The theory of $(φ_q,Γ)$-modules is a generalization of Fontaine's theory of $(φ,Γ)$-modules, which classifies $G_F$-representations on $\CO_F$-modules and $F$-vector spaces for any finite extension $F$ of $\BQ_p$. In this paper following Colmez's method we classify triangulable $\CO_F$-analytic $(φ_q,Γ)$-modules of rank 2. In this process we establish two kinds of cohomology theories for $\CO_F$-analytic $(φ_q,Γ)$-modules. Using them we show that, if $D$ is an $\CO_F$-analytic $(φ_q,Γ)$-module such that $D^{φ_q=1,Γ=1}=0$ i.e. $V^{G_F}=0$ where $V$ is the Galois representation attached to $D$, then any overconvergent extension of the trivial representation of $G_F$ by $V$ is $\CO_F$-analytic. In particular, contrarily to the case of $F=\BQ_p$, there are representations of $G_F$ that are not overconvergent.
We relate the study of Landau-Siegel zeros to the ranks of Jacobians $J_0(q)$ of modular curves for large primes $q$. By a conjecture of Brumer-Murty, the rank should be equal to half of the dimension. Equivalently, almost all newforms of weight two and level $q$ have analytic rank $\leq 1$. We show that either Landau-Siegel zeros do not exist, or that almost all such newforms have analytic rank $\leq 2$. In particular, almost all odd newforms have analytic rank equal to one. Additionally, for a sparse set of primes $q$ we show the rank of $J_0(q)$ is asymptotically equal to the rank predicted…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then, we show that the average analytic rank of $E$ over cyclic extensions of degree $l$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $l$ a prime not equal to $2$, is at most $2+r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$, where $r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$ is the analytic rank of the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. This bound is independent of the degree $l$ Also, we also obtain some average analytic rank results over $S_d$-fields.
We show that average analytic rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion $G$ is bounded for every torsion group $G$ under GRH for elliptic curve $L$-functions.
In this paper, under GRH for elliptic $L$-functions, we give an upper bound for the probability for an elliptic curve with analytic rank $\leq a$ for $a \geq 11$, and also give an upper bound of $n$-th moments of analytic ranks of elliptic curves. These are applications of counting elliptic curves with local conditions, for example, having good reduction at $p$.
The parity of the analytic rank of an elliptic curve is given by the root number in the functional equation L(E,s). Fixing an elliptic curve over any number field and considering the family of its quadratic twists, it is natural to ask what the average analytic rank in this family is. A lower bound on this number is given by the average root number. In this paper, we investigate the root number in such families and derive an asymptotic formula for the proportion of curves in the family that have even rank. Our results are then used to support a conjecture about the average analytic rank in thi…
We describe a method for bounding the rank of an elliptic curve under the assumptions of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture and the generalized Riemann hypothesis. As an example, we compute, under these conjectures, exact upper bounds for curves which are known to have rank at least as large as 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24. For the known curve of rank at least 28, we get a bound of 30.
We describe an algorithm to prove the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula for any given elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers of analytic rank zero or one. With computer assistance we have proved the formula for 16714 of the 16725 such curves of conductor less than 5000.
All the results in this paper are conditional on the Riemann Hypothesis for the L-functions of elliptic curves. Under this assumption, we show that the average analytic rank of all elliptic curves over Q is at most 2, thereby improving a result of Brumer. We also show that the average within any family of quadratic twists is at most 3/2, improving a result of Goldfeld. A third result concerns the density of curves with analytic rank at least R, and shows that the proportion of such curves decreases faster than exponentially as R grows. The proofs depend on an analogue of Weil's ``explicit form…
This is the first of a series of articles providing a foundation for the theory of Drinfeld modular forms of arbitrary rank r. In the present part, we develop the analytic theory. Most of the work goes into defining and studying the u-expansion of a weak Drinfeld modular form, whose coefficients are weak Drinfeld modular forms of rank r-1. Based on that we give a precise definition of when a weak Drinfeld modular form is holomorphic at infinity and thus a Drinfeld modular form in the proper sense.
