Quaternionic automorphic representations are one attempt to generalize to other groups the special place holomorphic modular forms have among automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2$. Here, we use "hyperendoscopy" techniques to develop a general trace formula and understand them on an arbitrary group. Then we specialize this general formula to study quaternionic automorphic representations on the exceptional group $G_2$, eventually getting an analog of the Eichler-Selberg trace formula for classical modular forms. We finally use this together with some techniques of Chenevier, Renard, and Taïbi to compute dimensions of spaces of level-$1$ quaternionic representations. On the way, we prove a Jacquet-Langlands-style result describing them in terms of classical modular forms and automorphic representations on the compact-at-infinity form $G_2^c$. The main technical difficulty is that the quaternionic discrete series that quaternionic automorphic representations are defined in terms of do not satisfy a condition of being "regular". A real representation theory argument shows that regularity miraculously does not matter for specifically the case of quaternionic discrete series. We hope that the techniques and shortcuts highlighted in this project are of interest in other computations about discrete-at-infinity automorphic representations on arbitrary reductive groups instead of just classical ones.
In order to compute with $l$--adic sheaves or crystals on a line over $\mathbb{F} _q$ a low-technology alternative to the traditional computation with the Hecke operators on the automorphic side could be helpful. A program which has evolved over the years in our discussions with M. Kontsevich centers around the concept that, in the geometric case, there must exist certain multiplication laws on the Galois--representation side that could be thought of as precursors of the automorphic lifts: non-abelian Abel's theorems, and their restrictions to diagonal, Clausen identities. To a varying extent,…
We show that the quaternionic discrete series on G=Sp(1,1) with minimal K-type of dimension n+1 can be realized inside the space of Fueter-regular functions on the quaternionic ball B in H, with values in H^n. We then consider the corresponding $H^n$-valued Fueter-regular automorphic forms on G. For a fixed level $Γ$, we construct a non-trivial map from the space of pairs of such automorphic forms, to closed $M_n(H)$-valued differential $3$-forms on $B$, which transform under $Γ$ according to a cocycle condition.
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of automorphic forms on the non-split norm one torus $T$ associated with an imaginary quadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, ordered by analytic conductor.
We develop the relationship between quaternionic hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens counting formula for the rational points over a definite quaternion algebra $A$ over $\mathbb Q$ in the light cone of quaternionic Hermitian forms, as well as a Neville equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $A$ in quaternionic Heisenberg groups.
Suppose that $G$ is a simple reductive group over $\mathbf{Q}$, with an exceptional Dynkin type, and with $G(\mathbf{R})$ quaternionic (in the sense of Gross-Wallach). In a previous paper, we gave an explicit form of the Fourier expansion of modular forms on $G$ along the unipotent radical of the Heisenberg parabolic. In this paper, we give the Fourier expansion of the minimal modular form $θ_{Gan}$ on quaternionic $E_8$, and some applications. The $Sym^{8}(V_2)$-valued automorphic function $θ_{Gan}$ is a weight four, level one modular form on $E_8$, which has been studied by Gan. The applicat…
We describe an algorithm for computing certain quaternionic quotients of the Bruhat-Tits tree for GL2(Qp). As an application, we describe an algorithm to obtain (conjectural) equations for the canonical embedding of Shimura curves.
We find the number $s_k(p,Ω)$ of cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ with trivial central character such that the archimedean component is a holomorphic discrete series representation of weight $k\ge 3$, and the non-archimedean component at $p$ is an Iwahori-spherical representation of type $Ω$ and unramified otherwise. Using the automorphic Plancherel density theorem, we show how a limit version of our formula for $s_k(p,Ω)$ generalizes to the vector-valued case and a finite number of ramified places.
Let F be a totally real number field. Using a recent geometric approach developed by Andreatta and Iovita we construct several variables p-adic families of finite slope quaternionic automorphic forms over F. It is achieved by interpolating the modular sheaves defined over some auxiliary unitary Shimura curves. Secondly, we attach p-adic L-functions to triples of ordinary p-adic families of quaternionic automorphic eigenforms. This is done by relating trilinear periods to some trilinear products over unitary Shimura curves which can be interpolated adapting the work of Liu-Zhang-Zhang to our fa…
For a totally real number field $F$ and a nonarchimedean prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ lying above a prime number $p$ we introduce certain sheaf cohomology groups that intertwine the $\mathfrak{p}^{\infty}$-tower of a quaternionic Hilbert modular variety associated to a quaternion algebra $D$ over $F$ that is split at $\mathfrak{p}$ and a $p$-adically admissible representation of $\mbox{PGL}_2(F_{\mathfrak{p}})$. Applied to infinitesimal $p$-adic deformations of the local factor at $\mathfrak{p}$ of a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $D^*(\mathbb{A})$ this yields a natural construction…
In this paper, we study modular forms on two simply connected groups of type $D_4$ over ${\mathbb Q}$. One group, $G_s$ is a globally split group of type $D_4$, viewed as the group of isotopies of the split rational octonions. The other, $G_c$, is the isotopy group of the rational (non-split) octonions. We study automorphic forms on $G_s$, in analogy to the work of Gross, Gan, and Savin on $G_2$; namely we study automorphic forms whose component at infinity corresponds to a quaternionic discrete series representation. We study automorphic forms on $G_c$ using Gross's formalism of ``algebraic m…
A theorem of Gekeler compares the number of non-isomorphic automorphic representations associated with the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$ to a simpler function of $k$ and $N$, showing that the two are equal whenever $N$ is squarefree. We prove the converse of this theorem (with one small exception), thus providing a characterization of squarefree integers. We also establish a similar characterization of prime numbers in terms of the number of Hecke newforms of weight $k$ on $Γ_0(N)$. It follows that a hypothetical fast algorithm for computing the number of such automorphic repre…

We investigate modular embeddings for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. First we prove some purely algebro-geometric or even topological criteria for a regular map from a smooth complex curve to a quaternionic Shimura variety to be covered by a modular embedding. Then we set up an adelic formalism for modular embeddings and apply our criteria to study the effect of abstract field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ on modular embeddings. Finally we derive that the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ operates on the dessins d'enfants defined by principal congruence subgroups of (arithmetic or non-ar…
For a compact Riemannian manifold, Weyl's law describes the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of the eigenvalues of the associated Laplace operator. In this paper we discuss Weyl's law in the context of automorphic forms. The underlying manifolds are locally symmetric spaces of finite volume. In the non-compact case Weyl's law is closely related to the problem of existence of cusp forms.
