Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$. In this paper, we study the structure of the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over $p$-adic Lie extensions $F_\infty$ of $F$ which are obtained by adjoining to $F$ the $p$-division points of an abelian variety $A$ defined over $F$. The main focus of the paper is the calculation of the $\Gal(F_\infty/F)$-Euler characteristic of the $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$. The final section illustrates the main theory with the example of an elliptic curve of conductor 294.
The first part of the paper is a survey of recent results about the cohomology of $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules and its applications to the theory of Selmer complexes. In the second part we formulate a version of the Main Conjecture for $p$-adic representations which are semistable at $p$ and discuss some related topics.
The main conjecture of Iwasawa theory is a conjecture on the relation between a Selmer group and a conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function. This conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function is expected to satisfy a conjectural functional equation in a certain sense. In view of the main conjecture and this conjectural functional equation, one would expect to have certain algebraic relationship between the Selmer group attached to a Galois representation and the Selmer group attached to the Tate twist of the dual of the Galois representation. It is precisely a component of this algebraic relationship that this p…
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
We compare the Pontryagin duals of fine Selmer groups of two congruent $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible pro-$p$, $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of number fields $K$. We prove that in several natural settings the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin duals are pseudo-isomorphic over the Iwasawa algebra; if the coranks of the fine Selmer groups are not equal, then we can still prove inequalities between the $μ$-invariants. In the special case of a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty/K$, we also compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups, even in situations …
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with good supersingular reduction at a prime $p\geq 3$ and $a_p=0$. We generalise the definition of Kobayashi's plus/minus Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^\infty})$ to $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ containing $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^\infty})$, using the theory of $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules and Berger's comparison isomorphisms. We show that these Selmer groups can be equally described using the "jumping conditions" of Kobayashi via the theory of overconvergent power series. Moreover, we show that such an approach gives the usual Selmer group…
Samit Dasgupta has proved a formula factoring a certain restriction of a 3-variable Rankin-Selberg $p$-adic $L$-function as a product of a 2-variable $p$-adic $L$-function related to the adjoint representation of a Hida family and a Kubota-Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-function. We prove a result involving Selmer groups that along with Dasgupta's result is consistent with the main conjectures associated to the 4-dimensional representation (to which the 3-variable $p$-adic $L$-function is associated), the $3$-dimensional representation (to which the $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-function is associated) and…
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $A/F$ an abelian variety. Let $K/F$ be an $ł$-adic Lie extension ($ł\neq p$) unramified outside a finite set of primes $S$ and such that $\Gal(K/F)$ has no elements of order $ł$. We shall prove that, under certain conditions, $Sel_A(K)_ł^\vee$ has no nontrivial pseudo-null submodule.
We provide applications to studying the behavior of Selmer groups under specialization. We consider Selmer groups associated to four dimensional Galois representations coming from (i) the tensor product of two cuspidal Hida families $F$ and $G$, (ii) its cyclotomic deformation, (iii) the tensor product of a cusp form $f$ and the Hida family $G$, where $f$ is a classical specialization of $F$ with weight $k \geq 2$. We prove control theorems to relate (a) the Selmer group associated to the tensor product of Hida families $F$ and $G$ to the Selmer group associated to its cyclotomic deformation a…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and $p$ an odd prime where $E$ has good supersingular reduction. Let $F_1$ denote the characteristic power series of the Pontryagin dual of the fine Selmer group of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ and let $F_2$ denote the greatest common divisor of Pollack's plus and minus $p$-adic $L$-functions or Sprung's sharp and flat $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to $E$, depending on whether $a_p(E)=0$ or $a_p(E)\ne0$. We study a link between the divisors of $F_1$ and $F_2$ in the Iwasawa algebra. This gives new insights into probl…
In this paper, we study the fine Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We show that under appropriate congruence conditions, if the dual fine Selmer group of one is pseudo-null, so is the other. Our results also compare the $π$-primary submodules of the two dual fine Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the structure of Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension and the structure of the dual fine Selmer group over the said admissible $p$-adic Lie extension.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve---defined over a number field $K$---without complex multiplication and with good ordinary reduction at all the primes above a rational prime $p \geq 5$. We construct a pairing on the dual $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over any strongly admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $K_\infty/K$ under the assumption that it is a torsion module over the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group $G=\operatorname{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$. Under some mild additional hypotheses this gives an algebraic functional equation of the conjectured $p$-adic L-function. As an application we construct comp…
In this paper we study when two congruent $l$-adic Galois representations have congruent Selmer groups. We obtain results for representations from cyclotomic characters, Hecke characters and adjoints of modular forms.
