In 1974, D. Rolfsen asked: If two PL links in $S^3$ are isotopic (=homotopic through embeddings), then are they PL isotopic? We prove that they are PL isotopic to another pair of links which are indistinguishable from each other by finite type invariants. Thus if finite type invariants separate PL links in $S^3$, then Rolfsen's problem has an affirmative solution. In fact, we show that finite type invariants separate PL links in $S^3$ if and only if Rolfsen's problem has an affirmative solution and certain 5 other (rather diverse) conjectures hold simultaneously.
We also show that if $v$ is a finite type invariant (or more generally a colored finite type invariant) of PL links, and $v$ is invariant under PL isotopy, then $v$ assumes the same value on all sufficiently close $C^0$-approximations of any given topological link; moreover, the extension of $v$ by continuity to topological links is an invariant of isotopy. Some specific invariants of this kind are discussed.
This paper introduces two virtual knot theory ``analogues'' of a well-known family of invariants for knots in thickened surfaces: the Grishanov-Vassiliev finite-type invariants of order two. The first, called the three loop isotopy invariant, is an invariant of virtual knots while the second, called the three loop framed isotopy invariant, is a regular isotopy invariant of framed virtual knots. The properties of these invariants are investigated at length. In addition, we make precise the informal notion of ``analogue''. Using this formal definition, it is proved that a generalized three loop …
It has long been known that a Milnor invariant with no repeated index is an invariant of link homotopy. We show that Milnor's invariants with repeated indices are invariants not only of isotopy, but also of self C_k-moves. A self C_k-move is a natural generalization of link homotopy based on certain degree k clasper surgeries, which provides a filtration of link homotopy classes.
We construct a link in the $3$-space that is not isotopic to any PL link (non-ambiently). In fact, there exist uncountably many $I$-equivalence classes of links. The paper also includes some observations on Cochran's invariants $β_i$.
In this paper we define and study flexible links and flexible isotopy in projective space. Flexible links are meant to capture the topological properties of real algebraic links. We classify all flexible links up to flexible isotopy using Ekholms interpretation of Viros encomplexed writhe.
Pseudodiagrams are knot or link diagrams where some of the crossing information is missing. Pseudoknots are equivalence classes of pseudodiagrams, where equivalence is generated by a natural set of Reidemeister moves. In this paper, we introduce a Gauss-diagrammatic theory for pseudoknots which gives rise to the notion of a virtual pseudoknot. We provide new, easily computable isotopy and homotopy invariants for classical and virtual pseudodiagrams. We also give tables of unknotting numbers for homotopically trivial pseudoknots and homotopy classes of homotopically nontrivial pseudoknots. Sinc…
It is well-known that no knot can be cancelled in a connected sum with another knot, whereas every link can be cancelled up to link homotopy in a (componentwise) connected sum with another link. In this paper we address the question whether the noncancellation property of knots holds for some (piecewise-linear) links up to some stronger analogue of link homotopy, which still does not distinguish between sufficiently close C^0-approximations of a topological link. We introduce a sequence of such increasingly stronger equivalence relations under the name of k-quasi-isotopy, k=1,2,...; all of the…
David Gabai recently proved a smooth 4-dimensional "Light Bulb Theorem" in the absence of 2-torsion in the fundamental group. We extend his result to 4-manifolds with arbitrary fundamental group by showing that an invariant of Mike Freedman and Frank Quinn gives the complete obstruction to "homotopy implies isotopy" for embedded 2-spheres which have a common geometric dual. The invariant takes values in an Z/2Z-vector space generated by elements of order 2 in the fundamental group and has applications to unknotting numbers and pseudo-isotopy classes of self-diffeomorphisms. Our methods also gi…
In this paper we will show that two surfaces of the same genus and homology class in a simply connected 4-manifold are concordant. We will show they are often topologically isotopic when their complements have cyclic fundamental group. Finally, we will show that if they are 0-concordant, then surgery on one is equivalent to surgery on the other.
For an $n$-component link $L$, the Milnor's isotopy invariant is defined for each multi-index $I=i_1i_2...i_m (i_j\in\n)$. Here $m$ is called the length. Let $r(I)$ denote the maximam number of times that any index appears. It is known that Milnor invariants with $r=1$ are link-homotopy invariant. N. Habegger and X. S. Lin showed that two string links are a link-homotopc if and only if their Milnor invariants with $r=1$ coincide. This gives us that a link in $S^3$ is link-homotopic to a trivial link if and only if the all Milnor invariants of the link with $r=1$ vanish. Although Milnor invaria…
We define new Hamiltonian isotopy invariants for a monotone Lagrangian torus embedded in a symplectic 4-manifold. We show that, in the standard symplectic 4-space, these invariants distinguish a monotone Clifford torus from a Chekanov torus.
