We consider the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with local alignment as a mesoscopic description for the flocking dynamics. The local alignment was first proposed by Karper, Mellet and Trivisa \cite{K-M-T-3}, as a singular limit of a normalized non-symmetric alignment introduced by Motsch and Tadmor \cite{M-T-1}. The existence of weak solutions to this model is obtained in \cite{K-M-T-3}. The time-asymptotic flocking behavior is shown in this article. Our main contribution is to provide a rigorous derivation from mesoscopic to mascroscopic description for the Cucker-Smale flocking models. More precisely, we prove the hydrodynamic limit of the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with local alignment towards the pressureless Euler system with nonlocal alignment, under a regime of strong local alignment. Based on the relative entropy method, a main difficulty in our analysis comes from the fact that the entropy of the limit system has no strictly convexity in terms of density variable. To overcome this, we combine relative entropy quantities with the 2-Wasserstein distance.
In this chapter, we present the Cucker-Smale type flocking models, and discuss their mathematical structures and flocking theorems in terms of coupling strength, interaction topologies and initial data. In 2007, two mathematicians Felipe Cucker and Steve Smale introduced a second-order particle model which resembles Newton's equations in $N$-body system, and present how their simple model can exhibit emergent flocking behavior under sufficient conditions expressed only in terms of parameters and initial data. After Cucker-Smale's seminal works, their model has received lots of attention from a…
For the discrete Cucker-Smale's flocking model with a singular communication weight $ψ(s) = s^{-α}$, with $0<α<1/2$ , we prove that the velocity component of certain type of weak solutions is absolutly continuous. This result enables us to obtain existence and uniqeness of global solutions.
A coupled kinetic-fluid model is investigated, which describes the dynamic behavior of an ensemble of Cucker-Smale flocking particles interacting with a viscous fluid in a three-dimensional bounded domain. This system consists of a kinetic Cucker-Smale equation and a compressible Navier-Stokes system with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The global existence of weak solutions to this system with adiabatic coefficient $γ> {3}/{2}$ is established.
We first prove the well-posedness of weak and strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker-Smale model in the Sobolev space with the initial data having compact velocity support. Then we study the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with noise. By introducing two weighted Hilbert spaces, we successfully establish the well-posedness of weak and strong solutions, respectively. Our proof is based on weighted energy estimates. Finally, we rigorously justify the vanishing noise limit.
We prove existence of global $C^1$ piecewise weak solutions for the discrete Cucker-Smale's flocking model with the communication weight $ψ(s)=s^{-α}, 0<α<1.$ We also discuss the possibility of finite in time alignment of the velocities of the particles.
This paper deals with the derivation and analysis of a compressible Euler-type equation with singular commutator, which is derived from a hyperbolic limit of the kinetic description to the Cucker-Smale model of interacting individuals
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of local strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker--Smale model coupled with the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equation in the whole space. Moreover, the blowup mechanism for strong solutions to the coupled system is also investigated.
In this note, we consider generalizations of the Cucker-Smale dynamical system and we derive rigorously in Wasserstein's type topologies the mean-field limit (and propagation of chaos) to the Vlasov-type equation introduced in [12].Unlike previous results on the Cucker-Smale model, our approach is not based on the empirical measures, but, using an Eulerian point of view introduced in [8] in the Hamiltonian setting, we show the limit providing explicit constants.%Using an Eulerian point of view introduced in \cite{gmp} in the Hamiltonian setting, we don't use empirical measures and provide expl…
The hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic Cucker-Smale model is investigated. In addition to the free-transport of individuals and the Cucker-Smale alignment operator, the model under consideration includes a strong local alignment term. This term was recently derived as the singular limit of an alignment operator due to Motsch and Tadmor. The model is enhanced with the addition of noise and a confinement potential. The objective of this work is the rigorous investigation of the singular limit corresponding to strong noise and strong local alignment. The proof relies on the relative entropy method a…
The Cucker-Smale flocking model belongs to a wide class of kinetic models that describe a collective motion of interacting particles that exhibit some specific tendency e.g. to aggregate, flock or disperse. The paper examines the kinetic Cucker-Smale equation with a singular communication weight. Given a compactly supported measure as an initial datum we construct a global in time weak measure-valued solution in the space $C_{weak}(0,\infty;\mathcal{M})$. The solution is defined as a mean-field limit of the empirical distributions of particles, which dynamics is governed by the Cucker-Smale pa…
We study a Cucker-Smale-type flocking model with distributed time delay where individuals interact with each other through normalized communication weights. Based on a Lyapunov functional approach, we provide sufficient conditions for the velocity alignment behavior. We then show that as the number of individuals N tends to infinity, the N-particle system can be well approximated by a delayed Vlasov alignment equation. Furthermore, we also establish the global existence of measure-valued solutions for the delayed Vlasov alignment equation and its large-time asymptotic behavior.
