We consider a variant of the strong multiplicity one theorem. Let $π_{1}$ and $π_{2}$ be two unitary cuspidal automorphic representations for $\mathrm{GL(2)}$ that are not twist-equivalent. We find a lower bound for the lower Dirichlet density of the set of places for which $\left\lvert a_{v}(π_{1}) \right\rvert > \left\lvert a_{v}(π_{2}) \right\rvert$, where $a_{v}(π_{i})$ is the trace of Langlands conjugacy class of $π_{i}$ at $v$. One consequence of this result is an improvement on the existing bound on the lower Dirichlet density of the set of places for which $\left\lvert a_{v}(π_{1})\right\rvert \neq \left\lvert a_{v}(π_{2}) \right\rvert$.
Marvin Knopp developed the theory of automorphic integrals, which generalize automorphic forms; each automorphic integral has an additional period function in its automorphic relation. The period functions satisfy relations that arise from the underlying group relations. Knopp showed that entire automorphic integrals with rational period functions satisfy a Hecke correspondence theorem, provided the rational period functions have poles only at 0 or infinity. For other automorphic integrals each corresponding Dirichlet series has a functional equation with a remainder term that arises from the …
Given a self-dual cuspidal automorphic representation for GL(2) over a number field, we establish the existence of an infinite number of Hecke eigenvalues that are greater than an explicit positive constant, and an infinite number of Hecke eigenvalues that are less than an explicit negative constant. This provides an answer to a question of Serre. We also consider analogous problems for cuspidal automorphic representations that are not self-dual.
We show that the systems of prime-to-$p$ Hecke eigenvalues arising from automorphic forms$\pmod p$ for a good prime $p$ associated to an algebraic group $G/\mathbb Q$ of Hodge type are the same as those arising from algebraic modular forms$\pmod p$ associated to an inner form of $G$.
Let $π$ be a cohomological automorphic representation of $PGL(2)$ over a number field of arbitrary signature and assume that the local component of $π$ at a prime $\mathfrak{p}$ is the Steinberg representation. In this situation one can define an automorphic $\mathcal{L}$-invariant for each cohomological degree in which the system of Hecke eigenvalues associated to $π$ occurs. We show that these $\mathcal{L}$-invariants are (essentially) the same if the $π$-isotypic component of the cohomology is generated by the minimal degree cohomology as a module over Venkatesh's derived Hecke algebra.
In this paper, we describe the asymptotic distribution of Hecke eigenvalues in the Laplace eigenvalue aspect for certain families of Hecke-Maass forms on compact arithmetic quotients. Instead of relying on the trace formula, which was the primary tool in preceding studies on the subject, we use Fourier integral operator methods. This allows us to treat not only spherical, but also non-spherical Hecke-Maass forms with corresponding remainder estimates. Our asymptotic formulas are available for arbitrary simple and connected algebraic groups over number fields with cocompact arithmetic subgroups…
We consider the genus of $20$ classes of unimodular Hermitian lattices of rank $12$ over the Eisenstein integers. This set is the domain for a certain space of algebraic modular forms. We find a basis of Hecke eigenforms, and guess global Arthur parameters for the associated automorphic representations, which recover the computed Hecke eigenvalues. Congruences between Hecke eigenspaces, combined with the assumed parameters, recover known congruences for classical modular forms, and support new instances of conjectured Eisenstein congruences for $\mathbb{U}(2,2)$ automorphic forms.
In this paper we prove a version of Deligne's conjecture for potentially automorphic motives, twisted by certain algebraic Hecke characters. The Hecke characters are chosen in such a way that we can use automorphic methods in the context of totally definite unitary groups.
We use a method of Buzzard to study p-adic families of different types of modular forms - classical, over imaginary quadratic fields and totally real fields. In the case of totally real fields of even degree, we get local constancy of dimensions of spaces of fixed slope and varying weight. For imaginary quadratic fields we obtain bounds independent of the weight on the dimensions of such spaces.