This paper has been withdrawn because there is a fundamental error in the computations; with the right computational scheme it seems to be just a version of the Jones polynomial
Geometric aspects of the filtration on classical links by k-quasi-isotopy are discussed, including the effect of Whitehead doubling, relations with Smythe's n-splitting and Kobayashi's k-contractibility. One observation is: ω-quasi-isotopy is equivalent to PL isotopy for links in a homotopy 3-sphere (resp. contractible open 3-manifold) M if and only if M is homeomorphic to S^3 (resp. R^3). As a byproduct of the proof of the "if" part, we obtain that every compact subset of an acyclic open set in a compact orientable 3-manifold M is contained in a PL homology 3-ball in M. We show that k-quasi-i…
In part I it was shown that for each k>0 the generalized Sato-Levine invariant detects a gap between k-quasi-isotopy of link and peripheral structure preserving isomorphism of the finest quotient G_k of its fundamental group, `functorially' invariant under k-quasi-isotopy. Here we show that Cochran's derived invariant β^k, provided k>2, and a series of \barμ-invariants, starting with \barμ(111112122) for k=3, also fall in this gap. In fact, all \barμ-invariants where each index occurs at most k+1 times, except perhaps for one occuring k+2 times, can be extracted from G_k, and if they vanish, G…
The space of n-sided polygons embedded in three-space consists of a smooth manifold in which points correspond to piecewise linear or ``geometric'' knots, while paths correspond to isotopies which preserve the geometric structure of these knots. The topology of these spaces for the case n = 6 and n = 7 is described. In both of these cases, each knot space consists of five components, but contains only three (when n = 6) or four (when n = 7) topological knot types. Therefore ``geometric knot equivalence'' is strictly stronger than topological equivalence. This point is demonstrated by the hexag…
Let $ϕ: S^1\times D^2\to S^1$ be the natural projection. An oriented knot $K\hookrightarrow V = S^1\times D^2$ is called an almost closed braid if the restriction of $ϕ$ to K has exactly two (non-degenerate) critical points (and K is a closed braid if the restriction of $ϕ$ has no critical points at all). We introduce new isotopy invariants for closed braids and almost closed braids in the solid torus V. These invariants refine finite type invariants. They are still calculable with polynomial complexity with respect to the number of crossings of K. Let the solid torus V be standardly embedded …
We discuss the properties of a certain type of Dehn surgery along a Lagrangian torus in a symplectic 4-manifold, known as Luttinger's surgery, and use this construction to provide a purely topological interpretation of a non-isotopy result for symplectic plane curves with cusp and node singularities due to Moishezon.
Techniques of gauge theory are used to define and compute an invariant of certain diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds. The invariant vanishes for any diffeomorphism which is smoothly isotopic to the identity. As an application, we give the first example of a diffeomorphism of a simply-connected 4-manifold which is homotopic to the identity map, but not smoothly isotopic to the identity.

This paper contains the first knot polynomials which can distinguish the orientations of classical knots and which make no excplicit use of the knot group. But they make extensive use of the meridian and of the longitude in a geometric way. Let $M$ be the topological moduli space of long knots up to regular isotopy, and for any natural number $n > 1$ let $M_n$ be the moduli space of all n-cables $nK$ of framed long knots $K$ which are twisted by a given string link $T$ to close to a knot in the solid torus, with a marked point on the knot at infinity. First we construct integer valued combinat…
Physical knots and links are one-dimensional submanifolds of R^3 with fixed length and thickness. We show that isotopy classes in this category can differ from those of classical knot and link theory. In particular we exhibit a Gordian Split Link, a two component link that is split in the classical theory but cannot be split with a physical isotopy.
An approach by J.Wu describes homotopy groups $π_{n}(S^2)$ of the standard 2-sphere as isotopy classes of spherical $n+1$--strand Brunnian braids is investigated in the case $n=3$ for applications.
We construct infinite families of topologically isotopic but smoothly distinct knotted spheres in many simply connected 4-manifolds that become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with $S^2 \times S^2$, and as a consequence, analogous families of diffeomorphisms and metrics of positive scalar curvature for such 4-manifolds. We also construct families of smoothly distinct links, all of whose corresponding proper sublinks are smoothly isotopic, that become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing.
