We provide a generalization of the reduction and Robertson positive maps in matrix algebras. They give rise to a new class of optimal entanglement witnesses. Their structural physical approximation is analyzed. As a byproduct we provide a new examples of PPT (Positive Partial Transpose) entangled states.
In the recent paper [Chruściński and Wudarski, arXiv:1105.4821], it was conjectured that the entanglement witnesses arising from some generalized Choi maps are optimal. We show that this conjecture is true. Furthermore, we show that they provide a one parameter family of indecomposable optimal entanglement witnesses.
We provide a class of optimal nondecomposable entanglement witnesses for 4N x 4N composite quantum systems or, equivalently, a new construction of nondecomposable positive maps in the algebra of 4N x 4N complex matrices. This construction provides natural generalization of the Robertson map. It is shown that their structural physical approximations give rise to entanglement breaking channels.
We analyze the recently introduced notion of quantumness witness and compare it to that of entanglement witness. We show that any entanglement witness is also a quantumness witness. We then consider some physically relevant examples and explicitly construct some witnesses.
A new family of positive, trace-preserving maps is introduced. It is defined using the mutually unbiased measurements, which generalize the notion of mutual unbiasedness of orthonormal bases. This family allows one to define entanglement witnesses whose indecomposability depends on the characteristics of the associated measurement operators.
We provide two 1-parameter families of indecomposable entanglement witnesses in C4 {\otimes} C4. Following recent paper by Ha and Kye [Phys. Rev. A 84, 024302 (2011)] we show that these EWs are optimal and hence provide the strongest tool in entanglement theory to discriminate between separable and entangled states. As a byproduct we show that these EWs detect quantum entanglement within a family of generalized Horodecki states.
We construct a new class of positive indecomposable maps in the algebra of 'd x d' complex matrices. Each map is uniquely characterized by a cyclic bistochastic matrix. This class generalizes a Choi map for d=3. It provides a new reach family of indecomposable entanglement witnesses which define important tool for investigating quantum entanglement.
We characterize a convex subset of entanglement witnesses for two qutrits. Equivalently, we provide a characterization of the set of positive maps in the matrix algebra of 3 x 3 complex matrices. It turns out that boundary of this set displays elegant representation in terms of SO(2) rotations. We conjecture that maps parameterized by rotations are optimal, i.e. they provide the strongest tool for detecting quantum entanglement. As a byproduct we found a new class of decomposable entanglement witnesses parameterized by improper rotations from the orthogonal group O(2).
We characterize a set of positive maps in matrix algebra of 4x4 complex matrices. Equivalently, we provide a subset of entanglement witnesses parameterized by the rotation group SO(3). Interestingly, these maps/witnesses define two intersecting convex cones in the 3-dimensional parameter space. The existence of two cones is related to the topological structure of the underlying orthogonal group. We perform detailed analysis of the corresponding geometric structure.
We link the study of positive quantum maps, block positive operators, and entanglement witnesses with problems related to multivariate polynomials. For instance, we show how indecomposable block positive operators relate to biquadratic forms that are not sums of squares. Although the general problem of describing the set of positive maps remains open, in some particular cases we solve the corresponding polynomial inequalities and obtain explicit conditions for positivity.
We provide a recurrent construction of entanglement witnesses for a bipartite systems living in a Hilbert space corresponding to $2N$ qubits ($N$ qubits in each subsystem). Our construction provides a new method of generalization of the Robertson map that naturally meshes with $2N$ qubit systems, i.e., its structure respects the $2^{2N}$ growth of the state space. We prove that for $N>1$ these witnesses are indecomposable and optimal. As a byproduct we provide a new family of PPT (Positive Partial Transpose) entangled states.
We study the connection between the Hilbert-Schmidt measure of entanglement (that is the minimal distance of an entangled state to the set of separable states) and entanglement witness in terms of a generalized Bell inequality which distinguishes between entangled and separable states. A method for checking the nearest separable state to a given entangled one is presented. We illustrate the general results by considering isotropic states, in particular 2-qubit and 2-qutrit states -- and their generalizations to arbitrary dimensions -- where we calculate the optimal entanglement witnesses expli…
It is shown that, every entangled state in an infinite-dimensional composite system has a simple entanglement witness of the form $αI+T$ with $α$ a nonnegative number and $T$ a finite rank self-adjoint operator. We also provide two methods of constructing entanglement witness and apply them to obtain some entangled states that cannot be detected by the PPT criterion and the realignment criterion.
