We study the Cauchy problem of the compressible Euler system with strongly singular velocity alignment. We establish a global well-posedness theory for the system with small smooth initial data. Additionally, we derive asymptotic emergent behaviors for the system, providing time decay estimates with optimal decay rates. Notably, the optimal decay rate we obtain does not align with the corresponding fractional heat equation within our considered range, where the parameter $α\in(0,1)$. This highlights the distinct feature of the alignment operator.
We consider the compressible Euler system with a family of nonlinear velocity alignments. The system is a nonlinear extension of the Euler-alignment system in collective dynamics. We show the asymptotic emergent phenomena of the system: alignment and flocking. Different types of nonlinearity and nonlocal communication protocols are investigated, resulting in a variety of different asymptotic behaviors.
This paper is devoted to a rigorous derivation of the isentropic Euler-alignment system with singular communication weights $ϕ_α(x) = |x|^{-α}$ for some $α> 0$. We consider a kinetic BGK-alignment model consisting of a kinetic BGK-type equation with a singular Cucker-Smale alignment force. By taking into account a small relaxation parameter, which corresponds to the asymptotic regime of a strong effect from BGK operator, we quantitatively derive the isentropic Euler-alignment system with pressure $p(ρ) = ρ^γ$, $γ= 1 + \frac2d$ from that kinetic equation.
We study one-dimensional Eulerian dynamics with nonlocal alignment interactions, featuring strong short-range alignment, and long-range misalignment. Compared with the well-studied Euler-alignment system, the presence of the misalignment brings different behaviors of the solutions, including the possible creation of vacuum at infinite time, which destabilizes the solutions. We show that with a strongly singular short-range alignment interaction, the solution is globally regular, despite the effect of misalignment.
We consider a compressible Euler system with singular velocity alignment, known as the Euler-alignment system, describing the flocking behaviors of large animal groups. We establish a local well-posedness theory for the system, as well as a global well-posedness theory for small initial data. We also show the asymptotic flocking behavior, where solutions converge to a constant steady state exponentially in time.
In this paper, the compressible Euler system with velocity alignment and damping is considered, where the influence matrix of velocity alignment is not positive definite. Sound speed is used to reformulate the system into symmetric hyperbolic type. The global existence and uniqueness of smooth solution for small initial data is provided.
We study the formation of singularities for the Euler-Alignment system with influence function $ψ=\frac{k_α}{|x|^α}$ in 1D. As in [20] the problem is reduced to the analysis of a nonlocal 1D equation. We show the existence of singularities in finite time for any $α$ in the range $0<α<2$ in both the real line and the periodic case.
We study the pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal alignment interactions, which arises as a macroscopic representation of complex biological systems modeling animal flocks. For such Euler-Alignment system with bounded interactions, a critical threshold phenomenon is proved by Tadmor-Tan in 2014, where global regularity depends on initial data. With strongly singular interactions, global regularity is obtained by Do-Kiselev-Ryzhik-Tan in 2018, for all initial data. We consider the remaining case when the interaction is weakly singular. We show a critical threshold, similar to the system w…
Weak asymptotic methods for 3-D self-gravitating pressureless fluids. Application to the creation and evolution of solar systems from the fully nonlinear Euler-Poisson equations
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the compressible Euler system with strongly singular velocity alignment. We prove the existence and uniqueness of global solutions in critical Besov spaces to the considered system with small initial data. The local-in-time solvability is also addressed. Moreover, we show the large-time asymptotic behavior and optimal decay estimates of the solutions as $t\to \infty$.
We develop a global wellposedness theory for weak solutions to the 1D Euler-alignment system with measure-valued density, bounded velocity, and locally integrable communication protocol. A satisfactory understanding of the low-regularity theory is an issue of pressing interest, as smooth solutions may lose regularity in finite time. However, no such theory currently exists except for a very special class of alignment interactions. We show that the dynamics of the 1D Euler-alignment system can be effectively described by a nonlocal scalar balance law, the entropy conditions of which serves as a…
In this paper, we study the limiting behavior of Riemann solutions to the Euler equations of one-dimensional compressible fluid flow as $γ$ tends to one. We show that the limit solution forms the delta wave to the pressureless Euler system of one-dimensional compressible fluid flow in the distribution sense. Some numerical results exhibiting the phenomena of concentration are also presented.
We establish a relative energy framework for the Euler-Korteweg system with non-convex energy. This allows us to prove weak-strong uniqueness and to show convergence to a Cahn-Hilliard system in the large friction limit. We also use relative energy to show that solutions of Euler-Korteweg with convex energy converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing capillarity limit, as long as the latter admits sufficiently regular strong solutions.
