We prove that the entanglement cost equals the regularized entanglement of formation for any infinite-dimensional quantum state $ρ_{AB}$ with finite quantum entropy on at least one of the subsystems $A$ or $B$. This generalizes a foundational result in quantum information theory that was previously formulated only for operations and states on finite-dimensional systems. The extension to infinite-dimensional systems is nontrivial because the conventional tools for establishing both the direct and converse bounds, i.e., strong typicality, monotonicity, and asymptotic continuity, are no longer directly applicable. To address this problem, we construct a new entanglement dilution protocol for infinite-dimensional states implementable by local operations and a finite amount of one-way classical communication (one-way LOCC), using weak and strong typicality multiple times. We also prove the optimality of this protocol among all protocols, even under infinite-dimensional separable operations, by developing an argument based on alternative forms of monotonicity and asymptotic continuity of the entanglement of formation for infinite-dimensional states. Along the way, we derive a new integral representation for the quantum entropy of infinite-dimensional states, which we believe to be of independent interest. Our results allow us to fully characterize an important operational entanglement measure -- the entanglement cost -- for all infinite-dimensional physical systems.
It is shown that, every entangled state in an infinite-dimensional composite system has a simple entanglement witness of the form $αI+T$ with $α$ a nonnegative number and $T$ a finite rank self-adjoint operator. We also provide two methods of constructing entanglement witness and apply them to obtain some entangled states that cannot be detected by the PPT criterion and the realignment criterion.
The coding theorem for the entanglement-assisted communication via infinite-dimensional quantum channel with linear constraint is extended to a natural degree of generality. Relations between the entanglement-assisted classical capacity and the $χ$-capacity of constrained channels are obtained and conditions for their coincidence are given. Sufficient conditions for continuity of the entanglement-assisted classical capacity as a function of a channel are obtained. Some applications of the obtained results to analysis of Gaussian channels are considered. A general (continuous) version of the fu…
We consider an infinite spin chain as a bipartite system consisting of the left and right half-chain and analyze entanglement properties of pure states with respect to this splitting. In this context we show that the amount of entanglement contained in a given state is deeply related to the von Neumann type of the observable algebras associated to the half-chains. Only the type I case belongs to the usual entanglement theory which deals with density operators on tensor product Hilbert spaces, and only in this situation separable normal states exist. In all other cases the corresponding state i…
A definition of the Schmidt number of a state of an infinite dimensional bipartite quantum system is given and properties of the corresponding family of Schmidt classes are considered. The existence of states with a given Schmidt number such that any their countable convex decomposition does not contain pure states with finite Schmidt rank is established. Partially entanglement breaking channels in infinite dimensions are studied. Several properties of these channels well known in finite dimensions are generalized to the infinite dimensional case. At the same time, the existence of partially e…
We analyse two possible definitions of the squashed entanglement in an infinite-dimensional bipartite system: direct translation of the finite-dimensional definition and its universal extension. It is shown that the both definitions produce the same lower semicontinuous entanglement measure possessing all basis properties of the squashed entanglement on the set of states having at least one finite marginal entropy. Is also shown that the second definition gives an adequate extension of this measure to the set of all states of infinite-dimensional bipartite system. A general condition relating …
Quantum error correcting codes with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces have yielded new insights on bulk reconstruction in AdS/CFT. In this paper, we give an explicit construction of a quantum error correcting code where the code and physical Hilbert spaces are infinite-dimensional. We define a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$ acting on the code Hilbert space and show how it is mapped to a von Neumann algebra of type II$_1$ acting on the physical Hilbert space. This toy model demonstrates the equivalence of entanglement wedge reconstruction and the exact equality of bulk and boundary relative…
We consider two chains, each made of $N$ independent oscillators, immersed in a common thermal bath and study the dynamics of their mutual quantum correlations in the thermodynamic, large-$N$ limit. We show that dissipation and noise due to the presence of the external environment are able to generate collective quantum correlations between the two chains at the mesoscopic level. The created collective quantum entanglement between the two many-body systems turns out to be rather robust, surviving for asymptotically long times even for non vanishing bath temperatures.