From the physical point of view entanglement witnesses define a universal tool for analysis and classification of quantum entangled states. From the mathematical point of view they provide highly nontrivial generalization of positive operators and they find elegant correspondence with the theory of positive maps in matrix algebras. We concentrate on theoretical analysis of various important notions like (in)decomposability, atomicity, optimality, extremality and exposedness. Several methods of construction are provided as well. Our discussion is illustrated by many examples enabling the reader…
We characterize the positive maps detecting the entangled bipartite states of n x n qubits that are diagonal with respect to the orthonormal basis constructed by tensor products of Pauli matrices acting on the totally symmetric state. We then discuss the case n=2 for a class of states completely determined by the geometric patterns of subsets of a 16 point lattice.
We consider entanglement witnesses arising from positive linear maps which generate exposed extremal rays. We show that every entanglement can be detected by one of these witnesses, and this witness detects a unique set of entanglement among those. Therefore, they provide a minimal set of witnesses to detect all entanglement in a sense. Furthermore, if those maps are indecomposable then they detect large classes of entanglement with positive partial transposes which have nonempty relative interiors in the cone generated by all PPT states. We also provide a one parameter family of indecomposabl…
We provide a new extension of entanglement witnesses for $\mathbb{C}^{d_{1}}\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d_{2}}$ systems. Our construction preserves the properties of indecomposability and spanning property of entanglement witnesses. We show how our concept of extended entanglement witnesses is connected with the idea of measurement device independent entanglement witnesses.
Quantum entanglement lies at the heart of quantum mechanical and quantum information processing. Following the question who \emph{witnesses} entanglement witnesses, we show entangled states play as the role of super entanglement witnesses. We show separable states play the role of "super super entanglement witnesses" and "witness" other observables than entanglement witnesses. We show that there exists a hierarchy structure of witnesses and there exist "witnesses" everywhere. Furthermore, we show the properties and characterization of entangled states as super entanglement witnesses. By the ro…
It is shown that entanglement witnesses constructed via the family of spectral conditions are decomposable, i.e. cannot be used to detect bound entanglement. It supports several observations that bound entanglement reveals highly non-spectral features.
We disprove the conjecture that structural physical approximations to optimal entanglement witnesses are separable states. The conjecture holds true for extremal decomposable entanglement witnesses.
We study entanglement witnesses that can be constructed with regard to the geometrical structure of the Hilbert-Schmidt space, i.e. we present how to use these witnesses in the context of quantifying entanglement and the detection of bound entangled states. We give examples for a particular three-parameter family of states that are part of the \emph{magic simplex} of two-qutrit states.
The question under what conditions different witnesses may detect some entangled states simultaneously is answered for both finite- and infinite-dimensional bipartite systems. Finite many different witnesses can detect some entangled states simultaneously if and only if their convex combinations are still witnesses; they can not detect any entangled state simultaneously if and only if the set of their convex combinations contains a positive operator. For two witnesses $W_1$ and $W_2$, some more can be said: (1) $W_1$ and $W_2$ can detect the same set of entangled states if and only if they are…
We establish a relation between concurrence and entanglement witnesses. In particular, we construct entanglement witnesses for three-qubit W and GHZ states in terms of concurrence and different set of operators that generate it. We also generalize our construction for multi-qubit states.
We study entanglement witness and present a construction of entanglement witnesses in terms of the mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs). These witnesses include the entanglement witnesses constructed from mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) as a special case. Comparing with the dimension dependence of MUBs, the witnesses can be always constructed from a complete set of $d+1$ MUMs for any dimension $d$. We show that our witness can detect entanglement better than previous separability criterion given also by MUMs. And the approach can be experimentally implemented.
Entanglement witness is a Hermitian operator that is useful for detecting the genuine multipartite entanglement of mixed states. Nonlinear entanglement witnesses have the advantage of a wider detection range in the entangled region. We construct genuine entanglement witnesses for four qubits density matrices in the mutually unbiased basis. First, we find the convex feasible region with positive partial transpose states. Then, to reveal the entangled regions, we present some appropriate linear entanglement witnesses and, we find the envelope of this family of linear witnesses as a nonlinear wit…
We provide a canonical form of mixed states in bipartite quantum systems in terms of a convex combination of a separable state and a, so-called, edge state. We construct entanglement witnesses for all edge states. We present a canonical form of nondecomposable entanglement witnesses and the corresponding positive maps. We provide constructive methods for their optimization in a finite number of steps. We present a characterization of separable states using a special class of entanglement witnesses. Finally, we present a nontrivial necessary condition for entanglement witnesses and positive map…
In this paper, we present a characterization of optimal entanglement witnesses in terms of positive maps and then provide a general method of checking optimality of entanglement witnesses. Applying it, we obtain new indecomposable optimal witnesses which have no spanning property. These also provide new examples which support a recent conjecture saying that the so-called structural physical approximations to optimal positive maps (optimal entanglement witnesses) give entanglement breaking maps (separable states).
