In this paper we construct a family of Hamilton-Jacobi separable non-linear $\mathbb{S}^1\times\mathbb{S}^1$ Sigma models for which the kink variety can be analytically identified and for which the linear stability of the emerging kinks is ensured. Furthermore, a model with only one vacuum point is found, where all kinks are forced to be non-topological. The non-simply connectedness of the torus guarantees the global stability of all the non-topological kinks in these models.
We describe the kink solitary waves of a massive non-linear sigma model with an ${\mathbb S}^2$ sphere as the target manifold. Our solutions form a moduli space of non-relativistic solitary waves in the long wavelength limit of ferromagnetic linear spin chains.
The stability of the kinks of the non-linear ${\mathbb S}^2$-sigma model discovered in Phys. Rev. Lett. 101(2008)131602 is discussed from several points of view. After a direct estimation of the spectra of the second-order fluctuation operators around topological kinks, first-order field equations are proposed to distinguish between BPS and non-BPS kinks. The one-loop mass shifts caused by quantum fluctuations around the topological kinks are computed using the Cahill-Comtet-Glauber formula proposed in Phys. Lett. 64B(1976)283. The (lack of) stability of the non-topological kinks is unveiled b…
We consider topological solitons in the CP^n sigma models in two space dimensions. In particular, we study "kinks", which are independent of one coordinate up to a rotation of the target space, and "chains", which are periodic in one coordinate up to a rotation of the target space. Kinks and chains both exhibit constituents, similar to monopoles and calorons in SU(n) Yang-Mills-Higgs and Yang-Mills theories. We examine the constituent structure using Lie algebras.
In this work, we investigate the solutions of vortices in the O(3)-sigma model with the gauge field governed by the Chern-Simons term and subject to a hyperbolic self-dual potential. We show that this model admits both topological and nontopological solitons solutions. By means of numerical analysis, we realize that the topological solutions of the model can be transformed into compacton-like solutions. On the other hand, after modifying the model by the introduction of a dielectric constant, an interesting feature appears; namely, the nontopological solutions can be transformed into kink-like…
Massive maximally-supersymmetric sigma models are shown to exhibit multiple static kink-domain wall solutions that preserve 1/2 of the supersymmetry. The kink moduli space admits a natural Kahler metric. We examine in some detail the case when the target of the sigma model is given by the co-tangent bundle of CP^n equipped with the Calabi metric, and we show that there exist BPS solutions corresponding to n kinks at arbitrary separation. We also describe how 1/4-BPS charged and intersecting domain walls are described in the low-energy dynamics on the kink moduli space. We comment on the simila…
One-loop corrections to kink masses in a family of (1+1)-dimensional field theoretical models with two real scalar fields are computed. A generalized DHN formula applicable to potentials with and without reflection is obtained. It is shown how half-bound states arising in the spectrum of the second order fluctuation operator for one-component topological kinks and the vacuum play a central r$\hat{\rm o}$le in the computation of the kink Casimir energy. The issue of whether or not the kink degeneracy exhibited by this family of models at the classical level survives one-loop quantum fluctuation…
Massive D=4 N=2 supersymmetric sigma models typically admit domain wall (Q-kink) solutions and string (Q-lump) solutions, both preserving 1/2 supersymmetry. We exhibit a new static 1/4 supersymmetric `kink-lump' solution in which a string ends on a wall, and show that it has an effective realization as a BIon of the D=4 super DBI-action. It is also shown to have a time-dependent Q-kink-lump generalization which reduces to the Q-lump in a limit corresponding to infinite BI magnetic field. All these 1/4 supersymmetric sigma-model solitons are shown to be realized in M-theory as calibrated, or `Q…
We identify the kinks of a deformed O(3) linear Sigma model as the solutions of a set of first-order systems of equations; the above model is a generalization of the MSTB model with a three-component scalar field. Taking into account certain kink energy sum rules we show that the variety of kinks has the structure of a moduli space that can be compactified in a fairly natural way. The generic kinks, however, are unstable and Morse Theory provides the framework for the analysis of kink stability.
