Some sigma models which admit a theta angle are integrable at both $\vartheta=0$ and $\vartheta=π$. This includes the well-known $O(3)$ sigma model and two families of coset sigma models studied by Fendley. We consider the ground state energy of these models in the presence of a magnetic field, which can be computed with the Bethe ansatz. We obtain explicit results for its non-perturbative corrections and we study the effect of the theta angle on them. We show that imaginary, exponentially small corrections due to renormalons remain unchanged, while instanton corrections change sign, as expected. We find in addition corrections due to renormalons which also change sign as we turn on the theta angle. Based on these results we present an explicit non-perturbative formula for the topological susceptibility of the $O(3)$ sigma model in the presence of a magnetic field, in the weak coupling limit.
We study IR-renormalon divergences in N=1 supersymmetric Yang Mills gauge theories and in two dimensional non linear sigma models with mass gap. We derive, in both types of theories, a direct connection between IR- renormalons and fractional instanton effects. From the point of view of large $N$ dualities we work out a connection between IR-renormalons and $c=1$ matrix models.
Perturbation series in quantum field theory are generally divergent asymptotic series which are also typically not Borel resummable in the sense that the resummed series is ambiguous. The ambiguity is associated with singularities in the Borel plane on the positive real axis. In quantum mechanics there are cases in which the ambiguity that arises in perturbation theory cancels against a similarly ambiguous contribution from instanton--anti-instanton events. In asymptotically free gauge theories this mechanism does not suffice because perturbation theory develops ambiguities associated with sin…
We study the dynamics of four dimensional gauge theories with adjoint fermions for all gauge groups, both in perturbation theory and non-perturbatively, by using circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions for the fermions. There are new gauge phenomena. We show that, to all orders in perturbation theory, many gauge groups are Higgsed by the gauge holonomy around the circle to a product of both abelian and nonabelian gauge group factors. Non-perturbatively there are monopole-instantons with fermion zero modes and two types of monopole-anti-monopole molecules, called bions. One ty…
Within the Wilson integral formalism, we discuss the structure of nonperturbative corrections to the quark form factor at large momentum transfer analyzing the infrared renormalon and instanton effects. We show that the nonperturbative effects determine the initial value for the perturbative evolution of the quark form factor and attribute their general structure to the renormalon ambiguities of the perturbative series. It is demonstrated that the instanton contributions result in the finite renormalization of the next-to-leading perturbative result and numerically are characterized by a small…
According to Lipatov, the high orders of perturbation theory are determined by saddle-point configurations (instantons) of the corresponding functional integrals. According to t'Hooft, some individual large diagrams, renormalons, are also significant and they are not contained in the Lipatov contribution. The history of the conception of renormalons is presented, and the arguments in favor of and against their significance are discussed. The analytic properties of the Borel transforms of functional integrals, Green functions, vertex parts, and scaling functions are investigated in the case of …
In the holographic model of QCD, theta dependence sharply changes at the point of confinement deconfinement phase transition. In large N QCD such a change in theta behavior can be related to the breakdown of the instanton expansion at some critical temperature T_c. Associating this temperature with confinement-deconfinement phase transition leads to the description of the latter in terms of dissociation of instantons into the fractionally charged instanton quarks. To elucidate this picture, we introduce the nonvanishing chiral condensate in the deconfining phase and assume a specific lagrangia…
The D-instanton corrected hypermultiplet moduli space of type II string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold is known in the type IIA picture to be determined in terms of the generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants, through a twistorial construction. At the same time, in the mirror type IIB picture, and in the limit where only D3-D1-D(-1)-instanton corrections are retained, it should carry an isometric action of the S-duality group SL(2,Z). We prove that this is the case in the one-instanton approximation, by constructing a holomorphic action of SL(2,Z) on the linearized twistor space…
We perform an all-order resurgence analysis of a quantum field theory renormalon that contributes to an anomalous dimension in six-dimensional scalar $ϕ^3$ theory and is governed by a third-order nonlinear differential equation. We augment the factorially divergent perturbative expansion associated to the renormalon by asymptotic expansions to all instanton orders, in a conjectured and well-tested formula. A distinctive feature of this renormalon singularity is the appearance of logarithmic terms, starting at second-instanton order in the trans-series. To highlight this and to illustrate our m…
We consider topology changing processes in SU(2)--Higgs theory. In the Standard Model of particle physics they are accompanied by baryon--and lepton--number non--conservation. At fixed energy and multiplicity of initial state, these processes are described by classical Theta--instanton solutions. We describe these solutions and calculate the suppression exponents for the probabilities of the topology changing transitions at relatively low energies.
