We construct cohomology theories for $(φ, τ)$-modules, and study their relation with cohomology of $(φ, Γ)$-modules, as well as Galois cohomology. Our method is axiomatic, and can treat the étale case, the overconvergent case, and the rigid-overconvergent case simultaneously. We use recent advances in locally analytic cohomology as a key ingredient.
For a smooth scheme over a perfect field of characteristic p>0, we generalise a definition of Bloch and introduce overconvergent de Rham-Witt connections. This provides a tool to extend the comparison morphisms of Davis, Langer and Zink between overconvergent de Rham-Witt cohomology and Monsky-Washnitzer respectively rigid cohomology to coefficients.
In this article, we give examples of smooth varieties of positive characteristic whose first integral overconvergent de Rham-Witt cohomology modulo torsion is not finitely generated over the Witt ring of the base field.
We develop the (co)homological tools that make effective the construction of the quaternionic Darmon points introduced by Matthew Greenberg. In addition, we use the overconvergent cohomology techniques of Pollack--Pollack to allow for the efficient calculation of such points. Finally, we provide the first numerical evidence supporting the conjectures on their rationality.
We prove a universal coefficients theorem for the overconvergent cohomology modules introduced by Ash and Stevens, and give several applications. In particular, we sketch a very simple construction of eigenvarieties using overconvergent cohomology and prove many instances of a conjecture of Urban on the dimensions of these spaces. For example, when the underlying reductive group is an inner form of GL(2) over a quadratic imaginary extension of the rationals, the cuspidal component of the eigenvariety is a rigid analytic curve.
We generalize the functorial quasi-isomorphism in \cite{Davis2011} from overconvergent Witt de-Rham cohomology to rigid cohomology on smooth varieties over a finite field $k$, dropping the quasi-projectiveness condition. We do so by constructing an \et ale hypercover for any smooth scheme $X$, refined at each level to be a disjoint union of open standard smooth subschemes of $X$. We then find, for large $N$, an $N$-truncated closed embedding into a simplicial smooth scheme over $W(k)$, which allows us to use the results of \textit{loc. cit} at the simplicial level, and use cohomological descen…
Let $G'$ be a connected reductive group over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $G = G'/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is quasi-split, and let $Q \subset G$ be a parabolic subgroup. We introduce parahoric overconvergent cohomology groups with respect to $Q$, and prove a classicality theorem showing that the small slope parts of these groups coincide with those of classical cohomology. This allows the use of overconvergent cohomology at parahoric, rather than Iwahoric, level, and provides flexible lifting theorems that appear to be particularly well-adapted to arithmetic applications. When $Q$ is the Borel, we recover the …
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
The use of overconvergent cohomology in constructing $p$-adic $L$-functions, initiated by Stevens and Pollack--Stevens in the setting of classical modular forms, has now been established in a number of settings. The method is compatible with constructions of eigenvarieties by Ash--Stevens, Urban and Hansen, and is thus well-adapted to non-ordinary situations and variation in $p$-adic families. In this note, we give an exposition of the ideas behind the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions via overconvergent cohomology. Conditional on the non-abelian Leopoldt conjecture, we illustrate them by…
We construct a $(\mathfrak{gl}_2, B(\mathbb{Q}_p))$ and Hecke-equivariant cup product pairing between overconvergent modular forms and the local cohomology at $0$ of a sheaf on $\mathbb{P}^1$, landing in the compactly supported completed $\mathbb{C}_p$-cohomology of the modular curve. The local cohomology group is a highest-weight Verma module, and the cup product is non-trivial on a highest weight vector for any overconvergent modular form of infinitesimal weight not equal to $1$. For classical weight $k\geq 2$, the Verma has an algebraic quotient $H^1(\mathbb{P}^1, \mathcal{O}(-k))$, and on …
We construct the relative log de Rham-Witt complex. This is a generalization of the relative de Rham-Witt complex of Langer-Zink to log schemes. We prove the comparison theorem between the hypercohomology of the log de Rham-Witt complex and the relative log crystalline cohomology in certain cases. We construct the $p$-adic weight spectral sequence for relative proper strict semistable log schemes. When the base log scheme is a log point, We show it degenerates at $E_2$ after tensoring with the fraction field of the Witt ring. We also extend the definition of the overconvergent de Rham-Witt com…
In their paper which introduced Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology, Monsky and Washnitzer described conditions under which the definition can be adapted to give integral cohomology groups. It seems to be well-known among experts that their construction always gives well-defined integral cohomology groups, but this fact also does not appear to be explicitly written down anywhere. In this paper, we prove that the integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology groups are well-defined, for any nonsingular affine variety over a perfect field of characteristic p. We then compare these cohomology groups with overco…
Recently, Andreatta, Iovita and Pilloni have constructed spaces of overconvergent modular forms in characteristic p, together with a natural extension of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve over a compactified (adic) weight space. Similar ideas have also been used by Liu, Wan and Xiao to study the boundary of the eigencurve. This all goes back to an idea of Coleman. In this article, we construct natural extensions of eigenvarieties for arbitrary reductive groups G over a number field which are split at all places above p. If G is GL(2)/Q, then we obtain a new construction of the extended eigencurve o…
Let F be a non-archimedean local field. The construction of Lubin-Tate $(ϕ_q, Γ)$-modules attached to p-adic representations of $G_F$ depends on the choice of a uniformizer of F. In this paper, we give a description of a functor which relates categories of overconvergent Lubin-Tate $(ϕ_q, Γ)$-modules for different uniformizers. Further, we study this functor more explicitly for 2-dimensional trianguline representations.