Let $p$ be a prime number, and let $K$ be a $p$-adic local field. We study a class of semistable $p$-adic Galois representations of $K$, which we call {\it triangulordinary} because it includes the ordinary ones yet allows non-étale behavior in the associated $(ϕ,Γ_K)$-modules over the Robba ring. Our main result provides a description of the Bloch--Kato local condition of such representations. We also propose a program, using variational techniques, that would give a definition of the Selmer group along the eigencurve of Coleman--Mazur, including notably its nonordinary locus.
In this article, we set up a strategy to prove one divisibility towards the main Iwasawa conjecture for the Selmer groups attached to the twisted adjoint modular Galois representations associated to Hida families. This conjecture asserts the equality of the p-adic L-function interpoling the critical values of the symmetric square of the modular forms in these families and the characteristic ideal of the associated Selmer group. The idea is to introduce a third characteristic ideal containing informations on the congruences between cuspidal Siegel modular forms of genus 2 and the Klingen type E…
For an elliptic curve over the rational number field and a prime number $p$, we study the structure of the classical Selmer group of $p$-power torsion points. In our previous paper \cite{Ku6}, assuming the main conjecture and the non-degeneracy of the $p$-adic height pairing, we proved that the structure of the Selmer group with respect to $p$-power torsion points is determined by some analytic elements $\tildeδ_{m}$ defined from modular symbols. In this paper, we do not assume the main conjecture nor the non-degeneracy of the $p$-adic height pairing, and study the structure of Selmer groups, …
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global function field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$ and let $K/F$ be a $p$-adic Lie extension with Galois group $G$. We provide a formula for the Euler characteristic $χ(G,Sel_A(K)_p)$ of the $p$-part of the Selmer group of $A$ over $K$. In the special case $G=\mathbb{Z}_p^d$ and $A$ a constant ordinary variety, using Akashi series, we show how the Euler characteristic of the dual of $Sel_A(K)_p$ is related to special values of a $p$-adic $\mathcal{L}$-function.
We develop a theory of `non-abelian higher special elements' in the non-commutative exterior powers of the Galois cohomology of $p$-adic representations. We explore their relation to the theory of organising matrices and thus to the Galois module structure of Selmer modules. In concrete applications, we relate our general theory to the formulation of refined conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type and to the Galois structure of Tate-Shafarevich and Selmer groups of abelian varieties.
Using the theory of $(ϕ,Γ)$-modules and the formalism of Selmer complexes we construct the p-adic height for p-adic representations with coefficients in an affinoid algebra over $Q_p$.
Let us consider a $p$-adic Lie extension of a number field $K$ which fits into the setting of non-commutative Iwasawa theory formulated by Coates-Fukaya-Kato-Sujatha-Venjakob. For the first main result, we will prove the control theorem of Selmer group associated to a motive, which generalizes previous results by the second author and Greenberg. For the second main result, we prove the functional equation of the dual Selmer groups, which generalizes previous results by Greenberg, Perrin-Riou and Zabradi. Note that our proof of the functional equation is different from the proof of Zabradi even…
This article is the first of a pair of articles dealing with the Iwasawa theory of modular forms of weight 1 and, more generally, of Artin representations satisfying certain conditions. The main results in this part analyze the structure of certain Selmer groups for the Artin representation. In particular, it is shown that the Selmer groups are co-torsion as $Λ$-modules. For each Selmer group, we consider a generator of the characteristic ideal of its Pontrjagin dual. We call that the algebraic p-adic L-function. We also construct an analytic $p$-adic L-function via deformation to higher weigh…
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field F, and let p be a prime >= 5. In this paper we study the structure of the Selmer group of E over p-adic Lie extensions $F_\infty$ of F. In particular, under certain global and local conditions on $F_\infty$ we relate the generalised $Gal(F_\infty / F)$-Euler characteristic of $Sel(E / F_\infty)$ to the generalised Euler characteristic of the Selmer group over the cyclotomic Zp-extension of F. This invariant generalises the classical Euler characteristic to the case when the rank of E(F) is positive. Moreover, we show that the global and lo…
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
If E is an elliptic curve defined over a number field and p is a prime of good ordinary reduction for E, a theorem of Rubin relates the p-adic height pairing on the p-power Selmer group of E to the first derivative of a cohomologically defined p-adic L-function attached to E. Bertolini and Darmon have defined a sequence of "derived" p-adic heights. In this paper we give an alternative definition of the p-adic height pairing and prove a generalization of Rubin's result, relating the derived heights to higher derivatives of p-adic L-functions. We also relate degeneracies in the derived heights t…
Let $F$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$, $K/F$ an $\ell$-adic Lie extension ($\ell\neq p$) and $A/F$ an abelian variety. We provide Euler characteristic formulas for the $Gal(K/F)$-module $Sel_A(K)_\ell$.