It is shown how a integrable mechanical system provides all the localized static solutions of a deformation of the linear O(N)-sigma model in two space-time dimensions. The proof is based on the Hamilton-Jacobi separability of the mechanical analogue system that follows when time-independent field configurations are being considered. In particular, we describe the properties of the different kinds of kinks in such a way that a hierarchical structure of solitary wave manifolds emerges for distinct N.
In this paper the whole kink varieties arising in several massive non-linear Sigma models whose target space is the torus ${\mathbb S}^1\times{\mathbb S}^1$ are analytically calculated. This possibility underlies the construction of first-order differential equations by adapting the Bogomolny procedure to non-Euclidean spaces. Among the families of solutions non-topological kinks connecting the same vacuum are found. This class of solutions are usually considered to be not globally stable. However, in this context the topological constraints obtained by the non-simply connectedness of the targ…
One-loop mass shifts to the classical masses of stable kinks arising in a massive non-linear ${\mathbb S}^2$-sigma model are computed. Ultraviolet divergences are controlled using the heat kernel/zeta function regularization method. A comparison between the results achieved from exact and high-temperature asymptotic heat traces is analyzed in depth.
For the study of topological vortices with non-minimal coupling, we built a kind of non-canonical O(3)-sigma model, with a Maxwell term modified by a dielectric function. Through the BPS formalism, an investigation is made on possible configurations of vortices in topological sectors of the sigma model and the real scalar field. For a particular ansatz, the solutions of the topological sector of the real scalar field are described by the known kink solutions. On the other hand, when studying the vortices in the non-minimal sector of the pure O(3)-sigma model, it is detected the emergence of so…
The solitary waves of massive (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear S^N-sigma models are unveiled. It is shown that the solitary waves in these systems are in one-to-one correspondence with the separatrix trajectories in the repulsive N-dimensional Neumann mechanical problem. There are topological (heteroclinic trajectories) and non-topological (homoclinic trajectories) kinks. The stability of some embedded sine-Gordon kinks is discussed by means of the direct estimation of the spectra of the second-order fluctuation operators around them, whereas the instability of other topological and non-topological…
We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to compute the one-loop quantum correction to the masses of the TK1 and TK2 kinks in a deformation of the O(N) linear sigma model on the real line.
Following Finkelstein and Misner, kinks are non-trivial field configurations of a field theory, and different kink-numbers correspond to different disconnected components of the space of allowed field configurations for a given topology of the base manifold. In a theory of gravity, non-vanishing kink-numbers are associated to a twisted causal structure. In two dimensions this means, more specifically, that the light-cone tilts around (non-trivially) when going along a non-contractible non-selfintersecting loop on spacetime. One purpose of this paper is to construct the maximal extensions of ki…
We argue that the world-sheet dynamics of magnetic k-strings in the Higgs phase of the mass-deformed N=4 theory, is controlled by a bosonic O(3) sigma model with anisotropy and a topological theta term. The theory interpolates between a massless O(2) symmetric regime, a massive O(3) symmetric phase and another massive phase with a spontaneously broken Z_2 symmetry. The first two phases are separated by a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. When θ= πthe O(3) symmetric phase flows to an interacting fixed point; sigma model kinks and their dyonic partners become degenerate, mirroring the behaviour of…
We analyze the evolution of the effective potential and the particle spectrum of two-parameter families of non-integrable quantum field theories. These theories are defined by deformations of conformal minimal models M_m by using the operators Phi_{1,3}, Phi_{1,2} and Phi_{2,1}. This study extends to all minimal models the analysis previously done for the classes of universality of the Ising, the Tricritical Ising and the RSOS models. We establish the symmetry and the duality properties of the various models also identifying the limiting theories that emerge when m goes to infinity.
