We prove that a $k$-regulous function defined on a two-dimensional non-singular affine variety can be extended to an ambient variety. Additionally we derive some results concerning sums of squares of $k$-regulous functions; in particular we show that every positive semi-definite regular function on a non-singular affine variety can be written as a sum of squares of locally Lipschitz regulous functions.
We study seminormalization of affine complex varieties. We show that polynomials on the seminormalization correspond to the rational functions which are continuous for the Euclidean topology. We further study this type of functions which can be seen as complex regulous functions, a class of functions recently introduced in real algebraic geometry, or as the algebraic counterpart of c-holomorphic functions.
Among recently introduced new notions in real algebraic geometry is that of regulous functions. Such functions form a foundation for the development of regulous geometry. Several interesting results on regulous varieties and regulous sheaves are already available. In this paper, we define and investigate regulous vector bundles. We establish algebraic and geometric properties of such vector bundles, and identify them with stratified-algebraic vector bundles. Furthermore, using new results on curve-rational functions, we characterize regulous vector bundles among families of vector spaces param…
We develop geometry of affine algebraic varieties in $K^{n}$ over Henselian rank one valued fields $K$ of equicharacteristic zero. Several results are provided including: the projection $K^{n} \times \mathbb{P}^{m}(K) \to K^{n}$ and blow-ups of the $K$-rational points of smooth $K$-varieties are definably closed maps, a descent property for blow-ups, curve selection for definable sets, a general version of the Łojasiewicz inequality for continuous definable functions on subsets locally closed in the $K$-topology and extending continuous hereditarily rational functions, established for the real…
This paper deals with symplectic varieties which do not have symplectic resolutions. Some moduli spaces of semi-stable torsion-free sheaves on a K3 surface, and symplectic V-manifolds are such varieties. We shall prove local Torelli theorem for symplectic varieties. Some results on symplectic singularities are also included.
We speculate on the relationship between the solvable monodromy extension (SME) property and log canonical models. A motivating example is the moduli space of smooth curves which, by earlier work, is known to have this SME property. In this case the maximal SME compactification is the moduli space of stable nodal curves which coincides with its log canonical model.
A result of Graber, Harris, and Starr shows that a rationally connected variety defined over the function field of a curve over the complex numbers always has a rational point. Similarly, a separably rationally connected variety over a finite field or the function field of a curve over any algebraically closed field will have a rational point. Here we show that rationally connected varieties over the maximally unramified extension of the p-adics usually, in a precise sense, have rational points. This result is in the spirit of Ax and Kochen's result saying that the p-adics are usually $C_{2}$ …
Given a p-form defined on the smooth locus of a normal variety, and a resolution of singularities, we study the problem of extending the pull-back of the p-form over the exceptional set of the desingularization. For log canonical pairs and for certain values of p, we show that an extension always exists, possibly with logarithmic poles along the exceptional set. As a corollary, it is shown that sheaves of reflexive differentials enjoy good pull-back properties. A natural generalization of the well-known Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing theorem to log canonical threefold pairs follows.
Let $X$ be a quasi-affine algebraic variety isomorphic to the complement of a closed subvariety of dimension at most $n-3$ in $\C^n$. We find some conditions under which an isomorphism of two closed subvarieties of $X$ can be extended to an automorphism of $X$.
We answer a question raised by Hindry and Ratazzi concerning the intersection between cyclotomic extensions of a number field $K$ and extensions of $K$ generated by torsion points of an abelian variety over $K$. We prove that a weak version of the property $(μ)$ they introduced holds for any abelian variety, while the same is not true for a slightly stronger version of the property they also considered.
We prove that abelian varieties of small dimension over discrete valuated, stricty henselian ground fields with perfect residue class field obtain semistable reduction after a tamely ramified extension of the ground field. Using this result we obtain perfectness results for Grothendieck's pairing.
Given a family of Calabi-Yau varieties over the punctured disc or over the field of Laurent series, we show that, after a finite base change, the family can be exended across the origin while keeping the canonical class trivial. More generally, we prove similar extension results for families whose log-canonical class is semi-ample. We use these to show that the Berkovich and essential skeleta agree for smooth varieties over ${\mathbb C}((t))$ with semi-ample canonical class.
We prove an analogue of the Tate conjecture on homomorphisms of abelian varieties over infinite cyclotomic extensions of finitely generated fields of characteristic zero.
This paper shows that for K a local field, k a subfield of K and X a variety over k, X is complete if and only if for every finite field extension K' of K, X(K') is compact in its strong topology.
In his book SGA2, A. Grothendieck proved Lefschetz theorems, in particular for the Picard group. To some extent he was able to deal with vector bundles instead of line bundles. Here we use his methods in order to study vector bundles on quasi-projective varieties instead of projective ones (as Grothendieck did). In particular we look at the case of complex algebraic varieties where we can compare with the complex analytic category. Finally we study vector bundles with a connection where stronger results can be achieved.
We prove an extension of the Babbage-Enriques-Petri theorem for semi-canonical curves. We apply this to show that the Prym variety of a generic element of a codimension $k$ subvariety of $\mathcal{R}_{g}$ is not isogenous to another distinct Prym variety, under some mild assumption on $k$.