Turning the divergent epsilon-expansion into a numerically sensible algorithm, relies on the knowledge of the behaviour of the large order contributions. Two different pictures are known to compete there. The first one was based on Lipatov's instantons, which is known to deal with the multiplicity of Feynman diagrams which grows factorially at high orders. However this was challenged by 't Hooft's renormalons who pointed out that renormalization could yield a similar growth through one single diagram. We study here a well-known model, the $O(N)$ model, in the large $N$ limit. The reason for re…
We derive the semiclassical contributions from the real and complex bions in the two-dimensional $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ sigma model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^{1}$ with a twisted boundary condition. The bion configurations are saddle points of the complexified Euclidean action, which can be viewed as bound states of a pair of fractional instantons with opposite topological charges. We first derive the bion solutions by solving the equation of motion in the model with a potential which simulates an interaction induced by fermions in the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ quantum mechanics. The bion solutions have …
The theta-dependent gauge theories can be studied by using holographic duality through string theory on certain spacetimes. Via this correspondence we consider a stack of $N_{0}$ dynamical D0-branes as D-instantons in the background sourced by $N_{c}$ coincident non-extreme black D4-branes. According to the gauge-gravity duality this D0-D4 brane system corresponds to Yang-Mills theory with a theta angle at finite temperature. We solve the IIA supergravity action by taking account into a sufficiently small backreaction of the D-instantons and obtain an analytical solution for our D0-D4-brane co…
In continuum physics, there are important topological aspects like instantons, theta-terms and the axial anomaly. Conventional lattice discretizations often have difficulties in treating one or the other of these aspects. In this paper, we develop discrete quantum field theories on fuzzy manifolds using noncommutative geometry. Basing ourselves on previous treatments of instantons and chiral fermions (without fermion doubling) on fuzzy spaces and especially fuzzy spheres, we present discrete representations of theta-terms and topological susceptibility for gauge theories and derive axial anoma…
The Barbero-Immirzi parameter is a one parameter quantization ambiguity underpinning the loop approach to quantum gravity that bears tantalizing similarities to the theta parameter of gauge theories such as Yang-Mills and QCD. Despite the apparent semblance, the Barbero-Immirzi field has resisted a direct topological interpretation along the same lines as the theta-parameter. Here we offer such an interpretation. Our approach begins from the perspective of Einstein-Cartan gravity as the symmetry broken phase of a de Sitter gauge theory. From this angle, just as in ordinary gauge theories, a th…
For commutative Euclidean time, we study the existence of field configurations that {\it a)} are formal power series expansions in $hθ^{\m\n}$, {\it b)} go to ordinary (anti-)instantons as $hθ^{\m\n}\to 0$, and {\it c)} render stationary the classical action of Euclidean noncommutative SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. We show that the noncommutative (anti-)self-duality equations have no solutions of this type at any order in $hθ^{\m\n}$. However, we obtain all the deformations --called first-order-in-$θ$-deformed instantons-- of the ordinary instanton that, at first order in $hθ^{\m\n}$, satisfy the e…
The dependence on the topological theta angle term in quantum field theory is usually discussed in the context of instanton calculus. There the observables are 2 pi periodic, analytic functions of theta. However, in strongly coupled theories, the semi-classical instanton approximation can break down due to infrared divergences. Instances are indeed known where analyticity in theta can be lost, while the 2 pi periodicity is preserved. In this short note we exhibit a simple two dimensional example where the 2 pi periodicity is lost. The observables remain periodic under the transformation theta …
We investigate the ground-state energy of the integrable two dimensional $O(3)$ sigma model in a magnetic field. By determining a large number of perturbative coefficients we explore the closest singularities of the corresponding Borel function. We then confront its median resummation to the high precision numerical solution of the exact integral equation and observe that the leading exponentially suppressed contribution is not related to the asymptotics of the perturbative coefficients. By analytically expanding the integral equation we calculate the leading non-perturbative contributions up …
We consider aspects of instanton dynamics in the large-N limit using the AdS/CFT duality for D0/D4 bound states. In the supergravity picture of wrapped D0-brane world-lines on D4-branes, we find the single-instanton measure and discuss its dependence on compactification finite-size effects, as well as its matching to perturbative results. In the non-supersymmetric case, the same dynamical effects that produce the theta-angle dependence perturbatively in 1/N, render the instantons unstable, although approximate instantons of very small size still exist. The smeared D0/D4 black-brane supergravit…
The theta dependence of the vacuum energy density in CP^{N-1} models is re-analysed in the semiclassical approach, the 1/N expansion and arguments based on the nodal structure of vacuum wavefunctionals. The 1/N expansion is shown not to be in contradiction with instanton physics at finite (spacetime) volume V. The interplay of large volume V and large N parameter gives rise to two regimes with different theta dependence, one behaving as a dilute instanton gas and the other dominated by the traditional large N picture, where instantons reappear as resonances of the one-loop effective action, ev…
