Let $k_{\infty}$ be a $\Z_p^d$-extension of a global function field $k$ of characteristic $p$. Let $\Cl_{k_{\infty},p}$ be the $p$ completion of the class group of $k_{\infty}$. We prove that the characteristic ideal of the Galois module $\Cl_{k_{\infty},p}$ is generated by the Stickelberger element of Gross which calculates the special values of $L$ functions.
We prove the Iwasawa main conjecture over the arithmetic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension for semistable abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic $p>0$.
We study a geometric analogue of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for constant ordinary abelian varieties over $\ZZ_p^d$-extensions of function fields ramifying at a finite set of places.
For an odd prime number $p$, we study the number of generators of the unramified Iwasawa modules of the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions over Iwasawa algebra. In a previous paper of the authors, under several assumptions for an imaginary quadratic field, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the Iwasawa module to be cyclic as a module over the Iwasawa algebla. Our main result is to give methods for computation and numerical examples about the results. We remark that our results do not need the assumption that Greenberg's generalized conjecture holds.
The paper starts out from pseudomeasures (in the sense of Serre) which hold the arithmetic properties of the abelian $l$-adic Artin $L$-functions over totally real number fields. In order to generalize to non-abelian $l$-adic $L$-functions, these abelian pseudomeasures must satisfy congruences which are introduced but not yet known to be true. The relation to the ``equivariant main conjecture'' of Iwasawa theory is discussed.
We formulate and prove an analogue of the non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $\ell$-adic representations of the Galois group of a function field of characteristic $p$. We also prove a functional equation for the resulting non-commutative $L$-functions. As corollaries, we obtain non-commutative generalisations of the main conjecture for Picard-$1$-motives of Greither and Popescu and a main conjecture for abelian varieties over function fields in precise analogy to the $\operatorname{GL}_2$ main conjecture of Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha and Venjakob.
We recover a result of Iwasawa on the p-adic logarithm of principal units with the use of the value at 1 of p-adic L-functions. We deduce an Iwasawa-like result in the odd part of principal units.
We discuss the formalism of Iwasawa theory descent in the setting of the localized K_1-groups of Fukaya and Kato. We then prove interpolation formulas for the `leading terms' of the global Zeta isomorphisms that are associated to certain Tate motives and of the p-adic L-functions that are associated to certain critical motives.
We prove under mild hypotheses the three-variable Iwasawa main conjecture for $p$-ordinary modular forms in the indefinite setting. Our result is in a setting complementary to that in the work of Skinner-Urban, and it has applications to Greenberg's nonvanishing conjecture for the first derivatives at the center of $p$-adic $L$-functions of cusp forms in Hida families with root number $-1$ and to Howard's horizontal nonvanishing conjecture.
We prove an Equivariant Main Conjecture in Iwasawa Theory along any rank one, sign-normalized Drinfeld modular, split at infinity Iwasawa tower of a general function field of characteristic p, for the Iwasawa modules recently considered by Greither and Popescu, in their proof of the classical Equivariant Main Conjecture along the (arithmetic) cyclotomic Iwasawa tower.
In 2005 Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha, and Venjakob formulated a noncommutative Iwasawa main conjecture for l-adic Lie extensions of number fields. To provide evidence for this main conjecture we formulate and prove an analogous statement for l-adic Lie extensions of separated schemes of finite type over a finite field of characteristic prime to l.
We revisit the theory of Ihara $L$-functions in the context initially studied by Bass and Hashimoto and more recently by Zakharov. In particular, we study if the Artin formalism is satisfied by these $L$-functions. As an application, we give a proof of the analogue of Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula for the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite connected graphs using Ihara zeta and $L$-functions. Moreover, we relate a generator for the characteristic ideal of the finitely generated torsion Iwasawa module that governs the growth of the …
For an odd prime $p$ and a supersingular elliptic curve over a number field, this article introduces a fine signed residual Selmer group, under certain hypotheses on the base field. This group depends purely on the residual representation at $p$, yet captures information about the Iwasawa theoretic invariants of the signed $p^\infty$-Selmer group that arise in supersingular Iwasawa theory. Working in this residual setting provides a natural framework for studying congruences modulo $p$ in Iwasawa theory.
