Quantum information theory is plagued by the problem of regularisations, which require the evaluation of formidable asymptotic quantities. This makes it computationally intractable to gain a precise quantitative understanding of the ultimate efficiency of key operational tasks such as entanglement manipulation. Here we consider the problem of computing the asymptotic entanglement cost of preparing noisy quantum states under quantum operations with positive partial transpose (PPT). By means of an analytical example, a previously claimed solution to this problem is shown to be incorrect. Building on a previous characterisation of the PPT entanglement cost in terms of a regularised formula, we construct instead a hierarchy of semi-definite programs that bypasses the issue of regularisation altogether, and converges to the true asymptotic value of the entanglement cost. Our main result establishes that this convergence happens exponentially fast, thus yielding an efficient algorithm that approximates the cost up to an additive error $\varepsilon$ in time $\mathrm{poly}(D,\,\log(1/\varepsilon))$, where $D$ is the underlying Hilbert space dimension. To our knowledge, this is the first time that an asymptotic entanglement measure is shown to be efficiently computable despite no closed-form formula being available.
We study entanglement in mixed bipartite quantum states which are invariant under simultaneous SU(2) transformations in both subsystems. Previous results on the behavior of such states under partial transposition are substantially extended. The spectrum of the partial transpose of a given SU(2)-invariant density matrix $ρ$ is entirely determined by the diagonal elements of $ρ$ in a basis of tensor-product states of both spins with respect to a common quantization axis. We construct a set of operators which act as entanglement witnesses on SU(2)-invariant states. A sufficient criterion for $ρ$ …
Partial transpose is an important operation for quantifying the entanglement, here we study the (partial) transpose of any single (two-mode) operators. Using the Fock-basis expansion, it is found that the transposed operator of an arbitrary operator can be obtained by replacement of a^{†}(a) by a(a^{†}) instead of c-number within normal ordering form. The transpose of displacement operator and Wigner operator are studied, from which the relation of Wigner function, characteristics function and average values such as covariance matrix are constructed between density operator and transposed dens…
We construct tri-qubit genuinely entangled states which have positive partial transposes with respect to bi-partition of systems. These examples disprove a conjecture [L. Novo, T. Moroder and O. G\" uhne, Phys.Rev.A {88}, 012305 (2013)] which claims that PPT mixtures are necessary and sufficient for biseparability of three qubits.
We study the entanglement cost under quantum operations preserving the positivity of the partial transpose (PPT-operations). We demonstrate that this cost is directly related to the logarithmic negativity, thereby providing the operational interpretation for this easily computable entanglement measure. As examples we discuss general Werner states and arbitrary bi-partite Gaussian states. Equipped with this result we then prove that for the anti-symmetric Werner state PPT-cost and PPT-entanglement of distillation coincide giving the first example of a truly mixed state for which entanglement ma…
We investigate conditions on a finite set of multi-partite product vectors for which separable states with corresponding product states have unique decomposition, and show that this is true in most cases if the number of product vectors is sufficiently small. In the three qubit case, generic five dimensional spaces give rise to faces of the convex set consisting of all separable states, which are affinely isomorphic to the five dimensional simplex with six vertices. As a byproduct, we construct three qubit entangled PPT edge states of rank four with explicit formulae. This covers those entangl…
We propose an ordered set of experimentally accessible conditions for detecting entanglement in mixed states. The $k$-th condition involves comparing moments of the partially transposed density operator up to order $k$. Remarkably, the union of all moment inequalities reproduces the Peres-Horodecki criterion for detecting entanglement. Our empirical studies highlight that the first four conditions already detect mixed state entanglement reliably in a variety of quantum architectures. Exploiting symmetries can help to further improve their detection capabilities. We also show how to estimate mo…
We show that quantum designs characterize the general structure of the optimal approximation of the transpose map on quantum states. Based on this characterization, we propose an implementation of the approximate transpose map by a measurement-and-preparation scheme. The results show that state-manipulation in quantum two-designs suffices for transpose-based quantu3 information applications. In particular, we present how these results can be applied to the framework of detecting multipartite entangled states, for instance, when local measurements or interferometry-based experimental approaches…
In this Letter, we show that the fulfillment of uncertainty relations is a sufficient criterion for a quantum-mechanically permissible state. We specifically construct two pseudo-spin observables for an arbitrary non-positive Hermitian matrix whose uncertainty relation is violated. This method enables us to systematically derive separability conditions for all negative partial-transpose states in experimentally accessible forms. In particular, generalized entanglement criteria are derived from the Schrodinger-Robertson inequalities for bipartite continuous-variable states.