We consider the Euler alignment system with mildly singular interaction kernels. When the local repulsion term is of the fractional type, global in time existence of smooth solutions was proved in\cite{do2018global,shvydkoy2017eulerian1,shvydkoy2017eulerian2,shvydkoy2017eulerian3}. Here, we consider a class of less singular interaction kernels and establish the global regularity of solutions as long as the interaction kernels are not integrable. The proof relies on modulus of continuity estimates for a class of parabolic integro-differential equations with a drift and mildly singular kernels.
We rigorously show a large friction limit of hydrodynamic models with alignment, attractive, and repulsive effects. More precisely, we consider pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces and provide a quantitative estimate of large friction limit to a continuity equation with nonlocal velocity fields, which is often called an aggregation equation. Our main strategy relies on the relative entropy argument combined with the estimate of $p$-Wasserstein distance between densities.
We investigate the behavior of granular gases in the limit of small Knudsen number, that is very frequent collisions. We deal with the strongly inelastic case, in one dimension of space and velocity. We are able to prove the convergence toward the pressureless Euler system. The proof relies on dispersive relations at the kinetic level, which leads to the so-called Oleinik property at the limit.
In this note we continue our study of unidirectional solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems with strongly singular communication kernels $ϕ(x):=|x|^{-(n+α)}$ for $α\in(0,2)$. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents governing multi-dimensional collective behavior of flocks. Here, we consider the range $1<α<2$ and establish the global regularity of smooth solutions, together with a full description of their long time dynamics. Specifically, we develop the flocking theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned ve…
In this paper, we study the global Cauchy problem for a two-phase fluid model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two equations is through the drag force. We establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for that system when the initial data are sufficiently small and regular. Main difficulties arise in the absence of pressure in the Euler equations. In order to resolve it, we properly combine the large-time behavior of classical solutions and the bootstrapping argument to construct t…
We study a pressureless Euler system with a nonlinear density-dependent alignment term, originating in the Cucker-Smale swarming models. The alignment term is dissipative in the sense that it tends to equilibrate the velocities. Its density dependence is natural: the alignment rate increases in the areas of high density due to species discomfort. The diffusive term has the order of a fractional Laplacian $(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$, $α\in (0, 1)$. The corresponding Burgers equation with a linear dissipation of this type develops shocks in a finite time. We show that the alignment nonlinearity enh…
The behaviour of the solutions to the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler equations when the pressure vanishes is analysed. It is shown that any solution composed of a 1-shock wave and a 2-rarefaction wave tends to a two-shock wave when the pressure gets smaller than a fixed value determined by the Riemann data; by contrast, any solution composed of a 1-rarefaction wave and a 2-shock wave tends to a two-rarefaction wave. The two situations are illustrated with numerical tests.
The purpose of this note is to give a complete proof of a $C^{0,α}$ regularity result for the pressure for weak solutions of the two-dimensional "incompressible Euler equations" when the fluid velocity enjoys the same type of regularity in a compact simply connected domain with $C^2$ boundary. To accomplish our result we realize that it is compulsory to introduce a new weak formulation for the boundary condition of the pressure which is consistent with, and equivalent to, that of classical solutions.
This letter studies the Euler-alignment system with weakly singular influence functions by introducing a novel technique to bound the density. Instead of resorting to a nonlinear maximum principle used in [C. Tan, Nonlinearity, 33: 1907--1924, 2020] to bound the interaction term $ψ\astρ$ by $ρ^s$ with $s\in (0, 1)$ for $ψ$ with an algebraic singularity at origin, we bound $ψ*ρ$ by a relaxed constant for any $ψ\in L^1$. We thus establish the global-in-time existence results with weaker assumptions on $ψ$ and refined solution bounds, characterized by the structure of $ψ$.
In this note we reveal new classes of solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems governing collective behavior of flocks. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents, and are globally well-posed in multi-dimensional settings subject to a threshold condition similar to the one dimensional case. We develop the flocking and stability theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned velocity field. In the context of multi-scale models introduced in \cite{ST-multi} our solutions can be superimposed into Mikado formations -- c…
We here construct (large) local and small global-in-time regular unique solutions to the fractional Euler alignment system in the whole space ${\mathbb R}^d$, in the case where the deviation of the initial density from a constant is sufficiently small. Our analysis strongly relies on the use of Besov spaces of the type $L^1(0,T;\dot B^s_{p,1})$, which allow to get time independent estimates for the density even though it satisfies a transport equation with no damping. Our choice of a functional setting is not optimal but aims at providing a transparent and accessible argumentation.
