We discuss the Cucker-Smale's (C-S) particle model for flocking, deriving precise conditions for flocking to occur when pairwise interactions are sufficiently strong long range. We then derive a Vlasov-type kinetic model for the C-S particle model and prove it exhibits time-asymptotic flocking behavior for arbitrary compactly supported initial data. Finally, we introduce a hydrodynamic description of flocking based on the C-S Vlasov-type kinetic model and prove flocking behavior \emph{without} closure of higher moments.
We consider a hydrodynamic model of flocking-type with all-to-all interaction kernel in one-space dimension and establish global existence of entropy weak solutions with concentration to the Cauchy problem for any BV initial data that has finite total mass confined in a bounded interval and initial density uniformly positive therein. In addition, under a suitable condition on the initial data, we show that entropy weak solutions with concentration admit time-asymptotic flocking.
We establish the global existence of weak solutions to a class of kinetic flocking equations. The models under consideration include the kinetic Cucker-Smale equation with possibly non-symmetric flocking potential, the Cucker-Smale equation with additional strong local alignment, and a newly proposed model by Motsch and Tadmor. The main tools employed in the analysis are the velocity averaging lemma and the Schauder fixed point theorem along with various integral bounds.
We study the systems of Euler equations which arise from agent-based dynamics driven by velocity \emph{alignment}. It is known that smooth solutions of such systems must flock, namely -- the large time behavior of the velocity field approaches a limiting "flocking" velocity. To address the question of global regularity, we derive sharp critical thresholds in the phase space of initial configuration which characterize the global regularity and hence flocking behavior of such \emph{two-dimensional} systems. Specifically, we prove for that a large class of \emph{sub-critical} initial conditions s…
We prove the existence of weak solutions to kinetic flocking model with cut-off interaction function by using Schauder fixed pointed theorem and velocity averaging lemma. Under the natural assumption that the velocity support of the initial distribution function is bounded, we show that the velocity support of the distribution function is uniformly bounded in time. Employing this property, we remove the constraint in the paper of Karper, Mellet and Trivisa[SIAM. J. Math. Anal., (45)2013, pp.215-243] that the initial distribution function should have better integrability for large $|\bx|$.
The hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic Cucker-Smale model is investigated. In addition to the free-transport of individuals and the Cucker-Smale alignment operator, the model under consideration includes a strong local alignment term. This term was recently derived as the singular limit of an alignment operator due to Motsch and Tadmor. The model is enhanced with the addition of noise and a confinement potential. The objective of this work is the rigorous investigation of the singular limit corresponding to strong noise and strong local alignment. The proof relies on the relative entropy method a…
We study the large-time behavior of hydrodynamic model which describes the collective behavior of continuum of agents, driven by pairwise alignment interactions with additional external potential forcing. The external force tends to compete with alignment which makes the large time behavior very different from the original Cucker-Smale (CS) alignment model, and far more interesting. Here we focus on uniformly convex potentials. In the particular case of \emph{quadratic} potentials, we are able to treat a large class of admissible interaction kernels, $ϕ(r) \gtrsim (1+r^2)^{-β}$ with `thin' tai…
We study the large-time behavior of Eulerian systems augmented with non-local alignment. Such systems arise as hydrodynamic descriptions of agent-based models for self-organized dynamics, e.g., Cucker-Smale and Motsch-Tadmor models \cite{CS,MT}. We prove that in analogy with the agent-based models, the presence of non-local alignment enforces \emph{strong} solutions to self-organize into a macroscopic flock. This then raises the question of existence of such strong solutions. We address this question in one- and two-dimensional setups, proving global regularity for \emph{sub-critical} initial …
We analyse the asymptotic behavior for kinetic models describing the collective behavior of animal populations. We focus on models for self-propelled individuals, whose velocity relaxes toward the mean orientation of the neighbors. The self-propelling and friction forces together with the alignment and the noise are interpreted as a collision/interaction mechanism acting with equal strength. We show that the set of generalized collision invariants, introduced in \cite{DM08}, is equivalent in our setting to the more classical notion of collision invariants, i.e., the kernel of a suitably linear…
We study the large-time behavior of continuum alignment dynamics based on Cucker-Smale (CS)-type interactions which involve short-range kernels, that is, communication kernels with support much smaller than the diameter of the crowd. We show that if the amplitude of the interactions is larger than a finite threshold, then unconditional hydrodynamic flocking follows. Since we do not impose any regularity nor do we require the kernels to be bounded, the result covers both regular and singular interaction kernels. Moreover, we treat initial densities in the general class of compactly supported me…
We introduce a model for self-organized dynamics which, we argue, addresses several drawbacks of the celebrated Cucker-Smale (C-S) model. The proposed model does not only take into account the distance between agents, but instead, the influence between agents is scaled in term of their relative distance. Consequently, our model does not involve any explicit dependence on the number of agents; only their geometry in phase space is taken into account. The use of relative distances destroys the symmetry property of the original C-S model, which was the key for the various recent studies of C-S fl…
We consider a collective behavior model in which individuals try to imitate each others' velocity and have a preferred speed. We show that a phase change phenomenon takes place as diffusion decreases, bringing the system from a "disordered" to an "ordered" state. This effect is related to recently noticed phenomena for the diffusive Vicsek model. We also carry out numerical simulations of the system and give further details on the phase transition.
In two recent papers the authors study the existence of weak solutions and the hydrodynamic limit of kinetic flocking equations with strong local alignment. The introduction of a strong local alignment term to model flocking behavior was formally motivated in these papers as a limiting case of an alignment term proposed by Motsch and Tadmor. In this paper, we rigorously justify this limit, and show that the considered equation is indeed a limit of the Motsch-Tadmor model when the radius of interaction goes to zero. The analysis involves velocity averaging lemmas and several $L^p$ estimates.