For the certification and benchmarking of medium-size quantum devices efficient methods to characterize entanglement are needed. In this context, it has been shown that locally randomized measurements on a multiparticle quantum system can be used to obtain valuable information on the so-called moments of the partially transposed quantum state. This allows one to infer some separability properties of a state, but how to use the given information in an optimal and systematic manner has yet to be determined. We propose two general entanglement detection methods based on the moments of the partial…
We demonstrate that even under positive partial transpose preserving operations in an asymptotic setting GHZ and W states are not reversibly interconvertible. We investigate the structure of minimal reversible entanglement generating set (MREGS) for tri-partite states under positive partial transpose (ppt) preserving operations. We demonstrate that the set consisting of W and EPR states alone cannot be an MREGS. In this context we prove the surprising result that the relative entropy of entanglement can be strictly sub-additive for certain pure tri-partite states which is crucial to keep open …
The partial transpose (PT) is an important function for entanglement testing and quantification and also for the study of geometrical aspects of the quantum state space. In this article, considering general bipartite and multipartite discrete systems, explicit formulas ready for the numerical implementation of the PT and of related entanglement functions are presented and the Fortran code produced for that purpose is described. What is more, we obtain an analytical expression for the Hilbert-Schmidt entanglement of two-qudit systems and for the associated closest separable state. In contrast t…
In quantum information theory, it is a fundamental problem to construct multipartite unextendible product bases (UPBs). We show that there exist two families UPBs in Hilbert space $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^4$ by merging two different systems of an existing $7$-qubit UPB of size $11$. Moreover, a new family of $7$-qubit positive-partial-transpose (PPT) entangled states of rank $2^7-11$ is constructed. We analytically derive a geometric measure of entanglement of a special PPT entangled states. Also an upper bound a…
We demonstrate the irreversibility of asymptotic entanglement manipulation under quantum operations that completely preserve the positivity of partial transpose (PPT), resolving a major open problem in quantum information theory. Our key tool is a new efficiently computable additive lower bound for the asymptotic relative entropy of entanglement with respect to PPT states, which can be used to evaluate the entanglement cost under local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We find that for any rank-two mixed state supporting on the $3\otimes3$ antisymmetric subspace, the amount of dis…
A basic diagnostic of entanglement in mixed quantum states is known as the partial transpose and the corresponding entanglement measure is called the logarithmic negativity. Despite the great success of logarithmic negativity in characterizing bosonic many-body systems, generalizing the partial transpose to fermionic systems remained a technical challenge until recently when a new definition that accounts for the Fermi statistics was put forward. In this paper, we propose a way to generalize the partial transpose to anyons with (non-Abelian) fractional statistics based on the apparent similari…
Detection of entanglement in bipartite states is a fundamental task in quantum information. The first method to verify entanglement in mixed states was the partial-transpose criterion. Subsequently, numerous quantifiers for bipartite entanglement were introduced, among them concurrence and negativity. Surprisingly, these quantities are often treated as distinct or independent of each other. The aim of this contribution is to highlight the close relations between these concepts, to show the connections between seemingly independent results, and to present various estimates for the mixed-state c…
Composite quantum systems can be in generic states characterized not only by entanglement, but also by more general quantum correlations. The interplay between these two signatures of nonclassicality is still not completely understood. In this work we investigate this issue focusing on computable and observable measures of such correlations: entanglement is quantified by the negativity N, while general quantum correlations are measured by the (normalized) geometric quantum discord D_G. For two-qubit systems, we find that the geometric discord reduces to the squared negativity on pure states, w…