We reformulate entanglement wedge reconstruction in the language of operator-algebra quantum error correction with infinite-dimensional physical and code Hilbert spaces. Von Neumann algebras are used to characterize observables in a boundary subregion and its entanglement wedge. Assuming that the infinite-dimensional von Neumann algebras associated with an entanglement wedge and its complement may both be reconstructed in their corresponding boundary subregions, we prove that the relative entropies measured with respect to the bulk and boundary observables are equal. We also prove the converse…
A class of lower bounds for the entanglement cost of any quantum state was recently introduced in [arXiv:2111.02438] in the form of entanglement monotones known as the tempered robustness and tempered negativity. Here we extend their definitions to point-to-point quantum channels, establishing a lower bound for the asymptotic entanglement cost of any channel, whether finite or infinite dimensional. This leads, in particular, to a bound that is computable as a semidefinite program and that can outperform previously known lower bounds, including ones based on quantum relative entropy. In the cou…
In this paper, in terms of the relation between the state and the reduced states of it, we obtain two inequalities which are valid for all separable states in infinite-dimensional bipartite quantum systems. One of them provides an entanglement criterion which is strictly stronger than the computable cross-norm or realignment (CCNR) criterion.
We provide a simple argument showing that, in the limit of infinite acceleration, the entanglement in a fermionic field bipartite system must be independent of the choice of Unruh modes. This implies that most tensor product structures used previously to compute field entanglement in relativistic quantum information cannot give rise to physical results.
We give a representation for entanglement-breaking channels in separable Hilbert space that generalizes the "Kraus decomposition with rank one operators" and use it to describe the complementary channels. We also give necessary and sufficient condition of entanglement-breaking for a general quantum Gaussian channel. Application of this condition to one-mode channels provides several new cases where the additivity conjecture holds in full generality.
We investigate entanglement measures in the infinite-dimensional regime. First, we discuss the peculiarities that may occur if the Hilbert space of a bi-partite system is infinite-dimensional, most notably the fact that the set of states with infinite entropy of entanglement is trace-norm dense in state space, implying that in any neighborhood of every product state there lies an arbitrarily strongly entangled state. The starting point for a clarification of this counterintuitive property is the observation that if one imposes the natural and physically reasonable constraint that the mean ener…
In this paper we give a general integral representation for separable states in the tensor product of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and provide the first example of separable states that are not countably decomposable. We also prove the structure theorem for the quantum communication channels that are entanglement-breaking, generalizing the finite-dimensional result of M. Horodecki, Ruskai and Shor. In the finite dimensional case such channels can be characterized as having the Kraus representation with operators of rank 1. The above example implies existence of infinite-dimensional enta…
It is shown that the order property of pure bipartite states under SLOCC (stochastic local operations and classical communications) changes radically when dimensionality shifts from finite to infinite. In contrast to finite dimensional systems where there is no pure incomparable state, the existence of infinitely many mutually SLOCC incomparable states is shown for infinite dimensional systems even under the bounded energy and finite information exchange condition. These results show that the effect of the infinite dimensionality of Hilbert space, the ``infinite workspace'' property, remains e…
We show that bipartite quantum states of any dimension, which do not have a positive partial transpose, become 1-distillable when one adds an infinitesimal amount of bound entanglement. To this end we investigate the activation properties of a new class of symmetric bound entangled states of full rank. It is shown that in this set there exist universal activator states capable of activating the distillation of any NPPT state.
Recent experimental progress in prolonging the coherence time of a quantum system prompts us to explore the behavior of quantum entanglement at the beginning of the decoherence process. The response of the entanglement under an infinitesimal noise can serve as a signature of the robustness of entangled states. A crucial problem of this topic in multipartite systems is to compute the degree of entanglement in a mixed state. We find a family of global noise in three-qubit systems, which is composed of four W states. Under its influence, the linear response of the tripartite entanglement of a sym…
We propose entanglement measures with asymptotic weak-monotonicity. We show that a normalized form of entanglement measures with the asymptotic weak-monotonicity are lower (upper) bound for the entanglement of cost (distillation).
We develop a scheme to distill entanglement from bipartite Fermionic systems in an arbitrary quasifree state. It can be applied if either one system containing infinite one-copy entanglement is available or if an arbitrary amount of equally prepared systems can be used. We show that the efficiency of the proposed scheme is in general very good and in some cases even optimal. Furthermore we apply it to Fermions hopping on an infinite lattice and demonstrate in this context that an efficient numerical analysis is possible for more then 10^6 lattice sites.
