We obtain lower bounds for Selmer ranks of elliptic curves over dihedral extensions of number fields.
Suppose $K/k$ is a quadratic extension of number fields, $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $k$, and $p$ is an odd prime. Let $F$ denote the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $K$ that is unramified at all primes where $E$ has bad reduction and that is Galois over $k$ with dihedral Galois group (i.e., the generator $c$ of $Gal(K/k)$ acts on $Gal(F/K)$ by -1). We prove (under mild hypotheses on $p$) that if the rank of the pro-$p$ Selmer group $S_p(E/K)$ is odd, then the rank of $S_p(E/L)$ is at least $[L:K]$ for every finite extension $L$ of $K$ in $F$.
We extend many results on Selmer groups for elliptic curves and modular forms to the non-ordinary setting. More precisely, we study the signed Selmer groups defined using the machinery of Wach modules over $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extensions. First, we provide a definition of residual and non-primitive Selmer groups at non-ordinary primes. This allows us to extend techniques developed by Greenberg (for $p$-ordinary elliptic curves) and Kim ($p$-supersingular elliptic curves) to show that if two $p$-non-ordinary modular forms are congruent to each other, then the Iwasawa invariants of their si…
We study the variation of Selmer ranks of Jacobians of twists of hyperelliptic curves and superelliptic curves. We find sufficient conditions for such curves to have infinitely many twists whose Jacobians have Selmer ranks equal to $r$, for any given nonnegative integer $r$. This generalizes earlier results of Mazur-Rubin on elliptic curves.
We define Kolyvagin systems and Stark systems attached to $p$-adic representations in the case of arbitrary `core rank' (the core rank is a measure of the generic Selmer rank in a family of Selmer groups). Previous work dealt only with the case of core rank one, where the Kolyvagin and Stark systems are collections of cohomology classes. For general core rank, they are collections of elements of exterior powers of cohomology groups. We show under mild hypotheses that for general core rank these systems still control the size and structure of Selmer groups, and that the module of all Kolyvagin …
We study the parity of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed principally polarised abelian variety over a number field. Specifically, we determine the proportion of twists having odd (resp. even) 2-Selmer rank. This generalises work of Klagsbrun--Mazur--Rubin for elliptic curves and Yu for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. Several differences in the statistics arise due to the possibility that the Shafarevich--Tate group (if finite) may have order twice a square. In particular, the statistics for parities of 2-Selmer ranks and 2-infinity Selmer ranks need no longer agree…
This paper is the same as ANT-0265, but with a few minor mistakes corrected. Let E be an elliptic curve over Q with good ordinary reduction at a prime p. We show that the parity of the (co)-rank of the p-Selmer group of E is as predicted by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
Given an elliptic curve E over the rational with no rational 2-torsion points, we prove the existence of a quadratic twist of E for which the 2-Selmer rank is less than or equal to 1. By the author's earlier result, we establish a lower bound on the number of D's for which the twists E(D) have 2-Selmer rank <= 1. We include in the introduction our (brief) opinion about why it is supposed to be hard to push our technique to make the Selmer group trivial.
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having…
We prove a level raising mod $\ell=2$ theorem for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. It generalizes theorems of Ribet and Diamond-Taylor and also explains different sign phenomena compared to odd $\ell$. We use it to study the 2-Selmer groups of modular abelian varieties with common mod 2 Galois representation. As an application, we show that the 2-Selmer rank can be arbitrary in level raising families.

This article has three goals. First, we generalize the result of Deuring and Serre on the characterization of supersingular locus of modular curves to all Shimura varieties given by totally indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. Second, we generalize the result of Ribet on arithmetic level raising to such Shimura varieties in the inert case. Third, as an application to number theory, we use the previous results to study the Selmer group of certain triple product motive of an elliptic curve, in the context of the Bloch--Kato conjecture.