Counting integral binary quadratic forms with certain restrictions is a classical problem. In this paper, we count binary quadratic forms of fixed discriminant given restrictions on the size of their coefficients. We accomplish this by investigating the analytic properties of a certain double Dirichlet series, which is a shifted convolution sum of certain classical automorphic forms.
We aim at studying automorphic forms of bounded analytic conductor in the division quaternion algebra setting. We prove the equidistribution of the universal family with respect to an explicit and geometrically meaningful measure. It leads to answering the Sato-Tate conjectures in this case, and contains the counting law of the universal family, with a power savings error term in the totally definite case.
In this article we prove several level lowering results for cuspidal automorphic representations occurring in the cohomology of the Siegel modular threefold with paramodular level structure by adapting a method of Ribet in his proof of the Serre's epsilon conjecture. The proof is purely geometric and relies on the description of the supersingular locus of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety and an arithmetic level raising result on this Shimura variety. The heart of the proof is a comparison of the dimension of the space of vanishing cycles on the paramodular Siegel modular threefold …
We give a new and representation theoretic construction of $p$-adic interpolation series for central values of self-dual Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\operatorname{GL}_2$ in dihedral towers of CM fields, using expressions of these central values as automorphic periods. The main novelty of this construction, apart from the level of generality in which it works, is that it is completely local. We give the construction here for a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\operatorname{GL}_2$ over a totally real field corresponding to a $\mathfrak{p}$-ordinary Hilbert modular forms of parallel …
We consider certain families of automorphic representations over number fields arising from the principle of functoriality of Langlands. Let $G$ be a reductive group over a number field $F$ which admits discrete series representations at infinity. Let $^{L}G=\hat G \rtimes \mathrm{Gal}(\bar F/F)$ be the associated $L$-group and $r:{}^L G\to \mathrm{GL}(d,\mathbb{C})$ a continuous homomorphism which is irreducible and does not factor through $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar F/F)$. The families under consideration consist of discrete automorphic representations of $G(\mathbb{A}_F)$ of given weight and level a…
We provide a construction of local and automorphic non-tempered Arthur packets of the group SO(3,2) and its inner form SO(4,1) associated with a certain Arthur's parameter and prove a multiplicity formula. We further study the restriction of the representations in these packets to the subgroup SO(3,1). In particular, we discover that the local Gross-Prasad conjecture, formulated for generic L-packets, does not generalize naively to a non-generic A-packet. We also study the non-vanishing of the automorphic SO(3,1)-period on the group SO(4,1) x SO(3,1) and SO(3,2) x SO(3,1) for the representatio…
We show that the completed Hecke algebra of $p$-adic modular forms is isomorphic to the completed Hecke algebra of continuous $p$-adic automorphic forms for the units of the quaternion algebra ramified at $p$ and $\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Serre in a 1987 letter to Tate. The proof is geometric, and lifts a mod $p$ argument due to Serre: we evaluate modular forms by identifying a quaternionic double-coset with a fiber of the Hodge-Tate period map, and extend functions off of the double-coset using fake Hasse invariants. In particular, this gives a new proo…
We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points of bounded height in the zero-loci of Brauer group elements on semi-simple algebraic groups over number fields. We obtain asymptotic formulae for the counting problem for wonderful compactifications using the spectral theory of automorphic forms. Applications include asymptotic formulae for the number of matrices over Q whose determinant is a sum of two squares. These results provide a positive answer to some cases of a question of Serre concerning such counting problems.

The goal of these lectures is to present an informal but precise introduction to a body of concepts and methods of interest in number theory and string theory revolving around modular forms and their generalizations. Modular invariance lies at the heart of conformal field theory, string perturbation theory, Montonen-Olive duality, Seiberg-Witten theory, and S-duality in Type IIB superstring theory. Automorphic forms with respect to higher arithmetic groups as well as mock modular forms enter in toroidal string compactifications and the counting of black hole microstates. After introducing the …