We develop cohomological interpretations for several types of automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume. We then use these interpretations to establish explicit isomorphisms between spaces of automorphic forms, cohomology spaces and spaces of eigenfunctions of transfer operators. These results show a deep relation between spectral entities of Hecke surfaces of infinite volume and the dynamics of their geodesic flows.
We prove a commutative algebra result which has consequences for congruences between automorphic forms modulo prime powers. If C denotes the congruence module for a fixed automorphic Hecke eigenform π_0 we prove an exact relation between the p-adic valuation of the order of C and the sum of the exponents of p-power congruences between the Hecke eigenvalues of π_0 and other automorphic forms. We apply this result to several situations including the congruences described by Mazur's Eisenstein ideal.
We prove for L-function attached to an automorphic cusp form for the Hecke congruence group $Γ_0(D)$, which is also an eigenfunction of all the Hecke operators, that a positive proportion of its non-trivial zeros lie on the critical line. This result extends the work of J.L. Hafner of 1983 where the case of the full modular group is considered.
This is a first part of a series of papers in which we develop explicit computational methods for automorphic forms for GL(3) and PGL(3) over elliptic function fields. In this first part, we determine explicit formulas for the action of the Hecke operators on automorphic forms on GL(2) and GL(3) in terms of their graphs. Our primary result consists in a complete description of the graphs of degree 1 Hecke operators for GL(3). As complementary results, we describe the 'even component' of the graphs of degree 2 Hecke operators for GL(2) and the 'neighborhood of the identity' of the graphs of deg…
Let $F$ be the function field of an elliptic curve $X$ over $\F_q$. In this paper, we calculate explicit formulas for unramified Hecke operators acting on automorphic forms over $F$. We determine these formulas in the language of the graph of an Hecke operator, for which we use its interpretation in terms of $¶^1$-bundles on $X$. This allows a purely geometric approach, which involves, amongst others, a classification of the $¶^1$-bundles on $X$. We apply the computed formulas to calculate the dimension of the space of unramified cusp forms and the support of a cusp form. We show that a cuspid…
Let πbe a unitary cuspidal automorphic representation for GL(n) over a number field. We establish upper bounds on the number of Hecke eigenvalues of πequal to a fixed complex number. For GL(2), we also determine upper bounds on the number of Hecke eigenvalues with absolute value equal to a fixed number γ; in the case γ=0, this answers a question of Serre. These bounds are then improved upon by restricting to non-dihedral representations. Finally, we obtain analogous bounds for a family of cuspidal automorphic representations for GL(3).
This is an expository article that concerns the various related notions of algebraic idele class characters, the Groessencharaktere of Hecke, and cohomological automorphic representations of GL(1), all under the general title of algebraic Hecke characters. The first part of the article systematically lays the foundations of algebraic Hecke characters. The only pre-requisites are: basic algebraic number theory, familiarity with the adelic language, and basic sheaf theory. Observations that play a crucial role in the arithmetic of automorphic L-functions are also discussed. The second part of th…
We find experimental examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues between automorphic representations of groups such as $\mathrm{GSp}_2(\mathbb{A})$, $\mathrm{SO}(4,3)(\mathbb{\mathbb{A}})$ and $\mathrm{SO}(5,4)(\mathbb{A})$, where the prime modulus should, for various reasons, appear in the algebraic part of a critical "tensor-product" $L$-value associated to cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A})$ and $\mathrm{GSp}_2(\mathbb{A})$. Using special techniques for evaluating $L$-functions with few known coefficients, we compute sufficiently good approximations to detec…
Let $λ_ϕ(n)$ be the Fourier coefficients of a Hecke holomorphic or Hecke--Maass cusp form on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$, and $f$ be any multiplicative function that satisfies two mild hypotheses. We establish a non-trivial upper bound for the correlation $\sum_{n \leq X}f(n)λ_ϕ(n+h)$ uniformly in $0<|h|\ll X$. As applications, we consider some special cases, including $λ_π(n), \,μ(n)λ_π(n)$ and any divisor-bounded multiplicative function. Here $λ_π(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Dirichlet coefficient of $\text{GL}_m$ automorphic $L$-function $L(s,π)$ for an automorphic irreducible cuspidal representation…
A reciprocity formula is established that expresses the fourth moment of automorphic L-functions of level q twisted by the ell-th Hecke eigenvalue as the fourth moment of automorphic L-functions of level ell twisted by the q-th Hecke eigenvalue. Direct corollaries include subconvexity bounds for L-functions in the level aspect and a short proof of an upper bound for the fifth moment of automorphic L-functions.