We prove that, when all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ are ordered by naive height, a positive proportion have both algebraic and analytic rank one. It follows that the average rank and the average analytic rank of elliptic curves are both strictly positive.
Given $F$ a totally real field and $E_{/F}$ a modular elliptic curve, we denote by $G_5(E_{/F};X)$ the number of quintic extensions $K$ of $F$ such that the norm of the relative discriminant is at most $X$ and the analytic rank of $E$ grows over $K$, i.e., $r_\mathrm{an}(E/K)>r_\mathrm{an}(E/F)$. We show that $G_5(E_{/F};X)\asymp_{+\infty} X$ when the elliptic curve $E_{/F}$ has odd conductor and at least one prime of multiplicative reduction. As Bhargava, Shankar and Wang \cite{BSW} showed that the number of quintic extensions of $F$ with norm of the relative discriminant at most $X$ is asymp…
We study the variation of the dimension of the Bloch-Kato Selmer group of a p-adic Galois representation of a number field that varies in a refined family. We show that, if one restricts ourselves to representations that are, at every place dividing $p$, crystalline, non-critically refined, and with a fixed number of non-negative Hodge-Tate weights, then the dimension of the Selmer group varies essentially lower-semi-continuously. This allows to prove lower bounds for Selmer groups "by continuity", in particular to prove some predictions of the conjecture of Bloch-Kato for modular forms.
A tensor defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ has low analytic rank if the distribution of its values differs significantly from the uniform distribution. An order $d$ tensor has partition rank 1 if it can be written as a product of two tensors of order less than $d$, and it has partition rank at most $k$ if it can be written as a sum of $k$ tensors of partition rank 1. In this paper, we prove that if the analytic rank of an order $d$ tensor is at most $r$, then its partition rank is at most $f(r,d,|\mathbb{F}|)$. Previously, this was known with $f$ being an Ackermann-type function in $r$ …
For nonzero rational D, which may be taken to be a squarefree integer, let E_D be the elliptic curve Dy^2=x^3-x over Q arising in the "congruent number" problem. It is known that the L-function of E_D has sign -1, and thus odd analytic rank, if and only if |D| is congruent to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8. For such D, we expect by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer that the arithmetic rank of each of these curves E_D is odd, and therefore positive. We prove that E_D has positive rank for each D such that |D| is in one of the above congruence classes mod 8 and also satisfies |D|<10^6. Our proof is …
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be a semistable elliptic curve such that $\mathrm{ord}_{s=1}L(E,s) = 1$. We prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/\mathbb{Q}$ for each prime $p \geq 5$ of good reduction such that $E[p]$ is irreducible: $$ \mathrm{ord}_p \left (\frac{L'(E,1)}{Ω_E\cdot\mathrm{Reg}(E/\mathbb{Q})} \right ) = \mathrm{ord}_p \left (\#\mathrm{Sha}(E/\mathbb{Q})\prod_{\ell\leq \infty} c_\ell(E/\mathbb{Q}) \right ). $$ This formula also holds for $p=3$ provided $a_p(E)=0$ if $E$ has supersingular reduction at $p$.
It is shown that for any subspace $V\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^{n\times\cdots\times n}$ of $d$-tensors, if $\dim(V) \geq tn^{d-1}$, then there is subspace $W\subseteq V$ of dimension at least $t/(dr) - 1$ whose nonzero elements all have analytic rank $Ω_{d,p}(r)$. As an application, we generalize a result of Altman on Szemerédi's theorem with random differences.
The goal of this paper is to explain how a simple but apparently new fact of linear algebra together with the cohomological interpretation of L-functions allows one to produce many examples of L-functions over function fields vanishing to high order at the center point of their functional equation. The main application is that for every prime p and every integer g>0 there are absolutely simple abelian varieties of dimension g over Fp(t) for which the BSD conjecture holds and which have arbitrarily large rank.