In this paper, the Riemann problem for the pressureless Euler equations with a discontinuous source term is considered. The delta shock wave solution is obtained by combining the generalized Rankine-Hugoniot conditions together with the method of characteristics for different situations, which reflects the impact of the source term on the delta shock front. Moreover, during the construction process of the Riemann solution, some interesting phenomena are also observed, such as the disappearance of the delta shock wave and the occurrence of the vacuum state, etc.
We analyse the one-dimensional pressureless Euler-Poisson equations with a linear damping and non-local interaction forces. These equations are relevant for modelling collective behavior in mathematical biology. We provide a sharp threshold between the supercritical region with finite-time breakdown and the subcritical region with global-in-time existence of the classical solution. We derive an explicit form of solution in Lagrangian coordinates which enables us to study the time-asymptotic behavior of classical solutions with the initial data in the subcritical region.
We consider the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with local alignment as a mesoscopic description for the flocking dynamics. The local alignment was first proposed by Karper, Mellet and Trivisa \cite{K-M-T-3}, as a singular limit of a normalized non-symmetric alignment introduced by Motsch and Tadmor \cite{M-T-1}. The existence of weak solutions to this model is obtained in \cite{K-M-T-3}. The time-asymptotic flocking behavior is shown in this article. Our main contribution is to provide a rigorous derivation from mesoscopic to mascroscopic description for the Cucker-Smale flocking models. More prec…
The goal of this note is to study limiting behavior of a self-organized continuous flock evolving according to the 1D hydrodynamic Euler Alignment model. We provide a series of quantitative estimates that show how far the density of the limiting flock is from a uniform distribution. The key quantity that controls density distortion is the entropy $\mathcal{H} = \int ρ\log ρ\,\mbox{d}x$, and the measure of deviation from uniformity is given by a well-known conserved quantity $e = u' + \mathcal{L}_ψρ$, where $u$ is velocity and $\mathcal{L}_ψ$ is the communication operator with kernel $ψ$. The c…
In this paper, we study the limits of Riemann solutions to the inhomogeneous Euler equations of one-dimensional compressible fluid flow as the adiabatic exponent $γ$ tends to one. Different from the homogeneous equations, the Riemann solutions of the inhomogeneous system are non self-similar. It is rigorously shown that, as $γ$ tends to one, any two-shock Riemann solution tends to a delta shock solution of the pressureless Euler system with a source term, and the intermediate density between the two shocks tends to a weighted $δ$-mesaure which forms the delta shock; while any two-rarefaction-w…
We study the limiting dynamics of the Euler Alignment system with a smooth, heavy-tailed interaction kernel $ϕ$ and unidirectional velocity $\mathbf{u} = (u, 0, \ldots, 0)$. We demonstrate a striking correspondence between the entropy function $e_0 = \partial_1 u_0 + ϕ*ρ_0$ and the limiting 'concentration set', i.e., the support of the singular part of the limiting density measure. In a typical scenario, a flock experiences aggregation toward a union of $C^1$ hypersurfaces: the image of the zero set of $e_0$ under the limiting flow map. This correspondence also allows us to make statements abo…
We present a new hydrodynamic model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two systems is through the drag force. This coupled system can be derived, in the hydrodynamic limit, from the particle-fluid equations that are frequently used to study the medical sprays, aerosols and sedimentation problems. For the proposed system, we first construct the local-in-time classical solutions in an appropriate $L^2$ Sobolev space. We also establish the \emph{a priori} large-time behavior estimate by constructing a Lyapun…
In this paper we address the problem of well-posedness of multi-dimensional topological Euler-alignment models introduced in \cite{ST-topo}. The main result demonstrates local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions in class $(ρ,u) \in H^{m+α} \times H^{m+1}$ on the periodic domain $\mathbb{T}^n$, where $0<α<2$ is the order of singularity of the topological communication kernel $ϕ(x,y)$, and $m = m(n,α)$ is large. Our approach is based on new sharp coercivity estimates for the topological alignment operator \[ \mathcal{L}_ϕf(x) = \int_{\mathbb{T}^n} ϕ(x,y) (f(y) - f(x) ) dy, \] which r…
This paper is concerned with the global wellposedness of the Euler-Poisson-alignment (EPA) system. This system arises from collective dynamics, and features two types of nonlocal interactions: the repulsive electric force and the alignment force. It is known that the repulsive electric force generates oscillatory solutions, which is difficult to be controlled by the nonlocal alignment force using conventional comparison principles. We construct \emph{invariant regions} such that the solution trajectories cannot exit, and therefore obtain global wellposedness for subcritical initial data that l…
