The $p^\infty$-fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve $E$ over a number field $F$ is a subgroup of the classical $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over $F$. Fine Selmer group is closely related to the 1st and 2nd Iwasawa cohomology groups. Coates-Sujatha observed that the structure of the fine Selmer group of $E$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension of a number field is intricately related to some deep questions in classical Iwasawa theory; for example, Iwasawa's classical $μ$-invariant vanishing conjecture. In this article, we study the properties of the $p^\infty$-fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve over certain $p$-adic Lie extensions of a number field. We also define and discuss $p^\infty$-fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve over function fields of characteristic $p$ and also of characteristic $\ell \neq p.$ We relate our study with a conjecture of Jannsen.
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves over noncommutative extensions has been a fruitful area of research. The central object of this paper is to use Iwasawa theory over the $GL(2)$ extension to study the dual Selmer group over the $PGL(2)$ extension.
For an odd prime $p$ and a supersingular elliptic curve over a number field, this article introduces a fine signed residual Selmer group, under certain hypotheses on the base field. This group depends purely on the residual representation at $p$, yet captures information about the Iwasawa theoretic invariants of the signed $p^\infty$-Selmer group that arise in supersingular Iwasawa theory. Working in this residual setting provides a natural framework for studying congruences modulo $p$ in Iwasawa theory.
This note shows how to use the framework of Euler characteristic formulae to study Selmer groups of abelian varieties in certain dihedral or anticyclotomic extensions of CM fields via Iwasawa main conjectures, and in particular how to verify the p-part of the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this setting. When the Selmer group is cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we obtain the p-part of formula predicted by the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. When the Selmer group is not cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we give a con…
This article is the first of a pair of articles dealing with the Iwasawa theory of modular forms of weight 1 and, more generally, of Artin representations satisfying certain conditions. The main results in this part analyze the structure of certain Selmer groups for the Artin representation. In particular, it is shown that the Selmer groups are co-torsion as $Λ$-modules. For each Selmer group, we consider a generator of the characteristic ideal of its Pontrjagin dual. We call that the algebraic p-adic L-function. We also construct an analytic $p$-adic L-function via deformation to higher weigh…

We compare the Pontryagin duals of fine Selmer groups of two congruent $p$-adic Galois representations over admissible pro-$p$, $p$-adic Lie extensions $K_\infty$ of number fields $K$. We prove that in several natural settings the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin duals are pseudo-isomorphic over the Iwasawa algebra; if the coranks of the fine Selmer groups are not equal, then we can still prove inequalities between the $μ$-invariants. In the special case of a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty/K$, we also compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of the fine Selmer groups, even in situations …
In this paper, we compare the structure of Selmer groups of certain classes of Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. Namely, we show that the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations have the same elementary representations when the two Galois representations in question are either Tate dual to each other or are congruent to each other. In the first situation, our result gives a partial answer to the question of Greenberg on whether the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations that are…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. Associated to a pair $(E, \mathcal{F}_\infty)$ consisting of a rational elliptic curve $E$ and a $p$-adic Lie extension $\mathcal{F}_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, is the $p$-primary Selmer group $Sel_{p^\infty}(E/\mathcal{F}_\infty)$ of $E$ over $\mathcal{F}_\infty$. In this paper, we study the arithmetic statistics for the algebraic structure of this Selmer group. The results provide insights into the asymptotics for the growth of Mordell--Weil ranks of elliptic curves in noncommutative towers.
We study the average behaviour of the Iwasawa invariants for the Selmer groups of elliptic curves, setting out new directions in arithmetic statistics and Iwasawa theory.