We study a hydrodynamic Cucker-Smale-type model with time delay in communication and information processing, in which agents interact with each other through normalized communication weights. The model consists of a pressureless Euler system with time delayed non-local alignment forces. We resort to its Lagrangian formulation and prove the existence of its global in time classical solutions. Moreover, we derive a sufficient condition for the asymptotic flocking behavior of the solutions. Finally, we show the presence of a critical phenomenon for the Eulerian system posed in the spatially one-d…
We introduce a multi-dimensional variant of the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with singular and matrix-valued communication weight, which reduces to the singular kinetic Cucker-Smale equation in the one-dimensional case. We propose an appropriate notion of weak measure-valued solution to this second-order system and a suitable first-order reduction, which persist beyond the blow-up time in classical norms. The core of the paper is to show that both formulations are equivalent in this singular regime, thus extending the previous results from regular to weakly singular communication weights. As a c…
In this paper, we consider the Cucker-Smale flocking particles which are subject to the same velocity-dependent noise, which exhibits a phase change phenomenon occurs bringing the system from a "non flocking" to a "flocking" state as the strength of noises decreases. We rigorously show the stochastic mean-field limit from the many-particle Cucker-Smale system with multiplicative noises to the Vlasov-type stochastic partial differential equation as the number of particles goes to infinity. More precisely, we provide a quantitative error estimate between solutions to the stochastic particle syst…
We study emergent behaviors of thermomechanical Cucker-Smale (TCS) ensemble confined in a harmonic potential field. In the absence of external force field, emergent dynamics of TCS particles has been extensively studied recently under various frameworks formulated in terms of initial configuration, system parameters and network topologies. Moreover, the TCS model does not exhibit rotating motions in the absence of an external force field. In this paper, we show the emergence of periodically rotating one-point cluster for the TCS model in a harmonic potential field using elementary energy estim…
The existing state of the art for singular models of flocking is overviewed, starting from microscopic model of Cucker and Smale with singular communication weight, through its mesoscopic mean-filed limit, up to the corresponding macroscopic regime. For the microscopic Cucker-Smale (CS) model, the collision-avoidance phenomenon is discussed, also in the presence of bonding forces and the decentralized control. For the kinetic mean-field model, the existence of global-in-time measure-valued solutions, with a special emphasis on a weak atomic uniqueness of solutions is sketched. Ultimately, for …
In this paper, we study the propagation of the mono-kinetic distribution in the Cucker-Smale-type kinetic equations. More precisely, if the initial distribution is a Dirac mass for the variables other than the spatial variable, then we prove that this "mono-kinetic" structure propagates in time. For that, we first obtain the stability estimate of measure-valued solutions to the kinetic equation, by which we ensure the uniqueness of the mono-kinetic solution in the class of measure-valued solutions with compact supports. We then show that the mono-kinetic distribution is a special measure-value…
We study a variant of the Cucker-Smale model where information between agents propagates with a finite speed $\mathfrak{c}>0$. This leads to a system of functional differential equations with state-dependent delay. We prove that, if initially the agents travel slower than $c$, then the discrete model admits unique global solutions. Moreover, under a generic assumption on the influence function, we show that there exists a critical information propagation speed $\mathfrak{c}^\ast>0$ such that if $\mathfrak{c}\geq\mathfrak{c}^\ast$, the system exhibits asymptotic flocking in the sense of the cla…
In this paper, we study global existence and large time behaviors of strong solutions to the kinetic Cucker--Smale model coupled with the three dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in the whole space. Using the maximal regularity estimate on the Stokes equations, global-in-time strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the coupled system are obtained under small initial data regime. The optimal decay rate of the system, in the sense that the energy of the system decays at a rate coinciding with the one corresponding to the underling incompressible Navier--Stokes equations withou…
We study a Cucker-Smale-type system with time delay in which agents interact with each other through normalized communication weights. We construct a Lyapunov functional for the system and provide sufficient conditions for asymptotic flocking, i.e., convergence to a common velocity vector. We also carry out a rigorous limit passage to the mean-field limit of the particle system as the number of particles tends to infinity. For the resulting Vlasov-type equation we prove the existence, stability and large-time behavior of measure-valued solutions. This is, to our best knowledge, the first such r…
In two recent papers the authors study the existence of weak solutions and the hydrodynamic limit of kinetic flocking equations with strong local alignment. The introduction of a strong local alignment term to model flocking behavior was formally motivated in these papers as a limiting case of an alignment term proposed by Motsch and Tadmor. In this paper, we rigorously justify this limit, and show that the considered equation is indeed a limit of the Motsch-Tadmor model when the radius of interaction goes to zero. The analysis involves velocity averaging lemmas and several $L^p$ estimates.
