Automatic perception of human behaviors during social interactions is crucial for AR/VR applications, and an essential component is estimation of plausible 3D human pose and shape of our social partners from the egocentric view. One of the biggest challenges of this task is severe body truncation due to close social distances in egocentric scenarios, which brings large pose ambiguities for unseen body parts. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel scene-conditioned diffusion method to model the body pose distribution. Conditioned on the 3D scene geometry, the diffusion model generates bodies in plausible human-scene interactions, with the sampling guided by a physics-based collision score to further resolve human-scene inter-penetrations. The classifier-free training enables flexible sampling with different conditions and enhanced diversity. A visibility-aware graph convolution model guided by per-joint visibility serves as the diffusion denoiser to incorporate inter-joint dependencies and per-body-part control. Extensive evaluations show that our method generates bodies in plausible interactions with 3D scenes, achieving both superior accuracy for visible joints and diversity for invisible body parts. This work addresses hand mesh recovery from a single RGB image. In contrast to most of the existing approaches where the parametric hand models are employed as the prior, we show that the hand mesh can be learned directly from the input image. We propose a new type of GAN called Im2Mesh GAN to learn the mesh through end-to-end adversarial training. By interpreting the mesh as a graph, our model is able to capture the topological relationship among the mesh vertices. We also introduce a 3D surface descriptor into the GAN architecture to further capture the 3D features associated. We experiment …

In this paper, we propose a novel pipeline for the 3D reconstruction of the full body from egocentric viewpoints. 3-D reconstruction of the human body from egocentric viewpoints is a challenging task as the view is skewed and the body parts farther from the cameras are occluded. One such example is the view from cameras installed below VR headsets. To achieve this task, we first make use of conditional GANs to translate the egocentric views to full body third-person views. This increases the comprehensibility of the image and caters to occlusions. The generated third-person view is further sen…

Since higher-order tensors are naturally suitable for representing multi-dimensional data in real-world, e.g., color images and videos, low-rank tensor representation has become one of the emerging areas in machine learning and computer vision. However, classical low-rank tensor representations can only represent data on finite meshgrid due to their intrinsical discrete nature, which hinders their potential applicability in many scenarios beyond meshgrid. To break this barrier, we propose a low-rank tensor function representation (LRTFR), which can continuously represent data beyond meshgrid w…
This technical report introduces our solution, MEEV, proposed to the EgoBody Challenge at ECCV 2022. Captured from head-mounted devices, the dataset consists of human body shape and motion of interacting people. The EgoBody dataset has challenges such as occluded body or blurry image. In order to overcome the challenges, MEEV is designed to exploit multiscale features for rich spatial information. Besides, to overcome the limited size of dataset, the model is pre-trained with the dataset aggregated 2D and 3D pose estimation datasets. Achieving 82.30 for MPJPE and 92.93 for MPVPE, MEEV has won …

Fully supervised human mesh recovery methods are data-hungry and have poor generalizability due to the limited availability and diversity of 3D-annotated benchmark datasets. Recent progress in self-supervised human mesh recovery has been made using synthetic-data-driven training paradigms where the model is trained from synthetic paired 2D representation (e.g., 2D keypoints and segmentation masks) and 3D mesh. However, on synthetic dense correspondence maps (i.e., IUV) few have been explored since the domain gap between synthetic training data and real testing data is hard to address for 2D de…

Top-down methods for monocular human mesh recovery have two stages: (1) detect human bounding boxes; (2) treat each bounding box as an independent single-human mesh recovery task. Unfortunately, the single-human assumption does not hold in images with multi-human occlusion and crowding. Consequently, top-down methods have difficulties in recovering accurate 3D human meshes under severe person-person occlusion. To address this, we present Occluded Human Mesh Recovery (OCHMR) - a novel top-down mesh recovery approach that incorporates image spatial context to overcome the limitations of the sing…
Recent years have witnessed significant progress in 3D hand mesh recovery. Nevertheless, because of the intrinsic 2D-to-3D ambiguity, recovering camera-space 3D information from a single RGB image remains challenging. To tackle this problem, we divide camera-space mesh recovery into two sub-tasks, i.e., root-relative mesh recovery and root recovery. First, joint landmarks and silhouette are extracted from a single input image to provide 2D cues for the 3D tasks. In the root-relative mesh recovery task, we exploit semantic relations among joints to generate a 3D mesh from the extracted 2D cues.…
We propose an end-to-end unified 3D mesh recovery of humans and quadruped animals trained in a weakly-supervised way. Unlike recent work focusing on a single target class only, we aim to recover 3D mesh of broader classes with a single multi-task model. However, there exists no dataset that can directly enable multi-task learning due to the absence of both human and animal annotations for a single object, e.g., a human image does not have animal pose annotations; thus, we have to devise a new way to exploit heterogeneous datasets. To make the unstable disjoint multi-task learning jointly train…