In this article, we determine the trace of some Hecke operators on the spaces of level one automorphic forms on the special orthogonal groups of the euclidean lattices $\mathrm{E}_7$, $\mathrm{E}_8$ and $\mathrm{E}_8\oplus \mathrm{A}_1$, with arbitrary weight. Using Arthur's theory, we deduce properties of the Satake parameters of the automorphic representations for the linear groups discovered by Chenevier and Renard. Our results corroborate a conjecture by Bergström, Faber and van der Geer about the Hasse-Weil zeta function on the moduli spaces of $17$-pointed curves of genus $3$.
In this article, we compute the Hecke operator $\mathrm{T}_2$, associated to the Kneser $2$-neighbours, defined on the isomorphic classes of even lattices of determinant 2, in dimension 23 and 25. In a previous article, we computed some properties of the Satake parameters of the automorphic representations for the linear groups discovered by Chenevier and Renard. Thanks to these results, we deduce the value of many other Hecke operators. This enables us to compute for every prime $p$ the Kneser graph associated to the $p$-neighbours of lattices in dimension 23 and 25. From our results, we impr…
Let $H$ be a semisimple algebraic group, $K$ a maximal compact subgroup of $G:=H(\mathbb{R})$, and $Γ\subset H(\mathbb{Q})$ a congruence arithmetic subgroup. In this paper, we generalize existing subconvex bounds for Hecke-Maass forms on the locally symmetric space $Γ\backslash G/K$ to corresponding bounds on the arithmetic quotient $Γ\backslash G$ for cocompact lattices using the spectral function of an elliptic operator. The bounds obtained extend known subconvex bounds for automorphic forms to non-trivial $K$-types, yielding subconvex bounds for new classes of automorphic representations, a…
Let $π$ be a non-self-dual unitary cuspidal automorphic representation of non-solvable polyhedral type for GL(2) over a number field. We show that $π$ has a positive upper Dirichlet density of Hecke eigenvalues in any sector whose angle is at least 2.63 radians.
We prove that sums of length about $q^{3/2}$ of Hecke eigenvalues of automorphic forms on $SL_3(\Zz)$ do not correlate with $q$-periodic functions with bounded Fourier transform. This generalizes the earlier results of Munshi and Holowinsky--Nelson, corresponding to multiplicative Dirichlet characters, and applies in particular to trace functions of small conductor modulo primes.
In this paper a theory of Hecke operators for higher order modular forms is established. The definition of cusp forms and attached L-functions is extended beyond the realm of parabolic invariants. The role of representation theoretic methods is clarified and, motivated by higher order forms, new convolution products of L-functions are introduced.
We prove upper bounds for Hecke-Laplace eigenfunctions on certain Riemannian manifolds of arithmetic type. The manifolds under consideration are d-fold products of 2-spheres or 3-spheres, realized as adelic quotients of quaternion algebras over totally real number fields.
We establish a one-to-one correspondence between conjugacy classes of any Hecke group and irreducible systems of poles of rational period functions for automorphic integrals on the same group. We use this correspondence to construct irreducible systems of poles and to count poles. We characterize Hecke-conjugation and Hecke-symmetry for poles of rational period functions in terms of the transpose of matrices in conjugacy classes. We construct new rational period functions and families of rational period functions.