We prove that certain types of measure-valued mappings are monokinetic i.e. the distribution of velocity is concentrated in a Dirac mass. These include weak measure-valued solutions to the strongly singular Cucker-Smale model with singularity of order $α$ greater or equal to the dimension of the ambient space. Consequently, we are able to answer a couple of open questions related to the singular Cucker-Smale model. First, we prove that weak measure-valued solutions to the strongly singular Cucker-Smale kinetic equation are monokinetic, under very mild assumptions that they are uniformly compac…
We derive a sufficient condition for asymptotic flocking in the Cucker-Smale model with self-delay (also called reaction delay) and with non-symmetric interaction weights. The condition prescribes smallness of the delay length relative to the decay rate of the inter-agent communication weight. The proof is carried out by a bootstrapping argument combining a decay estimate for the group velocity diameter with a variant of the Gronwall-Halanay inequality.
We develop a global wellposedness theory for weak solutions to the 1D Euler-alignment system with measure-valued density, bounded velocity, and locally integrable communication protocol. A satisfactory understanding of the low-regularity theory is an issue of pressing interest, as smooth solutions may lose regularity in finite time. However, no such theory currently exists except for a very special class of alignment interactions. We show that the dynamics of the 1D Euler-alignment system can be effectively described by a nonlocal scalar balance law, the entropy conditions of which serves as a…
We study the classical Cucker-Smale model in continuous time with a positive time delay $τ$. As in the non-delayed case, unconditional flocking occurs when $β\leq 1/2$ for every $τ>0$. Furthermore, we prove the exponential decay for the diameter of the velocities.
We present collective dynamics of the Cucker-Smale (C-S) ensemble under random communications. As an effective modeling of the C-S ensemble, we introduce a stochastic kinetic C-S equation with a multiplicative white noise. For the proposed stochastic kinetic model with a multiplicative noise, we present a global well-posedness of strong solutions and their asymptotic flocking dynamics, when initial datum is sufficiently regular, and communication weight function has a positive lower bound.
We analyse the asymptotic behavior for kinetic models describing the collective behavior of animal populations. We focus on models for self-propelled individuals, whose velocity relaxes toward the mean orientation of the neighbors. The self-propelling and friction forces together with the alignment and the noise are interpreted as a collision/interaction mechanism acting with equal strength. We show that the set of generalized collision invariants, introduced in \cite{DM08}, is equivalent in our setting to the more classical notion of collision invariants, i.e., the kernel of a suitably linear…
In this paper, we present the hydrodynamic limit of a multiscale system describing the dynamics of two populations of agents with alignment interactions and the effect of an internal variable. It consists of a kinetic equation coupled with an Euler-type equation inspired by the thermomechanical Cucker--Smale (TCS) model. We propose a novel drag force for the fluid-particle interaction reminiscent of Stokes' law. Whilst the macroscopic species is regarded as a self-organized background fluid that affects the kinetic species, the latter is assumed sparse and does not affect the macroscopic dynam…
We introduce a mean field game model for pedestrians moving in a given domain and choosing their trajectories so as to minimize a cost including a penalization on the difference between their own velocity and that of the other agents they meet. We prove existence of an equilibrium in a Lagrangian setting by using its variational structure, and then study its properties and regularity.
