In this article we construct characteristic elements for a certain class of Iwasawa modules in noncommutative Iwasawa theory. These elements live in the first K-group K_1(L_T) of the localisation L_T of the Iwasawa algebra L=L(G) of a p-adic Lie group G with respect to a certain Ore-Set T. The evaluation of the characteristic element of a module M under the Iwasawa algebra of the p-adic Lie group G is related to the (twisted) G-Euler characteristic of M. We apply these results to study the arithmetic of elliptic curves E (without CM) defined over a number field k in the tower K=k(E(p)) of fields which arises by adjoining the p-power division points to k. In particular, we relate the characteristic element of the Selmer group of E over K, i.e. the algebraic p-adic L-function of E over K, to the (classical) characteristic polynomial associated with the Selmer group over the cyclotomic Z_p-extension. Finally we discuss how the formulation of a noncommutative main conjecture could look like assuming the existence of an analytic p-adic L-function.
In 2005 Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha, and Venjakob formulated a noncommutative Iwasawa main conjecture for l-adic Lie extensions of number fields. To provide evidence for this main conjecture we formulate and prove an analogous statement for l-adic Lie extensions of separated schemes of finite type over a finite field of characteristic prime to l.
We formulate and prove an analogue of the non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $\ell$-adic representations of the Galois group of a function field of characteristic $p$. We also prove a functional equation for the resulting non-commutative $L$-functions. As corollaries, we obtain non-commutative generalisations of the main conjecture for Picard-$1$-motives of Greither and Popescu and a main conjecture for abelian varieties over function fields in precise analogy to the $\operatorname{GL}_2$ main conjecture of Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha and Venjakob.
We give a survey on noncommutative main conjectures of Iwasawa theory in a geometric setting, i.e. for separated schemes of finite type over a finite field, as stated and proved by Burns and the author. We will also comment briefly on versions of the main conjecture for function fields.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. Associated to a pair $(E, \mathcal{F}_\infty)$ consisting of a rational elliptic curve $E$ and a $p$-adic Lie extension $\mathcal{F}_\infty$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, is the $p$-primary Selmer group $Sel_{p^\infty}(E/\mathcal{F}_\infty)$ of $E$ over $\mathcal{F}_\infty$. In this paper, we study the arithmetic statistics for the algebraic structure of this Selmer group. The results provide insights into the asymptotics for the growth of Mordell--Weil ranks of elliptic curves in noncommutative towers.
In this paper and a forthcoming joint one with Y. Hachimori we study Iwasawa modules over an infinite Galois extension K of a number field k whose Galois group G=G(K/k) is isomorphic to the semidirect product of two copies of the p-adic numbers. After first analyzing some general algebraic properties of the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we apply these results to the Galois group of the p-Hilbert class field over K. As a main tool we prove a Weierstrass preparation theorem for certain skew power series rings. One striking result in our work is the discovery of the abundance of faithful torsion…
Fix an odd prime $p$. Let $G$ be a compact $p$-adic Lie group containing a closed, normal, pro-$p$ subgroup $H$ which is abelian and such that $G/H$ is isomorphic to the additive group of $p$-adic integers $\mathbbZ_p$ . First we assume that $H$ is finite and compute the Whitehead group of the Iwasawa algebra, $Λ(G)$, of $G$. We also prove some results about certain localisation of $Λ(G)$ needed in Iwasawa theory. Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $F_{\infty}$ be an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension of $F$ with Galois group $G$. The computation of the Whitehead groups are used to …
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $f$ be a nearly ordinary Hilbert modular Hecke eigenform defined over a totally real field $F$. Let $\mathbb{I}$ be an irreducible component of the universal nearly ordinary or locally cyclotomic deformation of the representation of $\mathrm{Gal}_F$ that is associated to $f$. We study the deformation rings over a $p$-adic Lie extension $F_\infty$ that contains the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. More precisely, we prove a control theorem about these rings. We introduce a category $\mathfrak{M}_{\mathcal H}^{\mathbb I}(\mathcal G)$, where $\mathcal G=\mat…
In this article I generalise previous computations (by K. Kato, T. Hara and myself) of K_1 (only up to p-power torsion) of p-adic group rings of finite non-abelian p-groups in terms of p-adic group rings of abelian subquotients of the group. Such computation have applications in non-commutative Iwasawa theory due to a strategy proposed by D. Burns, K. Kato (and a modification by T. Hara) for deducing non-commutative main conjectures from commutative main conjectures and certain congruences between special L-values. However, I do not say anything about Iwasawa theory in this article. The detail…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, $F$ be a number field and consider a uniform infinite pro-$p$ extension $F_\infty$ of $F$ with Galois group $G=Gal(F_\infty/F)$. Let \[G=G_0\supset G_1\supset\dots \supset G_n\supset G_{n+1}\supset \dots\] be the descending $p$ central series of $G$ and set $F_n:=F_\infty^{G_n}$. Assume that $G$ is uniform and that $F_\infty$ contains the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. Denote by $A_n$ the $p$-primary part of the class group of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F_n$. The $λ$-invariant of $F_n$ coincides with the corank of $A_n$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p$…
Noncommutative Iwasawa theory has created a lot of interest in Whitehead groups of Iwasawa algebras of compact p-adic Lie groups with a quotient isomorphic to the additive group of p-adic integers. In this paper we compute Whitehead groups of Iwasawa algebra of a pro-p compact p-adic Lie group of dimension one. We also give results on Whitehead groups of the localisation of such Iwasawa algebras at the canonical Ore set defined by Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha and Venjakob.