In this paper, we discuss extremal extensions of entanglement witnesses based on Choi's map. The constructions are based on a generalization of the Choi map due to Osaka, from which we construct entanglement witnesses. These extremal extensions are powerful in terms of their capacity to detect entanglement of positive under partial transpose (PPT) entangled states and lead to unearthing of entanglement of new PPT states. We also use the Cholesky-like decomposition to construct entangled states which are revealed by these extremal entanglement witnesses.
Entanglement witnesses provide a standard tool for the analysis of entanglement in experiments. We investigate possible nonlinear entanglement witnesses from several perspectives. First, we demonstrate that they can be used to show that the set of separable states has no facets. Second, we give a new derivation of nonlinear witnesses based on covariance matrices. Finally, we investigate extensions to the multipartite case.
We examine various notions related with the optimality for entanglement witnesses arising from Choi type positive linear maps. We found examples of optimal entanglement witnesses which are non-decomposable, but which are not `non-decomposable optimal entanglement witnesses' in the sense of [M. Lewenstein, B. Kraus, J. Cirac, and P. Horodecki, Phys. Rev. A 62, 052310 (2000)]. We suggest to use the term `PPTES witness' and `optimal PPTES witness' in the places of `non-decomposable entanglement witness' and `non-decomposable optimal entanglement witnesses' in order to avoid possible confusion. We…
We derive an experimentally observable lower bound on concurrence of mixed quantum states in terms of an entanglement witness, relating measurements on single states with those on two copies.
Linear and nonlinear entanglement witnesses for a given bipartite quantum systems are constructed. Using single particle feasible region, a way of constructing effective entanglement witnesses for bipartite systems is provided by exact convex optimization. Examples for some well known two qutrit quantum systems show these entanglement witnesses in most cases, provide necessary and sufficient conditions for separability of given bipartite system. Also this method is applied to a class of bipartite qudit quantum systems with details for d=3, 4 and 5. Keywords: non-linear and linear entanglement …
We show that each entanglement witness detecting given bipartite entangled state provides an estimation of its concurrence. We illustrate our result with several well known examples of entanglement witnesses and compare the corresponding estimation of concurrence with other estimations provided by the trace norm of partial transposition and realignment.
We interpret multi-partite genuine entanglement witnesses as simultaneous positivity of various maps arising from them. We apply this result to multi-qubit {\sf X}-shaped Hermitian matrices, and characterize the conditions for them to be genuine entanglement witnesses, in terms of entries. Furthermore, we find all optimal ones among them. They turn out to have the spanning properties, and so they detect non-zero volume set of multi-qubit genuine entanglement. We also characterize decomposability for {\sf X}-shaped entanglement witnesses.
We construct three-qubit entanglement witnesses with the properties that all the partial transposes have the spanning properties. These witnesses determine faces for separable states whose interior lies in the interior of PPT states, and so they detect sets of PPT entangled states with nonempty interiors. These witnesses also detect all kinds of bi-separable pure product states. Our construction depends on the observation that multi-partite entanglement witnesses correspond to multi-linear maps which are positive.
Entanglement witnesses are observables which when measured, detect entanglement in a measured composed system. It is shown what kind of relations between eigenvectors of an observable should be fulfilled, to allow an observable to be an entanglement witness. Some restrictions on the signature of entaglement witnesses, based on an algebraic-geometrical theorem will be given. The set of entanglement witnesses is linearly isomorphic to the set of maps between matrix algebras which are positive, but not completely positive. A translation of the results to the language of positive maps is also give…
We give a universal recipe for constructing nonlinear entanglement witnesses able to detect non-classical correlations in arbitrary systems of distinguishable and/or identical particles for an arbitrary number of constituents. The constructed witnesses are expressed in terms of expectation values of observables. As such they are, at least in principle, measurable in experiments
We show that macroscopic thermodynamical properties - such as functions of internal energy and magnetization - can detect quantum entanglement in solids at nonzero temperatures in the thermodynamical limit. We identify the parameter regions (critical values of magnetic field and temperature) within which entanglement is witnessed by these thermodynamical quantities.
The ultrafine entanglement witness, introduced in [F. Shahandeh, M. Ringbauer, J.C. Loredo, and T.C. Ralph, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{118}, 110502 (2017)], can seamlessly and easily improve any standard entanglement witness. In this paper, by combining the constraint and the test operators, we rotate the hyperplane determined by the test operator and improve further the original ultrafine entanglement witness. In particular, we present a series of new ultrafine entanglement witnesses, which not only can detect entangled states that the original ultrafine entanglement witnesses cannot detect, bu…
The geometric measure of entanglement is an approach to quantifying entanglement that is based on the Hilbert-space distance (or, equivalently, angle) between pure states and their best unentangled approximants. An entanglement witness is an operator that reveals entanglement for a given entangled state. A connection is identified between entanglement witnesses and the geometric measure of entanglement. This offers a new interpretation of the geometric measure of entanglement of a state, and renders it experimentally verifiable, doing so most readily for states that are pure.