We establish a duality result proving the `functional equation' of the characteristic ideal of the Selmer group associated to a nearly ordinary Hilbert modular form over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ extension of a totally real number field. Further, we use this result to establish a duality or algebraic `functional equation' for the `big' Selmer groups associated to the corresponding nearly ordinary Hida deformation. The multivariable cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for nearly ordinary Hida family of Hilbert modular forms is not established yet and this can be thought of as an evidence t…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field which has good reduction at every prime above $p$. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that the $η$-eigenspace and the $\barη$-eigenspace of mixed signed Selmer group of the elliptic curve are pseudo-isomorphic. As a corollary, we show that the $η$-eigenspace is trivial if and only if the $\barη$-eigenspace is trivial. Our results can be thought as a reflection principle which relate an Iwasawa module in a given eigenspace with another Iwasawa module in a "reflected" eigenspace.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Under a certain Heegner hypothesis, Kolyvagin constructed cohomology classes for $E$ using $K$-CM points and conjectured they did not all vanish. Conditional on this conjecture, he described the Selmer rank of $E$ using his system of classes. We extend work of Wei Zhang to prove new cases of Kolyvagin's conjecture by considering congruences of modular forms modulo large powers of $p $. Additionally, we prove an analogous result, and give a description of the Selmer rank, in a complementary "definite" case (usi…
The main conjecture of Iwasawa theory is a conjecture on the relation between a Selmer group and a conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function. This conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function is expected to satisfy a conjectural functional equation in a certain sense. In view of the main conjecture and this conjectural functional equation, one would expect to have certain algebraic relationship between the Selmer group attached to a Galois representation and the Selmer group attached to the Tate twist of the dual of the Galois representation. It is precisely a component of this algebraic relationship that this p…
In this paper, we make a study of the Iwasawa theory of an elliptic curve at a supersingular prime p along an arbitrary Z_p-extension of a number field K in the case when p splits completely in K. Generalizing work of Kobayashi and Perrin-Riou, we define restricted Selmer groups and λ^\pm, μ^\pm-invariants; we then derive asymptotic formulas describing the growth of the Selmer group in terms of these invariants. To be able to work with non-cyclotomic Z_p-extensions, a new local result is proven that gives a complete description of the formal group of an elliptic curve at a supersingular prime …
The notion of the truncated Euler characteristic for Iwasawa modules is a generalization of the the usual Euler characteristic to the case when the cohomology groups are not finite. Let $p$ be an odd prime, $E_1$ and $E_2$ be elliptic curves over a number field $F$ with semistable reduction at all primes $v|p$ such that the $\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{F}/F)$-modules $E_1[p]$ and $E_2[p]$ are irreducible and isomorphic. We compare the Iwasawa invariants of certain imprimitive multisigned Selmer groups of $E_1$ and $E_2$. Leveraging these results, congruence relations for the truncated Euler charac…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global field $F$ of positive characteristic $p$ and let $\calf/F$ be a $\Z_p^{\N}$-extension, unramified outside a finite set of places of $F$. Assuming that all ramified places are totally ramified, we define a pro-characteristic ideal associated to the Pontrjagin dual of the $p$-primary Selmer group of $A$, in order to formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for the non-noetherian commutative Iwasawa algebra $\Z_p[[\Gal(\calf/F)]]$ (which we also prove for a constant abelian variety). To do this we first show the relation between the characteristic i…
A fundamental observation of Iwasawa gives a criterion for a module over the classical Iwasawa algebra to be torsion. In this paper, we study a certain extension of this criterion. We will then apply this to study the structure of the homology of the "Iwasawa cohomology groups" and dual fine Selmer groups.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a global field $K$ of characteristic $p \ge 0$. If $A$ has nontrivial (resp. full) $K$-rational $l$-torsion for a prime $l \neq p$, we exploit the fppf cohomological interpretation of the $l$-Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}_l A$ to bound $\#\mathrm{Sel}_l A$ from below (resp. above) in terms of the cardinality of the $l$-torsion subgroup of the ideal class group of $K$. Applied over families of finite extensions of $K$, the bounds relate the growth of Selmer groups and class groups. For function fields, this technique proves the unboundedness of $l$-ranks of class…
This paper aims at studying the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the $p$-primary Selmer group. We study the growth behaviour of $p$-primary Selmer groups in $p$-power degree extensions over non-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of a number field. We prove a generalization of Kida's formula in such a case. Unlike the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, where all primes are finitely decomposed; in the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions we consider, primes may be infinitely decomposed. In the second part of the paper, we study the relationship for Iwasawa invariants with respect to congruences, obtaining refi…
We investigate fine Selmer groups for elliptic curves and for Galois representations over a number field. More specifically, we discuss Conjecture A, which states that the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve over the cyclotomic extension is a finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}_p$-module. The relationship between this conjecture and Iwasawa's classical $μ=0$ conjecture is clarified. We also present some partial results towards the question whether Conjecture A is invariant under isogenies.
We construct a compatible family of global cohomology classes (an Euler system) for the symmetric square of a modular form, and apply this to bounding Selmer groups of the symmetric square Galois representation and its twists.
We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
We study the behavior of Iwasawa invariants among ordinary deformations of a fixed residual Galois representation taking values in a reductive algebraic group G. In particular, under the assumption that these Selmer groups are cotorsion modules over the Iwasawa algebra, we show that the vanishing of the mu invariant is independent of the deformation, while the lambda invariant depends only on the ramification. This generalizes work of Greenberg-Vatsal and Emerton-Pollack and the author in the case G = GL(2).