In this paper, we prove that if the analytic rank of an order $d$ tensor is at most $r$, then its partition rank is at most $f(r,d,|\mathbb{F}|)$, where, for fixed $d$ and $\mathbb{F}$, $f$ is a polynomial in $r$. This is a…
We establish a conditional equivalence between quantitative unboundedness of the analytic rank of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$ and the existence of highly biased elliptic curve prime number races. We show that conditionally on a Riemann Hypothesis and on a hypothesis on the multiplicity of the zeros of $L(E,s)$, large analytic ranks translate into an extreme Chebyshev bias. Conversely, we show under a certain linear independence hypothesis on zeros of $L(E,s)$ that if highly biased elliptic curve prime number races do exist, then the Riemann Hypothesis holds for infinitely many elliptic cu…
We prove a p-adic analogue of Wüstholz's analytic subgroup theorem. We apply this result to show that a curve embedded in its Jacobian intersects the p-adic closure of the Mordell-Weil group transversely whenever the latter has rank equal to 1. This allows us to give some theoretical justification to Chabauty techniques applied to finding rational points on curves whose Jacobian has Mordel-Weil group of rank 1.
We prove an asymptotic expansion of the second moment of the central values of the $\mathrm{GL}(n)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$ Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions $L(1/2,π\otimesπ_0)$, for a fixed cuspidal automorphic representation $π_0$, over the family of $π$ with analytic conductors bounded by a quantity which is tending off to infinity. Our proof uses the integral representations of the $L$-functions, period with regularized Eisenstein series, and the invariance properties of the analytic newvectors.
For an elliptic curve over Q of analytic rank 1, we use the level-two Selmer variety and secondary cohomology products to find explicit analytic defining equations for global integral points inside the set of p-adic points.
Fix an elliptic curve $E/\Q$, and assume the generalized Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-function $ L(E_D, s) $ for every quadratic twist $E_D$ of $E$ by $D\in\Z$. We combine Weil's explicit formula with techniques of Heath-Brown to derive an asymptotic upper bound for the weighted moments of the analytic rank of $E_D$. It follows from this that, for any unbounded increasing function $f$ on $\R$, the analytic rank and (assuming in addition the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture) the number of integral points of $E_D$ are less than $f(D)$ for almost all $D$. We also derive an upper bound for the d…

Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of conductor $N$ having analytic rank zero, i.e., such that the $L$-function $L_E(s)$ of $E$ does not vanish at $s=1$. Suppose there is another optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of the same conductor $N$ whose Mordell-Weil rank is greater than zero and whose associated newform is congruent to the newform associated to $E$ modulo an integer $r$. The theory of visibility then shows that under certain additional hypotheses, $r$ divides the product of the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $E$ and the orders of the arithmetic component groups of $E…
Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of conductor $N$ having analytic rank one, i.e., such that the $L$-function $L_E(s)$ of $E$ vanishes to order one at $s=1$. Let $K$ be a quadratic imaginary field in which all the primes dividing $N$ split and such that the $L$-function of $E$ over $K$ vanishes to order one at $s=1$. Suppose there is another optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of the same conductor $N$ whose Mordell-Weil rank is greater than one and whose associated newform is congruent to the newform associated to $E$ modulo an integer $r$. The theory of visibility then shows that u…
Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2$, square-free level and trivial character, let $A_f$ be the abelian variety attached to $f$ and for every good ordinary prime $p$ for $f$ let $\boldsymbol f^{(p)}$ be the $p$-adic Hida family through $f$. We prove that, for all but finitely many primes $p$ as above, if $A_f$ is an elliptic curve such that $A_f(\mathbb Q)$ has rank $1$ and the $p$-primary part of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $A_f$ over $\mathbb Q$ is finite then all specializations of $\boldsymbol f^{(p)}$ of weight congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$ and trivial character have finite ($p$-primar…
We study the low-lying zeros of various interesting families of elliptic curve L-functions. One application is an upper bound on the average analytic rank of the family of all elliptic curves. The upper bound obtained is less than two, which implies that a positive proportion of elliptic curves over the rationals have algebraic rank equal to analytic rank and finite Tate-Shafarevich group. These results are conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis.