Classical configurations in the CP^{N-1} model on R^1 x S^1 is studied with twisted boundary conditions. Starting from fractional instantons with the Z_N twisted boundary conditions, we review briefly the relevance of our study to resurgence phenomenon in field theory. We consider primarily configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, called "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons". We construct an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractional instanton (nu=1/N) and one fractional anti-instanton…
We classify bions in the Grassmann $Gr_{N_{\rm F},N_{\rm C}}$ sigma model (including the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We formulate these models as $U(N_{\rm C})$ gauge theories with $N_{\rm F}$ flavors in the fundamental representations. These theories can be promoted to supersymmetric gauge theories and further can be embedded into D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, termed neutral bions and charged bions, which are ident…
Motivated by mathematical structures which arise in string vacua and gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry, we study the properties of certain generalized theta series which appear as Fourier coefficients of functions on a twisted torus. In Calabi-Yau string vacua, such theta series encode instanton corrections from $k$ Neveu-Schwarz five-branes. The theta series are determined by vector-valued wave-functions, and in this work we obtain the transformation of these wave-functions induced by Kontsevich-Soibelman symplectomorphisms. This effectively provides a quantum version of these transformat…
We apply a recently proposed mechanism -- in which an SU(3) symmetry predicts the weak mixing angle -- to construct realistic theories with composite quarks and leptons at a TeV. Although the models are strongly coupled, they are reliably analyzed using complementarity and 't Hooft's anomaly matching. In the simplest models the right-handed fermions are composite, while the left-handed are elementary. Strong SU(2)_R forces give rise to 12-particle instanton-mediated processes. They violate baryon and lepton numbers by three units and result in spectacular multilepton and multijet events at the…
The theta dependence of the vacuum energy in large N Yang-Mills theory has been studied some time ago by Witten using a duality of large N gauge theories with string theory compactified on a certain space-time. We show that within the field theory context vacuum fluctuations of the topological charge give rise to the vacuum energy consistent with the string theory computation. Furthermore, we calculate 1/N suppressed corrections to the string theory result. The reconciliation of the string and field theory approaches is based on the fact that the gauge theory instantons carry zerobrane charge …
We study N=2 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(N) from the point of view of the Whitham hierarchy. We develop a new recursive method to compute the whole instanton expansion of the prepotential using the theta function associated to the root lattice of the group. Explicit results for the one and two-instanton corrections in SU(N) are presented. Interpreting the slow times of the hierarchy as additional couplings, we show how they can be promoted to spurion superfields that softly break N=2 supersymmetry down to N=0. This provides a family of nonsupersymmetric deformations of the theo…
We compute instanton corrections to the low energy effective prepotential of N=2 supersymmetric theories in a variety of cases, including all classical gauge groups and even number of fundamental matter hypermultiplets. To this end, we take profit of a set of first- and second-order equations for the logarithmic derivatives of the prepotential with respect to the dynamical scale expressed in terms of Riemann's theta-function. These equations emerge in the context of the Whitham hierarchy approach to the low-energy Seiberg--Witten solution of supersymmetric gauge theories. Our procedure is recu…
We investigate quantum corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space M in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theories, with particular emphasis on instanton effects from Euclidean NS5-branes. Based on the consistency of D- and NS5-instanton corrections, we determine the topology of the hypermultiplet moduli space at fixed string coupling, as previewed in arXiv:1009.3026. On the type IIB side, we compute corrections from (p,k)-fivebrane instantons to the metric on M (specifically, the correction to the complex contact structure on its twistor space Z) by applying S-duality to the D…
A fundamental result relevant to spin chains and two-dimensional disordered systems is that the sphere sigma model with instanton coupling theta=pi has a non-trivial low-energy fixed point and a gapless spectrum. This result is extended to two series of sigma models with theta=pi: the SU(N)/SO(N) sigma models flow to the SU(N)_1 WZW theory, while the O(2N)/O(N)\times O(N) models flow to O(2N)_1 (2N free Majorana fermions). These models are integrable, and the exact quasiparticle spectra and S matrices are found. One interesting feature is that charges fractionalize when theta=pi. I compute the…
