Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $q$, $\cac$ a smooth geometrically connected curve defined over $k$ with function field $K:=k(\cac)$. Let $A/K$ be a non constant abelian variety defined over $K$ of dimension $d$. We assume that $q=0$ or $>2d+1$. Let $p\ne q$ be a prime number and $\cac'\to\cac$ a finite geometrically \textsc{Galois} and étale cover defined over $k$ with function field $K':=k(\cac')$. Let $(τ',B')$ be the $K'/k$-trace of $A/K$. We give an upper bound for the $\bbz_p$-corank of the \textsc{Selmer} group $\text{Sel}_p(A\times_KK')$, defined in terms of the $p$-descent map. As a consequence, we get an upper bound for the $\bbz$-rank of the \textsc{Lang-Néron} group $A(K')/τ'B'(k)$. In the case of a geometric tower of curves whose \textsc{Galois} group is isomorphic to $\bbz_p$, we give sufficient conditions for the \textsc{Lang-Néron} group of $A$ to be uniformly bounded along the tower.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
We give new instances where Chabauty--Kim sets can be proved to be finite, by developing a notion of "generalised height functions" on Selmer varieties. We also explain how to compute these generalised heights in terms of iterated integrals and give the first explicit nonabelian Chabauty result for a curve $X/\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian has Mordell-Weil rank larger than its genus.
We study the Selmer variety associated to a canonical quotient of the $\Q_p$-pro-unipotent fundamental group of a smooth projective curve of genus at least two defined over $\Q$ whose Jacobian decomposes into a product of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. Elementary multi-variable Iwasawa theory is used to prove dimension bounds, which, in turn, lead to a new proof of Diophantine finiteness over $\Q$ for such curves.
We discuss $p$-adic unipotent Albanese maps for curves of positive genus, extending the theory of $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms. This construction is then used to relate linear Diophantine conjectures of `Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type' to non-linear theorems of Faltings-Siegel type.
This article has three goals. First, we generalize the result of Deuring and Serre on the characterization of supersingular locus of modular curves to all Shimura varieties given by totally indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. Second, we generalize the result of Ribet on arithmetic level raising to such Shimura varieties in the inert case. Third, as an application to number theory, we use the previous results to study the Selmer group of certain triple product motive of an elliptic curve, in the context of the Bloch--Kato conjecture.
In this paper, we study a (p-adic) geometric analogue for abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic p of the cyclotomic Iwasawa theory and the non-commutative Iwasawa theory for abelian varieties over a number field initiated by Mazur and Coates respectively. We will prove some analogue of the principal results obtained in the case over a number field and we study new phenomena which did not happen in the case of number field case. We propose also a conjecture which might be considered as a counterpart of the principal conjecture in the case over a number field. \par This is a …
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$, $K/F$ an $\ell$-adic Lie extension ($\ell\neq p$) and $A/F$ an abelian variety. We provide Euler characteristic formulas for the $Gal(K/F)$-module $Sel_A(K)_\ell$.