We investigate the presence of topological structures and multiple phase transitions in the O(3)-sigma model with the gauge field governed by Maxwell's term and subject to a so-called Gausson's self-dual potential. To carry out this study, it is numerically shown that this model supports topological solutions in 3-dimensional spacetime. In fact, to obtain the topological solutions, we assume a spherically symmetrical ansatz to find the solutions, as well as some physical behaviors of the vortex, as energy and magnetic field. It is presented a planar view of the magnetic field as an interesting…
In this paper the domain wall solutions of a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear $\mathbb{S}^2$-sigma hybrid model are exactly calculated. There exist two types of basic domain walls and two families of composite domain walls. The domain wall solutions have been identified by using a Bogomolny arrangement in a system of sphero-conical coordinates on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. The stability of all the domain walls is also investigated.
We discuss the role of the axial $U(1)_A$ symmetry in the chiral phase transition using the $U(N_f)_R\times U(N_f)_L$ linear sigma model with two massless quark flavors. We expect that above a certain temperature the axial $U(1)_A$ symmetry will be effectively restored as well as $SU(N_f)_R\times SU(N_f)_L$. Then we can construct a string-like static solution the $η$ string and a kink-like classical solution the domain wall during the chiral phase transition. We give out the possible signals for detecting the domain wall in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions.
The domain wall solutions of a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear $S^2$-sigma hybrid model are unveiled. There are three types of basic topological walls and two types of degenerate families of composite - one topological, the other non-topological- walls. The domain wall solutions are identified as the finite action trajectories (in infinite time) of a related mechanical system that is Hamilton-Jacobi separable in sphero-conical coordinates. The physical and mathematical features of these domain walls are thoroughly discussed.
We study the non-perturbative dynamics of the two dimensional ${O(N)}$ and Grassmannian sigma models by using compactification with twisted boundary conditions on $\mathbb R \times S^1$, semi-classical techniques and resurgence. While the $O(N)$ model has no instantons for $N>3$, it has (non-instanton) saddles on $\mathbb R^2$, which we call 2d-saddles. On $\mathbb R \times S^1$, the resurgent relation between perturbation theory and non-perturbative physics is encoded in new saddles, which are associated with the affine root system of the ${\frak o}(N) $ algebra. These events may be viewed as…
In this work we investigate several models described by a single real scalar field with non-polynomial interactions, constructed to support topological solutions. We do this using the deformation procedure to introduce a function which allows to construct two distinct families of hyperbolic potentials, controlled by three distinct parameters, in the standard formalism. In this way, the procedure allows us to get analytical solutions, and then investigate the energy density, linear stability and zero mode. We move on and introduce a non-standard formalism to obtain compact solutions, analytical…
The reducible Kähler coset space G/S\otimesU(1)^k is discussed in a geometrical approach. We derive the formula which expresses the Riemann curvature of the reducible Kähler coset space in terms of its Killing vectors. The formula manifests the group structure of G. On the basis of this formula we establish an algebraic method to evaluate the four-fermi coupling of the supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model on G/S\otimesU(1)^k at the low-energy limit. As an application we consider the supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model on E_7/SU(5)\otimesU(1)^3 which contains the three families of {10} + {5^…
Effects of mass deformations on 1/2 Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) non-Abelian vortices are studied in 4d N=2 supersymmetric U(1) \times SO(2n) and U(1) \times USp(2n) gauge theories, with Nf=2n quark multiplets. The 2d N=(2,2) effective worldsheet sigma models on the Hermitian symmetric spaces SO(2n)/U(n) and USp(2n)/U(n) found recently which describe the low-energy excitations of the orientational moduli of the vortices, are generalized to the respective massive sigma models. The continuous vortex moduli spaces are replaced by a finite number (2^{n-1} or 2^{n}) of vortex solutions. The…
Quantum-disordering a discrete-symmetry breaking state by condensing domain-walls can lead to a trivial symmetric insulator state. In this work, we show that if we bind a 1D representation of the symmetry (such as a charge) to the intersection point of several domain walls, condensing such modified domain-walls can lead to a non-trivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. This result is obtained by showing that the modified domain-wall condensed state has a non-trivial SPT invariant -- the symmetry-twist dependent partition function. We propose two different kinds of field theories tha…
In this work, a possible description for quantum dynamics of the cuscuton within the sigma-model approach is presented. Lower order perturbative corrections and the structure of divergences are found. Motivated by the results generated by the perturbative approach, we investigate the existence of topological structures in the cuscuton-like model. The structures we study are, first, kink-like configurations in two dimensional spacetime, second, vortex solutions in three dimensional one with gauge field ruled by the Maxwell term. In fact, to show the existence of kink solutions it is needed to i…

We propose a correspondence between vertex operator superalgebras and families of sigma models in which the two structures are related by symmetry properties and a certain reflection procedure. The existence of such a correspondence is motivated by previous work on N=(4,4) supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on K3 surfaces and on a vertex operator superalgebra with Conway group symmetry. Here we present an example of the correspondence for N=(4,4) supersymmetric non-linear sigma models on four-tori, and compare it to the K3 case.
