If a continuous map f: X->Q is approximable arbitrary closely by embeddings X->Q, can some embedding be taken onto f by a pseudo-isotopy? This question, called Isotopic Realization Problem, was raised by Shchepin and Akhmet'ev. We consider the case where X is a compact n-polyhedron, Q a PL m-manifold and show that the answer is 'generally no' for (n,m)=(3,6); (1,3), and 'yes' when:
1) m>2n, (n,m)\neq (1,3);
2) 2m>3(n+1) and the set {(x,y)|f(x)=f(y)} has an equivariant (with respect to the factor exchanging involution) mapping cylinder neighborhood in X\times X;
3) m>n+2 and f is the composition of a PL map and a TOP embedding.
In doing this, we answer affirmatively (with a minor preservation) a question of Kirby: does small smooth isotopy imply small smooth ambient isotopy in the metastable range, verify a conjecture of Kearton-Lickorish: small PL concordance implies small PL ambient isotopy in codimension \ge 3, and a conjecture set of Repovs-Skopenkov.
We give criteria for Morin singularities for germs of maps into lower dimensions. As an application, we study the bifurcation of Lefschetz singularities.
We will prove the relative homotopy principle for smooth maps with singularities of a given {\cal K}-invariant class with a mild condition. We next study a filtration of the group of homotopy self-equivalences of a given manifold P by considering singularities of non-negative {\cal K}-codimensions.
We shall give useful criteria of lips, beaks and swallowtail singularities of smooth map from the plane into the plane. As an application of criteria, we will discuss the singularities of Cauchy problem of single conservation law.
Milnor fibrations have been studied since 1960's. In this paper, we study singular points of differentiable maps, called Milnor fibration product maps, obtained by several Milnor fibrations. We give a characterization of singular points of such product maps, and for the case of certain weighted homogeneous polynomials, a criterion for a fold point together with its index.
Lips and swallow-tails are generic local moves of singularities of a smooth map to a 2-manifold. We prove that these moves of singularities of the product map of two functions on a 3-manifold can be realized by isotopies of the functions.
Milnor fibrations were extended by Mutsuo Oka for certain mixed polynomial. In this paper, we study singular points of differentiable maps into the 2-dimensional torus, called Milnor fibration product maps, obtained by several Milnor fibrations for mixed polynomial. We give a characterization of singular points of such product maps, and for the case of certain polar weighted homogeneous polynomials, a criterion for a fold singular point.
Let N and P be smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p (n \geq p \geq 2) respectively. Let Ω(N,P) denote an open subspace of J^{infty}(N,P) which consists of all regular jets and jets with prescribed singularities of types A_{i}, D_{j} and E_{k}. An Ω-regular map f:N \to P refers to a smooth map having only singularities in Ω(N,P) and satisfy the transversality condition. We will prove the homotopy principle in the existence level for Ω-regular maps.
Let P be a connected smooth p-manifold. We describe the group of all cobordism classes of smooth maps of n-manifolds to P with singularities of a given $cal K$-invariant class in terms of certain stable homotopy groups by applying the relative homotopy principle on the existence level. We also deal with the oriented version and construct a classifying space to which this oriented cobordism group is represented as the set of homotopy classes of P in the codimension n<p and n\geqq p\geqq 2.
Let $N$ and $P$ be smooth closed manifolds of dimensions $n$ and $p$ respectively. Given a Thom-Boardman symbol $I$, a smooth map $f:N\to P$ is called an $Ω^{I}$-regular map if and only if the Thom-Boardman symbol of each singular point of $f$ is not greater than $I$ in the lexicographic order. We will represent the group of all cobordism classes of $Ω^{I}$-regular maps of $n$-dimensional closed manifolds into $P$ in terms of certain stable homotopy groups. As an application we will study the relationship among the stable homotopy groups of spheres, the above cobordism group and higher singula…
Let N and P be smooth manifolds of dimensions n and p (n>=p>=2). Let Omega^{I}(N,P) denote an open subspace of J(N,P) which consists of all Boardman submanifolds Sigma^{J}(N,P) with J=< I in the lexicographic order. We will prove the homotopy principle in the existence level for Omega^{I}(N,P).