We construct three-qubit entanglement witnesses with relatively simple structures. Despite their simplicity, these witnesses are capable of detecting a number of bound entangled states more effectively. To illustrate this, two families of bound entangled three-qubit states, introduced by Kay [Phys. Rev. A 83, 020303 (2011)] and Kye [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48, 235303 (2015)], are considered and it is shown that these witnesses are able to detect the entanglement of all states in the families.
We present very simple method for constructing indecomposable entanglement witnesses out of a given pair -- an entanglement witness W and the corresponding state detected by W. This method may be used to produce new classes of atomic witnesses which are able to detect the `weakest' quantum entanglement. Actually, it works perfectly in the multipartite case, too. Moreover, this method provides a powerful tool for constructing new examples of bound entangled states.
We study entanglement witness and present a construction of entanglement witnesses in terms of the symmetric informationally complete measurements (SIC-POVM). The capability of our witness is shown by some examples and it can be found this witness detects more entanglement than previous separability method given also by SIC-POVM. What's more, comparing with the dimension dependence of SIC-POVM, we also give the entanglement witnesses can be always constructed from general symmetric informationally complete measurements (GSIC-POVM).
Entanglement detection typically relies on linear inequalities for mean values of certain observables (entanglement witnesses), where violation indicates entanglement. We provide a general method to improve any of these inequalities for bipartite systems via nonlinear expressions. The nonlinearities are of different orders and can be directly measured in experiments, often without any extra effort.
In this study, the spin-momentum correlation of one massive spin-1/2 and spin-1 particle states, which are made based on projection of a relativistic spin operator into timelike direction is investigated. It is shown that by using Non-Linear entanglement witnesses (NLEWs), the effect of Lorentz transformation would decrease both the amount and the region of entanglement.
We derive a set of algebraic equations, the so-called multipartite separability eigenvalue equations. Based on their solutions, we introduce a universal method for the construction of multipartite entanglement witnesses. We witness multipartite entanglement of $10^3$ coupled quantum oscillators, by solving our basic equations analytically. This clearly demonstrates the feasibility of our method for studying ultra-high orders of multipartite entanglement in complex quantum systems.
Entanglement witnesses (EWs) are a fundamental tool for the detection of entanglement. We investigate the inertias of bipartite EWs constructed by the partial transpose of NPT states. Furthermore, we find out most of the inertias of the patial transpose of the two-qutrit bipartite NPT states. As an application, we extend our results to high dimensional states.
It is shown that the enhanced (nonlinear) realignment criterion is equivalent to the family of linear criteria based on correlation tensor. These criteria generalize the original (linear) realignment criterium and give rise to the family of entanglement witnesses. An appropriate limiting procedure is proposed which leads to a novel class of witnesses which are as powerful as the enhanced realignment criterion.
We analyze special class of bipartite states - so called Bell diagonal states. In particular we provide new examples of bound entangled Bell diagonal states and construct the class of entanglement witnesses diagonal in the magic basis.
The controlled generation of entangled states and their subsequent detection are integral aspects of quantum information science. In this work, we analyse the application of nonlinear witnesses to the verification of entanglement, and we demonstrate experimentally that nonlinear witnesses perform significantly better than linear witnesses. Specifically, we demonstrate that a single non- linear entanglement witness is able to determine to a high degree of certainty that a mixed state containing orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement of specific forms is entangled for any relative phase and…
The problem of demonstrating entanglement is central to quantum information processing applications. Resorting to standard entanglement witnesses requires one to perfectly trust the implementation of the measurements to be performed on the entangled state, which may be an unjustified assumption. Inspired by the recent work of F. Buscemi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 200401 (2012)], we introduce the concept of Measurement-Device-Independent Entanglement Witnesses (MDI-EWs), which allow one to demonstrate entanglement of all entangled quantum states with untrusted measurement apparatuses. We show how t…
Optomechanical systems open new possibilities in fundamental research at the interface between quantum information and gravity. Recently, an ambitious experimental proposal was suggested by Bose et al. to measure the entanglement between two optomechanical systems generated by their gravitational interaction. The scheme relies on witnessing entanglement between the two systems. Here we develop a general framework to study the quality of bipartite entanglement witnesses using fidelity witnesses. We then apply this framework to the gravitational entanglement proposal, optimizing for the detectio…
I explore entanglement dynamics in a three qubit system comparing the ability of entanglement witnesses to detect tri-partite entanglement to the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death (ESD). Using a system subject to dephasing I invoke entanglement witnesses to detect tri-partite GHZ and W-type entanglement and compare the evolution of their detection capabilites with the evolution of the negativity, bi-partite concurrence, and tri-partite negativity. Interestingly, I find a state in which there is no concurrence or tri-partite negativity but there is entanglement. Finally, I utilize a three…