We describe several families of non-unitary coset conformal field theories that possess truly marginal couplings. These generalize the known examples of Wess-Zumino-Witten models on supergroups such as PSU(n|n) or OSP(2n+2|2n). Our extension includes coset space sigma models, affine Toda theories or Gross-Neveu models which are believed to arise in certain limits.
We reconsider the question of which Calabi-Yau compactifications of the heterotic string are stable under world-sheet instanton corrections to the effective space-time superpotential. For instance, compactifications described by (0,2) linear sigma models are believed to be stable, suggesting a remarkable cancellation among the instanton effects in these theories. Here, we show that this cancellation follows directly from a residue theorem, whose proof relies only upon the right-moving world-sheet supersymmetries and suitable compactness properties of the (0,2) linear sigma model. Our residue t…
In these Lectures a method is described to analyze the effect of quantum fluctuations on topological defect backgrounds up to the one-loop level. The method is based on the spectral heat kernel/zeta function regularization procedure, and it is first applied to various types of kinks arising in several deformed linear and non-linear sigma models with different numbers of scalar fields. In the second part, the same conceptual framework is constructed for the topological solitons of the planar semilocal Abelian Higgs model, built from a doublet of complex scalar fields and one U(1) gauge field.
Recently, multiple fractional instanton configurations with zero instanton charge, called bions, have been revealed to play important roles in quantum field theories on compactified spacetime. In two dimensions, fractional instantons and bions have been extensively studied in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model and the Grassmann sigma model on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^1$ with the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetric twisted boundary condition. Fractional instantons in these models are domain walls with a localized $U(1)$ modulus twisted half along their world volume. In this paper, we classify fractional insta…
A lump (2D Skyrmion) can be constructed as a sine-Gordon kink (1D Skyrmion) inside a domain wall in the massive O(3) sigma model. In this paper, we discuss relations between Skyrmions in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. We first construct a Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield 3D Skyrmion as a lump inside a non-Abelian domain wall in an O(4) sigma model with a potential term admitting two discrete vacua. Next, we construct a conventional 3D Skyrmion as a baby Skyrmion in a non-Abelian domain wall in the Skyrme model with a modified mass term admitting two discrete vacua. We also construct a spinning 3D Skyrm…
The first analytic topologically non-trivial solutions in the (3+1)-dimensional gauged non-linear sigma model representing multi-solitons at finite volume with manifest ordered structures generating their own electromagnetic field are presented. The complete set of seven coupled non-linear field equations of the gauged non-linear sigma model together with the corresponding Maxwell equations are reduced in a self-consistent way to just one linear Schrodinger-like equation in two dimensions. The corresponding two dimensional periodic potential can be computed explicitly in terms of the solitons …
A two-dimensional field theory of a fermion chirally coupled to Toda field plus a scalar self-coupling potential is considered. Using techniques of integrable systems we obtain analytical zero modes, in-gap states and bound states in the continuum (BIC) for topological configurations of the scalar field. Fermion-soliton duality mappings are uncovered for the bound state spectrum, which interpolates the weak and strong coupling sectors of the model and give rise to novel Thirring-like and multi-frequency sine-Gordon models, respectively. The non-perturbative effects of the back-reaction of the …