We explain how to construct a cohomology theory on the category of separated quasi-compact smooth rigid spaces over $\mathbf{C}_p$ (or more general base fields), taking values in the category of vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve, which extends (in a suitable sense) Hyodo-Kato cohomology when the rigid space has a semi-stable proper formal model over the ring of integers of a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$. This cohomology theory factors through the category of rigid analytic motives of Ayoub.
Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that, if a cuspidal overconvergent Hilbert cuspidal form has small slopes under $U_p$-operators, then it is classical. Our method follows the original cohomological approach of Coleman. The key ingredient of the proof is giving an explicit description of the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fiber of the Hilbert modular variety. A byproduct of the proof is to show that, at least when $p$ is inert, of the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus has the same image as the classical forms in the Grothendieck group of Hecke …
We give a new proof of the slope classicality theorem in classical and higher Coleman theory for modular curves at arbitrary level using the completed cohomology classes attached to overconvergent modular forms. The latter give an embedding of the quotient of overconvergent modular forms by classical modular forms, which is the obstruction space for classicality in either cohomological degree, into a unitary representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. The $U_p$ operator becomes a double-coset, and unitarity yields the slope vanishing.
Using the overconvergent cohomology modules introduced by Ash and Stevens, we construct eigenvarieties associated with reductive groups and establish some basic geometric properties of these spaces, building on work of Ash-Stevens, Urban, and others. We also formulate a precise modularity conjecture linking trianguline Galois representations with overconvergent cohomology classes. In the course of giving evidence for this conjecture, we establish several new instances of \emph{p-}adic Langlands functoriality. Our main technical innovations are a family of universal coefficients spectral sequen…
We introduce a category of 'rigid spaces with overconvergent structure sheaf' which we call dagger spaces --- this is the correct category in which de Rham cohomology in rigid analysis should be studied. We compare it with the (usual) category of rigid spaces, give Serre and Poincaré duality theorems and explain the relation with Berthelot's rigid cohomology.
We construct the dagger realization functor for analytic motives over non-archimedean fields of mixed characteristic, as well as the Monsky-Washnitzer realization functor for algebraic motives over a discrete field of positive characteristic. In particular, the motivic language on the classic étale site provides a new direct definition of the overconvergent de Rham cohomology and rigid cohomology and shows that their finite dimensionality follows formally from the one of Betti cohomology for smooth projective complex varieties.

In this article we prove a semistable version of the variational Tate conjecture for divisors in crystalline cohomology, stating that a rational (logarithmic) line bundle on the special fibre of a semistable scheme over $k [\![ t ]\!]$ lifts to the total space if and only if its first Chern class does. The proof is elementary, using standard properties of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt complex. As a corollary, we deduce similar algebraicity lifting results for cohomology classes on varieties over global function fields. Finally, we give a counter example to show that the variational Tate conject…
We study the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus in some compact PEL Shimura varieties of type C with values in automorphic local systems and use it to prove a small slope criterion for classicality of overconvergent Hecke eigenforms. This generalises the work of Coleman, and is a first step in an ongoing project to extend the cohomological approach to classicality to higher-dimensional Shimura varieties.