In this paper, we study completely faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules with applications to the study of Selmer groups. Namely, if $G$ is a nonabelian group belonging to certain classes of polycyclic pro-$p$ group, we establish the abundance of faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules, i.e., non-trivial torsion modules whose global annihilator ideal is zero. We then show that such $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules occur naturally in arithmetic, namely in the form of Selmer groups of elliptic curves and Selmer groups of Hida deformations. It is interesting to note that faithful Selmer gr…
We study the $2$-Selmer ranks of elliptic curves. We prove that for an arbitrary elliptic curve $E$ over an arbitrary number field $K$, if the set $A_E$ of 2-Selmer ranks of quadratic twists of $E$ contains an integer $c$, it contains all integers larger than $c$ and having the same parity as $c$. We also find sufficient conditions on $A_E$ such that $A_E$ is equal to $\Z_{\ge t_E}$ for some number $t_E$. When all points in $E[2]$ are rational, we give an upper bound for $t_E$.
This paper investigates which integers can appear as 2-Selmer ranks within the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve E defined over a number field K with E(K)[2] = Z/2Z. We show that if E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]), then subject only to constant 2-Selmer parity, each non-negative integer appears infinitely often as the 2-Selmer rank of a quadratic twist of E. If E has a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]) but not over K, then we prove the same result for 2-Selmer ranks greater than or equal to r_2, the number of complex places of K. We also obtain results abo…
We study the variation of the dimension of the Bloch-Kato Selmer group of a p-adic Galois representation of a number field that varies in a refined family. We show that, if one restricts ourselves to representations that are, at every place dividing $p$, crystalline, non-critically refined, and with a fixed number of non-negative Hodge-Tate weights, then the dimension of the Selmer group varies essentially lower-semi-continuously. This allows to prove lower bounds for Selmer groups "by continuity", in particular to prove some predictions of the conjecture of Bloch-Kato for modular forms.
We study the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve E over an arbitrary number field K. Under the assumption that Gal(K(E[2])/K) = S_3 we show that the density (counted in a non-standard way) of twists with Selmer rank r exists for all positive integers r, and is given via an equilibrium distribution, depending only on a single parameter (the `disparity'), of a certain Markov process that is itself independent of E and K. More generally, our results also apply to p-Selmer ranks of twists of 2-dimensional self-dual F_p-representations of the absolu…
Given any positive integer n, it is well known that there always exist triangles with rational sides a, b and c such that the area of the triangle is n. Assuming finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group, we first construct a family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves of rank exactly 1 from Heron triangles of a certain type. We also explicitly produce a separate family of infinitely many Heronian elliptic curves with 2-Selmer rank lying between 1 and 3.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $K$ defined by a monic irreducible cubic polynomial $F(x)$. When $E$ is \textit{nice} at all finite primes of $K$, we bound its $2$-Selmer rank in terms of the $2$-rank of a modified ideal class group of the field $L=K[x]/{(F(x))}$, which we call the \textit{semi-narrow class group} of $L$. We then provide several sufficient conditions for $E$ being nice at a finite prime. As an application, when $K$ is a real quadratic field, $E/K$ is semistable and the discriminant of $F$ is totally negative, then we frequently determine the $2$-Selmer rank of…
A formula is given for the dimension of the Selmer group of the rational three-isogeny of elliptic curves of the form y^2=x^3+a(x-b)^2. The formula is in terms of the three-ranks of the quadratic number fields Q(\sqrt{a}) and Q(\sqrt{-3a}) and various aspects of the arithmetic of these number fields. In addition a duality theorem is used to relate the dimension of the Selmer group of the three-isogeny with the dimension of the Selmer group of its dual isogeny.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. Associated to a pair $(E, \mathcal{F}_\infty)$ consisting of a rational elliptic curve $E$ and a $p$-adic Lie extension $\mathcal{F}_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, is the $p$-primary Selmer group $Sel_{p^\infty}(E/\mathcal{F}_\infty)$ of $E$ over $\mathcal{F}_\infty$. In this paper, we study the arithmetic statistics for the algebraic structure of this Selmer group. The results provide insights into the asymptotics for the growth of Mordell--Weil ranks of elliptic curves in noncommutative towers.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over anumber field F. In this paper, we will investigate the growth of p-rank of the fine Selmer group in three situations. In particular, in each of these situations, we show that there is a strong analogy between the growth of the p-rank of the fine Selmer group and the growth of the p-rank of the class groups.