We devise a method based on the tensor-network formalism to calculate genuine multisite entanglement in ground states of infinite spin chains containing spin-1/2 or spin-1 quantum particles. The ground state is obtained by employing an infinite time-evolving block decimation method acting upon an initial matrix product state for the infinite spin system. We explicitly show how such infinite matrix product states with translational invariance provide a natural framework to derive the generalized geometric measure, a computable measure of genuine multisite entanglement, in the thermodynamic limi…
An example is given of an interaction that produces an infinite amount of entanglement in an infinitely short time, but only a finite amount in longer times. The interaction arises from a standard Kerr nonlinearity and a 50/50 beamsplitter, and the initial state is a coherent state. For certain finite interaction times multi-dimensional generalizations of entangled coherent states are generated, for which we construct a teleportation protocol. Similarities between probabilistic teleportation and unambiguous state discrimination are pointed out.
The entanglement entropy of the two-dimensional random transverse Ising model is studied with a numerical implementation of the strong disorder renormalization group. The asymptotic behavior of the entropy per surface area diverges at, and only at, the quantum phase transition that is governed by an infinite randomness fixed point. Here we identify a double-logarithmic multiplicative correction to the area law for the entanglement entropy. This contrasts with the pure area law valid at the infinite randomness fixed point in the diluted transverse Ising model in higher dimensions.
We compute the minimal energy cost for extracting entanglement from the ground state of a bosonic or fermionic quadratic system. Specifically, we find the minimal energy increase $ΔE_{\mathrm{min}}$ in the system resulting from replacing an entangled pair of modes, sharing entanglement entropy $ΔS$, by a product state, and we show how to construct modes achieving this minimal energy cost. Thus, we obtain a protocol independent lower bound on the extraction of pure state entanglement from quadratic systems. Due to their generality, our results apply to a large range of physical systems, as we d…
We consider the problem of the validity of a statistical mechanical description of two-site entanglement in an infinite spin chain described by the XY model Hamiltonian. We show that the two-site entanglement of the state, evolved from the initial equilibrium state, after a change of the magnetic field, does not approach its equilibrium value. This suggests that two-site entanglement, like (single-site) magnetization, is a nonergodic quantity in this model. Moreover we show that these two nonergodic quantities behave in a complementary way.
We show that the global infinitesimal change in the multi-particle pure product state gives rise to an entangled state. This suggests that even if there is no interaction present between the subsystems, i.e., at each time instant the state is non-entangled, the tangent vector is typically entangled. Since the tangent space vectors tell the state-space vectors how to change this implies that quantum entanglement is necessary for motion or change in general. This is truly a `hidden power' of quantum entanglement. During quantum computation even though at each time instant the state is not entang…
We consider two properties of the set of quantum states as a convex topological space and some their implications concerning the notions of a convex hull and of a convex roof of a function defined on a subset of quantum states. By using these results we analyze two infinite-dimensional versions (discrete and continuous) of the convex roof construction of entanglement monotones, which is widely used in finite dimensions. It is shown that the discrete version may be 'false' in the sense that the resulting functions may not possess the main property of entanglement monotones while the continuous …
We compute entanglement cost and distillable entanglement of states supported on symmetric subspace. Not only giving general formula, we apply them to the output states of optimal cloning machines. Surprisingly, under some settings, the optimal n to m clone and true m copies are the same in entanglement measures. However, they differ in the error exponent of entanglement dilution. We also presented a general theory of entanglement dilution which is applicable to any non-i.i.d sequence of states.
We investigate the dynamics of a kicked particle in an infinite square well undergoing frequent measurements of energy. For a large class of periodic kicking force, constant diffusion is found in such a non-KAM system. The influence of phase shift of the kicking potential on the short-time dynamical behavior is discussed. The general asymptotical measurement-assisted diffusion rate is obtained. The entanglement between the particle and the measuring apparatus is investigated. There exist two distinct dynamical behaviors of entanglement. The bipartite entanglement grows with the kicking steps a…
We show that the entanglement of cost and entanglement of distillation can be vague when we consider a more general form of entanglement manipulation in which we collectively deal with not only states of our concern but also other states. We introduce the most general entanglement manipulation in which the formation and distillation can be simultaneously performed. We show that in a certain case entanglement manipulations are reversible with respect to the most general entanglement manipulation. This broadens our scope of vision on the irreversibility of entanglement manipulations.