Let $p$ be a prime, let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic $0$ with a perfect residue field of characteristic $p$, and let $G_K$ be the Galois group. Let $π$ be a fixed uniformizer of $K$, let $K_\infty$ be the extension by adjoining to $K$ a system of compatible $p^n$-th roots of $π$ for all $n$, and let $L$ be the Galois closure of $K_\infty$. Using these field extensions, Caruso constructs the $(φ, τ)$-modules, which classify $p$-adic Galois representations of $G_K$. In this paper, we study locally analytic vectors in some period rings with respect to the $p$-adic …
We show that the Galois cohomology groups of $p$-adic representations of a direct power of $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_p}/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ can be computed via the generalization of Herr's complex to multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules. Using Tate duality and a pairing for multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules we extend this to analogues of the Iwasawa cohomology. We show that all $p$-adic representations of a direct power of $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_p}/\mathbb{Q}_p)$ are overconvergent and, moreover, passing to overconvergent multivariable $(φ,Γ)$-modules is an equivalence of cate…
We construct noncommutative multidimensional versions of overconvergent power series rings and Robba rings. We show that the category of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules over certain completions of these rings are equivalent to the category of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules over the corresponding classical overconvergent, resp. Robba rings (hence also to the category of $p$-adic Galois representations of $\mathbb{Q}_p$). Moreover, in the case of Robba rings, the assumption of étaleness is not necessary, so there exists a notion of trianguline objects in this sense.
We prove an analogue for $p$-adic coefficients of the Deligne--Laumon theorem on local acyclicity for curves. That is, for an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal $E$ on a relative curve $f:U\rightarrow S$ admitting a good compactification, we show that the cohomology sheaves of $\mathbf{R}f_!E$ are overconvergent isocrystals if and only if $E$ has constant Swan conductor at infinity.
The goal of this work is to construct integral Chern classes and higher cycle classes for a smooth variety over a perfect field of characteristic p>0 that are compatible with the rigid Chern classes defined by Petrequin. The Chern classes we define have coefficients in the overconvergent de Rham-Witt complex of Davis, Langer and Zink and the construction is based on the theory of cycle modules discussed by Rost. We prove a comparison theorem in the case of a quasi-projective variety.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
We study the locally analytic vectors in the completed cohomology of modular curves and determine the eigenvectors of a rational Borel subalgebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$. As applications, we prove a classicality result for overconvergent eigenforms of weight one and give a new proof of the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture in the irregular case under some mild hypotheses. For an overconvergent eigenform of weight $k$, we show its corresponding Galois representation has Hodge-Tate-Sen weights $0,k-1$ and prove a converse result.
We give a new construction of $p$-adic overconvergent Hilbert modular forms by using Scholze's perfectoid Shimura varieties at infinite level and the Hodge--Tate period map. The definition is analytic, closely resembling that of complex Hilbert modular forms as holomorphic functions satisfying a transformation property under congruence subgroups. As a special case, we first revisit the case of elliptic modular forms, extending recent work of Chojecki, Hansen and Johansson. We then construct sheaves of geometric Hilbert modular forms, as well as subsheaves of integral modular forms, and vary ou…
The theory of $(φ_q,Γ)$-modules is a generalization of Fontaine's theory of $(φ,Γ)$-modules, which classifies $G_F$-representations on $\CO_F$-modules and $F$-vector spaces for any finite extension $F$ of $\BQ_p$. In this paper following Colmez's method we classify triangulable $\CO_F$-analytic $(φ_q,Γ)$-modules of rank 2. In this process we establish two kinds of cohomology theories for $\CO_F$-analytic $(φ_q,Γ)$-modules. Using them we show that, if $D$ is an $\CO_F$-analytic $(φ_q,Γ)$-module such that $D^{φ_q=1,Γ=1}=0$ i.e. $V^{G_F}=0$ where $V$ is the Galois representation attached to $D$, …
We develop local cohomology techniques to study the finite slope part of the coherent cohomology of Shimura varieties. The local cohomology groups we consider are a generalization of overconvergent modular forms, and they are defined by using a stratification on the Shimura variety obtained from the Bruhat stratification on a flag variety via the Hodge-Tate period map. We construct a spectral sequence from the local cohomologies to the classical cohomology and use it to obtain classicality and vanishing results. We also develop a theory of p-adic families and construct eigenvarieties. As an ap…
We study $p$-adic Hodge theory for families of Galois representations over pseudorigid spaces. Such spaces are non-archimedean analytic spaces which may be of mixed characteristic, and which arise naturally in the study of eigenvarieties at the boundary of weight space. We introduce perfect and imperfect overconvergent period rings, and we use the Tate--Sen method to construct overconvergent $(φ, Γ)$-modules for Galois representations over pseudorigid spaces.
Using a local construction from a previous paper, we exhibit a numerical invariant, the differential Swan conductor, for an isocrystal on a variety over a perfect field of positive characteristic overconvergent along a boundary divisor; this leads to an analogous construction for certain p-adic and l-adic representations of the etale fundamental group of a variety. We then demonstrate some variational properties of this definition for overconvergent isocrystals, paying special attention to the case of surfaces.
