We show how to find families of infima and suprema for the entanglement negativity using only a few, low-order moments of the partially transposed density matrix $ρ^{T_2}.$ These moments can be measured using the multi-copy quantum circuits previously given by the author, which define a set of multi-copy expectation values and thus can be used with the replica trick. As such, these bounds are suitable for use with Quantum Monte Carlo methods, and the lower order versions of the estimates may be experimentally accessible for some systems. Using more moments for higher-order versions of these methods will produce tighter estimates, unless and until statistical noise causes the measurement of the highest order moment to fail. Should this happen, the data from lower order moments can still be used for lower-order estimates.
We describe a direct method to determine the negativity of an arbitrary two-qubit state in experiments. The method is derived by analyzing the relation between the purity, negativity, and a universal entanglement witness for two-qubit entanglement. We show how the negativity of a two-qubit state can be calculated from just three experimentally accessible moments of the partially transposed density matrix of a two-photon state. Moreover, we show that the negativity can be given as a function of only six invariants, which are linear combinations of nine invariants from the complete set of 21 fun…
In this letter we study the negativity of one dimensional free fermions. We derive the general form of the $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ symmetric term in moments of the partial transposed (reduced) density matrix, which is an algebraic function of the end points of the system. Such a path integral turns out to be a convenient tool for making estimations for the negativity.
We investigate the behavior of the moments of the partially transposed reduced density matrix ρ^{T_2}_A in critical quantum spin chains. Given subsystem A as union of two blocks, this is the (matrix) transposed of ρ_A with respect to the degrees of freedom of one of the two. This is also the main ingredient for constructing the logarithmic negativity. We provide a new numerical scheme for calculating efficiently all the moments of ρ_A^{T_2} using classical Monte Carlo simulations. In particular we study several combinations of the moments which are scale invariant at a critical point. Their be…
We study the scaling of the traces of the integer powers of the partially transposed reduced density matrix and of the entanglement negativity for two spin blocks as function of their length and separation in the critical Ising chain. For two adjacent blocks, we show that tensor network calculations agree with universal conformal field theory (CFT) predictions. In the case of two disjoint blocks the CFT predictions are recovered only after taking into account the finite size corrections induced by the finite length of the blocks.
Entanglement features of the ground state of disordered quantum matter are often captured by an infinite randomness fixed point that, for a variety of models, is the random singlet phase. Although a copious number of studies covers bipartite entanglement in pure states, at present, less is known for mixed states and tripartite settings. Our goal is to gain insights in this direction by studying the negativity spectrum in the random singlet phase. Through the strong disorder renormalization group technique, we derive analytic formulas for the universal scaling of the disorder averaged moments o…
Negativity is a measure of entanglement that can be used both in pure and mixed states. The negativity spectrum is the spectrum of eigenvalues of the partially transposed density matrix, and characterizes the degree and "phase" of entanglement. For pure states, it is simply determined by the entanglement spectrum. We use a diagrammatic method complemented by a modification of the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to find the negativity spectrum in general random tensor networks with large bond dimensions. In holography, these describe the entanglement of fixed-area states. It was found that many fixed-…
In the presence of symmetry, entanglement measures of quantum many-body states can be decomposed into contributions arising from distinct symmetry sectors. Here we investigate the decomposability of negativity, a measure of entanglement between two parts of a generally open system in a mixed state. While the entanglement entropy of a subsystem within a closed system can be resolved according to its total preserved charge, we find that negativity of two subsystems may be decomposed into contributions associated with their charge imbalance. We show that this charge-imbalance decomposition of the…
We study the ground-state entanglement Hamiltonian of several disjoint intervals for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. Its structure consists of a local part and a bi-local term that couples each point to another one in each other interval. The bi-local operator can be either diagonal or mixed in the fermionic chiralities and it is sensitive to the boundary conditions. The knowledge of such entanglement Hamiltonian is the starting point to evaluate the negativity Hamiltonian, i.e. the logarithm of the partially transposed reduced density matrix, which is an operatorial characterisat…
Partial transposition of state operator is a well known tool to detect quantum correlations between two parts of a composite system. In this letter, the global partial transpose (GPT) is linked to conceptually multipartite underlying structures in a state - the negativity fonts. If K-way negativity fonts with non zero determinants exist, then selective partial transposition of a pure state, involving K of the N qubits (K leq N) yields an operator with negative eigevalues, identifying K-body correlations in the state. Expansion of GPT interms of K-way partially transposed (KPT) operators reveal…
We present a method for estimating the probabilities of outcomes of a quantum circuit using Monte Carlo sampling techniques applied to a quasiprobability representation. Our estimate converges to the true quantum probability at a rate determined by the total negativity in the circuit, using a measure of negativity based on the 1-norm of the quasiprobability. If the negativity grows at most polynomially in the size of the circuit, our estimator converges efficiently. These results highlight the role of negativity as a measure of non-classical resources in quantum computation.