We study the parity of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of an arbitrary elliptic curve E over an arbitrary number field K. We prove that the fraction of twists (of a given elliptic curve over a fixed number field) having even 2-Selmer rank exists as a stable limit over the family of twists, and we compute this fraction as an explicit product of local factors. We give an example of an elliptic curve E such that as K varies, these fractions are dense in [0, 1]. More generally, our results also apply to p-Selmer ranks of twists of 2-dimensional self-dual F_p-representations of the…
In 2016, Balakrishnan-Ho-Kaplan-Spicer-Stein-Weigandt produced a database of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which they computed the rank, the size of the $2$-Selmer group, and other arithmetic invariants. They observed that after a certain point, the average rank seemed to decrease as the height increased. Here we consider the family of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose rational torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$. Conditional on GRH and BSD, we compute the rank of $92\%$ of the $202461$ curves with parameter he…
We investigate in detail a homomorphism which we call the 2-Selmer signature map from the $2$-Selmer group of a number field $K$ to a nondegenerate symmetric space, in particular proving the image is a maximal totally isotropic subspace. Applications include precise predictions on the density of fields $K$ with given narrow class group 2-rank and with given unit group signature rank. In addition to theoretical evidence, extensive computations for totally real cubic and quintic fields are presented that match the predictions extremely well. In an appendix with Richard Foote, we classify the max…
We study the parity of rank of $2$-${\rm Selmer}$ groups associated to $π/3$ and $2π/3$-congruent numbers. Our second result gives some positive densities about $π/3$ and $2π/3$ non-congruent numbers which can support the even part of Goldfeld's conjecture. We give some necessary conditions such that $n$ is non $π/3$-congruent number for elliptic curves $E_n$ whose Shafarevich-Tate group is non-trivial. In the last section, we show that for $n=pq\equiv 5(resp. \ 11)\pmod{24}$, the density of non $π/3$($resp.$ $2π/3$)-congruent numbers is at least 75\%, where $p,q$ are primes.
The class number divisibility problem for number fields is one of the classical problems in algebraic number theory, which originated from Gauss' class number conjectures. The relation between the points on an elliptic curve and class number divisibility of a number field has been explored through the works of various mathematicians. Here, we explicitly construct an unramified abelian extension of a bi-quadratic field generated from points of a certain type of elliptic curve. Moreover, showing the $2$-Selmer rank of the said elliptic curve as $1$, we also construct an infinite family of bi-qua…
A weaker form of a 1979 conjecture of Goldfeld states that for every elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, a positive proportion of its quadratic twists $E^{(d)}$ have rank 1. Using tools from Galois cohomology, we give criteria on E and d which force a positive proportion of the quadratic twists of E to have 3-Selmer rank 1 and global root number -1. We then give four nonisomorphic infinite families of elliptic curves $E_{m, n}$ which satisfy these criteria. Conditional on the rank part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, this verifies the aforementioned conjecture for infinitely many ellip…
The elliptic curve $E_k \colon y^2 = x^3 + k$ admits a natural 3-isogeny $ϕ_k \colon E_k \to E_{-27k}$. We compute the average size of the $ϕ_k$-Selmer group as $k$ varies over the integers. Unlike previous results of Bhargava and Shankar on $n$-Selmer groups of elliptic curves, we show that this average can be very sensitive to congruence conditions on $k$; this sensitivity can be precisely controlled by the Tamagawa numbers of $E_k$ and $E_{-27k}$. As consequences, we prove that the average rank of the curves $E_k$, $k\in\mathbb Z$, is less than 1.21 and over $23\%$ (resp. $41\%$) of the cur…
It is known, that for every elliptic curve over Q there exists a quadratic extension in which the rank does not go up. For a large class of elliptic curves, the same is known with the rank replaced by the 2-Selmer group. We show, however, that there exists a large supply of semistable elliptic curves E/Q whose 2-Selmer group goes up in every bi-quadratic extension and for any odd prime p, the p-Selmer group goes up in every D_{2p}-extension and every elementary abelian p-extension of rank at least 2. We provide a simple criterion for an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field to exhibit …
For any number field K with a complex place, we present an infinite family of elliptic curves defined over K such that $dim \mathbb{F}_2 Sel_2(E^F/K) \ge dim \mathbb{F}_2 E^F(K)[2] + r_2$ for every quadratic twist E^F of every curve E in this family, where r_2 is the number of complex places of K. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture appearing in work of Mazur and Rubin.