We find a geometric invariant of isotopy classes of strongly irreducible Heegaard splittings of toroidal 3-manifolds. Combining this invariant with a theorem of R Weidmann, proved here in the appendix, we show that a closed, totally orientable Seifert fibered space M has infinitely many isotopy classes of Heegaard splittings of the same genus if and only if M has an irreducible, horizontal Heegaard splitting, has a base orbifold of positive genus, and is not a circle bundle. This characterizes precisely which Seifert fibered spaces satisfy the converse of Waldhausen's conjecture.
Khovanov and Rozansky's categorification of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial is invariant under braidlike isotopies for any link diagram and Markov moves for braid closures. To define HOMFLY-PT homology, they required a link to be presented as a braid closure, because they did not prove invariance under the other oriented Reidemeister moves. In this text we prove that the Reidemeister IIb move fails in HOMFLY-PT homology by using virtual crossing filtrations of the author and Rozansky. The decategorification of HOMFLY-PT homology for general link diagrams gives a deformed version of the HOMFLY-PT poly…
For Gamma a finite, connected metric graph, we consider the space of configurations of n points in Gamma with a restraint parameter r dictating the minimum distance allowed between each pair of points. These restricted configuration spaces come up naturally in topological robotics. In this paper, we study the homotopy, homeomorphism, and isotopy types of these spaces over the space of parameters r and provide a polynomial upper bound (in the number of edges of Gamma) for the number of isotopy types.
We define an isotopy invariant of embeddings N -> R^m of manifolds into Euclidean space. This invariant together with the α-invariant of Haefliger-Wu is complete in the dimension range where the α-invariant could be incomplete. We also define parametric connected sum of certain embeddings (analogous to surgery). This allows to obtain new completeness results for the α-invariant and the following estimation of isotopy classes of embeddings. For the piecewise-linear category, a (3n-2m+2)-connected n-manifold N and (4n+4)/3 < m < (3n+3)/2 each preimage of α-invariant injects into a quotient of H_…
For a classical link, Milnor defined a family of isotopy invariants, called Milnor $\overlineμ$-invariants. Recently, Chrisman extended Milnor $\overlineμ$-invariants to welded links by a topological approach. The aim of this paper is to show that Milnor $\overlineμ$-invariants can be extended to welded links by a combinatorial approach. The proof contains an alternative proof for the invariance of the original $\overlineμ$-invariants of classical links.
We provide combinatorial realizations, according to the usual objects/moves scheme, of the following three topological categories: (1) pairs (M,v) where M is a 3-manifold (up to diffeomorphism) and v is a (non-singular vector) field, up to homotopy; here possibly the boundary of M is non-empty and v may be tangent to the boundary, but only in a concave fashion, and homotopy should preserve tangency type; (2) framed links L in M, up to framed isotopy; (3) triples (M,v,L), with (M,v) as above and L transversal to v, up to pseudo-Legendrian isotopy (transversality-preserving simultaneous homotopy…
We define $A_k$-moves for embeddings of a finite graph into the 3-sphere for each natural number $k$. Let $A_k$-equivalence denote an equivalence relation generated by $A_k$-moves and ambient isotopy. $A_k$-equivalence implies $A_{k-1}$-equivalence. Let ${\cal F}$ be an $A_{k-1}$-equivalence class of the embeddings of a finite graph into the 3-sphere. Let ${\cal G}$ be the quotient set of ${\cal F}$ under $A_k$-equivalence. We show that the set ${\cal G}$ forms an abelian group under a certain geometric operation. We define finite type invariants on ${\cal F}$ of order $(n;k)$. And we show tha…
Knot theory is the study of isotopy classes of embeddings of the circle $S^1$ into a 3-manifold, specifically $R^3$. The Fáry-Milnor Theorem says that any curve in $R^3$ of total curvature less than $4π$ is unknotted. More generally, a (finite) graph consists of a finite number of edges and vertices. Given a topological type of graphs $Γ$, what limitations on the isotopy class of $Γ$ are implied by a bound on total curvature? What does ``total curvature" mean for a graph? We define a natural notion of net total curvature of a graph $Γ$ in $R^3$, and prove that if $Γ$ is homeomorphic to the $θ$…