We introduce one-way LOCC protocols for quantum state merging for compound sources, which have asymptotically optimal entanglement as well as classical communication resource costs. For the arbitrarily varying quantum source (AVQS) model, we determine the one-way entanglement distillation capacity, where we utilize the robustification and elimination techniques, well-known from classical as well as quantum channel coding under assumption of arbitrarily varying noise. Investigating quantum state merging for AVQS, we demonstrate by example, that the usual robustification procedure leads to subop…
A renormalized version of the von Neumann quantum entropy (which is finite and continuous in general, infinite dimensional case) and which obeys several of the natural physical demands (as expected for a "good" measure of entanglement in the case of general quantum states describing bipartite and infinite-dimensional systems) is proposed. The renormalized quantum entropy is defined by the explicit use of the Fredholm determinants theory. To prove the main results on continuity and finiteness of the introduced renormalization the fundamental Grothendick approach, which is based on the infinite …
We give a detailed proof of the conjecture that the asymptotic entanglement cost of preparing a bipartite state ρis equal to the regularized entanglement of formation of ρ.
The characterization of an infinite-order quantum phase transition (QPT) by entanglement measures is analyzed. To this aim, we consider two closely related solvable spin-1/2 chains, namely, the Ashkin-Teller and the staggered XXZ models. These systems display a distinct pattern of eigenstates but exhibit the same thermodynamics, i.e. the same energy spectrum. By performing exact diagonalization, we investigate the behavior of pairwise and block entanglement in the ground state of both models. In contrast with the XXZ chain, we show that pairwise entanglement fails in the characterization of th…
We analyse the relationship between the full additivity of the entanglement cost and its full monotonicity under local operations and classical communication. We show that the two properties are equivalent for the entanglement cost. The proof works for the regularization of any convex, subadditive, and asymptotically continuous entanglement monotone, and hence also applies to the asymptotic relative entropy of entanglement.
The "entanglement cost" of a bipartite measurement is the amount of shared entanglement two participants need to use up in order to carry out the given measurement by means of local operations and classical communication. Here we numerically investigate the entanglement cost of generic orthogonal measurements on two qubits. Our results strongly suggest that for almost all measurements of this kind, the entanglement cost is strictly greater than the average entanglement of the eigenstates associated with the measurements, implying that the nonseparability of a two-qubit orthogonal measurement i…
A measure of quantum correlation defined from an information-theoretic perspective, namely, quantum discord, is applied to study the time-evolved nonequilibrium state of the infinite anisotropic quantum XY spin chain in a transverse time-dependent field. In particular, we probe whether the collapse and revival of nearest-neighbor entanglement of the state seen with a varying initial applied field strength, at a fixed evolution time, may be predicted from the behavior of the quantum correlation measure. For this quantum many-body system, realizable with currently available technology, we find t…
We explore the dual problem of the convex roof construction by identifying it as a linear semi-infinite programming (LSIP) problem. Using the LSIP theory, we show the absence of a duality gap between primal and dual problems, even if the entanglement quantifier is not continuous, and prove that the set of optimal solutions is non-empty and bounded. In addition, we implement a central cutting-plane algorithm for LSIP to quantify entanglement between three qubits. The algorithm has global convergence property and gives lower bounds on the entanglement measure for non-optimal feasible points. As …
We search for translationally invariant states of qubits on a ring that maximize the nearest neighbor entanglement. This problem was initially studied by O'Connor and Wootters [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 052302 (2001)]. We first map the problem to the search for the ground state of a spin 1/2 Heisenberg XXZ model. Using the exact Bethe ansatz solution in the limit of an infinite ring, we prove the correctness of the assumption of O'Connor and Wootters that the state of maximal entanglement does not have any pair of neighboring spins ``down'' (or, alternatively spins ``up''). For sufficiently small…

We find that the dynamical phase transition (DPT) in nearest-neighbor bipartite entanglement of time-evolved states of the anisotropic infinite quantum XY spin chain, in a transverse time-dependent magnetic field, can be quantitatively characterized by the dynamics of an information-theoretic quantum correlation measure, namely, quantum work-deficit (QWD). We show that only those nonequilibrium states exhibit entanglement resurrection after death, on changing the field parameter during the DPT, for which the cumulative bipartite QWD is above a threshold. The results point to an interesting int…