We study the parity of 2-Selmer ranks in the family of quadratic twists of a fixed principally polarised abelian variety over a number field. Specifically, we determine the proportion of twists having odd (resp. even) 2-Selmer rank. This generalises work of Klagsbrun--Mazur--Rubin for elliptic curves and Yu for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. Several differences in the statistics arise due to the possibility that the Shafarevich--Tate group (if finite) may have order twice a square. In particular, the statistics for parities of 2-Selmer ranks and 2-infinity Selmer ranks need no longer agree…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. Let $K$ be the $p$-th cyclotomic field and $F$ its maximal real subfield. We give general formulae of the root numbers of the Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves $X^p+Y^p=δ$ where $δ$ is an integer. As an application of these general formulae, we derive the equidistribution of the root numbers for the families of Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves. When $p\nmid δ$, we bound the Selmer groups of these Jacobian varieties. Moreover, if $p$ is regular and all prime ideals of $K$ dividing $δ$ are inert in $K/F$, the Selmer groups are explicitly determined an…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
This note shows how to use the framework of Euler characteristic formulae to study Selmer groups of abelian varieties in certain dihedral or anticyclotomic extensions of CM fields via Iwasawa main conjectures, and in particular how to verify the p-part of the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this setting. When the Selmer group is cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we obtain the p-part of formula predicted by the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. When the Selmer group is not cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we give a con…
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
Given a modular form f of even weight larger than two and an imaginary quadratic field K satisfying a relaxed Heegner hypothesis, we construct a collection of CM cycles on a Kuga-Sato variety over a suitable Shimura curve which gives rise to a system of Galois cohomology classes attached to f enjoying the compatibility properties of an Euler system. Then we use Kolyvagin's method, as adapted by Nekovar to higher weight modular forms, to bound the size of the relevant Selmer group associated to f and K and prove the finiteness of the (primary part) of the Shafarevich-Tate group, provided that a…
We prove some new results on the arithmetic of abelian varieties over function fields of one variable over finitely generated (infinite) fields. Among other things, we introduce certain new natural objects `discrete Selmer groups' and `discrete Shafarevich-Tate groups', and prove that they are finitely generated $\Bbb Z$-modules. Further, we prove that in the isotrivial case, the discrete Shafarevich-Tate group vanishes and the discrete Selmer group coincides with the Mordell-Weil group. One of the key ingredients to prove these results is a new specialisation theorem à la Néron for first Galo…
Given an elliptic curve E1 over a number field and an element s in its 2-Selmer group, we give two different ways to construct infinitely many Abelian surfaces A such that the homogeneous space representing s occurs as a fibre of A over another elliptic curve E2. We show that by comparing the 2-Selmer groups of E1, E2 and A, we can obtain information about Sha(E1/K)[2] and we give examples where we use this to obtain a sharp bound on the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve. As a tool, we give a precise description of the m-Selmer group of an Abelian surface A that is m-isogenous to a produc…
We state a conjectural criterion for identifying global integral points on a hyperbolic curve over $\mathbb{Z}$ in terms of Selmer schemes inside non-abelian cohomology functors with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_p$-unipotent fundamental groups. For $\mathbb{P}^1\setminus \{0,1,\infty\}$ and the complement of the origin in semi-stable elliptic curves of rank 0, we compute the local image of global Selmer schemes, which then allows us to numerically confirm our conjecture in a wide range of cases.
In this note, we compare the dual Selmer groups of an abelian variety with that of its dual over certain large Galois field. We give formula which relates the generalized Iwasawa $μ$-invariants associated with their dual Selmer groups under the natural isogeny.
Under a non-torsion assumption on Heegner points, results of Kolyvagin describe the structure of Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves. In this paper we prove analogous results for ($p$-primary) Shafarevich-Tate groups associated with higher weight modular forms over imaginary quadratic fields satisfying a "Heegner hypothesis". More precisely, we show that the structure of Shafarevich-Tate groups is controlled by cohomology classes built out of Nekovář's Heegner cycles on Kuga-Sato varieties. As an application of our main theorem, we improve on a result of Besser giving a bound on the ord…
For an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $F$, we prove that the average rank of the quadratic twists of $A$ is bounded, under the assumption that the multiplication-by-3 isogeny on $A$ factors as a composition of 3-isogenies over $F$. This is the first such boundedness result for an absolutely simple abelian variety $A$ of dimension greater than one. In fact, we exhibit such twist families in arbitrarily large dimension and over any number field. In dimension one, we deduce that if $E/F$ is an elliptic curve admitting a 3-isogeny, then the average rank of its quadratic twists is bounded.…
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $K_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. Answering a question of Ahmed and Lim, we show that the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group associated to a supersingular polarized abelian variety admits an algebraic functional equation. The proof uses the theory of $Γ$-system developed by Lai, Longhi, Tan and Trihan. We also show the algebraic functional equation holds for Sprung's chromatic Selmer groups of supersingular elliptic curves along $K_\infty$.
