A theorem of Gekeler compares the number of non-isomorphic automorphic representations associated with the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$ to a simpler function of $k$ and $N$, showing that the two are equal whenever $N$ is squarefree. We prove the converse of this theorem (with one small exception), thus providing a characterization of squarefree integers. We also establish a similar characterization of prime numbers in terms of the number of Hecke newforms of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$.
It follows that a hypothetical fast algorithm for computing the number of such automorphic representations for even a single weight $k$ would yield a fast test for whether $N$ is squarefree. We also show how to obtain bounds on the possible square divisors of a number $N$ that has been found to not be squarefree via this test, and we show how to probabilistically obtain the complete factorization of the squarefull part of $N$ from the number of such automorphic representations for two different weights. If in addition we have the number of such Hecke newforms for even a single weight $k$, then we show how to probabilistically factor $N$ entirely. All of these computations could be performed quickly in practice, given the number(s) of automorphic representations and modular forms as input.
In this paper, we prove that the arithmetic automorphic periods for $GL_{n}$ over a CM field factorize through the infinite places. This generalizes a conjecture of Shimura in 1983, and is predicted by the Langlands correspondence between automorphic representations and motives.
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of automorphic forms on the non-split norm one torus $T$ associated with an imaginary quadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, ordered by analytic conductor.
Michael HARRIS defined the arithmetic automorphic periods for certain cuspidal representations of $GL_{n}$ over quadratic imaginary fields in his Crelle paper 1997. He also showed that critical values of automorphic L-functions for $GL_{n}\times GL_{1}$ can be interpreted in terms of these arithmetic automorphic periods. In the thesis, we generalize his results in two ways. Firstly, the arithmetic automorphic periods have been defined over general CM fields. We also prove that these periods factorize as products of local periods over infinity places. Secondly, we show that critical values of a…
We find the number $s_k(p,Ω)$ of cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ with trivial central character such that the archimedean component is a holomorphic discrete series representation of weight $k\ge 3$, and the non-archimedean component at $p$ is an Iwahori-spherical representation of type $Ω$ and unramified otherwise. Using the automorphic Plancherel density theorem, we show how a limit version of our formula for $s_k(p,Ω)$ generalizes to the vector-valued case and a finite number of ramified places.
For Kleinian groups acting on hyperbolic three-space, we prove factorization formulas for both the Selberg zeta-function and the automorphic scattering matrix. We extend results of Venkov and Zograf from Fuchsian groups, to Kleinian groups, and we give a proof that is simple and extendable to more general groups.
Counting integral binary quadratic forms with certain restrictions is a classical problem. In this paper, we count binary quadratic forms of fixed discriminant given restrictions on the size of their coefficients. We accomplish this by investigating the analytic properties of a certain double Dirichlet series, which is a shifted convolution sum of certain classical automorphic forms.
The present paper is devoted to the relations between Deligne's conjecture on critical values of motivic $L$-functions and the multiplicative relations between periods of arithmetically normalized automorphic forms on unitary groups. In the first place, we combine the Ichino--Ikeda--Neal-Harris (IINH) formula -- which is now a theorem -- with an analysis of cup products of coherent cohomological automorphic forms on Shimura varieties to establish relations between certain automorphic periods and critical values of Rankin-Selberg and Asai $L$-functions of ${\rm GL}(n)\times{\rm GL}(m)$ over CM …
We aim at studying automorphic forms of bounded analytic conductor in the division quaternion algebra setting. We prove the equidistribution of the universal family with respect to an explicit and geometrically meaningful measure. It leads to answering the Sato-Tate conjectures in this case, and contains the counting law of the universal family, with a power savings error term in the totally definite case.
For a compact Riemannian manifold, Weyl's law describes the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of the eigenvalues of the associated Laplace operator. In this paper we discuss Weyl's law in the context of automorphic forms. The underlying manifolds are locally symmetric spaces of finite volume. In the non-compact case Weyl's law is closely related to the problem of existence of cusp forms.
We consider the simplest quartic number fields $\mathbb{K}_m$ defined by the irreducible quartic polynomials $$x^4-mx^3-6x^2+mx+1,$$ where $m$ runs over the positive rational integers such that the odd part of $m^2+16$ is squarefree. In this paper, we study the common index divisor $I(\mathbb K_m)$ and determine explicitly the prime ideal decomposition for any prime number in any simplest quartic number fields $\mathbb{K}_m$. On the other hand, we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of simplest quartic fields with discriminant $\leq x$ and given index.
In this note we describe a new method of counting the number of unordered factorizations of a natural number by means of a generating function and a recurrence relation arising from it, which improves an earlier result in this direction.
In this paper we address two different problems related with the factorization of an RSA module N. First we can show that factoring is equivalent in deterministic polynomial time to counting points on a pair of twisted Elliptic curves modulo N. Also we settle the malleability of factoring an RSA module, as described in [9], using the number of points of a single elliptic curve modulo N, and Coppersmith's algorithm.
