For nonzero rational D, which may be taken to be a squarefree integer, let E_D be the elliptic curve Dy^2=x^3-x over Q arising in the "congruent number" problem. It is known that the L-function of E_D has sign -1, and thus odd analytic rank, if and only if |D| is congruent to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8. For such D, we expect by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer that the arithmetic rank of each of these curves E_D is odd, and therefore positive. We prove that E_D has positive rank for each D such that |D| is in one of the above congruence classes mod 8 and also satisfies |D|<10^6. Our proof is computational: we use the modular parametrization of E_1 or E_2 to construct a rational point P_D on each E_D from CM points on modular curves, and compute P_D to enough accuracy to usually distinguish it from any of the rational torsion points on E_D. In the 1375 cases in which we cannot numerically distinguish P_D from a torsion point of E_D, we surmise that P_D is in fact a torsion point but that E_D has rank 3, and prove that the rank is positive by searching for and finding a non-torsion rational point. We also report on the conjectural extension to |D|<10^7 of the list of curves E_D whose analytic rank is odd and greater than 1, which raises several new questions.
We define two-parameter generalizations of Andrews' $(k+1)$-marked odd Durfee symbols and $2k$th symmetrized odd rank moments, and study the automorphic properties of some of their generating functions. When $k=0$ we obtain families of modular forms and mock modular forms. When $k \geq 1$, we find quasimodular forms and quasimock modular forms.
Using quasimodular forms with respect to $Γ_0(4)$ we find exact relations between the M2-rank for partitions without repeated odd parts and three residual cranks. From these identities we are able to deduce various congruences mod 3 and 5 between the rank and crank moments. In turn, these congruences give congruences for $M2spt(n)$, the number of occurrences of smallest parts in the partitions of $n$ with smallest part even and without repeated odd parts, and for the higher order analog $M2spt_2(n)$.
We compute an asymptotic estimate for odd balanced unimodal sequences for ranks congruent to $a \pmod{c}$ for $c\neq 1$ odd. We find the interesting result that the odd balanced unimodal sequences are asymptotically related to the overpartition function. This is in contrast to strongly unimodal sequences which, are asymptotically related to the partition function.
We give asymptotic expansions for the moments of the $M_2$-rank generating function and for the $M_2$-rank generating function at roots of unity. For this we apply the Hardy-Ramanujan circle method extended to mock modular forms. Our formulas for the $M_2$-rank at roots of unity lead to asymptotics for certain combinations of $N2(r,m,n)$ (the number of partitions without repeated odd parts of $n$ with $M_2$-rank congruent to $r$ modulo $m$). This allows us to deduce inequalities among certain combinations of $N2(r,m,n)$. In particular, we resolve a few conjectured inequalities of Mao.
By work of Bringmann, Ono, and Rhoades it is known that the generating function of the $M_2$-rank of partitions without repeated odd parts is the so-called holomorphic part of a certain harmonic Maass form. Here we improve the standing of this function as a harmonic Maass form and show more can be done with this function. In particular we show the related harmonic Maass form transforms like the generating function for partitions without repeated odd parts (which is a modular form). We then use these improvements to determine formulas for the rank differences modulo $7$. Additionally we give id…
Let $N^{0}(m,n)$ be the number of odd Durfee symbols of $n$ with odd rank $m$, and $N^{0}(a,M;n)$ be the number of odd Durfee symbols of $n$ with odd rank congruent to $a$ modulo $M$. We give explicit formulas for the generating functions of $N^{0}(a,M;n)$ and their $\ell$-dissections where $0\le a \le M-1$ and $M, \ell \in \{2, 4, 8\}$. From these formulas, we obtain some interesting arithmetic properties of $N^{0}(a,M;n)$. Furthermore, let $\mathcal{D}_{k}^{0}(n)$ denote the number of $k$-marked odd Durfee symbols of $n$. Andrews (2007) conjectured that $\mathcal{D}_{2}^{0}(n)$ is even if $n…
We prove formulas for the generating functions for M_2-rank differences for partitions without repeated odd parts. These formulas are in terms of modular forms and generalized Lambert series.
