Let $F$ be a linear combination of $N\geq 1$ Dirichlet $L$-functions attached to even (or odd) primitive characters with the same modulus. Selberg proved that a positive proportion of non-trivial zeros of $F$ lie on the critical line. Our work here is to provide an explicit lower bound for this proportion. In particular, we show that the lower bound $2.16\times 10^{-6}/(N\log N)$ is admissible for large $N$.
In this paper we study sums of Dirichlet series whose coefficients are terms of the Thue-Morse sequence and variations thereof. We find closed-form expressions for such sums in terms of known constants and functions including the Riemann zeta function and the Dirichlet eta function using elementary methods.
In this paper, we study the number of additional zeros of Dirichlet $L$-function caused by multiplicity by using Asymptotic Large Sieve. Then in asymptotic terms we prove that there are more than 80.124% of zeros of the family of Dirichlet $L$-functions are distinct and more than 60.248% of zeros of the family of Dirichlet $L$-functions are simple. In addition, assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we improve these proportions to 83.216% and 66.433%.
This text shows the existence of large (3.54 times the average) gaps between consecutive zeros, on the critical line, of some Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(s,χ),$ with $χ$ being an even primitive Dirichlet character.
We show that for a positive proportion of real primitive Dirichlet characters chi, the associated Dirichlet L-function L(s,chi) has no zeros on the positive real axis. Prior to this it was not known whether or not there were infinitely many L-functions (from any family) with no positive real zeros.
The aim of this paper is to improve the upper bound for the exceptional zeroes $β_0$ of Dirichlet $L$-functions. We do this by improving on explicit estimate for $L'(σ, χ)$ for $σ$ close to unity.
We use the Asymptotic Large Sieve and Levinson's method to obtain lower bounds for the proportion of simple zeros on the critical line of the twists by primitive Dirichlet characters of a fixed L-function of degree 1,2, or 3.
This paper improves the upper bound for the exceptional zeroes of Dirichlet L-functions with even characters. The result is obtained by improving on explicit estimate for $L'(σ;χ)$ for $σ$ close to unity, using a result on the average of Dirichlet characters, and on the lower bound for $L(1;χ)$, with computational aid.
We consider a certain class of multiplicative functions $f: \mathbb N \rightarrow \mathbb C$ and study the distribution of zeros of Dirichlet polynomials $F_N(s)= \sum_{n\le N} f(n)n^{-s}$ corresponding to these functions. We prove that the known non-trivial zero-free half plane for Dirichlet polynomials associated to this class of multiplicative functions is optimal. We also introduce a characterization of elements in this class based on a new parameter depending on the Dirichlet series $F(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty f(n) n^{-s}$. In this context, we obtain non-trivial regions in which the associa…
The purpose of this paper is to generalize our earlier work on the logarithm of the Riemann zeta-function to linear combinations of logarithms of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions with constant real coefficients. Under the assumption of suitable hypotheses, we prove that as $T\to \infty $, a sequence of the form $(a_1\log|L(ρ,χ_n)|+\dots+a_1\log|L(ρ,χ_n)|)$ has an approximate Gaussian distribution with mean $0$ and variance $ \tfrac{1}{2}\big({a_1}^2+\dots+{a_n}^2 \big)\log\log T$. Here $a_1, \dots, a_n \in \mathbb{R}$, each of the $χ_i$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M_i$ with $M_…
In this paper we obtain some new estimates for the number of large values of Dirichlet polynomials. Our results imply new zero density estimates for the Riemann zeta function which give a small improvement on results of Bourgain and Jutila.
We prove an upper bound on the density of zeros very close to the critical line of the family of Dirichlet $L$-functions of modulus $q$ at height $T$. To do this, we derive an asymptotic for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions uniformly in $q$ and $t$. As a second application of the asymptotic formula we prove that, for every integer $q$, at least $38.2\%$ of zeros of the primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions of modulus $q$ lie on the critical line.
