Techniques of gauge theory are used to define and compute an invariant of certain diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds. The invariant vanishes for any diffeomorphism which is smoothly isotopic to the identity. As an application, we give the first example of a diffeomorphism of a simply-connected 4-manifold which is homotopic to the identity map, but not smoothly isotopic to the identity.
We construct infinite families of topologically isotopic but smoothly distinct knotted spheres in many simply connected 4-manifolds that become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with $S^2 \times S^2$, and as a consequence, analogous families of diffeomorphisms and metrics of positive scalar curvature for such 4-manifolds. We also construct families of smoothly distinct links, all of whose corresponding proper sublinks are smoothly isotopic, that become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing.
David Gabai recently proved a smooth 4-dimensional "Light Bulb Theorem" in the absence of 2-torsion in the fundamental group. We extend his result to 4-manifolds with arbitrary fundamental group by showing that an invariant of Mike Freedman and Frank Quinn gives the complete obstruction to "homotopy implies isotopy" for embedded 2-spheres which have a common geometric dual. The invariant takes values in an Z/2Z-vector space generated by elements of order 2 in the fundamental group and has applications to unknotting numbers and pseudo-isotopy classes of self-diffeomorphisms. Our methods also gi…
Any two homologous surfaces of the same genus embedded in a smooth 4-manifold X with simply-connected complements are shown to be smoothly isotopic in the connected sum of X and the product of a 2-sphere with itself, if the surfaces are ordinary, and in the connected sum of X with the non-trivial sphere bundle over the sphere if they are characteristic.
The symplectic isotopy conjecture states that every smooth symplectic surface in $CP^2$ is symplectically isotopic to a complex algebraic curve. Progress began with Gromov's pseudoholomorphic curves [Gro85], and progressed further culminating in Siebert and Tian's proof of the conjecture up to degree 17 [ST05], but further progress has stalled. In this article we provide a new direction of attack on this problem. Using a solution to a nodal symplectic isotopy problem we guide model symplectic isotopies of smooth surfaces. This results in an equivalence between the smooth symplectic isotopy pro…
Let $X$ be a smooth, compact, oriented $4$-manifold. Building upon work of Li-Liu, Ruberman, Nakamura and Konno, we consider a families version of Seiberg-Witten theory and obtain obstructions to the existence of certain group actions on $X$ by diffeomorphisms. The obstructions show that certain group actions on $H^2(X , \mathbb{Z})$ preserving the intersection form can not be lifted an action of the same group on $X$ by diffeomorphisms. Using our obstructions, we construct numerous examples of group actions which can be realised continuously but can not be realised smoothly for any differenti…
A diffeomorphism $f$ of a compact manifold $X$ is pseudo-isotopic to the identity if there is a diffeomorphism $F$ of $X\times I$ which restricts to $f$ on $X\times 1$, and which restricts to the identity on $X\times 0$ and $\partial X\times I$. We construct examples of diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds which are pseudo-isotopic but not isotopic to the identity. To do so, we further understanding of which elements of the "second pseudo-isotopy obstruction", defined by Hatcher and Wagoner, can be realised by pseudo-isotopies of 4-manifolds. We also prove that all elements of the first and second p…
We present a grid diagram analogue of Carter, Rieger and Saito's smooth movie theorem. Specifically, we give definitions for grid movies, grid movie isotopies and present a definition of grid planar isotopy as a particular subset of the grid diagram moves: stabilization, destabilization and commutation. We show that grid planar isotopy classes are in 1-1 correspondence with smooth planar isotopy classes by using a new planar grid algorithm that takes a smooth knot diagram to a grid diagram. We then present generalizations of both the smooth and grid movie theorems that apply to surfaces with b…
Generalizing Milnor's result that an FTC (finite total curvature) knot has an isotopic inscribed polygon, we show that any two nearby knotted FTC graphs are isotopic by a small isotopy. We also show how to obtain sharper constants when the starting curve is smooth. We apply our main theorem to prove a limiting result for essential subarcs of a knot.
We extend the methods of Davis-Januszkiewicz-Lafont to provide a new obstruction to smooth Riemannian metric with non-positive sectional curvature. We construct examples of locally CAT(0) 4-manifolds $M$, whose universal covers satisfy isolated flats condition and contain 2-dimensional flats with the property that $\sqcup\ \partial^\infty F_i \hookrightarrow \partial^\infty \tilde M$ are non-trivial links that are not isotopic to any great circle link. Further, all the flats in $\tilde M$ are unknotted at infinity, and yet $M$ does not have a Riemannian smoothing.