At a prime of ordinary reduction, the Iwasawa ``main conjecture'' for elliptic curves relates a Selmer group to a $p$-adic $L$-function. In the supersingular case, the statement of the main conjecture is more complicated as neither the Selmer group nor the $p$-adic $L$-function is well-behaved. Recently Kobayashi discovered an equivalent formulation of the main conjecture at supersingular primes that is similar in structure to the ordinary case. Namely, Kobayashi's conjecture relates modified Selmer groups, which he defined, with modified $p$-adic $L$-functions defined by the first author. In …
We discuss $p$-adic unipotent Albanese maps for curves of positive genus, extending the theory of $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms. This construction is then used to relate linear Diophantine conjectures of `Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type' to non-linear theorems of Faltings-Siegel type.
We study the variation of the dimension of the Bloch-Kato Selmer group of a p-adic Galois representation of a number field that varies in a refined family. We show that, if one restricts ourselves to representations that are, at every place dividing $p$, crystalline, non-critically refined, and with a fixed number of non-negative Hodge-Tate weights, then the dimension of the Selmer group varies essentially lower-semi-continuously. This allows to prove lower bounds for Selmer groups "by continuity", in particular to prove some predictions of the conjecture of Bloch-Kato for modular forms.
A classical twisting lemma says that given a finitely generated torsion module $M$ over the Iwasawa algebra $\mathbb{Z}_p[[Γ]]$ with $Γ\cong \mathbb{Z}_p, \ \exists$ a continuous character $θ: Γ\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_p^\times$ such that, the $ Γ^{n}$-Euler characteristic of the twist $M(θ)$ is finite for every $n$. This twisting lemma has been generalized for the Iwasawa algebra of a general compact $p$-adic Lie group $G$. In this article, we consider a further generalization of the twisting lemma to $\mathcal{T}[[G]]$ modules, where $G$ is a compact $p$-adic Lie group and $\mathcal{T}$ is a f…
We define Kolyvagin systems and Stark systems attached to $p$-adic representations in the case of arbitrary `core rank' (the core rank is a measure of the generic Selmer rank in a family of Selmer groups). Previous work dealt only with the case of core rank one, where the Kolyvagin and Stark systems are collections of cohomology classes. For general core rank, they are collections of elements of exterior powers of cohomology groups. We show under mild hypotheses that for general core rank these systems still control the size and structure of Selmer groups, and that the module of all Kolyvagin …
We bound Selmer groups attached to Grossencharacters of CM elliptic curves by the appropriate $L$-value. Our method is to use Kato's explicit reciprocity law and the Main Conjecture as proved by Rubin. These results are then used together with work of Han and fundamental results of Nekovar to bound the torsion in the image of the $p$-adic cycle class map for self products of CM elliptic curves. Our results are valid for Chow groups of arbitrary codimension for almost all $p$.
We show that the logarithmic version of the syntomic cohomology of Fontaine and Messing for semistable varieties over $p$-adic rings extends uniquely to a cohomology theory for varieties over $p$-adic fields that satisfies $h$-descent. This new cohomology - syntomic cohomology - is a Bloch-Ogus cohomology theory, admits period map to étale cohomology, and has a syntomic descent spectral sequence (from an algebraic closure of the given field to the field itself) that is compatible with the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence on the étale side. In relative dimension zero we recover the potentiall…
We study the Selmer group of an elliptic curve over an admissible p-adic Lie extension of a number field F . We give a formula for the Akashi series attached to this module, in terms of the corresponding objects for the cyclotomic Zp-extension and certain correction terms. This extends our earlier work [arXiv:math/0404431], in particular since it applies to elliptic curves having split multiplicative reduction at some primes above p, in which case the Akashi series can have additional zeros.