The Riemann solutions to Chaplygin Euler equations with a scaled pressure are considered. When the pressure vanishes, there are three cases. The Riemann solution containing two shock waves converges to the delta shock wave solution of the transport equations. During this process, both the strength and propagation speed of the delta shock are investigated in detail. We find that there is something different from that for polytropic or isothermal gas. The Riemann solution containing two rarefaction waves tends to the two contact discontinuity solution to the transport equations as the pressure g…
The Euler-Poisson-Alignment (EPA) system appears in mathematical biology and is used to model, in a hydrodynamic limit, a set agents interacting through mutual attraction/repulsion as well as alignment forces. We consider one-dimensional EPA system with a class of singular alignment terms as well as natural attraction/repulsion terms. The singularity of the alignment kernel produces an interesting effect regularizing the solutions of the equation and leading to global regularity for wide range of initial data. This was recently observed in the paper by Do, Kiselev, Ryzhik and Tan. Our goal in …
In this paper, we analyze the pressureless damped Euler-Riesz equations posed in either $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{T}^d$. We construct the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the system around a constant background state. We also establish large-time behaviors of classical solutions showing the solutions towards the equilibrium as time goes to infinity. For the whole space case, we first show the algebraic decay rate of solutions under additional assumptions on the initial data compared to the existence theory. We then refine the argument to have the exponential …

A well-known result of Carrillo, Choi, Tadmor, and Tan states that the 1D Euler Alignment model with smooth interaction kernels possesses a 'critical threshold' criterion for the global existence or finite-time blowup of solutions, depending on the global nonnegativity (or lack thereof) of the quantity $e_0 = \partial_x u_0 + ϕ*ρ_0$. In this note, we rewrite the 1D Euler Alignment model as a first-order system for the particle trajectories in terms of a certain primitive $ψ_0$ of $e_0$; using the resulting structure, we give a complete characterization of global-in-time existence versus finite…
We present a systematic approach to regularity theory of the multi-dimensional Euler alignment systems with topological diffusion introduced in \cite{STtopo}. While these systems exhibit flocking behavior emerging from purely local communication, bearing direct relevance to empirical field studies, global and even local well-posedness has proved to be a major challenge in multi-dimensional settings due to the presence of topological effects. In this paper we reveal two important classes of global smooth solutions -- parallel shear flocks with incompressible velocity and stationary density prof…
We consider a hydrodynamic model of self-organized evolution of agents, with singular interaction kernel $ϕ_α(x)=1/|x|^{1+α}$ ($0<α<2$), in the presence of an additional external force. Well-posedness results are already available for the unforced system in classical regularity spaces. We define a notion of solution in larger function spaces, in particular in $L^\infty$ ("weak solutions") and in $W^{1,\infty}$ ("strong solutions"), and we discuss existence and uniqueness of these solutions. Furthermore, we show that several important properties of classical solutions carry over to these less r…
In this note we continue our study of unidirectional solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems with strongly singular communication kernels $ϕ(x):=|x|^{-(n+α)}$ for $α\in(0,2)$. Here, we consider the critical case $α=1$ and establish a couple of global existence results of smooth solutions, together with a full description of their long time dynamics. The first one is obtained via Schauder-type estimates under a null initial entropy condition and the other is a small data result. In fact, using Duhamel's approach we get that any solution is almost Lipschitz-continuous in space. We exte…
We prove a blow up criterion in terms of the Hessian of the pressure of smooth solutions $u\in C([0, T); W^{2,q} (\mathbb R^3))$, $q>3$ of the incompressible Euler equations. We show that a blow up at $t=T$ happens only if $$\int_0 ^T \int_0 ^t \left\{\int_0 ^s \|D^2 p (τ)\|_{L^\infty} dτ\exp \left( \int_{s} ^t \int_0 ^{\s} \|D^2 p (τ)\|_{L^\infty} dτd\s \right) \right\}dsdt \, = +\infty.$$ As consequences of this criterion we show that there is no blow up at $t=T$ if $ \|D^2 p(t)\|_{L^\infty} \le \frac {c}{(T-t)^2}$ with $c<1$ as $t\nearrow T$. Under the additional assumption of $\int_0 ^T \|…