Let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ and let $G_K = \mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbf{Q}}_p/K)$. There is a very useful classification of $p$-adic representations of $G_K$ in terms of cyclotomic $(φ,Γ)$-modules (cyclotomic means that $Γ={\rm Gal}(K_\infty/K)$ where $K_\infty$ is the cyclotomic extension of $K$). One particularly convenient feature of the cyclotomic theory is the fact that any $(φ,Γ)$-module is overconvergent. Questions pertaining to the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence lead us to ask for a generalization of the theory of $(φ,Γ)$-modules, with the cyclotomic extension…
Berger and Colmez introduced a theory of families of overconvergent étale (Phi,Gamma)-modules associated to families of p-adic Galois representations over p-adic Banach algebras. However, in contrast with the classical theory of (Phi,Gamma)-modules, the functor they obtain is not an equivalence of categories. In this paper, we prove that when the base is an affinoid space, every family of (overconvergent) étale (Phi,Gamma)-modules can locally be converted into a family of p-adic representations in a unique manner, providing the "local" equivalence. There is a global mod p obstruction related t…
Let $V$ be a complete discrete valued ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$, $K$ its field of fractions, $k$ its residue field which is supposed to be perfect. Let $X$ be a separated $k$-scheme of finite type and $Y$ be a smooth open of $X$. We check that the equivalence of categories $sp_{(Y,X),+}$ (from the category of overconvergent isocrystals on $(Y,X)/K$ to that of overcoherent isocrystals on $(Y,X)/K$) commutes with tensor products. Next, in Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $\mathcal{D}$-modules, we prove the stability under tensor products of the devissability in overconvergent isocryst…
We investigate the relation between p-adic Galois representations and overconvergent (phi,Gamma)-modules in families. Especially we construct a natural open subspace of a family of (phi,Gamma)-modules, over which it is induced by a family of Galois-representations.
The goal of this article is to prove a comparison theorem between rigid cohomology and cohomology computed using the theory of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. To do this, we construct a specialisation functor from Le Stum's category of constructible isocrystals to the derived category of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. For objects `of Frobenius type', we show that the essential image of this functor consists of overholonomic $\mathscr{D}^\dagger$-modules, and lies inside the heart of the dual constructible t-structure. We use this to give a more global construction of Caro's specialisation…
We prove that, for adic étale motives over $\mathbb{C}_p$, the vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve arising from their Hyodo-Kato cohomology coincide with their de Rham-Fargues-Fontaine cohomologies, where the latter provides an overconvergent refinement of crystalline vector bundles, albeit constructed on the generic fiber. This equivalence is established in the setting of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories and respects the full motivic structure. Furthermore, we enrich both realizations with Galois actions, yielding $G_{\breve{\mathbb{Q}}_{p}}$-equivariant solid quasi-coherent sh…
For varieties over a perfect field of characteristic p, etale cohomology with Q_l-coefficients is a Weil cohomology theory only when l is not equal to p; the corresponding role for l = p is played by Berthelot's rigid cohomology. In that theory, the coefficient objects analogous to lisse l-adic sheaves are the overconvergent F-isocrystals. This expository article is a brief user's guide for these objects, including some features shared with l-adic cohomology (purity, weights) and some features exclusive to the p-adic case (Newton polygons, convergence and overconvergence). The relationship bet…
Let $p$ be a prime, $K$ a finite extension of $\mathbb Q_p$, and let $G_K$ be the absolute Galois group of $K$. The category of étale $(φ, τ)$-modules is equivalent to the category of $p$-adic Galois representations of $G_K$. In this paper, we show that all étale $(φ, τ)$-modules are overconvergent; this answers a question of Caruso. Our result is an analogy of the classical overconvergence result of Cherbonnier and Colmez in the setting of étale $(φ, Γ)$-modules. However, our method is completely different from theirs. Indeed, we first show that all $p$-power-torsion representations admit loo…
We construct various explicit Herr complexes that compute the Galois cohomology of a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group of a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic $0$ with a perfect residue field of characteristic $p$, using the associated $(φ,τ)$-modules (defined by Xavier Caruso), instead of $(φ,Γ)$-modules. We also give an application to $p$-divisible groups.
We propose in this paper an approach to Breuil's conjecture on a Langlands correspondence between $p$-adic Galois representations and representations of $p$-adic Lie groups in $p$-adic topological vector spaces. We suggest that Berthelot's theory of arithmetic $D$-modules should give a $p$-adic analogue of Kashiwara's theory of $D$-modules for real Lie groups i.e. it should give a realization of the $p$-adic representations of a $p$-adic Lie group as spaces of overconvergent solutions of arithmetic $D$-modules which will come equipped with an action of the Galois group. We shall discuss the ca…