A generic smooth map of a closed $2k$-manifold into $(3k-1)$-space has a finite number of cusps ($Σ^{1,1}$-singularities). We determine the possible numbers of cusps of such maps. A fold map is a map with singular set consisting of only fold singularities ($Σ^{1,0}$-singularities). Two fold maps are fold bordant if there are cobordisms between their source- and target manifolds with a fold map extending the two maps between the boundaries, if the two targets agree and the target cobordism can be taken as a product with a unit interval then the maps are fold cobordant. We compute the cobordism …
In this paper, we study deformations of Brieskorn polynomials of two variables obtained by adding linear terms consisting of the conjugates of complex variables and prove that the deformed polynomial maps have only indefinite fold and cusp singularities in general. We then estimate the number of cusps appearing in such a deformation. As a corollary, we show that a deformation of a complex Morse singularity with real linear terms has only indefinite folds and cusps in general and the number of cusps is 3.
We compute the expected value of various quantities related to the biparametric singularities of a pair of smooth centered Gaussian random fields on an n-dimensional compact manifold, such as the lengths of the critical curves and contours of a fixed index and the number of cusps. We obtain certain expressions under no particular assumptions other than smoothness of the two fields, but more explicit formulae are derived under varying levels of additional constraints such as the two random fields being i.i.d, stationary, isotropic etc.
We give an explicit simple construction for classifying spaces of maps obtained as hyperplane projections of immersions. We prove structure theorems for these classifying spaces.
A singular point of a smooth map F: M -> N of manifolds is a point in M at which the rank of the differential dF is less than the minimum of dimensions of M and N. The classical invariant of the set S of singular points of F of a given type is defined by taking the fundamental class [\bar{S}]\in H_*(M) of the closure of S. We introduce and study new invariants of singular sets for which the classical invariants may not be defined, i.e., for which \bar{S} may not possess the fundamental class. The simplest new invariant is defined by carefully choosing the fundamental class of the intersection …
Suppose that f and g are Markov surjections, each defined on a wedge of circles, each fixing the branch point and having the branch point as the only critical value. We show that if the points in the inverse limit spaces associated with f and g corresponding to the branch point are distinguished then these inverse limit spaces are homeomorphic if and only if the substitutions associated with f and g are weakly equivalent. This, and related results, are applied to one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces, one-dimensional unstable manifolds of hyperbolic sets, and inverse limits of tent maps w…
In [2], N.Dutertre and T. Fukui used Viro's integral calculus to study the topology of stable maps $f:M\rightarrow N$ between two smooth manifolds $M$ and $N$. They also discussed several applications to Morin maps. In particular, in Theorem 6.2 [2], they show an equality relating the Euler characteristic of a compact manifold $M$ and the Euler characteristic of the singular sets of a Morin map defined on $M$. In this paper we show how Morse theory for manifolds with boundary can be applied to the study of the singular sets of a Morin map in order to obtain a new proof of Dutertre-Fukui's Theo…
Let M be a smooth connected compact surface, P be either the real line R^1 or the circle S^1. For a subset X of M denote by D(M,X) the group of diffeomorphisms of M fixed on X. In this note we consider a special class F of smooth maps f:M\to P with isolated singularities which includes all Morse maps. For each such map f from F we consider certain submanifolds X of M that are "adopted" with f in a natural sense, and study the right action of the group D(M,X) on C^{\infty}(M,P). The main result describes the homotopy types of the connected components of the stabilizers S(f) and orbits O(f) for …
We characterize those closed $2k$-manifolds admitting smooth maps into $(k+1)$-manifolds with only finitely many critical points, for $k\in\{2,4\}$. We compute then the minimal number of critical points of such smooth maps for $k=2$ and, under some fundamental group restrictions, also for $k=4$. The main ingredients are King's local classification of isolated singularities, decomposition theory, low dimensional cobordisms of spherical fibrations and 3-manifolds topology.
We prove a conjecture due to M. Kazarian, connecting two classifying spaces in singularity theory. These spaces are: - Kazarian's space (generalizing Vassiliev's algebraic complex and) showing which cohomology classes are represented by singularity strata. - Author's space $X_τ$ giving homotopy representation of cobordisms of singular maps with a given list of allowed singularities \cite{R--Sz}. As a consequence we obtain the ranks of cobordism groups of singular maps with a given list of allowed singularities, and also their $p$-torsion parts for big primes $p.$ Further we give complete answe…
We study smooth maps between smooth manifolds with only fold points as their singularities, and clarify the obstructions to the existence of such a map in a given homotopy class for certain dimensions. The obstructions are described in terms of characteristic classes, which arise as Postnikov invariants, and can be interpreted as primary and secondary obstructions to the elimination of certain singularities. We also discuss the relationship between the existence problem of fold maps and that of vector fields of stabilized tangent bundles.