We prove a gluing formula for the families Seiberg-Witten invariants of families of $4$-manifolds obtained by fibrewise connected sum. Our formula expresses the families Seiberg-Witten invariants of such a connected sum family in terms of the ordinary Seiberg-Witten invariants of one of the summands, under certain assumptions on the families. We construct some variants of the families Seiberg-Witten invariants and prove the gluing formula also for these variants. One variant incorporates a twist of the families moduli space using the charge conjugation symmetry of the Seiberg-Witten equations.…

In this paper, we are concerned with interactions between isoparametric theory and differential topology. Two foliations are called equivalent if there exists a diffeomorphism between the foliated manifolds mapping leaves to leaves. Using differential topology, we obtain several results towards the classification problem of isoparametric foliations up to equivalence. In particular, we show that each homotopy $n$-sphere has the "same" isoparametric foliations as the standard sphere $S^n$ has except for $n=4$, reducing the classification problem on homotopy spheres to that on the standard sphere…
From Furuta's $\frac{10}{8}$ theorem, we derive a smooth slicing obstruction for knots in $S^3$ using a spin $4$-manifold whose boundary is $0$-surgery on a knot. We show that this obstruction is able to detect torsion elements in the smooth concordance group and find topologically slice knots which are not smoothly slice.
We discuss an obstruction to a knot being smoothly slice that comes from minimum-genus bounds on smoothly embedded surfaces in definite 4-manifolds. As an example, we provide an alternate proof of the fact that the (2,1)-cable of the figure eight knot is not smoothly slice, as shown by Dai--Kang--Mallick--Park--Stoffregen in 2022. The main technical input of our argument consists of gauge-theoretic obstructions to smooth small-genus surfaces representing certain homology classes in $\mathbb{CP}^2\#\mathbb{CP}^2$ proved by Bryan in the 1990s.
If a continuous map f: X->Q is approximable arbitrary closely by embeddings X->Q, can some embedding be taken onto f by a pseudo-isotopy? This question, called Isotopic Realization Problem, was raised by Shchepin and Akhmet'ev. We consider the case where X is a compact n-polyhedron, Q a PL m-manifold and show that the answer is 'generally no' for (n,m)=(3,6); (1,3), and 'yes' when: 1) m>2n, (n,m)\neq (1,3); 2) 2m>3(n+1) and the set {(x,y)|f(x)=f(y)} has an equivariant (with respect to the factor exchanging involution) mapping cylinder neighborhood in X\times X; 3) m>n+2 and f is the compositio…
We develop a new approach to the classical problem on isotopy classification of embeddings of manifolds into Euclidean spaces. This approach involves studying of a new embedding invariant, of almost-embeddings and of smoothing, as well as explicit constructions of embeddings. Using this approach we obtain complete concrete classification results below the metastable dimension range, i.e. where the configuration spaces invariant of Haefliger-Wu is incomplete. Note that all known complete concrete classification results, except for the Haefliger classification of links and smooth knots, can be o…
The problem of classification of Legendrian knots (links) up to isotopy in the class of Legendrian embeddings (Legendrian isotopy) naturally leads to the following two subproblems. The first of them is: which combinations of the three classical invariants can be realized by a Legendrian knot? (It is well-known that each invariant by itself can be realized by a Legendrian knot). The first step in this direction was done by Bennequin who proved that the Bennequin number of a Legendrian knot is less than twice its genus. The second subproblem is whether there exist a pair of Legendrian knots whic…
The space of n-sided polygons embedded in three-space consists of a smooth manifold in which points correspond to piecewise linear or ``geometric'' knots, while paths correspond to isotopies which preserve the geometric structure of these knots. The topology of these spaces for the case n = 6 and n = 7 is described. In both of these cases, each knot space consists of five components, but contains only three (when n = 6) or four (when n = 7) topological knot types. Therefore ``geometric knot equivalence'' is strictly stronger than topological equivalence. This point is demonstrated by the hexag…
We work in the smooth category. Let $N$ be a closed connected orientable 4-manifold with torsion free $H_1$, where $H_q := H_q(N; \mathbb Z)$. Our main result is a readily calculable classification of embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^7$ up to isotopy, with an indeterminancy. Such a classification was only known before for $H_1=0$ by our earlier work from 2008. Our classification is complete when $H_2=0$ or when the signature of $N$ is divisible neither by 64 nor by 9. The group of knots $S^4\to\mathbb R^7$ acts on the set of embeddings $N\to\mathbb R^7$ up to isotopy by embedded connected sum. In Par…
We study smooth maps between smooth manifolds with only fold points as their singularities, and clarify the obstructions to the existence of such a map in a given homotopy class for certain dimensions. The obstructions are described in terms of characteristic classes, which arise as Postnikov invariants, and can be interpreted as primary and secondary obstructions to the elimination of certain singularities. We also discuss the relationship between the existence problem of fold maps and that of vector fields of stabilized tangent bundles.