We study the non-perturbative dynamics of the two dimensional ${O(N)}$ and Grassmannian sigma models by using compactification with twisted boundary conditions on $\mathbb R \times S^1$, semi-classical techniques and resurgence. While the $O(N)$ model has no instantons for $N>3$, it has (non-instanton) saddles on $\mathbb R^2$, which we call 2d-saddles. On $\mathbb R \times S^1$, the resurgent relation between perturbation theory and non-perturbative physics is encoded in new saddles, which are associated with the affine root system of the ${\frak o}(N) $ algebra. These events may be viewed as…
The standard lore about the sum over topological sectors in quantum field theory is that locality and cluster decomposition uniquely determine the sum over such sectors, thus leading to the usual theta-vacua. We show that without changing the local degrees of freedom, a theory can be modified such that the sum over instantons should be restricted; e.g. one should include only instanton numbers which are divisible by some integer p. This conclusion about the configuration space of quantum field theory allows us to carefully reconsider the quantization of parameters in supergravity. In particula…
The Nicolai map is a field transformation that relates supersymmetric theories at finite couplings $g$ with the free theory at $g=0$. It is obtained via an ordered exponential of the coupling flow operator integrated from $0$ to $g$. Allowing multiple couplings, we find that the map in general depends on the chosen integration contour in coupling space. This induces a large functional freedom in the construction of the Nicolai map, which cancels in all correlator computations. Under a certain condition on the coupling flow operator the ambiguity disappears, and the power-series expansion for t…
We consider a U(1) Gauged Linear Sigma Model (GLSM) with (2,2) supersymmetry, leading to a susy vacua of the resolved conifold. It possesses the non-Abelian global symmetry SU(2)xSU(2). A non-Abelian T-duality can be constructed which can be described by gauging the global non-Abelian symmetry. This leads to a dual action, in terms of the dual model Kaehler and superpotential terms, which include twisted chiral superfields dependence. Comparing the effective potentials for the U(1) fields on the original and the dual models we determine the instanton corrections to the dual action. We obtain t…
Quantum systems with multiple degenerate classical harmonic minima exhibit new non-perturbative phenomena which are not present for the double-well and periodic potentials. The simplest characteristic example of this family is the triple-well potential. Despite the fact that instantons are exact semiclassical solutions with finite and minimal action, they do not contribute to the energy spectrum at leading order in the semiclassical analysis. This is because the instanton fluctuation prefactor vanishes, which can be interpreted as the action becoming infinite quantum mechanically. Instead, the…
Non-perturbative corrections and modular properties of four-dimensional type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifolds are discussed. It is shown that certain non-perturbative alpha' corrections survive in the large volume limit of the orientifold and periodically correct the Kahler potential. These corrections depend on the NS-NS two form and have to be completed by D-instanton contributions to transform covariantely under symmetries of the type IIB orientifold background. It is shown that generically also the D-instanton superpotential depends on the two-form moduli as well as on the complex dilaton. Thes…
We investigate the D0-D4-brane system for different B-field backgrounds including the small instanton singularity in noncommutative SYM theory. We discuss the excitation spectrum of the unstable state as well as for the BPS D0-D4 bound state. We compute the tachyon potential which reproduces the complete mass defect. The relevant degrees of freedom are the massless (4,4) strings. Both results are in contrast with existing string field theory calculations. The excitation spectrum of the small instanton is found to be equal to the excitation spectrum of the fluxon solution on R^2_theta x R which…
Motivated by precision counting of BPS black holes, we analyze six-derivative couplings in the low energy effective action of three-dimensional string vacua with 16 supercharges. Based on perturbative computations up to two-loop, supersymmetry and duality arguments, we conjecture that the exact coefficient of the $\nabla^2(\nablaϕ)^4$ effective interaction is given by a genus-two modular integral of a Siegel theta series for the non-perturbative Narain lattice times a specific meromorphic Siegel modular form. The latter is familiar from the Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (DVV) conjecture on exact…
Sigma models arise frequently in particle physics and condensed-matter physics as low-energy effective theories. In this paper I compute the exact free energy at any temperature in two hierarchies of integrable sigma models in two dimensions. These theories, the SU(N)/SO(N) and O(2P)/O(P) x O(P) models, are asymptotically free and exhibit charge fractionalization. When the instanton coupling theta=pi, they flow to the SU(N)_1 and O(2P)_1 conformal field theories, respectively. I also generalize the free energy computation to massive and massless perturbations of the coset conformal field theor…
Five-dimensional $Sp(N)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills admits a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ version of a theta angle $θ$. In this note, we derive a double quantization of the Seiberg-Witten geometry of $\mathcal{N}=1$ $Sp(1)$ gauge theory at $θ=π$, on the manifold $S^1\times\mathbb{R}^4$. Crucially, $\mathbb{R}^4$ is placed on the $Ω$-background, which provides the two parameters to quantize the geometry. Physically, we are counting instantons in the presence of a 1/2-BPS fundamental Wilson loop, both of which are wrapping $S^1$. Mathematically, this amounts to proving the regularity of a $qq$-character for th…
