphs that are not b-continuous is known. It is also known that graphs with girth at least 10 are b-continuous. A partial Grundy coloring is a proper coloring $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that e…
The first-fit coloring is a heuristic that assigns to each vertex, arriving in a specified order $σ$, the smallest available color. The problem Grundy Coloring asks how many colors are needed for the most adversarial vertex ordering $σ$, i.e., the maximum number of colors that the first-fit coloring requires over all possible vertex orderings. Since its inception by Grundy in 1939, Grundy Coloring has been examined for its structural and algorithmic aspects. A brute-force $f(k)n^{2^{k-1}}$-time algorithm for Grundy Coloring on general graphs is not difficult to obtain, where $k$ is the number …
For a nondecreasing sequence of integers $S=(s_1, s_2, \ldots)$ an $S$-packing $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a mapping from $V(G)$ to $\{1, 2,\ldots,k\}$ such that vertices with color $i$ have pairwise distance greater than $s_i$. By setting $s_i = d + \lfloor \frac{i-1}{n} \rfloor$ we obtain a $(d,n)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$. The smallest integer $k$ for which there exists a $(d,n)$-packing coloring of $G$ is called the $(d,n)$-packing chromatic number of $G$. In the special case when $d$ and $n$ are both equal to one we speak of the packing chromatic number of $G$. We determine the …
Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $χ_ρ(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier …
For $1\leq s_1 \le s_2 \le \ldots \le s_k$ and a graph $G$, a packing $(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$-coloring of $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into sets $V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k$ such that, for each $1\leq i \leq k$, the distance between any two distinct $x,y\in V_i$ is at least $s_i + 1$. The packing chromatic number, $χ_p(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring. It is known that there are trees of maximum degree 4 and subcubic graphs $G$ with arbitrarily large $χ_p(G)$. Recently, there was a series of papers on packing $(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$…
Given a graph $G$ and a non-decreasing sequence $S=(a_1,a_2,\ldots)$ of positive integers, the mapping $f:V(G) \rightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is an $S$-packing $k$-coloring of $G$ if for any distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ with $f(u)=f(v)=i$ the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is greater than $a_i$. The smallest $k$ such that $G$ has an $S$-packing $k$-coloring is the $S$-packing chromatic number, $χ_S(G)$, of $G$. In this paper, we consider the distance graphs $G(\mathbb{Z},\{2,t\})$, where $t>1$ is an odd integer, which has $\mathbb{Z}$ as its vertex set, and $i,j\in\mathbb{Z}$ are adjacent…
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $V_i$, $i\in \{1,\ldots,k\}$, where each $V_i$ is an $i$-packing. In this paper, we consider the packing chromatic number of several families of Sierpiński-type graphs. While it is known that this number is bounded from above by $8$ in the family of Sierpiński graphs with base $3$, we prove that it is unbounded in the families of Sierpiński graphs with bases greater than $3$. On the other hand, we prove that the packing chromatic number in the family of …
Complete colorings have the property that any two color classes has at least an edge between them. Parameters such as the Grundy, achromatic and pseudoachromatic numbers comes from complete colorings, with some additional requirement. In this paper, we estimate these numbers in the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ for some values of $n$ and $k$. We give the exact value of the achromatic number of $K(n,2)$.
For a sequence of non-decreasing positive integers $S = (s_1, \ldots, s_k)$, a packing $S$-coloring is a partition of $V(G)$ into sets $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that for each $1\leq i \leq k$ the distance between any two distinct $x,y\in V_i$ is at least $s_i+1$. The smallest $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring is called the packing chromatic number of $G$ and is denoted by $χ_p(G)$. For a graph $G$, let $D(G)$ denote the graph obtained from $G$ by subdividing every edge. The question whether $χ_p(D(G)) \le 5$ for all subcubic graphs was first asked by Gastineau and Togni…

We extend the Grundy number and the ochromatic number, parameters on graph colorings, to digraph colorings, we call them {\emph{digrundy number}} and {\emph{diochromatic number}}, respectively. First, we prove that for every digraph the diochromatic number equals the digrundy number (as it happen for graphs). Then, we prove the interpolation property and the Nordhaus-Gaddum relations for the digrundy number, and improve the Nordhaus-Gaddum relations for the dichromatic and diachromatic numbers bounded previously by the authors in [Electron. J. Combin. 25 (2018) no. 3, Paper {\#} 3.51, 17 pp.]