The main conjectures in Iwasawa theory predict the relationship between the Iwasawa modules and the $p$-adic $L$-functions. Using a certain proved formulation of the main conjecture, Greither and Kurihara described explicitly the (initial) Fitting ideals of the Iwasawa modules for the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of finite abelian extensions of totally real fields. In this paper, we generalize the algebraic theory behind their work by developing the theory of ``shifts of Fitting invariants.'' As applications to Iwasawa theory, we obtain a noncommutative version and a two-variable versi…
In this paper, we are going to establish a simultaneous generalization of the relative Iwasawa theory proposed by Kedlaya-Pottharst and the relative $p$-adic Hodge theory after Kedlaya-Liu. We call this Hodge-Iwasawa theory in the sense that one could apply the theory to study noncommutative Iwasawa cohomology and noncommutative Iwasawa theories in families and meanwhile one could apply the theory to study the deformation theory of étale local systems or families of representations of fundamental groups or the equivariant constructible $p$-adic sheaves, with more sophisticated point of view co…
Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves over noncommutative extensions has been a fruitful area of research. The central object of this paper is to use Iwasawa theory over the $GL(2)$ extension to study the dual Selmer group over the $PGL(2)$ extension.
We describe an explicit `higher rank' Iwasawa theory for zeta elements associated to the multiplicative group over abelian extensions of general number fields. We then show that this theory leads to a concrete new strategy for proving special cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. As a first application of this approach, we use it to prove new cases of the conjecture for Tate motives over natural families of abelian CM extensions of totally real fields for which the relevant $p$-adic $L$-functions possess trivial zeroes.
Let $f$ be a normalized cuspidal eigen-newform of level coprime to $p$ with $a_p(f)=0$. We formulate both integral signed Iwasawa main conjectures and analytic Iwasawa man conjectures attached to the symmetric square motive of $f$ twisted by an auxiliary Dirichlet character. We show that the Beilinson--Flach elements attached to the symmetric square motive factorize into integral signed Beilinson--Flach elements, giving evidence towards the existence a rank-two Euler system predicted by Perrin-Riou. We use these integral elements to prove one inclusion in the integral and analytic Iwasawa main…
This paper contains a complete proof of Fukaya's and Kato's epsilon$-isomorphism conjecture in [23] for invertible Λ-modules (the case of V = V_0(r) where V_0 is unramified of dimension 1). Our results rely heavily on Kato's unpublished proof of (commutative) epsilon-isomorphisms for one dimensional representations of G_{Q_p} in [27], but apart from fixing some sign-ambiguities in (loc.\ cit.) we use the theory of (ϕ,Γ)-modules instead of syntomic cohomology. Also, for the convenience of the reader we give a slight modification or rather reformulation of it in the language of [23] and extend i…
Let $s\colon X\rightarrow \operatorname{Spec} \mathbb{F}$ be a separated scheme of finite type over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p$, let $Λ$ be a not necessarily commutative $\mathbb{Z}_p$-algebra with finitely many elements, and let $\mathcal{F}^\bullet$ be a perfect complex of $Λ$-sheaves on the étale site of $X$. We show that the ratio $L(\mathcal{F}^\bullet,T)/L(R s_!\mathcal{F}^\bullet,T)$, which is a priori an element of $K_1(Λ[[T]])$, has a canonical preimage in $K_1(Λ[T])$. We use this to prove a version of the noncommmutative Iwasawa main conjecture for $p$-adic Lie …
We construct an Euler system of $p$-adic zeta elements over the eigencurve which interpolates Kato's zeta elements over all classical points. Applying a big regulator map gives rise to a purely algebraic construction of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function over the eigencurve. As a first application of these ideas, we prove the equality of the $p$-adic $L$-functions associated with a critical-slope refinement of a modular form by the works of Bellaïche/Pollack-Stevens and Kato/Perrin-Riou.