We present a mathematical construction of new quantum information measures that generalize the notion of logarithmic negativity. Our approach is based on formal group theory. We shall prove that this family of generalized negativity functions, due their algebraic properties, is suitable for studying entanglement in many-body systems. Under mild hypotheses, the new measures are computable entanglement monotones. Also, they are composable: their evaluation over tensor products can be entirely computed in terms of the evaluations over each factor, by means of a specific group law. In principle, t…

We give a simple formula for finding the spectral norm of d-mode symmetric tensor in two variables over the complex or real numbers in terms of the complex or real roots of a corresponding polynomial in one complex variable. This result implies that the geometric measure of entanglement of symmetric d-qubits is polynomial-time computable. We discuss a generalization to d-mode symmetric tensor in more than two variables.
We consider the transformation of multi-partite states in the single copy setting under positive-partial-transpose-preserving operations (PPT-operations) and obtain both qualitative and quantitative results. Firstly, for some pure state transformations that are impossible under local operations and classical communication (LOCC), we demonstrate that they become possible with a surprisingly large success probability under PPT-operations. Furthermore, we clarify the convertibility of arbitrary multipartite pure states under PPT-operations, and show that a drastic simplification in the classifica…
We show how to find families of infima and suprema for the entanglement negativity using only a few, low-order moments of the partially transposed density matrix $ρ^{T_2}.$ These moments can be measured using the multi-copy quantum circuits previously given by the author, which define a set of multi-copy expectation values and thus can be used with the replica trick. As such, these bounds are suitable for use with Quantum Monte Carlo methods, and the lower order versions of the estimates may be experimentally accessible for some systems. Using more moments for higher-order versions of these me…
Entanglement witnesses (EWs) are a fundamental tool for the detection of entanglement. We investigate the inertias of bipartite EWs constructed by the partial transpose of NPT states. Furthermore, we find out most of the inertias of the patial transpose of the two-qutrit bipartite NPT states. As an application, we extend our results to high dimensional states.
A class of lower bounds for the entanglement cost of any quantum state was recently introduced in [arXiv:2111.02438] in the form of entanglement monotones known as the tempered robustness and tempered negativity. Here we extend their definitions to point-to-point quantum channels, establishing a lower bound for the asymptotic entanglement cost of any channel, whether finite or infinite dimensional. This leads, in particular, to a bound that is computable as a semidefinite program and that can outperform previously known lower bounds, including ones based on quantum relative entropy. In the cou…
We investigate separability and entanglement of mixed states in ${\cal C}^2\otimes{\cal C}^2\otimes{\cal C}^N$ three party quantum systems. We show that all states with positive partial transposes that have rank $\le N$ are separable. For the 3 qubit case (N=2) we prove that all states $ρ$ that have positive partial transposes and rank 3 are separable. We provide also constructive separability checks for the states $ρ$ that have the sum of the rank of $ρ$ and the ranks of partial transposes with respect to all subsystems smaller than 15N-1.
We study the separability of symmetric bipartite quantum states and show that a single correlation measurement is sufficient to detect the entanglement of any bipartite symmetric state with a non-positive partial transpose. We also discuss entanglement conditions and entanglement witnesses for states with a positive partial transpose.
Negativity is regarded as an important measure of entanglement in quantum information theory. In contrast to other measures of entanglement, it is easily computable for bipartite states in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper, based on the negativity and realignment, we provide a set of entanglement-sharing constraints for multipartite states, where the entanglement is not necessarily limited to bipartite and pure states, thus aiding in the quantification of constraints for entanglement-sharing. These may find applications in studying many-body systems.