We consider the symmetrized moments of three ranks and cranks, similar to the work of Garvan for the rank and crank of a partition. By using Bailey pairs and elementary rearrangements, we are able to find useful expressions for these moments. We then deduce inequalities between the corresponding ordinary moments. In particular we prove that the crank moment for overpartitions is always larger than the rank moment for overpartitions; with recent asymptotics this was known to hold for sufficiently large values of n for each fixed k. Lastly we provide higher order spt functions for overpartitions…
A sieve is constructed for twin primes at distance 4, which are of the form 3(2m+1)+/-2, and are characterized by their twin-4 rank 2m+1. It has no parity problem. Non-ranks are identified as all other odd numbers and counted using odd primes p>=5. Twin-4 ranks and non-ranks make up the set of odd numbers. Regularities of non-ranks allow gathering information on them to obtain a Legendre-type sum for the number of twin-4 ranks. Due to considerable cancellations in it, the asymptotic law of its main term has the expected form and magnitude of its coefficient.
In this paper, we prove the Iwasawa main conjecture for elliptic curves at an odd supersingular prime p. Some consequences are the p-parts of the leading term formulas in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures for analytic rank 0 or 1.
Several discrete geometry problems are closely related to the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves defined on the rational fields $\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper we consider the $θ$-congruent number for $θ=\fracπ{3}$ and $\frac{2π}{3}$ and tiling number n. For the case that $n\geqslant 2$ is square-free odd integer, we determine all $n$ such that the Selmer rank of elliptic curve $E_{n,\fracπ{3}}:\ y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)$ or/and $E_{n,\frac{2π}{3}}:\ y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n)$ is zero. From this, we provide several series of non $θ$-congruent numbers for $θ=\fracπ{3}$ and $\frac{2π}{3}$, and non tiling numbers n…
Sieves are constructed for twin primes in class I, which are of the form 2m+/-D, D>=3 odd. They are characterized by their twin-D-I rank m. They have no parity problem. Non-rank numbers are identified and counted using odd primes p>=5. Twin-D-I ranks and non-ranks make up the set of positive integers. Regularities of non-ranks allow obtaining the number of twin-D-I ranks. It involves considerable cancellations so that the asymptotic form of its main term collapses to the expected form, but its coefficient depends on D.
We obtain lower bounds for Selmer ranks of elliptic curves over dihedral extensions of number fields. Suppose $K/k$ is a quadratic extension of number fields, $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $k$, and $p$ is an odd prime. Let $F$ denote the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $K$ that is unramified at all primes where $E$ has bad reduction and that is Galois over $k$ with dihedral Galois group (i.e., the generator $c$ of $Gal(K/k)$ acts on $Gal(F/K)$ by -1). We prove (under mild hypotheses on $p$) that if the rank of the pro-$p$ Selmer group $S_p(E/K)$ is odd, then the rank of $S_p(E/L)$ is …
In this paper, $p$ and $q$ are two different odd primes. First, We construct the congruent elliptic curves corresponding to $p$, $2p$, $pq$, and $2pq,$ then, in the cases of congruent numbers, we determine the rank of the corresponding congruent elliptic curves.
Let $n$ be a positive square-free integer, where every odd prime factor of $n$ has form $8a\pm 1$. We determine when $n$ is non-congruent with second minimal $2$-primary Shafarevich-Tate group, in terms of the $4$-ranks of class groups and a Jacobi symbol. In particular, when every odd prime factor of $n$ has form $8a+1$, this condition is equivalent to the vanishing of the $4$-rank of the tame kernel of $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{n})$ for odd $n$, or $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-n})$ for even $n$. This generalizes previous results.
We show that for $100\%$ of the odd, squarefree integers $n > 0$ the $4$-rank of $\text{Cl}(\mathbb{Q}(i, \sqrt{n}))$ is equal to $ω_3(n) - 1$, where $ω_3$ is the number of prime divisors of $n$ that are $3$ modulo $4$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with good reduction at a fixed odd prime $p$ and $K$ an imaginary quadratic field where $p$ splits. We give a growth estimate for the Mordell-Weil rank of $E$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$.
This is an announcement of results on rank-one Eisenstein cohomology of GL(N), with N > 1 an odd integer, and algebraicity theorems for ratios of successive critical values of certain Rankin-Selberg L-functions for GL(n) x GL(n') when n is even and n' is odd.
If an integer $n$ is written as a sum of two biquadrates in two different ways, then the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3-nx$ has rank $\geq 3$. If moreover $n$ is odd and the parity conjecture is true, then it has even rank $\geq 4$. Finally, some examples of ranks equal to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, are also obtained.
Let $d$ be an odd square-free integer and $ζ_8$ a primitive $8$-th root of unity. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rank of the $2$-class group of the fields $L_d=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_8,\sqrt{d})$.
Let $n\geq 3$ be an integer and $d$ an odd square-free integer. We shall compute the rank of the $2$-class group of $L_{n,d}:=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{2^n},\sqrt{d})$, when all the prime divisors of $d$ are congruent to $\pm 3\pmod 8$ or $9\pmod{16}$.