In this article, we study the Iwasawa theory for Hilbert modular forms over the anticyclotomic extension of a CM field. We prove a one sided divisibility result toward the Iwasawa main conjecture. The proof relies on the first and second reciprocity law relating theta elements to Heegner points Euler system. As a by-product we also prove certain Bloch-Kato type result in the rank $0$ case and a parity conjecture
Let $Λ$ (isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_p[[T]]$) denote the usual Iwasawa algebra and $G$ denote the Galois group of a finite Galois extension $L/K$ of totally real fields. When the non-primitive Iwasawa module over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension has a free resolution of length one over the group ring $Λ[G]$, we prove that the validity of the non-commutative Iwasawa main conjecture allows us to find a representative for the non-primitive $p$-adic $L$-function (which is an element of a $K_1$-group) in a maximal $Λ$-order. This integrality result involves a careful study of the Dieudonné det…
In Part I we review some specific properties of the $Λ$-modules in Iwasawa theory, which add structure to the general properties of Noetherian $Λ$-torsion modules. Part II deals with Kummer theory and gives a detailed construction of the Iwasawa linear space. This provides a new, simpler proof of the conjectures of Leopoldt and Gross for CM extensions. Using a construction of Thaine, we then prove that $λ^+ = 0$ in these fields, thus proving a part of Greenberg's conjecture - the fact $μ^+ = 0$ still has to be shown. In the Appendices we give some elementary partial proofs of the main facts pr…
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $F_{\infty,\infty}$ a $p$-adic Lie extension of a number field $F$ with Galois group isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_p^r\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_p$, $r\geq 1$. Under certain assumptions, we prove an asymptotic formula for the growth of $p$-exponents of the class groups in the said $p$-adic Lie extension. This generalizes a previous result of Lei, where he establishes such a formula in the case $r=1$. An important and new ingredient towards extending Lei's result rests on an asymptotic formula for a finitely generated (not necessarily torsion) $\mathbb{Z}_p[[\mathbb{Z}_p^r]]$-mod…
Let $k_{\infty}$ be a $\Z_p^d$-extension of a global function field $k$ of characteristic $p$. Let $\Cl_{k_{\infty},p}$ be the $p$ completion of the class group of $k_{\infty}$. We prove that the characteristic ideal of the Galois module $\Cl_{k_{\infty},p}$ is generated by the Stickelberger element of Gross which calculates the special values of $L$ functions.
We formulate integral Iwasawa main conjectures for suitable twists of a newform $f$ that is non-ordinary at $p$, over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions (in both the definite and the indefinite cases) as well as the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ where $p$ splits. In order to do so, we define Kobayashi-Sprung-style signed Coleman maps, which we use to introduce doubly-signed Selmer groups. In the same spirit, we construct signed (integral) Beilinson-Flach elements (out of the collection of unbounded Beilinson-Fl…
We give a survey of a couple known constructions of $p$-adic $L$-functions including Iwasawa's construction from classical Stickelberger elements. We then construct "real" Stickelberger elements, i.e., explicit elements in the Galois group ring with $\mathbb{Z}_p$ coefficients that annihilate the Sylow $p$-subgroup of the ideal class group of $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{p^{n+1}})^+$. In analogy with Iwasawa's work, we show that these elements are coherent in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers and give rise to twisted $p$-adic $L$-functions.