In this work, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the twisted mean square of a Dirichlet $L$-function with a longer mollifier, whose coefficients are also more general than before. As an application we obtain that, for every Dirichlet $L$-function, more than 41.72\% of zeros are on the critical line and more than 40.74\% of zeros are simple and on the critical line. These proportions also improve previous results which were proved only for the Riemann zeta-function.
Using elementary methods,we obtain simple, explicit expressions and bounds of higher order derivatives of Hurwitz zeta function and consequently those of Dirichlet L-function and also,of Lerch's Zeta function at unity (and at Zero too)and also obtain their interrelations. We also state elementary complete forms of approximate functional equations of Hurwitz zeta function and Dirichlet L-function in the critical strip.
We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition in order that a semi-plane of the form $\Re(s)>r$, $r\in \mathbb{R}$, is free of zeros of a given Dirichlet polynomial. The result may be considered a natural generalization of a well-known criterion for the truth of the Riemann hypothesis due to Báez-Duarte. An analog for the case of Dirichlet polynomials of a result of Burnol which is closely related to Báez-Duarte's one is also established.
We show, for any $q\ge 3$ and distinct reduced residues $a,b \pmod q$, the existence of certain hypothetical sets of zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions lying off the critical line implies that $π(x;q,a)<π(x;q,b)$ for a set of real $x$ of asymptotic density 1.
In this paper, we compute the one-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions in a family weighted by special values of Dirichlet $L$-functions at a fixed $s \in [1/2, 1)$. We verify both Fazzari's conjecture and the first author's conjecture on the weighted one-level density for our family of $L$-functions.
Yıldırım has classified zeros of the derivatives of Dirichlet $L$-functions into trivial zeros, nontrivial zeros and vagrant zeros. In this paper we remove the possibility of vagrant zeros for $L'(s,χ)$ when the conductors are large to some extent. Then we improve asymptotic formulas for the number of zeros of $L'(s,χ)$ in $\{s\in\mathbb{C}:\operatorname{Re}(s)>0, |\operatorname{Im}(s)|\leq T\}$. We also establish analogues of Speiser's theorem, which characterize the generalized Riemann hypothesis for $L(s,χ)$ in terms of zeros of $L'(s,χ)$, when the conductor is large.
Assuming a conjecture on distinct zeros of Dirichlet L-functions we get asymptotic results on the average number of representations of an integer as the sum of two primes in arithmetic progression. On the other hand the existence of good error terms gives information on the the location of zeros of L-functions and possible Siegel zeros. Similar results are obtained for an integer in a congruence class expressed as the sum of two primes.
We compute the one-level density for the family of cubic Dirichlet $L$-functions when the support of the Fourier transform of a test function is in $(-1,1)$. We also establish the Ratios conjecture prediction for the one-level density for this family, and confirm that it agrees with the one-level density we obtain.
A new zerofree region of the Riemann Zeta-function $ζ$ is identified by using Turán's localization criterion linking zeros of $ζ$ with uniform local suprema of sets of Dirichlet polynomials expanded over the primes. The proof is based on a randomization argument. An estimate for local extrema for some finite families of shifted Dirichlet polynomials, % associated to linearly independent sequences of reals is established by preliminary considering their local increment properties, by means of Montgomery-Vaughan's variant of Hilbert's inequality. A covering argument combined with Turán's localiz…
Zeros of the Riemann zeta function and its derivatives have been studied by many mathematicians. Among, the number of zeros and the distribution of the real part of non-real zeros of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function have been investigated by Berndt, Levinson, Montgomery, Akatsuka, and the author. Berndt, Levinson, and Montgomery investigated the unconditional case, while Akatsuka and the author gave sharper estimates under the truth of the Riemann hypothesis. In this paper, we prove similar results related to the first derivative of the Dirichlet $L$-functions associated with primi…
In this paper, we give Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients that have Riemann's functional equation and real zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions. The details are as follows. Let $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet $L$-function and $G(χ)$ be the Gauss sum associate with a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ (${\rm{mod}} \,\, q$). Put $f (s,χ) := q^s L(s,χ) + i^{-κ(χ)} G(χ) L(s,\overlineχ)$, where $\overlineχ$ is the complex conjugate of $χ$ and $κ(χ) :=(1-χ(-1))/2$. Then we prove that $f (s,χ)$ satisfies Riemann's functional equation appearing in Hamburger's theorem if $χ$ is even. In addition, we show…
Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we show using the asymptotic large sieve that 91% of the zeros of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions are simple. This improves on earlier work of Özlük which gives a proportion of at most 86%. We further compute an $q$-analogue of the Pair Correlation Function $F(α)$ averaged over all primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions in the range $|α| < 2$ . Previously such a result was available only when the average included all the characters $χ$.