We relate the study of Landau-Siegel zeros to the ranks of Jacobians $J_0(q)$ of modular curves for large primes $q$. By a conjecture of Brumer-Murty, the rank should be equal to half of the dimension. Equivalently, almost all newforms of weight two and level $q$ have analytic rank $\leq 1$. We show that either Landau-Siegel zeros do not exist, or that almost all such newforms have analytic rank $\leq 2$. In particular, almost all odd newforms have analytic rank equal to one. Additionally, for a sparse set of primes $q$ we show the rank of $J_0(q)$ is asymptotically equal to the rank predicted…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\Bbb{Q}$ with the given Weierstrass equation $ y^2=x^3+ax+b$. If $D$ is a squarefree integer, then let $E^{(D)}$ denote the $D$-quadratic twist of $E$ that is given by $E^{(D)}: y^2=x^3+aD^2x+bD^3$. Let $E^{(D)}(\Bbb{Q})$ be the group of $\Bbb{Q}$-rational points of $E^{(D)}$. It is conjectured by J. Silverman that there are infinitely many primes $p$ for which $E^{(p)}(\Bbb{Q})$ has positive rank, and there are infinitely many primes $q$ for which $E^{(q)}(\Bbb{Q})$ has rank $0$. In this paper, assuming the parity conjecture, we show that for infinitely many…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then, we show that the average analytic rank of $E$ over cyclic extensions of degree $l$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $l$ a prime not equal to $2$, is at most $2+r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$, where $r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$ is the analytic rank of the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. This bound is independent of the degree $l$ Also, we also obtain some average analytic rank results over $S_d$-fields.
Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $a \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ and $u \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$. Provided $q \geq 17$, we compute the average number of primes $p$ for which the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius at $p$ is $X^2 - aX + up$ over a family of rank 2 Drinfeld $ \mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules. Our results give asymptotic formulas in the $x$-limit.
We show that average analytic rank of elliptic curves with prescribed torsion $G$ is bounded for every torsion group $G$ under GRH for elliptic curve $L$-functions.
Let $C$ be a curve defined over a number field $k$. We say a closed point $x\in C$ of degree $d$ is isolated if it does not belong to an infinite family of degree $d$ points parametrized by the projective line or a positive rank abelian subvariety of the curve's Jacobian. Building on work of Bourdon, Ejder, Liu, Odumodu, and Viray, we characterize elliptic curves with rational $j$-invariant which give rise to an isolated point of odd degree on $X_1(N)/\mathbb{Q}$ for some positive integer $N$.
In this paper, under GRH for elliptic $L$-functions, we give an upper bound for the probability for an elliptic curve with analytic rank $\leq a$ for $a \geq 11$, and also give an upper bound of $n$-th moments of analytic ranks of elliptic curves. These are applications of counting elliptic curves with local conditions, for example, having good reduction at $p$.
We show that under the assumption of Artin's Primitive Root Conjecture, for all primes p there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar F_p(x)$ with arbitrary high rank and constant j-invariant. For odd primes p, this result follows from a theorem which states that whenever p is a generator of (Z/ell Z)^*/<-1> (ell an odd prime) there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar F_p$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to a power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
We show that for all odd primes $p$, there exist ordinary elliptic curves over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p(x)$ with arbitrarily high rank and constant $j$-invariant. This shows in particular that there are elliptic curves with arbitrarily high rank over these fields for which the corresponding elliptic surface is not supersingular. The result follows from a theorem which states that for all odd prime numbers $p$ and $\ell$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of genus $(\ell-1)/2$ whose Jacobian is isogenous to the power of one ordinary elliptic curve.
The parity of the analytic rank of an elliptic curve is given by the root number in the functional equation L(E,s). Fixing an elliptic curve over any number field and considering the family of its quadratic twists, it is natural to ask what the average analytic rank in this family is. A lower bound on this number is given by the average root number. In this paper, we investigate the root number in such families and derive an asymptotic formula for the proportion of curves in the family that have even rank. Our results are then used to support a conjecture about the average analytic rank in thi…
A tensor defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ has low analytic rank if the distribution of its values differs significantly from the uniform distribution. An order $d$ tensor has partition rank 1 if it can be written as a product of two tensors of order less than $d$, and it has partition rank at most $k$ if it can be written as a sum of $k$ tensors of partition rank 1. In this paper, we prove that if the analytic rank of an order $d$ tensor is at most $r$, then its partition rank is at most $f(r,d,|\mathbb{F}|)$. Previously, this was known with $f$ being an Ackermann-type function in $r$ …