Let $f$ be an elliptic modular form and $p$ an odd prime that is coprime to the level of $f$. We study the link between divisors of the characteristic ideal of the $p$-primary fine Selmer group of $f$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ and the greatest common divisor of signed Selmer groups attached to $f$ defined using the theory of Wach modules. One of the key ingredients of our proof is a generalization of a result of Wingberg on the structure of fine Selmer groups of abelian varieties with supersingular reduction at $p$ to the context of modular forms.
In this paper, we study two topics. One is the divisibility problem of class groups of quadratic number fields and its connections to algebraic geometry. The other is the construction of Selmer group and Tate-Shafarevich group for an abelian variety defined over a number field.
It is often the case that a Selmer group of an abelian variety and a group related to an ideal class group can both be naturally embedded into the same cohomology group. One hopes to compute one from the other by finding how close each is to their intersection. In this paper we compute the two groups and their intersection explicitly in the local case and put together the local information to get sharp upper bounds in the global case. The techniques in this paper can be used for arbitrary abelian varieties, isogenies and number fields assuming a frequently occurring condition. Several examples…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $K/K_0$ be a quadratic extension of number fields. Denote by $K_\pm$ the maximal $\mathbb{Z}_p$-power extensions of $K$ that are Galois over $K_0$, with $K_+$ abelian over $K_0$ and $K_-$ dihedral over $K_0$. In this paper we show that for a Galois representation over $K_0$ satisfying certain hypotheses, if it has odd Selmer rank over $K$ then for one of $K_\pm$ its Selmer rank over $L$ is bounded below by $[L:K]$ for $L$ ranging over the finite subextensions of $K$ in $K_\pm$. Our method or proof generalizes a method of Mazur--Rubin, building upon results of N…
We consider a family of abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ arising as Prym varieties of double covers of genus-$1$ curves by genus-$3$ curves. These abelian surfaces carry a polarization of type $(1,2)$ and we show that the average size of the Selmer group of this polarization equals $3$. Moreover we show that the average size of the $2$-Selmer group of the abelian surfaces in the same family is bounded above by $5$. This implies an upper bound on the average rank of these Prym varieties, and gives evidence for the heuristics of Poonen and Rains for a family of abelian varieties which are not …
For any abelian variety $A$ over a number field, we construct an extension of the Tate-Shafarevich group by the Bloch-Tamagawa space using the recent work of Lichtenbaum and Flach. This gives a new example of a Zagier sequence for the Selmer group of $A$.
We develop a theory of `non-abelian higher special elements' in the non-commutative exterior powers of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We explore their relation to the theory of organising matrices and thus to the Galois module structure of Selmer modules. In concrete applications, we relate our general theory to the formulation of refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type and to the Galois structure of Tate-Shafarevich and Selmer groups of abelian varieties.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$ and let $\calf/F$ be a $\Z_p^{\N}$-extension, unramified outside a finite set of places of $F$. Assuming that all ramified places are totally ramified, we define a pro-characteristic ideal associated to the Pontrjagin dual of the $p$-primary Selmer group of $A$, in order to formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for the non-noetherian commutative Iwasawa algebra $\Z_p[[\Gal(\calf/F)]]$ (which we also prove for a constant abelian variety). To do this we first show the relation between the characteristic i…
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field k and F a finite Galois extension of k. Let p be a prime number. Then under certain not-too-stringent conditions on A and F we investigate the explicit Galois structure of the p-primary Selmer group of A over F. We also use the results so obtained to derive new bounds on the growth of the Selmer rank of A over extensions of k.
Let $F$ be a number field unramified at an odd prime $p$ and $F_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extension of $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. Büyükboduk and the first named author have defined modified Selmer groups associated to $A$ over $F_\infty$. Assuming that the Pontryagin dual of these Selmer groups are torsion $\mathbf{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F_\infty/F)]]$-modules, we give an explicit sufficient condition for the rank of the Mordell-Weil group $A(F_n)$ to be bounded as $n$ varies.