In this paper we investigate the relationship between isotopy classes of knots and links in S^3 and the diffeomorphism types of homeomorphic smooth 4-manifolds. As a corollary of this initial investigation, we begin to uncover the surprisingly rich structure of diffeomorphism types of manifolds homeomorphic to the K3 surface.
We give a combinatorial description of the Legendrian differential graded algebra associated to a Legendrian knot in PxR, where P is a punctured Riemann surface. As an application we show that for any integer k and any homology class h in H_1(PxR) there are k Legendrian knots all representing h which are pairwise smoothly isotopic through a formal Legendrian isotopy but which lie in mutually distinct Legendrian isotopy classes.
Let $M_1$ and $M_2$ be closed connected orientable $3$-manifolds. We classify the sets of smooth and piecewise linear isotopy classes of embeddings $M_1\sqcup M_2\rightarrow S^6$.
We work in the smooth category. Let N be a closed connected n-manifold and assume that m>n+2. Denote by E^m(N) the set of embeddings N -> R^m up to isotopy. The group E^m(S^n) acts on E^m(N) by embedded connected sum of a manifold and a sphere. If E^m(S^n) is non-zero (which often happens for 2m<3n+4) then no results on this action and no complete description of E^m(N) were known. Our main results are examples of the triviality and the effectiveness of this action, and a complete isotopy classification of embeddings into R^7 for certain 4-manifolds N. The proofs are based on the Kreck modifica…
A knot in a solid torus defines a map on the set of (smooth or topological) concordance classes of knots in $S^3$. This set admits a group structure, but a conjecture of Hedden suggests that satellite maps never induce interesting homomorphisms: we give new evidence for this conjecture in both categories. First, we use Casson-Gordon signatures to give the first obstruction to a slice pattern inducing a homomorphism on the topological concordance group, constructing examples with every winding number besides $\pm 1$. We then provide subtle examples of satellite maps which map arbitrarily deep i…
Given a manifold N and a number m, we study the following question: is the set of isotopy classes of embeddings N->S^m finite? In case when the manifold N is a sphere the answer was given by A. Haefliger in 1966. In case when the manifold N is a disjoint union of spheres the answer was given by D. Crowley, S. Ferry and the author in 2011. We consider the next natural case when N is a product of two spheres. In the following theorem, FCS(i,j) is a concrete subset of the integer lattice depending only on the parity of i and j which is defined in the paper. Theorem. Assume that m>2p+q+2 and m<p+3…
This work treats on the question whether a given map f: M -> B of smooth closed manifolds is homotopic to a smooth fiber bundle. We define a first obstruction in H^1(B;Wh(π_1(E))) and, provided that this obstruction vanishes and one additional condition is verified, a second obstruction in Wh(π_1(E)) >. Both elements vanish if the answer to the above question is positive. In the case where B is the 1-sphere and the dimension of M exceeds five, we show that the converse is also true, using a relationship with two obstructions defined by Farrell in this particular situation.
A real 3-manifold is a smooth 3-manifold together with an orientation preserving smooth involution, called a real structure. In this article we study open book decompositions on smooth real 3-manifolds that are compatible with the real structure. We call them real open book decompositions. We show that each real open book carries a real contact structure and two real contact structures supported by the same real open book decomposition are equivariantly isotopic. We also show that every real contact structure on a closed 3-dimensional real manifold is supported by a real open book. Finally, we…
Every smooth cubic plane curve has 9 inflection points, 27 sextatic points, and 72 ``points of type nine". Motivated by these classical algebro-geometric constructions, we study the following topological question: Is it possible to continuously choose $n$ distinct unordered points on each smooth cubic plane curve for a natural number $n$? This question is equivalent to asking if certain fiber bundle admits a continuous section or not. We prove that the answer is no when $n$ is not a multiple of 9. Our result resolves a conjecture of Benson Farb.
