We rigorously show a large friction limit of hydrodynamic models with alignment, attractive, and repulsive effects. More precisely, we consider pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces and provide a quantitative estimate of large friction limit to a continuity equation with nonlocal velocity fields, which is often called an aggregation equation. Our main strategy relies on the relative entropy argument combined with the estimate of $p$-Wasserstein distance between densities.
We show that weak solutions of degenerate Navier-Stokes equations converge to the strong solutions of the pressureless Euler system with linear drag term, Newtonian repulsion and quadratic confinement. The proof is based on the relative entropy method using the artificial velocity formulation for the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes system.
We study the stability of Riemann solutions to pressureless Euler equations with Coulomb-like friction under the nonlinear approximation of flux functions with one parameter. The approximated system can be seen as the generalized Chaplygin pressure Aw-Rascle model with Coulomb-like friction, which is also equivalent to the nonsymmetric system of Keyfitz-Kranzer type with generalized Chaplygin pressure and Coulomb-like friction. Compared with the original system, The approximated system is strictly hyperbolic, which has one eigenvalue genuinely nonlinear and the other linearly degenerate. Hence…
We consider the kinetic Cucker-Smale model with local alignment as a mesoscopic description for the flocking dynamics. The local alignment was first proposed by Karper, Mellet and Trivisa \cite{K-M-T-3}, as a singular limit of a normalized non-symmetric alignment introduced by Motsch and Tadmor \cite{M-T-1}. The existence of weak solutions to this model is obtained in \cite{K-M-T-3}. The time-asymptotic flocking behavior is shown in this article. Our main contribution is to provide a rigorous derivation from mesoscopic to mascroscopic description for the Cucker-Smale flocking models. More prec…
We study an asymptotic limit of Vlasov type equation with nonlocal interaction forces where the friction terms are dominant. We provide a quantitative estimate of this large friction limit from the kinetic equation to a continuity type equation with a nonlocal velocity field, the so-called aggregation equation, by employing $2$-Wasserstein distance. By introducing an intermediate system, given by the pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces, we can quantify the error between the spatial densities of the kinetic equation and the pressureless Euler system by means of relative entropy ty…
We propose and study a nonlocal Euler system with relaxation, which tends to a strictly hyperbolic system under the hyperbolic scaling limit. An independent proof of the local existence and uniqueness of this system is presented in any spatial dimension. We further derive a precise critical threshold for this system in one dimensional setting. Our result reveals that such nonlocal system admits global smooth solutions for a large class of initial data. Thus, the nonlocal velocity regularizes the generic finite-time breakdown in the pressureless Euler system.
We rigorously derive pressureless Euler-type equations with nonlocal dissipative terms in velocity and aggregation equations with nonlocal velocity fields from Newton-type particle descriptions of swarming models with alignment interactions. We crucially make use of a discrete version of a modulated kinetic energy together with the bounded Lipschitz distance for measures in order to control terms in its time derivative due to the nonlocal interactions.
We study the critical thresholds for the compressible pressureless Euler equations with pairwise attractive or repulsive interaction forces and non-local alignment forces in velocity in one dimension. We provide a complete description for the critical threshold to the system without interaction forces leading to a sharp dichotomy condition between global in time existence or finite-time blow-up of strong solutions. When the interaction forces are considered, we also give a classification of the critical thresholds according to the different type of interaction forces. We also analyze condition…
In this paper, we quantify the asymptotic limit of collective behavior kinetic equations arising in mathematical biology modeled by Vlasov-type equations with nonlocal interaction forces and alignment. More precisely, we investigate the hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic Cucker--Smale flocking model with confinement, nonlocal interaction, and local alignment forces, linear damping and diffusion in velocity. We first discuss the hydrodynamic limit of our main equation under strong local alignment and diffusion regime, and we rigorously derive the isothermal Euler equations with nonlocal forces. We…
In this paper, we provide modulated interaction energy estimates for the kernel $K(x) = |x|^{-α}$ with $α\in (0,d)$, and its applications to quantified asymptotic analyses for kinetic equations. The proof relies on a dimension extension argument for an elliptic operator and its commutator estimates. For the applications, we first discuss the quantified small inertia limit of kinetic equation with singular nonlocal interactions. The aggregation equations with singular interaction kernels are rigorously derived. We also study the rigorous quantified hydrodynamic limit of the kinetic equation to …
We consider several pressureless variants of the compressible Euler equation driven by nonlocal repulsionattraction and alignment forces with Poisson interaction. Under an energy admissibility criterion, we prove existence of global measure-valued solutions, i.e., very weak solutions described by a classical Young measure together with appropriate concentration defects. We then investigate the evolution of a relative energy functional to compare a measure-valued solution to a regular solution emanating from the same initial datum. This leads to a (partial) weak-strong uniqueness principle.
We provide a quantitative asymptotic analysis for the nonlinear Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system with a large linear friction force and high force-fields. The limiting system is a diffusive model with nonlocal velocity fields often referred to as aggregation-diffusion equations. We show that a weak solution to the Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system strongly converges to a strong solution to the diffusive model. Our proof relies on the modulated macroscopic kinetic energy estimate based on the weak-strong uniqueness principle together with a careful analysis of the Poisson equation.
We study the pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal alignment interactions, which arises as a macroscopic representation of complex biological systems modeling animal flocks. For such Euler-Alignment system with bounded interactions, a critical threshold phenomenon is proved by Tadmor-Tan in 2014, where global regularity depends on initial data. With strongly singular interactions, global regularity is obtained by Do-Kiselev-Ryzhik-Tan in 2018, for all initial data. We consider the remaining case when the interaction is weakly singular. We show a critical threshold, similar to the system w…
We develop a global wellposedness theory for weak solutions to the 1D Euler-alignment system with measure-valued density, bounded velocity, and locally integrable communication protocol. A satisfactory understanding of the low-regularity theory is an issue of pressing interest, as smooth solutions may lose regularity in finite time. However, no such theory currently exists except for a very special class of alignment interactions. We show that the dynamics of the 1D Euler-alignment system can be effectively described by a nonlocal scalar balance law, the entropy conditions of which serves as a…
For the three-dimensional steady non-isentropic compressible Euler system with friction, we show existence of a class of symmetric subsonic, supersonic and transonic-shock solutions in a straight duct with constant square-section. Such flows are called Fanno flow in engineering. We formulate a boundary value problem for subsonic flows, and study their stability under multidimensional small perturbations of boundary conditions. Since the subsonic Euler system is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type, this is achieved by using the framework established in [L. Liu; G. Xu; H. Yuan: Stability…
Transonic shocks play a pivotal role in designation of supersonic inlets and ramjets. For the three-dimensional steady non-isentropic compressible Euler system with frictions, we had constructed a family of transonic shock solutions in rectilinear ducts with square cross-sections, and this paper is devoted to proving rigorously that almost all of these transonic shock solutions are stable, under multidimensional small perturbations of the upcoming supersonic flows and back pressures at the exits of ducts in suitable function spaces. This manifests that friction has a stabilization effect on tr…
In this paper we study a general class of hybrid mathematical models of collective motions of cells under the influence of chemical stimuli. The models are hybrid in the sense that cells are discrete entities given by ODE, while the chemoattractant is considered as a continuous signal which solves a diffusive equation. For this model we prove the mean-field limit in the Wasserstein distance to a system given by the coupling of a Vlasov-type equation with the chemoattractant equation. Our approach and results are not based on empirical measures, but rather on marginals of large number of indivi…