In this article we construct characteristic elements for a certain class of Iwasawa modules in noncommutative Iwasawa theory. These elements live in the first K-group K_1(L_T) of the localisation L_T of the Iwasawa algebra L=L(G) of a p-adic Lie group G with respect to a certain Ore-Set T. The evaluation of the characteristic element of a module M under the Iwasawa algebra of the p-adic Lie group G is related to the (twisted) G-Euler characteristic of M. We apply these results to study the arithmetic of elliptic curves E (without CM) defined over a number field k in the tower K=k(E(p)) of fiel…
We extend Kobayashi's formulation of Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves at supersingular primes to include the case $a_p \neq 0$, where $a_p$ is the trace of Frobenius. To do this, we algebraically construct $p$-adic $L$-functions $L_p^{\sharp}$ and $L_p^{\flat}$ with the good growth properties of the classical Pollack $p$-adic $L$-functions that in fact match them exactly when $a_p=0$ and $p$ is odd. We then generalize Kobayashi's methods to define two Selmer groups $\Sel^{\sharp}$ and $\Sel^{\flat}$ and formulate a main conjecture, stating that each characteristic ideal of the duals of these…
Bleher et al. began studying higher codimension Iwasawa theory for classical Iwasawa modules. Subsequently, Lei and Palvannan studied an analogue for elliptic curves with supersingular reduction. In this paper, we obtain a vast generalization of the work of Lei and Palvannan. A key technique is an approach to the work of Bleher et al. that the author previously proposed. For this purpose, we also study the structure of $\pm$-norm subgroups and duality properties of multiply-signed Selmer groups.
Consider an abelian variety $A$ defined over a global field $K$ and let $L/K$ be a $\Z_p^d$-extension, unramified outside a finite set of places of $K$, with $\Gal(L/K)=Γ$. Let $Λ(Γ):=\Z_p[[Γ]]$ denote the Iwasawa algebra. In this paper, we study how the characteristic ideal of the $Λ(Γ)$-module $X_L$, the dual $p$-primary Selmer group, varies when $L/K$ is replaced by a intermediate $\Z_p^e$-extension.
Given two elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ defined over the field of rational numbers, $\mathbb{Q}$, with good reduction at an odd prime $p$ and equivalent mod $p$ Galois representation, we compare the $p$-Selmer rank, global and local root numbers of $E_1$ and $E_2$ over number fields.
We study the Selmer group associated to a $p$-ordinary newform $f \in S_{2r}(Γ_0(N))$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field $K/\mathbb{Q}$. Under certain assumptions, we prove that this Selmer group has no proper $Λ$-submodules of finite index. This generalizes work of Bertolini in the elliptic curve case. We also offer both a correction and an improvement to an earlier result on Iwasawa invariants of congruent modular forms by the present authors.
We study the variation of Iwasawa invariants of the anticyclotomic Selmer groups of congruent modular forms under the Heegner hypothesis. In particular, we show that even if the Selmer groups we study may have positive coranks, the mu-invariant vanishes for one modular form if and only if it vanishes for the other, and that their lambda-invariants are related by an explicit formula. This generalizes results of Greenberg-Vatsal for the cyclotomic extension, as well as results of Pollack-Weston and Castella-Kim-Longo for the anticyclotomic extension when the Selmer groups in question are cotorsi…
Let H be a torsionfree compact p-adic analytic group whose Lie algebra is split semisimple. We show that the quotient skewfield of fractions of the Iwasawa algebra Λ_H of H has trivial centre and use this result to classify the prime c-ideals in the Iwasawa algebra Λ_G of G := H \times \Zp. We also show that a finitely generated torsion Λ_G-module having no non-zero pseudo-null submodule is completely faithful if and only if it is has no central torsion. This has an application to the study of Selmer groups of elliptic curves.
In this paper the new techniques and results concerning the structure theory of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras are applied to arithmetic: we study Iwasawa modules over p-adic Lie extensions K of number fields k "up to pseudo-isomorphism". In particular, a close relationship is revealed between the Selmer group of abelian varieties, the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified p-extension of K as well as the Galois group of the maximal abelian outside S unramified p-extension where S is a finite set of certain places of k. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure …
In this article, we set up a strategy to prove one divisibility towards the main Iwasawa conjecture for the Selmer groups attached to the twisted adjoint modular Galois representations associated to Hida families. This conjecture asserts the equality of the p-adic L-function interpoling the critical values of the symmetric square of the modular forms in these families and the characteristic ideal of the associated Selmer group. The idea is to introduce a third characteristic ideal containing informations on the congruences between cuspidal Siegel modular forms of genus 2 and the Klingen type E…