The discovery of polynomial invariants of knots and links, ignited by V. F. R. Jones, leads to the formulation of polynomial invariants of spatial graphs. The Yamada polynomial, one of such invariants, is frequently utilized for practical distinguishment of spatial graphs. Especially for $θ$-curves, the polynomial is an ambient isotopy invariant after a normalization. On the other hand, to each $θ$-curve, a 3-component link can be associated as an ambient isotopy invariant. The benefit of associated links is that invariants of links can be utilized as invariants of $θ$-curves. In this paper we…
Contact homology for Legendrian submanifolds in standard contact $(2n+1)$-space is rigorously defined using moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with Lagrangian boundary conditions in complex $n$-space. It provides new invariants of Legendrian isotopy. Using these invariants the theory of Legendrian isotopy is shown to be very rich. For example, infinite families of pairwise non-isotopic Legendrian $n$-spheres and $n$-tori, which are indistinguishable by means of previously known invariants, are constructed. In a sense, the definition of contact homology presented in this paper is a high dimensi…
Symplectic Khovanov homology is an invariant of oriented links defined by Seidel and Smith and conjectured to be isomorphic to Khovanov homology. I define morphisms (up to a global sign ambiguity) between symplectic Khovanov homology groups, corresponding to isotopy classes of smooth link cobordisms in 4D between a fixed pair of links. These morphisms define a functor from the category of links and such cobordisms to the category of abelian groups and group homomorphisms up to a sign ambiguity. This provides an extra structure for symplectic Khovanov homology and more generally an isotopy inva…
A braid-like isotopy for links in 3-space is an isotopy which uses only those Reidemeister moves which occur in isotopies of braids. We define a refined Jones polynomial and its corresponding Khovanov homology which are, in general, only invariant under braid-like isotopies.
Using a combinatorial argument, we prove the well-known result that the Wirtinger and Dehn presentations of a link in 3-space describe isomorphic groups. The result is not true for links $\ell$ in a thickened surface $S \times [0,1]$. Their precise relationship, as given in the 2012 thesis of R.E. Byrd, is established here by an elementary argument. When a diagram in $S$ for $\ell$ can be checkerboard shaded, the Dehn presentation leads naturally to an abelian "Dehn coloring group," an isotopy invariant of $\ell$. Introducing homological information from $S$ produces a stronger invariant, $\ca…
We construct an enhanced version of knot contact homology, and show that we can deduce from it the group ring of the knot group together with the peripheral subgroup. In particular, it completely determines a knot up to smooth isotopy. The enhancement consists of the (fully noncommutative) Legendrian contact homology associated to the union of the conormal torus of the knot and a disjoint cotangent fiber sphere, along with a product on a filtered part of this homology. As a corollary, we obtain a new, holomorphic-curve proof of a result of the third author that the Legendrian isotopy class of …
We introduce a special class of knots, called global knots, in F^2 x R and we construct new isotopy invariants, called T-invariants, for global knots. Some T-invariants are of finite type but they cannot be extracted from the generalized Kontsevitch integral (which is consequently not the universal invariant of finite type for the restricted class of global knots). We prove that T-invariants separate all global knots of a certain type. As a corollary, we prove the non-invertibility of some links in S^3 without making any use of the link group.
We develop a new approach to the classical problem on isotopy classification of embeddings of manifolds into Euclidean spaces. This approach involves studying of a new embedding invariant, of almost-embeddings and of smoothing, as well as explicit constructions of embeddings. Using this approach we obtain complete concrete classification results below the metastable dimension range, i.e. where the configuration spaces invariant of Haefliger-Wu is incomplete. Note that all known complete concrete classification results, except for the Haefliger classification of links and smooth knots, can be o…
It is known that every surface-link can be presented by a marked graph diagram, and such a diagram presentation is unique up to moves called Yoshikawa moves. G. Kuperberg introduced a regular isotopy invariant, called the quantum A_2 invariant, for tangled trivalent graph diagrams. In this paper, a polynomial for a marked graph diagram is defined by use of the quantum A_2 invariant and it is studied how the polynomial changes under Yoshikawa moves. The notion of a ribbon marked graph is introduced to show that this polynomial is useful for an invariant of a ribbon 2-knot.