This article concerns the study of a new invariant bilinear form $\mathcal B$ on the space of automorphic forms of a split reductive group $G$ over a function field. We define $\mathcal B$ using the asymptotics maps from Bezrukavnikov-Kazhdan and Sakellaridis-Venkatesh, which involve the geometry of the wonderful compactification of $G$. We show that $\mathcal B$ is naturally related to miraculous duality in the geometric Langlands program through the functions-sheaves dictionary. In the proof, we highlight the connection between the classical non-Archimedean Gindikin-Karpelevich formula and c…
We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points of bounded height in the zero-loci of Brauer group elements on semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. We obtain asymptotic formulae for the counting problem for wonderful compactifications using the spectral theory of automorphic forms. Applications include asymptotic formulae for the number of matrices over Q whose determinant is a sum of two squares. These results provide a positive answer to some cases of a question of Serre concerning such counting problems.
Consider a polynomial vector field $ξ$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with algebraic coefficients, and $K$ a compact piece of a trajectory. Let $N(K,d)$ denote the maximal number of isolated intersections between $K$ and an algebraic hypersurface of degree $d$. We introduce a condition on $ξ$ called \emph{constructible orbits} and show that under this condition $N(K,d)$ grows polynomially with $d$. We establish the constructible orbits condition for linear differential equations over $\mathbb{C}(t)$, for planar polynomial differential equations and for some differential equations related to the automorphic…
In this paper, we study the arithmetics of skew polynomial rings over finite fields, mostly from an algorithmic point of view. We give various algorithms for fast multiplication, division and extended Euclidean division. We give a precise description of quotients of skew polynomial rings by a left principal ideal, using results relating skew polynomial rings to Azumaya algebras. We use this description to give a new factorization algorithm for skew polynomials, and to give other algorithms related to factorizations of skew polynomials, like counting the number of factorizations as a product of…

In the present paper we provide a probabilistic polynomial time algorithm that reduces the complete factorization of any squarefree integer $n$ to counting points on elliptic curves modulo $n$, succeeding with probability $1-\varepsilon$, for any $\varepsilon<0$ .
A classic question in analytic number theory is to find asymptotics for $σ_{k}(x)$ and $π_{k}(x)$, the number of integers $n\leq x$ with exactly $k$ prime factors, where $π_{k}(x)$ has the added constraint that all the factors are distinct. This problem was originally resolved by Landau in 1900, and much work was subsequently done where $k$ is allowed to vary. In this paper we look at a similar question about integers with a specific prime factorization. Given $\boldsymbolα\in\mathbb{N}^{k}$, $\boldsymbolα=(α_{1},α_{2},...,α_{k})$ let $σ_{\boldsymbolα}(x)$ denote the number of integers of the …
Let $p_{1}<p_2<... <p_ν<...$ be the sequence of prime numbers and let $m$ be a positive integer. We give a strong asymptotic formula for the distribution of the set of integers having prime factorizations of the form $p_{m^{k_1}}p_{m^{k_{2}}...p_{m^{k_{n}}}$ with $k_{1}\le k_{2}\le...\le k_{n}$. Such integers originate in various combinatorial counting problems; when $m=2$, they arise as Matula numbers of certain rooted trees.
We prove a higher dimensional generalization of Gross and Zagier's theorem on the factorization of differences of singular moduli. Their result is proved by giving a counting formula for the number of isomorphisms between elliptic curves with complex multiplication by two different imaginary quadratic fields $K$ and $K^\prime$, when the curves are reduced modulo a supersingular prime and its powers. Equivalently, the Gross-Zagier formula counts optimal embeddings of the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field into particular maximal orders in $B_{p, \infty}$, the definite quaternion a…

Schoof's classic algorithm allows point-counting for elliptic curves over finite fields in polynomial time. This algorithm was subsequently improved by Atkin, using factorizations of modular polynomials, and by Elkies, using a theory of explicit isogenies. Moving to Jacobians of genus-2 curves, the current state of the art for point counting is a generalization of Schoof's algorithm. While we are currently missing the tools we need to generalize Elkies' methods to genus 2, recently Martindale and Milio have computed analogues of modular polynomials for genus-2 curves whose Jacobians have real …
The goal of these lectures is to present an informal but precise introduction to a body of concepts and methods of interest in number theory and string theory revolving around modular forms and their generalizations. Modular invariance lies at the heart of conformal field theory, string perturbation theory, Montonen-Olive duality, Seiberg-Witten theory, and S-duality in Type IIB superstring theory. Automorphic forms with respect to higher arithmetic groups as well as mock modular forms enter in toroidal string compactifications and the counting of black hole microstates. After introducing the …