To date, little attention has been given to multi-view 3D human mesh estimation, despite real-life applicability (e.g., motion capture, sport analysis) and robustness to single-view ambiguities. Existing solutions typically suffer from poor generalization performance to new settings, largely due to the limited diversity of image-mesh pairs in multi-view training data. To address this shortcoming, people have explored the use of synthetic images. But besides the usual impact of visual gap between rendered and target data, synthetic-data-driven multi-view estimators also suffer from overfitting …

We introduce a novel task of reconstructing a time series of second-person 3D human body meshes from monocular egocentric videos. The unique viewpoint and rapid embodied camera motion of egocentric videos raise additional technical barriers for human body capture. To address those challenges, we propose a simple yet effective optimization-based approach that leverages 2D observations of the entire video sequence and human-scene interaction constraint to estimate second-person human poses, shapes, and global motion that are grounded on the 3D environment captured from the egocentric view. We co…

Understanding social interactions from egocentric views is crucial for many applications, ranging from assistive robotics to AR/VR. Key to reasoning about interactions is to understand the body pose and motion of the interaction partner from the egocentric view. However, research in this area is severely hindered by the lack of datasets. Existing datasets are limited in terms of either size, capture/annotation modalities, ground-truth quality, or interaction diversity. We fill this gap by proposing EgoBody, a novel large-scale dataset for human pose, shape and motion estimation from egocentric…

We introduce a multi-stage framework that uses mean curvature on a hand surface and focuses on learning interaction between hand and object by analyzing hand grasp type for hand action recognition in egocentric videos. The proposed method does not require 3D information of objects including 6D object poses which are difficult to annotate for learning an object's behavior while it interacts with hands. Instead, the framework synthesizes the mean curvature of the hand mesh model to encode the hand surface geometry in 3D space. Additionally, our method learns the hand grasp type which is highly c…
3D human mesh recovery from a 2D pose plays an important role in various applications. However, it is hard for existing methods to simultaneously capture the multiple relations during the evolution from skeleton to mesh, including joint-joint, joint-vertex and vertex-vertex relations, which often leads to implausible results. To address this issue, we propose a novel solution, called GATOR, that contains an encoder of Graph-Aware Transformer (GAT) and a decoder with Motion-Disentangled Regression (MDR) to explore these multiple relations. Specifically, GAT combines a GCN and a graph-aware self…

Transformer architectures have achieved SOTA performance on the human mesh recovery (HMR) from monocular images. However, the performance gain has come at the cost of substantial memory and computational overhead. A lightweight and efficient model to reconstruct accurate human mesh is needed for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a pure transformer architecture named POoling aTtention TransformER (POTTER) for the HMR task from single images. Observing that the conventional attention module is memory and computationally expensive, we propose an efficient pooling attention module…

3D human mesh recovery from point clouds is essential for various tasks, including AR/VR and human behavior understanding. Previous works in this field either require high-quality 3D human scans or sequential point clouds, which cannot be easily applied to low-quality 3D scans captured by consumer-level depth sensors. In this paper, we make the first attempt to reconstruct reliable 3D human shapes from single-frame partial point clouds. To achieve this, we propose an end-to-end learnable method, named VoteHMR. The core of VoteHMR is a novel occlusion-aware voting network that can first reliably…
In this paper, we present a HAnd Mesh Recovery (HAMR) framework to tackle the problem of reconstructing the full 3D mesh of a human hand from a single RGB image. In contrast to existing research on 2D or 3D hand pose estimation from RGB or/and depth image data, HAMR can provide a more expressive and useful mesh representation for monocular hand image understanding. In particular, the mesh representation is achieved by parameterizing a generic 3D hand model with shape and relative 3D joint angles. By utilizing this mesh representation, we can easily compute the 3D joint locations via linear int…

The end-to-end Human Mesh Recovery (HMR) approach has been successfully used for 3D body reconstruction. However, most HMR-based frameworks reconstruct human body by directly learning mesh parameters from images or videos, while lacking explicit guidance of 3D human pose in visual data. As a result, the generated mesh often exhibits incorrect pose for complex activities. To tackle this problem, we propose to exploit 3D pose to calibrate human mesh. Specifically, we develop two novel Pose Calibration frameworks, i.e., Serial PC-HMR and Parallel PC-HMR. By coupling advanced 3D pose estimators an…

Transformer encoder architectures have recently achieved state-of-the-art results on monocular 3D human mesh reconstruction, but they require a substantial number of parameters and expensive computations. Due to the large memory overhead and slow inference speed, it is difficult to deploy such models for practical use. In this paper, we propose a novel transformer encoder-decoder architecture for 3D human mesh reconstruction from a single image, called FastMETRO. We identify the performance bottleneck in the encoder-based transformers is caused by the token design which introduces high complex…