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation for GL(2)/$\mathbb{Q}$ that is self-dual. In this Note we show that there exists a positive upper Dirichlet density of primes at which the associated Hecke eigenvalues of $π$ are larger than a specified positive constant.
We extend Holowinsky and Soundararajan's proof of quantum unique ergodicity for holomorphic Hecke modular forms on SL(2,Z), by establishing it for automorphic forms of cohomological type on GL_2 over an arbitrary number field which satisfy the Ramanujan bounds. In particular, we have uncondtional theorems over totally real and imaginary quadratic fields. In the totally real case we show that our result implies the equidistribution of the zero divisors of holomorphic Hecke modular forms, generalising a result of Rudnick over Q.
We sharpen some estimates of Rankin on power sums of Hecke eigenvalues, by using Kim & Shahidi's recent results on higher order symmetric powers. As an application, we improve Kohnen, Lau & Shparlinski's lower bound for the number of Hecke eigenvalues of same signs.
Let $f$ be a normalized Hecke-Maass cusp form of weight zero for the group $SL_2(\mathbb Z)$. This article presents several quantitative results about the distribution of Hecke eigenvalues of $f$. Applications to the $Ω_{\pm}$-results for the Hecke eigenvalues of $f$ and its symmetric square sym$^2(f)$ are also given.
We show that Landau-Siegel zeros for Dirichlet $L$-functions do not exist or quantum unique ergodicity for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ Hecke-Maass newforms holds with an effective rate of convergence. This follows from a more general result: Landau-Siegel zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions repel the zeros of all other automorphic $L$-functions from the line $\mathrm{Re}(s)=1$.
We study Hecke algebras for pairs $({\mathfrak g},K)$ over arbitrary fields $E$ of characteristic $0$, define the Bernstein functor and give another definition of the Zuckerman functor over $E$. Building on this and the author's previous work on rational structures on automorphic representations, we show that hard duality remains valid over $E$ and apply this result to the study of rationality properties of Sun's cohomologically induced functionals. Our main application are period relations for the special values of standard $L$-functions of automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$ adm…
In this paper, we are interested in exploring the cancellation of Hecke eigenvalues twisted with an exponential sums whose amplitude is $\sqrt{n}$ at prime arguments.
In order to compute with $l$--adic sheaves or crystals on a line over $\mathbb{F} _q$ a low-technology alternative to the traditional computation with the Hecke operators on the automorphic side could be helpful. A program which has evolved over the years in our discussions with M. Kontsevich centers around the concept that, in the geometric case, there must exist certain multiplication laws on the Galois--representation side that could be thought of as precursors of the automorphic lifts: non-abelian Abel's theorems, and their restrictions to diagonal, Clausen identities. To a varying extent,…
We consider modular functions (i.e., the Eisenstein series and Hecke-Maass forms) for the group PSL(2,Z). We fix a quadratic number field E. This gives rise to twisted (by a Hecke character of the field E) periods of a modular function along the torus corresponding to E. We prove meromorphic continuation for a Dirichlet series generated by these twisted periods.
Let $π$ be a Hecke--Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$ with normalized Hecke eigenvalues $λ_π(n,r)$. Let $f$ be a holomorphic or Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with normalized Hecke eigenvalues $λ_f(n)$. In this paper, we are concerned with obtaining nontrivial estimates for the sum \begin{equation*} \sum_{r,n\geq 1}λ_π(n,r)λ_f(n)e\left(t\,φ(r^2n/N)\right)V\left(r^2n/N\right), \end{equation*} where $e(x)=e^{2πix}$, $V(x)\in \mathcal{C}_c^{\infty}(0,\infty)$, $t\geq 1$ is a large parameter and $φ(x)$ is some real-valued smooth function. As applications, we give an improved s…
We prove a result on the distribution of Hecke eigenvalues, $μ_F(p^r)$ (for $r=1,2$ or $3$) of a non Saito--Kurokawa lift $F$ of degree $2$. As a consequence, we obtain an Omega result for the Hecke eigenvalues for such an $F$, which is the best possible in terms of orders of magnitude.