For each positive integer $r$, we construct a nowhere-vanishing, single-cuspidal Drinfeld modular form for $\GL_r(\FF_q[θ])$, necessarily of least possible weight, via determinants using rigid analytic trivializations of the universal Drinfeld module of rank $r$ and deformations of vectorial Eisenstein series. Along the way, we deduce that the cycle class map from de Rham cohomology to Betti cohomology is an isomorphism for Drinfeld modules of all ranks over $\FF_q[θ]$.
Let $π=\otimesπ_{v}$ and $π^{\prime}=\otimesπ_{v}^{\prime}$ be two irreducible, automorphic, cuspidal representations of $GL_{m}(\mathbb{A}_{K}) >.$ Using the logarithmic zero-free region of Rankin-Selberg $L$-function, Moreno established the analytic strong multiplicity one theorem if at least one of them is self-contragredient, i.e. $π$ and $π^{\prime}$ will be equal if they have finitely many same local components $π_{v},π_{v}^{\prime},$ for which the norm of places are bounded polynomially by the analytic conductor of these cuspidal representations. Without the assumption of the self-contr…
Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve of conductor $N$, such that the $L$-function of $E$ vanishes to order one at $s=1$. Let $K$ be a quadratic imaginary field in which all the primes dividing $N$ split and such that the $L$-function of $E$ over $K$ also vanishes to order one at $s=1$. In view of the Gross-Zagier theorem, the second part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture says that the index in $E(K)$ of the subgroup generated by the Heegner point is equal to the product of the Manin constant of $E$, the Tamagawa numbers of $E$, and the square root of the order of the Shafarevich-Tate…
In this article we shall study the analytic theory and the representation theoretic interpretations of Hankel transforms and fundamental Bessel kernels of an arbitrary rank over an archimedean field.
Let A be an abelian variety over a number field K. An identity between the L-functions L(A/K_i,s) for extensions K_i of K induces a conjectural relation between the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer quotients. We prove these relations modulo finiteness of Sha, and give an analogous statement for Selmer groups. Based on this, we develop a method for determining the parity of various combinations of ranks of A over extensions of K. As one of the applications, we establish the parity conjecture for elliptic curves assuming finiteness of Sha[6^\infty] and some restrictions on the reduction at primes above 2 a…
This is the second of a series of articles providing a foundation for the theory of Drinfeld modular forms of arbitrary rank. In the present part, we compare the analytic theory with the algebraic one that was begun in a paper of the third author. For any arithmetic congruence subgroup and any integral weight we establish an isomorphism between the space of analytic modular forms with the space of algebraic modular forms defined in terms of the Satake compactification. From this we deduce the important result that this space is finite dimensional.
For a smooth, projective, complex algebraic variety $X$, the Riemann--Hilbert correspondence establishes a complex analytic isomorphism between the `Betti moduli space' of rank $n$ local systems on $X^\mathrm{an}$ and the `de Rham moduli space' of rank $n$ vector bundles with flat connection on $X$. In the rank one case, C. Simpson precisely characterizes the subvarieties of these moduli spaces that are `bi-algebraic' for this typically transcendental, analytic isomorphism. In this short note, we give a new proof of this characterization of Simpson, using methods from o-minimal geometry. We ad…
Following D. Ramakrishnan, we explain how L. Lafforgue's modularity theorem and an analytic theorem of H. Jacquet and J. Shalika can be applied to prove the following result related to the Tate Conjecture: for a smooth, projective, geometrically-connected variety defined over a global function field, the algebraic rank is less than or equal to the analytic rank. Also discussed is the analogous (open) question for number fields and an easy extension of Lafforgue's theorem to remove the "finite-order character" assumption. All results are likely "known to the experts", but don't appear to be wri…
Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang i…
We define and investigate real analytic weak Jacobi forms of degree 1 and arbitrary rank. En route we calculate the Casimir operator associated to the maximal central extension of the real Jacobi group, which for rank exceeding 1 is of order 4. In ranks exceeding 1, the notions of H-harmonicity and semi-holomorphicity are the same.