Under suitable hypotheses, we construct a probability measure on the set of closed maximal isotropic subspaces of a locally compact quadratic space over F_p. A random subspace chosen with respect to this measure is discrete with probability 1, and the dimension of its intersection with a fixed compact open maximal isotropic subspace is a certain nonnegative-integer-valued random variable. We then prove that the p-Selmer group of an elliptic curve is naturally the intersection of a discrete maximal isotropic subspace with a compact open maximal isotropic subspace in a locally compact quadratic …
Given a prime number $p$, Bloch and Kato showed how the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $K$ is determined by the $p$-adic Tate module. In general, the $p^m$-Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}_{p^m} A$ need not be determined by the mod $p^m$ Galois representation $A[p^m]$; we show, however, that this is the case if $p$ is large enough. More precisely, we exhibit a finite explicit set of rational primes $Σ$ depending on $K$ and $A$, such that $\mathrm{Sel}_{p^m} A$ is determined by $A[p^m]$ for all $p \not \in Σ$. In the course of the argument we describe the flat c…
We continue the investigation of the distribution of $\ell^{\infty}$-Selmer groups in degree $\ell$ twist families of Galois modules over number fields begun in the previous paper. Building off the work on higher Selmer groups in that part, we find conditions under which we can compute the distribution of the $\ell^{\infty}$-Selmer groups for a given degree $\ell$ twist family. Along the way, we show that the average rank in the quadratic twist family of any given abelian variety over a number field is bounded.
There is a known analogy between growth questions for class groups and for Selmer groups. If $p$ is a prime, then the $p$-torsion of the ideal class group grows unboundedly in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of a fixed number field $K$, so one expects the same for the $p$-Selmer group of a nonzero abelian variety over $K$. This Selmer group analogue is known in special cases and we prove it in general, along with a version for arbitrary global fields.
The first part of the paper gives a new proof of self-duality for Selmer groups: if A is an abelian variety over a number field K, and F/K is a Galois extension with Galois group G, then the Q_pG-representation naturally associated to the p-infinity Selmer group of A/F is self-dual. The second part describes a method for obtaining information about parities of Selmer ranks from the local Tamagawa numbers of A in intermediate extensions of F/K.
Let $F$ be a number field unramified at an odd prime $p$ and $F_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extension of $F$. Generalizing Kobayashi plus/minus Selmer groups for elliptic curves, Büyükboduk and Lei have defined modified Selmer groups, called signed Selmer groups, for certain non-ordinary $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)$-representations. In particular, their construction applies to abelian varieties defined over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at primes of $F$ dividing $p$. Assuming that these Selmer groups are cotorsion $\mathbf{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F_\infty/F)]]$-modules, we sh…
Let A be an abelian variety defined over anumber field F. In this paper, we will investigate the growth of p-rank of the fine Selmer group in three situations. In particular, in each of these situations, we show that there is a strong analogy between the growth of the p-rank of the fine Selmer group and the growth of the p-rank of the class groups.
We introduce a common generalization of essentially all known methods for explicit computation of Selmer groups, which are used to bound the ranks of abelian varieties over global fields. We also simplify and extend the proofs relating what is computed to the cohomologically-defined Selmer groups. Selmer group computations have been practical for many Jacobians of curves over Q of genus up to 2 since the 1990s, but our approach is the first to be practical for general curves of genus 3. We show that our approach succeeds on some genus-3 examples defined by polynomials with small coefficients.
Consider an abelian variety $A$ defined over a global field $K$ and let $L/K$ be a $\Z_p^d$-extension, unramified outside a finite set of places of $K$, with $\Gal(L/K)=Γ$. Let $Λ(Γ):=\Z_p[[Γ]]$ denote the Iwasawa algebra. In this paper, we study how the characteristic ideal of the $Λ(Γ)$-module $X_L$, the dual $p$-primary Selmer group, varies when $L/K$ is replaced by a intermediate $\Z_p^e$-extension.
We assign functorially a $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice with semisimple Frobenius action to each abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This establishes an equivalence of categories that describes abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_p$ avoiding $\sqrt{p}$ as an eigenvalue of Frobenius in terms of simple commutative algebra. The result extends the isomorphism classification of Waterhouse and Deligne's equivalence for ordinary abelian varieties.