A basic diagnostic of entanglement in mixed quantum states is known as the positive partial transpose (PT) criterion. Such criterion is based on the observation that the spectrum of the partially transposed density matrix of an entangled state contains negative eigenvalues, in turn, used to define an entanglement measure called the logarithmic negativity. Despite the great success of logarithmic negativity in characterizing bosonic many-body systems, generalizing the operation of PT to fermionic systems remained a technical challenge until recently when a more natural definition of PT for ferm…
We derive sampling functions for estimation of quantum state fidelity with Schrödinger cat-like states, which are defined as superpositions of two coherent states with opposite amplitudes. We also provide sampling functions for fidelity with squeezed Fock states that can approximate the cat-like states and can be generated from Gaussian squeezed states by conditional photon subtraction. The fidelities can be determined by averaging the sampling functions over quadrature statistics measured by homodyne detection. The sampling functions are designed such that they can compensate for losses and i…
Mixed state entanglement measures can act as a versatile probes of many-body systems. However, they are generally hard to compute, often relying on tricky optimizations. One measure that is straightforward to compute is the logarithmic negativity, yet done naively even this is still limited to small system sizes. Here, we introduce a method to compute the logarithmic negativity for arbitrary subsystems of a densely represented state, as well as block subsystems of matrix product states. The method combines lazily evaluated, tensor network representations of the partially transposed density mat…

We study the properties of the discrete Wigner distribution for two qubits introduced by Wotters. In particular, we analyze the entanglement properties within the Wigner distribution picture by considering the negativity of the Wigner function (WF) and the correlations of the marginal distribution. We show that a state is entangled if at least one among the values assumed by the corresponding discrete WF is smaller than a certain critical (negative) value. Then, based on the Partial Transposition criterion, we establish the relation between the separability of a density matrix and the non-nega…
The entanglement quantified by negativity of pure bipartite superposed states is studied. We show that if the entanglement is quantified by the concurrence two pure states of high fidelity to one another still have nearly the same entanglement. Furthermore this conclusion can be guaranteed by our obtained inequality, and the concurrence is shown to be a continuous function even in infinite dimensions. The bounds on the negativity of superposed states in terms of those of the states being superposed are obtained. These bounds can find useful applications in estimating the amount of the entangle…
Both direct and indirect weak nonresonant interactions are shown to produce entanglement between two initially disentangled systems prepared as a tensor product of thermal states, provided the initial temperature is sufficiently low. Entanglement is determined by the Peres-Horodeckii criterion, which establishes that a composite state is entangled if its partial transpose is not positive. If the initial temperature of the thermal states is higher than an upper critical value $T_{uc}$ the minimal eigenvalue of the partially transposed density matrix of the composite state remains positive in th…
A crucial goal of quantum information is to find new ways to exploit the properties of quantum devices as resources. One of the prominent properties of quantum devices of particular interest is their negativity in quasi-probability representations, intensively studied in foundational and practical investigations. In this article, we introduce the concept of Absolute Negativity to characterise the negativity of sets of quantum devices in a basis-independent way. Moreover, we provide a resource theory for our relational notion of Absolute Negativity, which applies to sets of quantum state-measur…
We discuss multipartitions of the gapped ground states of (2+1)-dimensional topological liquids into three (or more) spatial regions that are adjacent to each other and meet at points. By considering the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over a subset of the regions, we compute various correlation measures, such as entanglement negativity, reflected entropy, and associated spectra. We utilize the bulk-boundary correspondence to show that such multipartitions can be achieved by using what we call vertex states in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory -- these are a type of state use…
Quantum state teleportation is a protocol where a shared entangled state is used as a quantum channel to transmit quantum information between distinct locations. Here we consider the task of estimating entanglement in teleportation experiments. We show that the data accessible in a teleportation experiment allows to put a lower bound on some entanglement measures, such as entanglement negativity and robustness. Furthermore, we show cases in which the lower bounds are tight. The introduced lower bounds can also be interpreted as quantifiers of the nonclassicality of a teleportation experiment. …
Time-dependent linear coupling between macroscopic quantum resonator modes generates both a parametric amplification also known as a {}"squeezing operation" and a beam splitter operation, analogous to quantum optical systems. These operations, when applied properly, can robustly generate entanglement and squeezing for the quantum resonator modes. Here, we present such coupling schemes between a nanomechanical resonator and a superconducting electrical resonator using applied microwave voltages as well as between two superconducting lumped-element electrical resonators using a r.f. SQUID-mediat…
Starting with the valence bond solid (VBS) ground state of the 1D AKLT Hamiltonian, we make a partition of the system in 2 subsystems $A$ and $B$, where $A$ is a block of $L$ consecutive spins and $B$ is it's complement. In that setting we compute the partial transpose density matrix with respect to $A$, $ρ^{T_A}$. We obtain the spectrum of the transposed density matrix of the VBS pure system. Subsequently we define two disjoint blocks, $A$ and $B$ containing $L_A$ and $L_B$ spins respectively, separated by $L$ sites. Tracing away the spins which do not belong to $A\cup B$, we find an expressi…
We propose a method for detecting bipartite entanglement in a many-body mixed state based on estimating moments of the partially transposed density matrix. The estimates are obtained by performing local random measurements on the state, followed by post-processing using the classical shadows framework. Our method can be applied to any quantum system with single-qubit control. We provide a detailed analysis of the required number of experimental runs, and demonstrate the protocol using existing experimental data [Brydges et al, Science 364, 260 (2019)].
We review some counterintuitive properties of standard measures describing quantum entanglement and violation of Bell's inequality (often referred to as "nonlocality") in two-qubit systems. By comparing the nonlocality, negativity, concurrence, and relative entropy of entanglement, we show: (i) ambiguity in ordering states with the entanglement measures, (ii) ambiguity of robustness of entanglement in lossy systems and (iii) existence of two-qubit mixed states more entangled than pure states having the same negativity or nonlocality. To support our conclusions, we performed a Monte Carlo simul…

A semiconductor quantum dot (QD) is an attractive resource to generate polarization-entangled photon pairs. We study the excitonic spin precession (flip-flop) in a family of QDs with different excitonic fine-structure splitting (FSS) and its impact on the entanglement of photons generated from the excitonic-biexcitonic radiative cascade. Our results reveal that coherent processes leave the time post-selected entanglement of QDs with finite FSS unaffected while changing the eigenstates of the system. The flip-flop's precession is observed via quantum tomography through anomalous oscillations of…