We explain a method for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 3-isogeny Selmer groups of an elliptic curve. This improves the upper bound on the rank of the elliptic curve coming from a descent by 3-isogeny, to that coming from a full 3-descent. One ingredient of our work is a new algorithm for solving cubic norm equations, that avoids the need for any S-unit computations. As an application, we show that the elliptic curves with torsion subgroup of order 3 and rank at least 13, found by Eroshkin, have rank exactly 13.
We consider the family of hyperelliptic curves over $\Q$ of fixed genus along with a marked rational Weierstrass point and a marked rational non-Weierstrass point. When these curves are ordered by height, we prove that the average Mordell-Weil rank of their Jacobians is bounded above by 5/2. We prove this by showing that the average rank of the 2-Selmer groups is bounded above by 6. We also prove that the average size of the $ϕ$-Selmer groups of a family of isogenies associated to this family is exactly 2.
Let $F$ be a number field unramified at an odd prime $p$ and $F_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extension of $F$. Generalizing Kobayashi plus/minus Selmer groups for elliptic curves, Büyükboduk and Lei have defined modified Selmer groups, called signed Selmer groups, for certain non-ordinary $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)$-representations. In particular, their construction applies to abelian varieties defined over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at primes of $F$ dividing $p$. Assuming that these Selmer groups are cotorsion $\mathbf{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F_\infty/F)]]$-modules, we sh…
In this article, we prove that the average rank of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, when ordered by height, is less than $1$ (in fact, less than $.885$). As a consequence of our methods, we also prove that at least four fifths of all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ have rank either 0 or 1; furthermore, at least one fifth of all elliptic curves in fact have rank 0. The primary ingredient in the proofs of these theorems is a determination of the average size of the $5$-Selmer group of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$; we prove that this average size is $6$. Another key ingredient is a new l…
For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded.…
The study of $n$-Selmer group of elliptic curve over number field in recent past has led to the discovery of some deep results in the arithmetic of elliptic curves. Given two elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over a number field $K$, Mazur-Rubin\cite{mr} have defined them to be {\it $n$-Selmer companion} if for every quadratic twist $χ$ of $K$, the $n$-Selmer groups of $E_1^χ$ and $E_2^χ$ over $K$ are isomorphic. Given a prime $p$, they have given sufficient conditions for two elliptic curves to be $p^r$-Selmer companion in terms of mod-$p^r$ congruences between the curves. We discuss an analogu…
This paper is an extension of the work of Dummit and Voight on modeling the 2-Selmer group of number fields. We extend their model to $S_n$-number fields of even degree and develop heuristics on the difference in the 2-ranks between the class group and narrow class group.
Taking A to be an abelian variety with full 2-torsion over a number field k, we investigate how the 4-Selmer rank of the quadratic twist A^d changes with d. We show that this rank depends on the splitting behavior of the primes dividing d in a certain number field L/k. Assuming the grand Riemann hypothesis, we then prove that, given an elliptic curve E/Q with full rational 2-torsion, the quadratic twist family of E usually has the distribution of $4$-Selmer groups predicted by Delaunay's heuristic. Analogously, and still subject to the grand Riemann hypothesis, we prove that the set of quadrat…