This paper is lead by the question whether there is a nice structure theory of finitely generated modules over the Iwasawa algebra, i.e. the completed group algebra, R of a p-adic analytic group G. For G without any p-torsion element we prove that R is an Auslander regular ring. This result enables us to give a good definition for pseudo-null R-modules. Then the category of R-modules up to pseudo-isomorphisms is studied and we obtain a weak structure theorem for the p-primary part of a finitely generated R-module. A local duality theorem as well as the Auslander-Buchsbaum equality are further …
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We prove the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture of K.Kato for the motive attached to an eigencuspform $f\in S_{k}(Γ_{0}(N))$ with arbitrary reduction type at $p$ under mild assumptions on the residual Galois representation $\barρ_{f}$. Under the same hypotheses, we also prove the generalized Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $p$-adic families of modular forms. The Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $f$ is deduced by a limit argument involving fundamental lines from a universal Iwasawa Main Conjecture over the universal deformation space of $\barρ_{f}$, which itself follows from the…
Poitou-Tate duality for the Galois group of an extension of a global field with appropriately restricted ramification can be seen as taking place between the cohomology of a compact or discrete module and the compactly-supported cohomology of its Pontryagin dual. Nekovar proved a derived variant of this in which the module is replaced by a bounded complex of modules over the group ring of R that are finitely generated over R, where R is a complete commutative local Noetherian ring with finite residue field. Here, the Pontryagin dual is replaced by the Grothendieck dual, which is itself a bound…
We show that if $E/\mathbb{Q}$ is an elliptic curve with a rational $p$-torsion for $p=2$ or $3$, then there is a congruence relation between Ramanujan's tau function and $E$ modulo $p$. We make use of such congruences to compute the Iwasawa invariants of $2$-adic and $3$-adic Mazur--Tate elements attached to Ramanujan's tau function. We also investigate numerically the Iwasawa invariants of the Mazur--Tate elements attached to an elliptic curve with additive reduction at a fixed prime number.
For a prime $p>2$, let $G$ be a semi-simple, simply connected, split Chevalley group over $\mathbb{Z}_p$, $G(1)$ be the first congruence kernel of $G$ and $Ω_{G(1)}$ be the mod-$p$ Iwasawa algebra defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$. Ardakov, Wei, Zhang have shown that if $p$ is a "nice prime " ($p \geq 5$ and $p \nmid n+1$ if the Lie algebra of $G(1)$ is of type $A_n$), then every non-zero normal element in $Ω_{G(1)}$ is a unit. Furthermore, they conjecture in their paper that their nice prime condition is superfluous. The main goal of this article is to provide an entirely new proof…
We consider $\mathbb{Z}_p^{\mathbb{N}}$-extensions $\mathcal{F}$ of a global function field $F$ and study various aspects of Iwasawa theory with emphasis on the two main themes already (and still) developed in the number fields case as well. When dealing with the Selmer group of an abelian variety $A$ defined over $F$, we provide all the ingredients to formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture relating the Fitting ideal and the $p$-adic $L$-function associated to $A$ and $\mathcal{F}$. We do the same, with characteristic ideals and $p$-adic $L$-functions, in the case of class groups (using known re…
We prove an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for the class group of the $\mathfrak{p}$-cyclotomic extension $\mathcal{F}$ of the function field $\mathbb{F}_q(θ)$ ($\mathfrak{p}$ is a prime of $\mathbb{F}_q[θ]\,$), showing that its Fitting ideal is generated by a Stickelberger element. We use this and a link between the Stickelberger element and a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic $L$-function to prove a close analog of the Ferrero-Washington theorem for $\mathcal{F}$ and to provide informations on the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic valuations of the Bernoulli-Goss numbers $β(j)$ (i.e., on the values of the Goss $ζ$-function at…
For a crystalline p-adic representation of the absolute Galois group of Qp, we define a family of Coleman maps (linear maps from the Iwasawa cohomology of the representation to the Iwasawa algebra), using the theory of Wach modules. Let f = sum(a_n q^n) be a normalized new modular eigenform and p an odd prime at which f is either good ordinary or supersingular. By applying our theory to the p-adic representation associated to f, we define two Coleman maps with values in the Iwasawa algebra of Zp^* (after extending scalars to some extension of Qp). Applying these maps to the Kato zeta elements …
In this paper, we define a two-variable analogue of Perrin-Riou's p-adic regulator map for the Iwasawa cohomology of a crystalline representation of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, over a Galois extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ whose Galois group is an abelian p-adic Lie group of dimension 2. We use this regulator map to study p-adic representations of global Galois groups over certain abelian extensions of number fields whose localisation at the primes above p are extensions of the above type. In the example of the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field of the representation atta…
In the present paper, we study the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the (strict) Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}_{\infty}$, the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, of the $p$-adic weight one cusp forms $f$, obtained via the $p$-stabilization of weight one Eisenstein series, under the assumption that a certain Eisenstein component of the $p$-ordinary universal cuspidal Hecke algebra is Gorenstein. As an application, we compute the Iwasawa invariants of ordinary modular forms of weight $k\geq 2$ with the same residual Galois representations as the one of $f$, which in our setting, is r…
In this paper, we construct a higher rank Euler system for the multiplicative group over a totally real field by using the Iwasawa main conjecture proved by Wiles. A key ingredient of the construction is to generalize the notion of the characteristic ideal. Under certain technical assumptions, we prove that all higher Fitting ideals of a certain $p$-ramified Iwasawa module are described by analytic invariants canonically associated with Stickelberger elements.