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $Π_1,\ldots,Π_k$, where $Π_i$, $i\in [k]$, is an $i$-packing. The following conjecture is posed and studied: if $G$ is a subcubic graph, then $χ_ρ(S(G))\le 5$, where $S(G)$ is the subdivision of $G$. The conjecture is proved for all generalized prisms of cycles. To get this result it is proved that if $G$ is a generalized prism of a cycle, then $G$ is $(1,1,2,2)$-colorable if and only if $G$ is not the Petersen graph. The validity of the conjecture is fu…
Given a non-decreasing sequence $S=(s\_1,s\_2, \ldots, s\_k)$ of positive integers, an {\em $S$-packing coloring} of a graph $G$ is a mapping $c$ from $V(G)$ to $\{s\_1,s\_2, \ldots, s\_k\}$ such that any two vertices with color $s\_i$ are at mutual distance greater than $s\_i$, $1\le i\le k$. This paper studies $S$-packing colorings of (sub)cubic graphs. We prove that subcubic graphs are $(1,2,2,2,2,2,2)$-packing colorable and $(1,1,2,2,3)$-packing colorable. For subdivisions of subcubic graphs we derive sharper bounds, and we provide an example of a cubic graph of order $38$ which is not $(1…
Given a non-decreasing sequence S = (s 1,s 2,. .. ,s k) of positive integers, an S-packing edge-coloring of a graph G is a partition of the edge set of G into k subsets {X 1 ,X 2,. .. ,X k } such that for each 1 $\le$ i $\le$ k, the distance between two distinct edges e, e ' $\in$ X i is at least s i + 1. This paper studies S-packing edge-colorings of cubic graphs. Among other results, we prove that cubic graphs having a 2-factor are (1,1,1,3,3)-packing edge-colorable, (1,1,1,4,4,4,4,4)-packing edge-colorable and (1,1,2,2,2,2,2)-packing edge-colorable. We determine sharper results for cubic gr…
Consider a directed analogue of the random graph process on $n$ vertices, where the $n(n-1)$ edges are ordered uniformly at random and revealed one at a time. It is known that w.h.p.\@ the first digraph in this process with both in-degree and out-degree $\geq q$ has a $[q]$-edge-coloring with a Hamilton cycle in each color. We show that this coloring can be constructed online, where each edge must be irrevocably colored as soon as it appears. In a similar fashion, for the \emph{undirected} random graph process, we present an online $[n]$-edge-coloring algorithm which yields w.h.p.\@ $q$ disjoi…
Given a graph $G$, a coloring $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that $c(u)=c(v)=i$ implies that vertices $u$ and $v$ are at distance greater than $i$, is called a packing coloring of $G$. The minimum number of colors in a packing coloring of $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, and is denoted by $χ_ρ(G)$. In this paper, we propose the study of $χ_ρ$-critical graphs, which are the graphs $G$ such that for any proper subgraph $H$ of $G$, $χ_ρ(H)<χ_ρ(G)$. We characterize $χ_ρ$-critical graphs with diameter 2, and $χ_ρ$-critical block graphs with diameter 3. Furthermore, we…

A packing $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into sets $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that for each $1\leq i\leq k$ the distance between any two distinct $x,y\in V_i$ is at least $i+1$. The packing chromatic number, $χ_p(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $k$-coloring. Sloper showed that there are $4$-regular graphs with arbitrarily large packing chromatic number. The question whether the packing chromatic number of subcubic graphs is bounded appears in several papers. We answer this question in the negative. Moreover, we show that for every fixed $k$ a…
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $k$-vertex coloring of $G$ in which any two vertices receiving color $i$ are at distance at least $i+1$. It is proved that in the class of subcubic graphs the packing chromatic number is bigger than $13$, thus answering an open problem from [Gastineau, Togni, $S$-packing colorings of cubic graphs, Discrete Math.\ 339 (2016) 2461--2470]. In addition, the packing chromatic number is investigated with respect to several local operations. In particular, if $S_e(G)$ is the graph obtained from a…
Let $\mathcal{R}$ be a family of axis-parallel rectangles in the plane. The transversal number $τ(\mathcal{R})$ is the minimum number of points needed to pierce all the rectangles. The independence number $ν(\mathcal{R})$ is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint rectangles. Given a positive real number $r$, we say that $\mathcal{R}$ is an r-bounded family if, for any rectangle in $\mathcal{R}$, the aspect ratio of the longer side over the shorter side is at most $r$. Gyárfás and Lehel asked if it is possible to bound the transversal number $τ(\mathcal{R})$ with a linear function of the indep…