We show that there cannot exist a straightforward generalization of the famous positive partial transpose criterion to three-by-three systems. We call straightforward generalizations that use a finite set of positive maps and arbitrary local rotations of the tested two-partite state. In particular, we show that a family of extreme positive maps discussed in a paper by Ha and Kye, cannot be replaced by a finite set of witnesses in the task of entanglement detection in three-by-three systems. In a more mathematically elegant parlance, our result says that the convex cone of positive maps of the …
Entanglement witnesses (EWs) are a fundamental tool for the detection of entanglement. We study the inertias of EWs, i.e., the triplet of the numbers of negative, zero, and positive eigenvalues respectively. We focus on the EWs constructed by the partial transposition of states with non-positive partial transposes. We provide a method to generate more inertias from a given inertia by the relevance between inertias. Based on that we exhaust all the inertias for EWs in each qubit-qudit system. We apply our results to propose a separability criterion in terms of the rank of the partial transpose …
We show that all quantum states that do not have a positive partial transpose are distillable via channels, which preserve the positivity of the partial transpose. The question whether NPT bound entanglement exist is therefore closely related to the connection between the set of separable superoperators and PPT-preserving maps.
We present a measure of entanglement that can be computed effectively for any mixed state of an arbitrary bipartite system. We show that it does not increase under local manipulations of the system, and use it to obtain a bound on the teleportation capacity and on the distillable entanglement of mixed states.
We provide a generalization of the reduction and Robertson positive maps in matrix algebras. They give rise to a new class of optimal entanglement witnesses. Their structural physical approximation is analyzed. As a byproduct we provide a new examples of PPT (Positive Partial Transpose) entangled states.
We show that any state which violates the computable cross norm (or realignment) criterion for separability also violates the separability criterion of the local uncertainty relations. The converse is not true. The local uncertainty relations provide a straightforward construction of nonlinear entanglement witnesses for the cross norm criterion.
The partial transpose of density matrices in many-body quantum systems, in which one takes the transpose only for a subsystem of the full Hilbert space, has been recognized as a useful tool to diagnose quantum entanglement. It can be used, for example, to define the (logarithmic) negativity. For fermionic systems, it has been known that the partial transpose of Gaussian fermionic density matrices is not Gaussian. In this work, we propose to use partial time-reversal transformation to define (an analog of) the entanglement negativity and related quantities. We demonstrate that for the symmetry-…
Unlike the entanglement of quantum states, very little is known about the entanglement of bipartite channels, called dynamical entanglement. Here we work with the partial transpose of a superchannel, and use it to define computable measures of dynamical entanglement, such as the negativity. We show that a version of it, the max-logarithmic negativity, represents the exact asymptotic dynamical entanglement cost. We discover a family of dynamical entanglement measures that provide necessary and sufficient conditions for bipartite channel simulation under local operations and classical communicat…
A general and computable criterion for k-(in)separability in continuous multipartite quantum systems is presented. The criterion can be experimentally implemented with a finite and comparatively low number of local observables. We discuss in detail how the detection quality can be optimised.
We discuss particle entanglement in systems of indistinguishable bosons and fermions, in finite Hilbert spaces, with focus on operational measures of quantum correlations. We show how to use von Neumann entropy, Negativity and entanglement witnesses in these cases, proving interesting relations. We obtain analytic expressions to quantify quantum correlations in homogeneous D-dimensional Hamiltonian models with certain symmetries.