This is a completely rewritten version of the paper formerly entitled "Sheaves of Iwasawa modules, moment maps and the $\ell$-adic elliptic polylogarithm". The proof of the main result is also simplified. In the paper we study systematically the $\ell$-adic realization of the elliptic polylogarithm in the context of sheaves of Iwasawa modules. This leads to a description of the elliptic polylogarithm in terms of elliptic units. As an application we prove a precise relation between $\ell$-adic Eisenstein classes and elliptic Soulé elements. This allows to give a new proof of the formula for the…
Let $p >= 5$ be a prime and $E$ an elliptic curve without complex multiplication and let $K_\infty=Q(E[p^\infty])$ be a pro-$p$ Galois extension over a number field $K$. We consider $X(E/K_\infty)$, the Pontryagin dual of the $p$-Selmer group $\Sel_{p^\infty}(E/K_\infty)$. The size of this module is roughly measured by its rank $τ$ over a $p$-adic Galois group algebra $Λ(H)$, which has been studied in the past decade. We prove $τ>= 2$ for almost every elliptic curve under standard assumptions. Following from a result of Coates et al, $τ$ is odd if and only if $[Q(E[p]) \colon Q]/2$ is odd; we …
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the completed group algebras of a compact p-adic analytic group with coefficient ring the p-adic integers or the field of p elements to be prime, semiprime and a domain. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the localisation at semiprime ideals related to the augmentation ideals of closed normal subgroups are found. Some information is obtained about the Krull and global dimensions of the localisations. The results extend and complete work of A. Neumann and J. Coates et al.
Kato and Fukaya conjectured existence of certain elements in certain ($p$-adic) Iwasawa algebras which are related to Deligne-Langland's ($l$-adic) local epsilon constants. We prove the existence of these elements in the $l \neq p$ case.
We establish formulae for the Iwasawa invariants of Mazur--Tate elements of cuspidal eigenforms, generalizing known results in weight 2. Our first theorem deals with forms of "medium" weight, and our second deals with forms of small slope . We give examples illustrating the strange behavior which can occur in the high weight, high slope case.
In our previous work, by using Kolyvagin derivatives of elliptic units, we constructed ideals C_i of the Iwasawa algebra, and proved that the ideals C_i become "upper bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of the one and two variable p-adic unramified Iwasawa module X over an abelian extension field K_0 of an imaginary quadratic field K. In this article, by using "non-arithmetic" specialization arguments, we prove that the ideals C_i also become "lower bounds" of the higher Fitting ideals of X. In particular, we show that the ideals C_i determine the pseudo-isomorphism class of X. Note that in t…
Let $H$ be a compact $p$-adic analytic group without torsion element, whose Lie algebra is split semisimple and $\mathfrak{N}_H(G)$ be the full subcategory of the category of finitely generated modules over the Iwasawa algebra $Λ_G$ that are also finitely generated as $Λ_H$-modules, where $G = \mathbb{Z}_{p} \times H$. We show that if the class of a module $N$ in the Grothendieck group of $\mathfrak{N}_H(G)$ equals to the class of a completely faithful module, then $q(N)$ is also completely faithful, where $q(N)$ denotes the image of $N$ via the quotient functor modulo the full subcategory of …
We give a new proof of Howard's $Λ$-adic Gross-Zagier formula, which we extend to the context of indefinite Shimura curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ attached to nonsplit quaternion algebras. This formula relates the cyclotomic derivative of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function restricted to the anticyclotomic line to the cyclotomic $p$-adic heights of Heegner points over the anticyclotomic tower, and our proof, rather than inspired by the original approaches of Gross-Zagier and Perrin-Riou, is via Iwasawa theory, based on the connection between Heegner points, Beilinson-Flach elements, and their expli…