In this article, we study the smooth mapping class group of a surface S relative to a given Cantor set, that is the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving smooth diffeomorphisms of S which preserve this Cantor set. When the Cantor set is the standard ternary Cantor set, we prove that the subgroup consisting of diffeomorphisms which are isotopic to the identity on S does not contain any distorted elements. Moreover, we prove a weak Tits alternative for these groups.
We use the Heegaard-Floer homology correction terms defined by Ozsváth--Szabó to formulate a new obstruction for a knot to be of finite order in the smooth concordance group. This obstruction bears a formal resemblance to that of Casson and Gordon but is sensitive to the difference between the smooth versus topological category. As an application we obtain new lower bounds for the concordance order of small crossing knots.
We use the Heegaard Floer obstructions defined by Grigsby, Ruberman, and Strle to show that forty-six of the sixty-seven knots through eleven crossings whose concordance orders were previously unknown have infinite concordance order.
We prove that no $14$-connected (resp. $30$-connected) stably parallelizable manifold $N^{30}$ (resp. $N^{62}$) of dimension $30$ (resp. $62$) with the Arf-Kervaire invariant 1 can be smoothly embedded into $\mathbb{R}^{36}$ (resp. $\mathbb{R}^{83}$).
Let $B$ be a Möbius band and $f:B \to \mathbb{R}$ be a Morse map taking a constant value on $\partial B$, and $\mathcal{S}(f,\partial B)$ be the group of diffeomorphisms $h$ of $B$ fixed on $\partial B$ and preserving $f$ in the sense that $f\circ h = f$. Under certain assumptions on $f$ we compute the group $π_0\mathcal{S}(f,\partial B)$ of isotopy classes of such diffeomorphisms. In fact, those computations hold for functions $f:B\to\mathbb{R}$ whose germs at critical points are smoothly equivalent to homogeneous polynomials $\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}$ without multiple factors. Together with…
The paper gives topological as well as rigid isotopy classification of smooth irreducible algebraic curves in the real projective 3-space for the case when the degree of the curve is at most six and its genus is at most one.
We show that any closed oriented 3-manifold can be topologically embedded in some simply-connected closed symplectic 4-manifold, and that it can be made a smooth embedding after one stabilization. As a corollary of the proof we show that the homology cobordism group is generated by Stein fillable 3-manifolds. We also find obstructions on smooth embeddings: there exists 3-manifolds which cannot smoothly embed in a way that appropriately respect orientations in any symplectic manifold with weakly convex boundary. This embedding obstruction can also be used to detect exotic smooth structures on 4…
We work in the smooth category. If there are knotted embeddings S^n\to R^m, which often happens for 2m<3n+4, then no concrete complete description of embeddings of n-manifolds into R^m up to isotopy was known, except for disjoint unions of spheres. Let N be a closed connected orientable 3-manifold. Our main result is the following description of the set Emb^6(N) of embeddings N\to R^6 up to isotopy. The Whitney invariant W : Emb^6(N) \to H_1(N;Z) is surjective. For each u \in H_1(N;Z) the Kreck invariant η_u : W^{-1}u \to Z_{d(u)} is bijective, where d(u) is the divisibility of the projection …
The $n$-skeleton of the canonical cubulation $\cal C$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ into unit cubes is called the {\it canonical scaffolding} ${\cal{S}}$. In this paper, we prove that any smooth, compact, closed, $n$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ with trivial normal bundle can be continuously isotoped by an ambient isotopy to a cubic submanifold contained in ${\cal{S}}$. In particular, any smooth knot $\mathbb{S}^{n}\hookrightarrow\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ can be continuously isotoped to a knot contained in ${\cal{S}}$.
It is natural to try to place the new polynomial invariants of links in algebraic topology (e.g. to try to interpret them using homology or homotopy groups). However, one can think that these new polynomial invariants are byproducts of a new more delicate algebraic invariant of 3-manifolds which measures the obstruction to isotopy of links (which are homotopic). We propose such an algebraic invariant based on skein theory introduced by Conway (1969) and developed by Giller (1982) as well as Lickorish and Millett (1987). (This is the first paper I wrote about skein modules, almost 20 years ago.…
We construct an enhanced version of knot contact homology, and show that we can deduce from it the group ring of the knot group together with the peripheral subgroup. In particular, it completely determines a knot up to smooth isotopy. The enhancement consists of the (fully noncommutative) Legendrian contact homology associated to the union of the conormal torus of the knot and a disjoint cotangent fiber sphere, along with a product on a filtered part of this homology. As a corollary, we obtain a new, holomorphic-curve proof of a result of the third author that the Legendrian isotopy class of …