Let $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet $L$-function associated to a non-principal primitive character $χ$ modulo $q$ with $3\le q \le 400\,000$. We prove a new explicit zero-free region for $L(s,χ)$: $L(s,χ)$ does not vanish in the region $\Re s \ge 1-\frac1{R \log \left(q\max(1,| \Im s|)\right) }$ with $R=5.60$. This improves a result of McCurley where $9.65$ was shown to be an admissible value for $R$.
We compute the one-level density of zeros of order $\ell$ Dirichlet $L$-functions over function fields $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ for $\ell=3,4$ in the Kummer setting ($q\equiv1\pmod{\ell}$) and for $\ell=3,4,6$ in the non-Kummer setting ($q\not\equiv1\pmod{\ell}$). In each case, we obtain a main term predicted by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and lower order terms not predicted by RMT. We also confirm the symmetry type of the families is unitary, supporting Katz and Sarnak's philosophy.
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions by applying the $L$-functions Ratios Conjecture. We observe a transition in the main term as was predicted by the Katz-Sarnak heuristic as well as in the lower order terms when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding test function reaches the point $1$. Our results are consistent with those obtained in previous work under GRH and are furthermore analogous to results of Rudnick in the function field case.
In this paper, we compute and verify the positivity of the Li coefficients for the Dirichlet $L$-functions using an arithmetic formula established in Omar and Mazhouda, J. Number Theory 125 (2007) no.1, 50-58; J. Number Theory 130 (2010) no.4, 1109-1114. Furthermore, we formulate a criterion for the partial Riemann hypothesis and we provide some numerical evidence for it using new formulas for the Li coefficients.
Katz and Sarnak conjectured that the statistics of low-lying zeros of various family of $L$-functions matched with the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the random matrix theory. In this paper we confirm this statistic for a family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions matches up with corresponding statistic in the random unitary ensemble, in a range that includes the off-diagonal contribution. To estimate the $n$-level density of zeros of the $L$-functions, we use the asymptotic large sieve method developed by Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan. For the random matrix side, a formula from Conrey…
The Density Conjecture of Katz and Sarnak associates a classical compact group to each reasonable family of $L$-functions. Under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, Rubinstein computed the $n$-level density of low-lying zeros for the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions in the case that the Fourier transform $\hat{f}(u)$ of any test function $f$ is supported in the region $\sum^n_{j=1}u_j < 1$ and showed that the result agrees with the Density Conjecture. In this paper, we improve Rubinstein's result on computing the $n$-level density for the Fourier transform $\hat{f}…
Let $a=(a_n)_{n\ge 1}$ be a periodic sequence, $F_a(s)$ the meromorphic continuation of $\sum_{n\ge 1} a_n/n^s$, and $N_a(σ_1, σ_2, T)$ the number of zeros of $F_a(s)$, counted with their multiplicities, in the rectangle $σ_1 < \Re s < σ_2$, $|\Im s | \le T$. We extend previous results of Laurinčikas, Kaczorowski, Kulas, and Steuding, by showing that if $F_a(s)$ is not of the form $P(s) L_χ (s)$, where $P(s)$ is a Dirichlet polynomial and $L_χ(s)$ a Dirichlet L-function, then there exists an $η=η(a)>0$ such that for all $1/2 < σ_1 < σ_2 < 1+η$, we have $c_1 T \le N_a(σ_1, σ_2, T) \le c_2 T$ fo…