Entanglement bits or ``ebits'' have been proposed as a quantitative measure of a fundamental resource in quantum information processing. For such an interpretation to be valid, it is important to show that the same number of ebits in different forms or concentrations are inter-convertible in the asymptotic limit. Here we draw attention to a very important but hitherto unnoticed aspect of entanglement manipulation --- the classical communication cost. We construct an explicit procedure which demonstrates that for bi-partite pure states, in the asymptotic limit, entanglement can be concentrated …
We present the minimal energy costs for the measurement and the information erase, using only the Helmholtz free energy and the entanglement of formation. The entanglement of formation appears in the form of difference which indicates the amount of entanglement transfer on the memory during the processes; the cost of the measurement is given by the entanglement gain, whereas the cost of the information erase is given by the loss of available entanglement. Putting together the present Letter and Rev. E 88, 042143 (2013), we can describe the violation and the restoration of the second law only i…
Based on set theoretic ordering properties, a general formulation for constructing a pair of convertibility monotones, which are generalizations of distillable entanglement and entanglement cost, is presented. The new pair of monotones do not always coincide for pure bipartite infinite dimensional states under SLOCC (stochastic local operations and classical communications), demonstrating the existence of SLOCC incomparable pure bipartite states, a new property of entanglement in infinite dimensional systems, with no counterpart in the corresponding finite dimensional systems.
We study the entanglement cost under quantum operations preserving the positivity of the partial transpose (PPT-operations). We demonstrate that this cost is directly related to the logarithmic negativity, thereby providing the operational interpretation for this easily computable entanglement measure. As examples we discuss general Werner states and arbitrary bi-partite Gaussian states. Equipped with this result we then prove that for the anti-symmetric Werner state PPT-cost and PPT-entanglement of distillation coincide giving the first example of a truly mixed state for which entanglement ma…
We consider the problem of detecting entanglement and nonlocality in one-dimensional (1D) infinite, translation-invariant (TI) systems when just near-neighbor information is available. This issue is deeper than one might think a priori, since, as we show, there exist instances of local separable states (classical boxes) which admit only entangled (nonclassical) TI extensions. We provide a simple characterization of the set of local states of multiseparable TI spin chains and construct a family of linear witnesses which can detect entanglement in infinite TI states from the nearest-neighbor red…
What is the energy cost of extracting entanglement from complex quantum systems? In other words, given a state of a quantum system, how much energy does it cost to extract m EPR pairs? This is an important question, particularly for quantum field theories where the vacuum is generally highly entangled. Here we build a theory to understand the energy cost of entanglement extraction. First, we apply it to a toy model, and then we define the entanglement temperature, which relates the energy cost to the amount of extracted entanglement. Next, we give a physical argument to find the energy cost of…
We first investigate the one-shot static entanglement cost to simulate a bipartite quantum channel under the set of non-entangling channels. The lower bound on the static entanglement cost is given by the generalized robustness of the target channel as well as the robust-generating power of the channel, which implies that the cost necessary to generate a bipartite quantum channel might not be retrievable in general. Next, we conceive a set of quantum channels that extends the set of non-entangling channels. We find out that the one-shot static entanglement cost under the extended set of channe…
Pre-shared entanglement can significantly boost communication rates in the regime of high thermal noise, and a low-brightness transmitter. In this regime, the ratio between the entanglement-assisted capacity and the Holevo capacity, the maximum reliable-communication rate permitted by quantum mechanics without any pre-shared entanglement as a resource, is known to scale as $\log(1/N_S)$, where $N_S \ll 1$ is the mean transmitted photon number per mode. This is especially promising in enabling a large boost to radio-frequency communications in the weak-transmit-power regime, by exploiting pre-s…
The entanglement cost of arbitrary sequences of bipartite states is shown to be expressible as the minimization of a conditional spectral entropy rate over sequences of separable extensions of the states in the sequence. The expression is shown to reduce to the regularized entanglement of formation when the n-th state in the sequence consists of n copies of a single bipartite state.
We report the exact entanglement cost of a class of multiqubit bound entangled states, computed in the context of a universal model for multipartite state preparation. The exact amount of entanglement needed to prepare such states are determined by first obtaining lower bounds using a cut-set approach, and then providing explicit local protocols achieving the lower bound.