We utilize effective algorithms for computing in the cohomology of a Shimura curve together with the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence to compute systems of Hecke eigenvalues associated to Hilbert modular forms over a totally real field.
Let $F$ and $G$ be Siegel cusp forms for $\Sp_4(\Z)$ and weights $k_1, k_2$ respectively. Also let $F$ and $G$ be Hecke eigenforms lying in distinct eigen spaces. Further suppose that neither $F$ nor $G$ is a Saito-Kurokawa lift. In this article, we study simultaneous arithmetic behaviour of Hecke eigenvalues of these Hecke eigenforms.
We evaluate the action of Hecke operators on Siegel Eisenstein series of arbitrary degree, level and character. For square-free level, we simultaneously diagonalise the space with respect to all the Hecke operators, computing the eigenvalues explicitly, and obtain a multiplicity-one result. For arbitrary level, we simultaneously diagonalise the space with respect to the Hecke operators attached to primes not dividing the level, again computing the eigenvalues explicitly.
We give the best possible lower bounds in order of magnitude for the number of positive and negative Hecke eigenvalues. This improves upon a recent work of Kohnen, Lau & Shparlinski. Also, we study an analogous problem for short intervals.
We evaluate the action of Hecke operators on Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2, square-free level and arbitrary character, without using knowledge of their Fourier coefficients. From this we construct a basis of simultaneous eigenforms for the full Hecke algebra, and we compute their eigenvalues. As well, we obtain Hecke relations among the Eisenstein series. Using these Hecke relations in the case that $\stufe$ is square-free and the character is trivial, we generate a basis for the space of Eisenstein series.
Given two Siegel eigenforms of different weights, we determine explicit sets of Hecke eigenvalues for the two forms that must be distinct. In degree two, and under some additional conditions, we determine explicit sets of Fourier coefficients of the two forms that must be distinct.
Let $S_2^*(q)$ be the set of primitive Hecke eigenforms of weight 2 and prime level $q$. For $p$ prime and $t\in \mathbb{R}$, we prove asymptotic formulas for the sums $$ \mathcal {A}(p^j,q,t)=\sum_{f\in S_2^*(q)} L\left(\frac{1}{2}+it,f\right)^2λ_f(p^j),\qquad j=1,2, $$ where $λ_f(p^j)$ is the $p^j$-th normalized Fourier coefficient of $f$ and $L(s,f)$ is the $L$-function associated to $f$.

A theorem of Gekeler compares the number of non-isomorphic automorphic representations associated with the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$ to a simpler function of $k$ and $N$, showing that the two are equal whenever $N$ is squarefree. We prove the converse of this theorem (with one small exception), thus providing a characterization of squarefree integers. We also establish a similar characterization of prime numbers in terms of the number of Hecke newforms of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$. It follows that a hypothetical fast algorithm for computing the number of such automorphic repre…
Let $ϕ$ be an $L^2$-normalized Hecke--Maaß cusp form for $\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}[i])$ on the locally symmetric space $X:=\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}[i])\backslash \mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{C}) / \mathrm{PU}_n$. If $Ω$ is a compact subset of $X$, then we prove the bound $\|ϕ|_Ω\|_{\infty}\ll_Ω λ_ϕ^{n(n-1)/4-δ}$ for some $δ>0$ depending only on $n$, where $λ_ϕ$ is the Laplace eigenvalue of $ϕ$.
For each prime $p$, we determine the distribution of the $p^{th}$ Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms of large weight for the full modular group. As $p\to\infty$, this distribution tends to the Sato--Tate distribution.
Let G be a torsion-free finite-index subgroup of SL(n,Z) or GL(n,Z), and let d be the cohomological dimension of G. We present an algorithm to compute the eigenvalues of the Hecke operators on the integral cohomology of degree d-1 for n = 2, 3, and 4. In addition, we describe a modification of the modular symbol algorithm of Ash-Rudolph for computing Hecke eigenvalues for the integral cohomology of degree d.