We show that any derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties of dimension 3 over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ have equal zeta functions. This result is an application of the extension to smooth, projective varieties over any field of Popa and Schnell's proof that derived equivalent smooth, projective varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ have isogenous Albanese torsors; this result is proven in an appendix by Achter, Casalaina-Martin, Honigs and Vial.
We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for abelian varieties to acquire semistable reduction over fields of low degree. Our criteria are expressed in terms of torsion points of small order defined over unramified extensions.
In this paper we consider double covers of the projective space in relation with the problem of extensions of varieties, specifically of extensions of canonical curves to $K3$ surfaces and Fano 3-folds. In particular we consider $K3$ surfaces which are double covers of the plane branched over a general sextic: we prove that the general curve in the linear system pull back of plane curves of degree $k\geq 7$ lies on a unique $K3$ surface. If $k\leq 6$ the general such curve is instead extendable to a higher dimensional variety. In the cases $k=4,5,6$, this gives the existence of singular index …
We study the arithmetic aspects of the finite group of extensions of abelian varieties defined over a number field. In particular, we establish relations with special values of L-functions and congruences between modular forms.
Let X be the variety obtained by the Weil transfer with respect to a quadratic separable field extension of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety. We study (and, in some cases, determine) the canonical dimension, incompressibility, and motivic indecomposability of X. We determine the canonical 2-dimension of X (in the general case).
We generalize Horrocks' criterion for the splitting of vector bundles on projective space. We establish an analogous splitting criterion for vector bundles on a class of smooth complex projective varieties of dimension at least four, over which every extension of line bundles splits.
The Gauss map of a projective variety $X \subset \mathbb{P}^N$ is a rational map from $X$ to a Grassmann variety. In positive characteristic, we show the following results. (1) For given projective varieties $F$ and $Y$, we construct a projective variety $X$ whose Gauss map has $F$ as its general fiber and has $Y$ as its image. More generally, we give such construction for families of varieties over $Y$ instead of fixed $F$. (2) At least in the case when the characteristic is not equal to $2$, any inseparable field extension appears as the extension induced from the Gauss map of some $X$.
We study the Hartogs extension phenomenon in non-compact toric varieties and its relation to the first cohomology group with compact support. We show that a toric variety admits this phenomenon if at least one connected component of the fan complement is concave, proving by this an earlier conjecture M. Marciniak.
The paper consists of two sections. The first section provides a new definition of mirror symmetry of abelian varieties making sense also over $p$-adic fields. The second section introduces and studies quantized theta-functions with two-sided multipliers, which are functions on non-commutative tori. This is an extension of an earlier work by the author. In the Introduction and in the Appendix the constructions of this paper are put into a wider context.
Motivated by the study of the structure of algebraic actions the additive group on affine threefolds X, we consider a special class of such varieties whose algebraic quotient morphisms X $\rightarrow$ X//Ga restrict to principal homogeneous bundles over the complement of a smooth point of the quotient. We establish basic general properties of these varieties and construct families of examples illustrating their rich geometry. In particular, we give a complete classification of a natural subclass consisting of threefolds X endowed with proper Ga-actions, whose algebraic quotient morphisms $π$ :…
Let $G$ be an algebraic group, $X$ a generically free $G$-variety, and $K=k(X)^G$. A field extension $L$ of $K$ is called a splitting field of $X$ if the image of the class of $X$ under the natural map $H^1(K, G) \mapsto H^1(L, G)$ is trivial. If $L/K$ is a (finite) Galois extension then $\Gal(L/K)$ is called a splitting group of $X$. We prove a lower bound on the size of a splitting field of $X$ in terms of fixed points of nontoral abelian subgroups of $G$. A similar result holds for splitting groups. We give a number of applications, including a new construction of noncrossed product divisio…
The main purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual approach to understanding the extension of the Prym map from the space of admissible double covers of stable curves to different toroidal compactifications of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. By separating the combinatorial problems from the geometric aspects we can reduce this to the computation of certain monodromy cones. In this way we not only shed new light on the extension results of Alexeev, Birkenhake, Hulek, and Vologodsky for the second Voronoi toroidal compactification, but we also apply this to ot…
Suppose $A$ is an abelian variety over a field $F$, and $\ell$ is a prime not equal to the characteristic of $F$. Let $F_{Φ,\ell}(A)$ denote the smallest extension of $F$ such that the Zariski closure of the image of the $\ell$-adic representation associated to $A$ is connected. Serre introduced this field, and proved that when $F$ is a finitely generated extension of ${\mathbf Q}$, $F_{Φ,\ell}(A)$ does not depend on the choice of $\ell$. In this paper we study extensions $F_{Φ,\ell}(B)/F$ for twists $B$ of a given abelian variety, especially when the abelian varieties are of Weil type.