Kauffman's bracket is an invariant of regular isotopy of knots and links which since its discovery in 1985 it has been used in many different directions: (a) it implies an easy proof of the invariance of (in fact, it is equivalent to) the Jones polynomial; (b) it is the basic ingredient in a completely combinatorial construction for quantum 3-manifold invariants; (c) by its fundamental character it plays an important role in some theories in Physics; it has been used in the context of virtual links; it has connections with many objects other objects in Mathematics and Physics. I show in this n…
To a smooth, compact, oriented, properly-embedded surface in the $4$-ball, we define an invariant of its boundary-preserving isotopy class from the Khovanov homology of its boundary link. Previous work showed that when the boundary link is empty, this invariant is determined by the genus of the surface. We show that this relative invariant: can obstruct sliceness of knots; detects a pair of slices for $9_{46}$; is not hindered by detecting connected sums with knotted $2$-spheres.
In the prequel of this paper, Kauffman and Ogasa introduced new topological quantum invariants of compact oriented 3-manifolds with boundary where the boundary is a disjoint union of two identical surfaces. The invariants are constructed via surgery on manifolds of the form $F \times I$ where $I$ denotes the unit interval. Since virtual knots and links are represented as links in such thickened surfaces, we are able also to construct invariants in terms of virtual link diagrams (planar diagrams with virtual crossings). These invariants are new, nontrivial, and calculable examples of quantum in…
We extend the theory of Vassiliev (or finite type) invariants for knots to knotoids using two different approaches. Firstly, we take closures on knotoids to obtain knots and we use the Vassiliev invariants for knots, proving that these are knotoid isotopy invariant. Secondly, we define finite type invariants directly on knotoids, by extending knotoid invariants to singular knotoid invariants via the Vassiliev skein relation. Then, for spherical knotoids we show that there are non-trivial type-1 invariants, in contrast with classical knot theory where type-1 invariants vanish. We give a complet…
A star-like isotopy for oriented links in 3-space is an isotopy which uses only Reidemeister II moves with opposite orientations and Reidemeister III moves with alternating orientations when checking the strands clockwise (or anticlockwise). We define a link polynomial derived from the Jones polynomial which is, in general, only invariant under star-like isotopies and we categorify it.
For a link in a thickened annulus $A \times I$, we define a $\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}$ filtration on Sarkar-Seed-Szabó's perturbation of the geometric spectral sequence. The filtered chain homotopy type is an invariant of the isotopy class of the annular link. From this, we define a two-dimensional family of annular link invariants and study their behavior under cobordisms. In the case of annular links obtained from braid closures, we obtain a necessary condition for braid quasipositivity and a sufficient condition for right-veeringness, as well as Bennequin-type inequali…
Meier and Zupan showed that every surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection and can therefore be represented by three simple tangles. This raises the possibility of applying methods from link homology to knotted surfaces. We use link homology to construct an invariant of knotted surfaces (up to isotopy) which distinguishes the unknotted sphere from certain knotted spheres. We also construct an invariant of a bridge-trisected surface in the the form of an $A_\infty$-algebra. Both invariants are defined by a novel connection between $A_\infty$-algebras and Manolescu and Ozsváth's hyp…
We define ambient isotopy invariants of oriented knots and links using the counting invariants of framed links defined by finite racks. These invariants reduce to the usual quandle counting invariant when the rack in question is a quandle. We are able to further enhance these counting invariants with 2-cocycles from the coloring rack's second rack cohomology satisfying a new degeneracy condition which reduces to the usual case for quandles.
The problem of classification of Legendrian knots (links) up to isotopy in the class of Legendrian embeddings (Legendrian isotopy) naturally leads to the following two subproblems. The first of them is: which combinations of the three classical invariants can be realized by a Legendrian knot? (It is well-known that each invariant by itself can be realized by a Legendrian knot). The first step in this direction was done by Bennequin who proved that the Bennequin number of a Legendrian knot is less than twice its genus. The second subproblem is whether there exist a pair of Legendrian knots whic…
We introduce the notion of a Khovanov-Floer theory. Roughly, such a theory assigns a filtered chain complex over Z/2 to a link diagram such that (1) the E_2 page of the resulting spectral sequence is naturally isomorphic to the Khovanov homology of the link; (2) this filtered complex behaves nicely under planar isotopy, disjoint union, and 1-handle addition; and (3) the spectral sequence collapses at the E_2 page for any diagram of the unlink. We prove that a Khovanov-Floer theory naturally yields a functor from the link cobordism category to the category of spectral sequences. In particular, …
We show that after stabilizations of opposite parity and braid isotopy, any two braids in the same topological link type cobound embedded annuli. We use this to prove the generalized Jones conjecture relating the braid index and algebraic length of closed braids within a link type, following a reformulation of the problem by Kawamuro.