We consider the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with local alignment as a mesoscopic description for the flocking dynamics. The local alignment was first proposed by Karper, Mellet and Trivisa \cite{K-M-T-3}, as a singular limit of a normalized non-symmetric alignment introduced by Motsch and Tadmor \cite{M-T-1}. The existence of weak solutions to this model is obtained in \cite{K-M-T-3}. The time-asymptotic flocking behavior is shown in this article. Our main contribution is to provide a rigorous derivation from mesoscopic to mascroscopic description for the Cucker-Smale flocking models. More prec…
We study the swarming behavior of hydrodynamic alignment. Alignment reflects steering towards a weighted average heading. We consider the class of so-called $p$-alignment hydrodynamics, based on $2p$-Laplacians, and weighted by a general family of symmetric communication kernels. The main new aspect here is the long time emergence behavior for a general class of pressure tensors without a closure assumption, beyond the mere requirement that they form an energy dissipative process. We refer to such pressure laws as `entropic', and prove the flocking of $p$-alignment hydrodynamics, driven by sin…
We study a hydrodynamic Cucker-Smale-type model with time delay in communication and information processing, in which agents interact with each other through normalized communication weights. The model consists of a pressureless Euler system with time delayed non-local alignment forces. We resort to its Lagrangian formulation and prove the existence of its global in time classical solutions. Moreover, we derive a sufficient condition for the asymptotic flocking behavior of the solutions. Finally, we show the presence of a critical phenomenon for the Eulerian system posed in the spatially one-d…
We study the long-time hydrodynamic behavior of systems of multi-species which arise from agent-based description of alignment dynamics. The interaction between species is governed by an array of symmetric communication kernels. We prove that the crowd of different species flock towards the mean velocity if (i) cross-interactions form a heavy-tailed connected array of kernels, while (ii) self-interactions are governed by kernels with singular heads. The main new aspect here, is that flocking behavior holds without closure assumption on the specific form of pressure tensors. Specifically, we pr…
In this note we reveal new classes of solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems governing collective behavior of flocks. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents, and are globally well-posed in multi-dimensional settings subject to a threshold condition similar to the one dimensional case. We develop the flocking and stability theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned velocity field. In the context of multi-scale models introduced in \cite{ST-multi} our solutions can be superimposed into Mikado formations -- c…
We are concerned with large-time behaviors of solutions for Vlasov--Navier--Stokes equations in two dimensions and Vlasov-Stokes system in three dimensions including the effect of velocity alignment/misalignment. We first revisit the large-time behavior estimate for our main system and refine assumptions on the dimensions and a communication weight function. In particular, this allows us to take into account the effect of the misalignment interactions between particles. We then use a sharp heat kernel estimate to obtain the exponential time decay of fluid velocity to its average in $L^\infty$-…
The hydrodynamic limit of a one dimensional kinetic model describing chemotaxis is investigated. The limit system is a conservation law coupled to an elliptic problem for which the macroscopic velocity is possibly discontinuous. Therefore, we need to work with measure-valued densities. After recalling a blow-up result in finite time of regular solutions for the hydrodynamic model, we establish a convergence result of the solutions of the kinetic model towards solutions of a problem limit defined thanks to the flux. Numerical simulations illustrate this convergence result.
This paper concerns a model for tumor cell migration through the surrounding extracellular matrix by considering mass balance phenomena involving the chemical interactions produced on the cell surface. The well-posedness of this model is proven. An asymptotic analysis via a suitable hydrodynamic limit completes the description of the macroscopic behaviour.
In this paper, we quantify the asymptotic limit of collective behavior kinetic equations arising in mathematical biology modeled by Vlasov-type equations with nonlocal interaction forces and alignment. More precisely, we investigate the hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic Cucker--Smale flocking model with confinement, nonlocal interaction, and local alignment forces, linear damping and diffusion in velocity. We first discuss the hydrodynamic limit of our main equation under strong local alignment and diffusion regime, and we rigorously derive the isothermal Euler equations with nonlocal forces. We…
This paper studies global existence, hydrodynamic limit, and large-time behavior of weak solutions to a kinetic flocking model coupled to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The model describes the motion of particles immersed in a Navier-Stokes fluid interacting through local alignment. We first prove the existence of weak solutions using energy and $L^p$ estimates together with the velocity averaging lemma. We also rigorously establish a hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong noise and local alignment. In this limit, the dynamics can be totally described by a coupled compressible…
A coupled system of self-organized hydrodynamics and Navier-Stokes equations (SOH-NS), which models self-propelled particles in a viscous fluid, was recently derived by Degond et al. \cite{DMVY-2017-arXiv}, starting from a micro-macro particle system of Vicsek-Navier-Stokes model, through an intermediate step of a self-organized kinetic-kinetic model by multiple coarse-graining processes. We first transfer SOH-NS into a non-singular system by stereographic projection, then prove the local in time well-posedness of classical solutions by energy method. Furthermore, employing the Hilbert expansi…
The self-organized hydrodynamic models can be derived from the kinetic version of the Vicsek model. The formal derivations and local well-posedness of the macroscopic equations are done by Degond and his collaborators. In this paper, we rigorously justify this hydrodynamic limit.
In this paper we study the hydrodynamic limit of a B.G.K. like kinetic model on domains with boundaries via $BV_{loc}$ theory. We obtain as a consequence existence results for scalar multidimensional conservation laws with kinetic boundary conditions. We require that the initial and boundary data satisfy the optimal assumptions that they all belong to $L^1\cap L^\infty$ with the additional regularity assumptions that the initial data are in $BV_{loc}$. We also extend our hydrodynamic analysis to the case of a generalized kinetic model to account for forces effects and we obtain as a consequenc…