The absolute separability problem asks for a characterization of the quantum states $ρ\in M_m\otimes M_n$ with the property that $UρU^\dagger$ is separable for all unitary matrices $U$. We investigate whether or not it is the case that $ρ$ is absolutely separable if and only if $UρU^\dagger$ has positive partial transpose for all unitary matrices $U$. In particular, we develop an easy-to-use method for showing that an entanglement witness or positive map is unable to detect entanglement in any such state, and we apply our method to many well-known separability criteria, including the range cri…
In this letter we have analyzed an entangled state in $C^{3} \bigotimes C^{3}$ having a positive partial transposition and have shown that it is an edge state. Further we have constructed explicitly a witness operator $W$ which detects the entanglement.
Entangled states with a positive partial transpose (so-called PPT states) are central to many interesting problems in quantum theory. On one hand, they are considered to be weakly entangled, since no pure state entanglement can be distilled from them. On the other hand, it has been shown recently that some of these PPT states exhibit genuinely high-dimensional entanglement, i.e. they have a high Schmidt number. Here we investigate $d\times d$ dimensional PPT states for $d\ge 4$ discussed recently by Sindici and Piani, and by generalizing their methods to the calculation of Schmidt numbers we s…
We introduce an intuitive measure of genuine multipartite entanglement which is based on the well-known concurrence. We show how lower bounds on this measure can be derived that also meet important characteristics of an entanglement measure. These lower bounds are experimentally implementable in a feasible way enabling quantification of multipartite entanglement in a broad variety of cases.
We propose separability criteria for three-qubit states in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries to detect entanglement with positive partial transposes. We report that the phases, that is, the angular parts of anti-diagonal entries, play a crucial role in determining whether a given three-qubit state is separable or entangled, and they must obey even an identity for separability in some cases. These criteria are strong enough to detect PPT (positive partial transpose) entanglement with nonzero volume. In several cases when all the entries are zero except for diagonal and anti-diagonal e…
Communication rates over quantum channels can be boosted by entanglement, via superadditivity phenomena or entanglement assistance. Superadditivity refers to the capacity improvement from entangling inputs across multiple channel uses. Nevertheless, when unlimited entanglement assistance is available, the entanglement between channel uses becomes unnecessary -- the entanglement-assisted (EA) capacity of a single-sender and single-receiver channel is additive. We generalize the additivity of EA capacity to general multiple-access channels (MACs) for the total communication rate. Furthermore, fo…
Based on the matrix realignment and partial transpose, we develop an approach to entangling power and operator entanglement of quantum unitary operators. We demonstrate efficiency of the approach by studying several unitary operators on qudits, and indicate that these two matrix rearrangements are not only powerful for studying separability problem of quantum states, but also useful in studying entangling capabilities of quantum operators.
In this paper, we present a measure of multipartite entanglement ($k$-nonseparable), $k$-ME concurrence $C_{k-\mathrm{ME}}(ρ)$ that unambiguously detects all $k$-nonseparable states in arbitrary dimensions, where the special case, 2-ME concurrence $C_{2-\mathrm{ME}}(ρ)$, is a measure of genuine multipartite entanglement. The new measure $k$-ME concurrence satisfies important characteristics of an entanglement measure including entanglement monotone, vanishing on $k$-separable states, convexity, subadditivity and strictly greater than zero for all $k$-nonseparable states. Two powerful lower bou…
The partial transpose by which a subsystem's quantum state is solely transposed is of unique importance in quantum information processing from both fundamental and practical point of view. In this work, we present a practical scheme to realize a physical approximation to the partial transpose using local measurements on individual quantum systems and classical communication. We then report its linear optical realization and show that the scheme works with no dependence on local basis of given quantum states. A proof-of-principle demonstration of entanglement detection using the physical approx…
The Rains relative entropy of a bipartite quantum state is the tightest known upper bound on its distillable entanglement -- which has a crisp physical interpretation of entanglement as a resource -- and it is efficiently computable by convex programming. It has not been known to be a selective entanglement monotone in its own right. In this work, we strengthen the interpretation of the Rains relative entropy by showing that it is monotone under the action of selective operations that completely preserve the positivity of the partial transpose, reasonably quantifying entanglement. That is, we …