The category of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is shown to be anti-equivalent to a category of $\mathbb{Z}$-lattices that are modules for a non-commutative pro-ring of endomorphisms of a suitably chosen direct system of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q$. On full subcategories cut out by a finite set $w$ of conjugacy classes of Weil $q$-numbers, the anti-equivalence is represented by what we call $w$-locally projective abelian varieties.
Let $q$ be a prime with $q \equiv 7 \mod 8$, and let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$. Then $2$ splits in $K$, and we write $\mathfrak{p}$ for either of the primes $K$ above $2$. Let $K_\infty$ be the unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$ with $n$-th layer $K_n$. For certain quadratic extensions $F/K$, we prove a simple exact formula for the $λ$-invariant of the Galois group of the maximal abelian 2-extension unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$ of the field $F_\infty = FK_\infty$. Equivalently, our result determines the exact $\mathbb{Z}_2$-corank of certain Selmer gr…
In this paper, we study the fine Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We show that under appropriate congruence conditions, if the dual fine Selmer group of one is pseudo-null, so is the other. Our results also compare the $π$-primary submodules of the two dual fine Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the structure of Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension and the structure of the dual fine Selmer group over the said admissible $p$-adic Lie extension.
We show that the logarithmic version of the syntomic cohomology of Fontaine and Messing for semistable varieties over $p$-adic rings extends uniquely to a cohomology theory for varieties over $p$-adic fields that satisfies $h$-descent. This new cohomology - syntomic cohomology - is a Bloch-Ogus cohomology theory, admits period map to étale cohomology, and has a syntomic descent spectral sequence (from an algebraic closure of the given field to the field itself) that is compatible with the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence on the étale side. In relative dimension zero we recover the potentiall…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$. We prove a control theorem for the fine Selmer group of the abelian variety $A$ which essentially says that the kernel and cokernel of the natural restriction maps in a given $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ are finite and bounded. We emphasise that our result does not have any constraints on the reduction of $A$ and the ramification of $F_\infty/F$. As a first consequence of the control theorem, we show that the fine Tate-Shafarevich group over an arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension has trivial $Λ$-corank. We then derive an as…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$. In this paper, we study the structure of the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over $p$-adic Lie extensions $F_\infty$ of $F$ which are obtained by adjoining to $F$ the $p$-division points of an abelian variety $A$ defined over $F$. The main focus of the paper is the calculation of the $\Gal(F_\infty/F)$-Euler characteristic of the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$. The final section illustrates the main theory with the example of an elliptic curve of conductor 294.
We study (weak) log abelian varieties with constant degeneration in the log flat topology. If the base is a log point, we further study the endomorphism algebras of log abelian varieties. In particular, we prove the dual short exact sequence for isogenies, Poincaré complete reducibility theorem for log abelian varieties, and the semi-simplicity of the endomorphism algebras of log abelian varieties.
In this paper we study super-isolated abelian varieties, that is, abelian varieties over finite fields whose isogeny class contains a single isomorphism class. The goal of this paper is to (1) characterize whether a product of super-isolated varieties is super-isolated, and (2) characterize which super-isolated abelian varieties admit principal polarizations, and how many up to polarized isomorphisms.
We study the rank of the $p$-Selmer group $Sel_p(A/k)$ of an abelian variety $A/k$, where $k$ is a function field. If $K/k$ is a quadratic extension and $F/k$ is a dihedral extension and the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-corank of $Sel_p (A/K)$ is odd, we show that the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-corank of $Sel_p(A/F) \geq [F:K]$. The result uses the theory of local constants developed by Mazur-Rubin for elliptic curves over number fields.
We use an Euler system of Heegner cycles to bound the Selmer group associated to a modular form of higher even weight twisted by a ring class character. This is an extension of Nekovar's result that uses Bertolini and Darmon's refinement of Kolyvagin's ideas.