Consider a PEL-Shimura variety associated to a unitary group that splits over an unramified extension of Q_p. Rapoport and Zink have defined a model of the Shimura variety over the ring of integers of the completion of the reflex field at a place lying over p, with parahoric level structures at p. We show that this model is flat, as conjectured by Rapoport and Zink, and that its special fibre is reduced.
Given an elliptic curve $E/k$ and a Galois extension $k'/k$, we construct an exact functor from torsion-free modules over the endomorphism ring ${\rm End}(E_{k'})$ with a semilinear ${\rm Gal}(k'/k)$ action to abelian varieties over $k$ that are $k'$-isogenous to a power of $E$. As an application, we show that every elliptic curve with complex multiplication geometrically is isogenous over the ground field to one with complex multiplication by a maximal order.
Let $K$ be a field finitely generated over the field of rational numbers, $K(c)$ the extension of $K$ obtained by adjoining all roots of unity, $L$ an infinite Galois extension of $K$, $X$ an abelian variety defined over $K$. We prove that under certain conditions on $X$ and $K$ the existence of infinitely many L-rational points of finite order on $X$ implies that the intersection of $L$ and $K(c)$ has infinite degree over $K$.
We study semi--algebraic domains associated with symplectic tori and conjecturally identified with spaces of stability conditions on the Fukaya categories of these tori. Our motivation is to test which results from the theory of flat surfaces could hold for more general spaces of stability conditions. The main results concern systolic bounds and volume of the moduli space.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K, and consider the canonical height function attached to a symmetric ample line bundle L on A. We prove that there is a positive lower bound C (depending on A, K, and L) for the canonical height of non-torsion points on A defined over the maximal abelian extension K^ab of K.
We define the notion of isosingular loci of algebraic varieties, following the analytic case first studied by Ephraim. In particular, we give a partial extension of his main result in arbitrary characteristic and a full extension assuming characteristic $0$. One of the main obstructions in the positive characteristic case is the non-separability of the orbit map associated to the contact group, as first observed by Greuel and Pham for isolated singularities.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of "extension" of a toric variety and study its fundamental properties. This gives rise to infinitely many toric varieties with a special property, such as being set theoretic complete intersection or arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) and having a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone or a local ring with non-decreasing Hilbert function, from just one single example with the same property, verifying Rossi's conjecture for larger classes and extending some results appeared in literature.
Given an abelian variety over a field with a discrete valuation, Grothendieck defined a certain open normal subgroup of the absolute inertia group. This subgroup encodes information on the extensions over which the abelian variety acquires semistable reduction. We study this subgroup, and use it to obtain information on the extensions over which the abelian variety acquires semistable reduction.
We study the Hartogs extension phenomenon in noncompact almost homogeneous algebraic varieties and we prove the cohomological and weight criteria for the Hartogs phenomenon. In the case of spherical varieties, we prove a criterion for the Hartogs phenomenon in terms of colored fans.
For rational points on algebraic varieties defined over a number field $K$, we study the behavior of the property of weak approximation with Brauer-Manin obstruction under extension of the ground field. We construct K-varieties accompanied with a quadratic extension $L/K$ such that the property holds over $K$ (conditional on a conjecture) while fails over $L$. The result is unconditional when $K = \mathbb{Q}$ or $K$ is one of several quadratic number fields. Over $\mathbb{Q}$, we give an explicit example.
Our goal in this note is to give a number of examples of abelian varieties over function fields k(t) which have bounded ranks in towers of extensions such as k(t^{1/d}) for varying d. Along the way we prove some new results on Fermat curves which may be of independent interest.
Let $k$ be a number field. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for Kummer varieties over $k$. For example, for any Kummer variety $X$ over $k$, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the ($2$-primary) Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for zero-cycles of any given odd degree on $X$ over $k$. We also obtain similar results for pr…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $q$, $\cac$ a smooth geometrically connected curve defined over $k$ with function field $K:=k(\cac)$. Let $A/K$ be a non constant abelian variety defined over $K$ of dimension $d$. We assume that $q=0$ or $>2d+1$. Let $p\ne q$ be a prime number and $\cac'\to\cac$ a finite geometrically \textsc{Galois} and étale cover defined over $k$ with function field $K':=k(\cac')$. Let $(τ',B')$ be the $K'/k$-trace of $A/K$. We give an upper bound for the $\bbz_p$-corank of the \textsc{Selmer} group $\text{Sel}_p(A\times_KK')$, defined in terms of the $p$-descent map. A…
Let $k$ be a number field, let $X$ be a Kummer variety over $k$, and let $δ$ be an odd integer. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for $X$. For example, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the $2$-primary Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of a zero-cycle of degree $δ$ on $X$ over $k$.
We prove the Mumford--Tate conjecture for those abelian varieties over number fields whose extensions to C have attached adjoint Shimura varieties that are products of simple, adjoint Shimura varieties of certain Shimura types. In particular, we prove the conjecture for the orthogonal case (i.e., for the $B_n$ and $D_n^R$ Shimura types). As a main tool, we construct embeddings of Shimura varieties (whose adjoints are) of prescribed abelian type into unitary Shimura varieties of PEL type. These constructions implicitly classify the adjoints of Shimura varieties of PEL type.