Hoffstein and Hulse recently introduced the notion of shifted convolution Dirichlet series for pairs of modular forms $f_1$ and $f_2$. The second two authors investigated certain special values of symmetrized sums of such functions, numbers which are generally expected to be mysterious transcendental numbers. They proved that the generating functions of these values in $h$-aspect are linear combinations of mixed mock modular forms and quasimodular forms. Here we examine the special cases when $f_1=f_2$ where, in addition, there is a prime $p$ for which $p^2$ divides the level. We prove that th…
We study the $1$-level density of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions attached to real primitive characters of conductor at most $X$. Under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we give an asymptotic expansion of this quantity in descending powers of $\log X$, which is valid when the support of the Fourier transform of the corresponding even test function $ϕ$ is contained in $(-2,2)$. We uncover a phase transition when the supremum $σ$ of the support of $\hat ϕ$ reaches $1$, both in the main term and in the lower order terms. A new lower order term appearing at $σ=1$ involves the quantity…
In this paper, we investigate the distribution of the imaginary parts of zeros near the real axis of Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to the quadratic characters $χ_{p}(\cdot)=(\cdot |p)$ with $p$ a prime number. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we compute the one-level density for the zeros of this family of $L$-functions under the condition that the Fourier transform of the test function is supported on a closed subinterval of $(-1,1)$. We also write down the ratios conjecture for this family of $L$-functions a la Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer and derive a conjecture for t…
Let $L(s,χ)$ be a fixed Dirichlet $L$-function. Given a vertical arithmetic progression of $T$ points on the line $\Re(s)=1/2$, we show that $\gg T \log T$ of them are not zeros of $L(s,χ)$. This result provides some theoretical evidence towards the conjecture that all ordinates of zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions are linearly independent over the rationals. We also establish an upper bound (depending upon the progression) for the first member of the arithmetic progression that is not a zero of $L(s,χ)$.
Random matrix theory has successfully modeled many systems in physics and mathematics, and often the analysis and results in one area guide development in the other. Hughes and Rudnick computed $1$-level density statistics for low-lying zeros of the family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions of fixed prime conductor $Q$, as $Q \to \infty$, and verified the unitary symmetry predicted by random matrix theory. We compute $1$- and $2$-level statistics of the analogous family of Dirichlet $L$-functions over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$. Whereas the Hughes-Rudnick results were restricted by the support of the…
In this paper we consider Dirichlet series absolutely converging for $σ>1$ with an Euler product, natural bounds on the coefficients and satisfying orthogonality relations of Selberg type. Let $N\geq 1$, $F_1(s),...,F_N(s)$ be as above and $P(X_1,...,X_N)$ be a non-monomial polynomial with coefficients in the ring of $p$-finite Dirichlet series absolutely converging for $σ\geq 1$; then $P(F_1(s),\ldots,F_N(s))$ has infinitely many zeros for $σ>1$. Our result in particular applies to Artin $L$-functions, automorphic $L$-functions under the Ramanujan conjecture, and the elements of the Selberg c…
We continue our examination the effects of certain hypothetical configurations of zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions lying off the critical line ("barriers") on the relative magnitude of the functions $π_{q,a}(x)$. Here $π_{q,a}(x)$ is the number of primes $\le x$ in the progression $a \mod q$. In particular, we construct barriers so that $π_{q,1}(x)$ is simultaneously greater than, or simultaneously less than, each of $k$ functions $π_{q,a_i}(x)$ ($1\le i\le k$). We also construct barriers so that only a small number of the $r!$ possible orderings of functions $π_{q,a_i}(x)$ ($1\le i\le r$) occ…