In this paper, we study the Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We will show that under appropriate congruence condition, if the dual Selmer group of one satisfies the $\M_H(G)$-property, so will the other. In the event that the $\M_H(G)$-property holds, and assuming certain further hypothesis on the decomposition of primes in the $p$-adic Lie extension, we compare the ranks of the $π$-free quotient of the two dual Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the characteristic elements attached to the Selmer groups. We also s…

We study the $Λ$-module structure of the ordinary parts of the arithmetic cohomology groups of modular Jacobians made out of various towers of modular curves. We prove that the ordinary parts of $Λ$-adic Selmer groups coming from two different towers have "almost same" $Λ$-module structures. We also prove the cotorsionness of $Λ$-adic Tate-Shafarevich group under mild assumptions.
In this paper, we will study the pseudo-nullity of the fine Selmer group and its related question. Namely, we investigate certain situations, where one can deduce the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a general Galois module over a admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $F_{\infty}$ from the knowledge that pseudo-nullity of the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of $F_{\infty}$ at which every prime of $F_{\infty}$ above $p$ splits completely. In particular, this gives us a way to construct examples of the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a …
In this article, we study the pseudo-isomorphism class of the dual fine Selmer group $X$ attached to a $p$-adic Galois deformation whose deformation ring $Λ$ is isomorphic to the ring of formal power series. By using the "Kolyvagin system" arising from a given Euler system $c$, we shall construct ideals $C_i(c)$ of $Λ$, and prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ approximate the higher Fitting ideals of $X$ under suitable hypothesis. In particular, we shall prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ arising from the Euler system of Beilinson-Kato elements determine the pseudo-isomorphism classes of the dual fine S…
In a recent paper, Castella and Hsieh proved results for Selmer groups associated with Galois representations attached to newforms twisted by Hecke characters of an imaginary quadratic field. These results are obtained under the so-called Heegner hypothesis that the imaginary quadratic field satisfies with respect to the level of the modular form. In particular, Castella and Hsieh prove the rank 0 case of the Bloch-Kato conjecture for $L$-functions of modular forms in their setting. The key point of the work of Castella and Hsieh is a remarkable link between generalized Heegner cycles and $p$-…
Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field with either good ordinary reduction or multiplicative reduction at each prime of $F$ above $p$. We shall study the characteristic element of the Selmer group of $E$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension. In particular, we relate the order of vanishing of these characteristic element evaluated at Artin representations to the Selmer coranks and their twists in the intermediate subextensions of the $p$-adic Lie extension.
In this paper, we consider the question of the complete faithfulness of the $p$-free quotient module of the dual Selmer groups of elliptic curves defined over a noncommutative $p$-adic Lie extension. Our question will refine previous questions on the complete faithfulness of dual Selmer groups. We also consider the question of the triviality of the central torsion submodules of these Iwasawa modules and we see that this latter question is intimately related to the former. We will also formulate and study analogous questions for the dual Selmer groups of Hida deformations. We then give positive…
We study irreducible odd mod $p$ Galois representations $\barρ \colon \mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to G(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$, for $F$ a totally real number field and $G$ a general reductive group. For $p \gg_{G, F} 0$, we show that any $\barρ$ that lifts locally, and at places above $p$ to de Rham and Hodge-Tate regular representations, has a geometric $p$-adic lift. We also prove non-geometric lifting results without any oddness assumption.
In this paper, we study completely faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules with applications to the study of Selmer groups. Namely, if $G$ is a nonabelian group belonging to certain classes of polycyclic pro-$p$ group, we establish the abundance of faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules, i.e., non-trivial torsion modules whose global annihilator ideal is zero. We then show that such $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules occur naturally in arithmetic, namely in the form of Selmer groups of elliptic curves and Selmer groups of Hida deformations. It is interesting to note that faithful Selmer gr…