This note introduces a new method for establishing alignment in systems of collective behavior with degenerate communication protocol. The communication protocol consists of a kernel defining interaction between pairs of agents. Degeneracy presumes that the kernel vanishes in a region, which creates a zone of indifference. A motivating example is the case of a local kernel. Lapses in communication create a lack of coercivity in the energy estimates. Our approach is the construction of a corrector functional that compensates for this lack of coercivity. We obtain a series of new results: uncond…
In this work we study propagation of chaos for solutions of the Liouville equation for the classical discrete Cucker-Smale system. Assuming that the communication kernel satisfies the heavy tail condition -- known to be necessary to induce exponential alignment -- we obtain a linear in time convergence rate of the $k$-th marginals $f^{(k)}$ to the product of $k$ solutions of the corresponding Vlasov-Alignment equation, $f^{\otimes k}$. Specifically, the following estimate holds in terms of Wasserstein-2 metric \begin{equation}\label{e:abst} \mathcal{W}_2(f^{(k)}_t,f^{\otimes k}_t) \leq C k^{1/…
In this paper, we study the local well-posedness of two types of generalized Cucker-Smale (in short C-S) flocking models. We consider two different communication weights, singular and regular ones, with nonlinear coupling velocities $v|v|^{β-2}$ for $β> \frac{3-d}{2}$. For the singular communication weight, we choose $ψ^1(x) = 1/|x|^α$ with $α\in (0,d-1)$ and $β\geq 2$ in dimension $d > 1$. For the regular case, we select $ψ^2(x) \geq 0$ belonging to $(L_{loc}^\infty \cap \mbox{Lip}_{loc})(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and $β\in (\frac{3-d}{2},2)$. We also remark the various dynamics of C-S particle system f…
We consider a collective behavior model in which individuals try to imitate each others' velocity and have a preferred speed. We show that a phase change phenomenon takes place as diffusion decreases, bringing the system from a "disordered" to an "ordered" state. This effect is related to recently noticed phenomena for the diffusive Vicsek model. We also carry out numerical simulations of the system and give further details on the phase transition.
We analyze the one dimensional Cucker-Smale (in short CS) model with a weak singular communication weight $ψ(x) = |x|^{-β}$ with $β\in (0,1)$. We first establish a global-in-time existence of measure-valued solutions to the kinetic CS equation. For this, we use a proper change of variable to reformulate the particle CS model as a first-order particle system and provide the uniform-in-time stability for that particle system. We then extend this stability estimate for the singular CS particle system. By using that stability estimate, we construct the measure-valued solutions to the kinetic CS eq…
We establish the global existence of weak solutions to a class of kinetic flocking equations. The models under consideration include the kinetic Cucker-Smale equation with possibly non-symmetric flocking potential, the Cucker-Smale equation with additional strong local alignment, and a newly proposed model by Motsch and Tadmor. The main tools employed in the analysis are the velocity averaging lemma and the Schauder fixed point theorem along with various integral bounds.
We propose a family of compactly supported parametric interaction functions in the general Cucker-Smale flocking dynamics such that the mean-field macroscopic system of mass and momentum balance equations with non-local damping terms can be converted from a system of partial integro-differential equations to an augmented system of partial differential equations in a compact set. We treat the interaction functions as Green's functions for an operator corresponding to a semi-linear Poisson equation and compute the density and momentum in a translating reference frame, i.e. one that is taken in r…
In this note we study a new class of alignment models with self-propulsion and Rayleigh-type friction forces, which describes the collective behavior of agents with individual characteristic parameters. We describe the long time dynamics via a new method which allows to reduce analysis from the multidimensional system to a simpler family of two-dimensional systems parametrized by a proper Grassmannian. With this method we demonstrate exponential alignment for a large (and sharp) class of initial velocity configurations confined to a sector of opening less than $π$. In the case when characteris…
In this paper, we study the behavior of systems of individuals in confined environments that are driven by laws of self-organization. We propose that, under certain conditions, the long-term behavior of such systems will be global alignment. We study the result by Felipe Cucker and Steve Smale as well as their models describing the evolution of a flock in continuous and discrete time. Specifically, we will describe the models of Cucker-Smale on bounded domains $\mathbb{R}^+$ and on the interval $[a,b]$.
The paper examines the problems related to the well-posedness of the Cucker-Smale model with communication restricted to the $q$-closest neighbors, known also as the Cucker-Dong model. With agents oscillating on the boundary of different clusters, the system becomes difficult to precisely define, which leads to further problems with kinetic limits as the number of agents tends to infinity. We introduce the fuzzy $q$-closest system, which circumvents the issues with well-posedness. For such a system we prove a stability estimate for measure-valued solutions and perform the kinetic mean-field li…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Cucker--Smale flocking model coupled with an incompressible viscous non-Newtonian fluid, with the stress tensor of a power--law structure for $p\geq\frac{11}{5}$. The coupling is performed through a drag force on a periodic spatial domain $T^3$.

We discuss the Cucker-Smale's (C-S) particle model for flocking, deriving precise conditions for flocking to occur when pairwise interactions are sufficiently strong long range. We then derive a Vlasov-type kinetic model for the C-S particle model and prove it exhibits time-asymptotic flocking behavior for arbitrary compactly supported initial data. Finally, we introduce a hydrodynamic description of flocking based on the C-S Vlasov-type kinetic model and prove flocking behavior \emph{without} closure of higher moments.