In this paper we prove that the $p$-adic $L$-function that interpolates the Rankin-Selberg product of a general weight two modular form which is unramified and non-ordinary at $p$, and an ordinary CM form of higher weight contains the characteristic ideal of the corresponding Selmer group. This is one divisibility of the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for the $p$-adic $L$-function. This generalizes an earlier work of the author to the non-ordinary case. The result of this paper plays a crucial role in the proof of Iwasawa main conjecture and refined Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer formula for supersi…
Iwasawa made the fundamental discovery that there is a close connection between the ideal class groups of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extensions of cyclotomic fields and the $p$-adic analogue of Riemann's zeta functions $$ζ(s)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n^{s}}.$$ In this paper, we show that there may also exist a parallel Iwasawa's theory corresponding to the $p$-adic analogue of Euler's deformation of zeta functions $$ϕ(s)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{(-1)^{n-1}}{n^{s}}.$$
We study equivariant Iwasawa theory for two-variable abelian extensions of an imaginary quadratic field. One of the main goals of this paper is to describe the Fitting ideals of Iwasawa modules using $p$-adic $L$-functions. We also provide an application to Selmer groups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication.
We study special values of L-functions of elliptic curves over Q twisted by Artin representations that factor through a false Tate curve extension $Q(μ_p^\infty,\sqrt[p^\infty]{m})/Q$. In this setting, we explain how to compute L-functions and the corresponding Iwasawa-theoretic invariants of non-abelian twists of elliptic curves. Our results provide both theoretical and computational evidence for the main conjecture of non-commutative Iwasawa theory.
Kurihara established a refinement of the minus-part of the Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real number fields using the higher Fitting ideals. In this paper, by using Kurihara's methods and Mazur-Rubin theory, we study the higher Fitting ideals of the plus-part of Iwasawa modules associated the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of abelian fields for an odd prime number p. We define the higher cyclotomic ideals C_i for any non-negative integer i, which are ideals of the Iwasawa algebra defined by the Kolyvagin derivative classes of circular units, and prove that they give upper and lower bounds of t…
The Iwasawa theory of CM fields has traditionally concerned Iwasawa modules that are abelian pro-p Galois groups with ramification allowed at a maximal set of primes over p such that the module is torsion. A main conjecture for such an Iwasawa module describes its codimension one support in terms of a p-adic L-function attached to the primes of ramification. In this paper, we study more general and potentially much smaller Iwasawa modules that are quotients of exterior powers of Iwasawa modules with ramification at a set of primes over p by sums of exterior powers of inertia subgroups. We show…
We establish the Iwasawa main conjecture for semi-stable abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic $p$ under certain restrictive assumptions. Namely we consider $p$-torsion free $p$-adic Lie extensions of the base field which contain the constant $\mathbb Z_p$-extension and are everywhere unramified. Under the classical $μ=0$ hypothesis we give a proof which mainly relies on the interpretation of the Selmer complex in terms of $p$-adic cohomology [TV] together with the trace formulas of [EL1].
We completely calculate the Fitting ideal of the classical $p$-ramified Iwasawa module for any abelian extension $K/k$ of totally real fields, using the shifted Fitting ideals recently developed by the second author. This generalizes former results by the first and third authors where we had to assume that only $p$-adic places may ramify in $K/k$. One of the important ingredients is the computation of some complexes in appropriate derived categories.
The main conjectures in Iwasawa theory predict the relationship between the Iwasawa modules and the $p$-adic $L$-functions. Using a certain proved formulation of the main conjecture, Greither and Kurihara described explicitly the (initial) Fitting ideals of the Iwasawa modules for the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of finite abelian extensions of totally real fields. In this paper, we generalize the algebraic theory behind their work by developing the theory of ``shifts of Fitting invariants.'' As applications to Iwasawa theory, we obtain a noncommutative version and a two-variable versi…
Let $p$ be a prime number, and $G$ a compact $p$-adic Lie group. We recall that the Iwasawa algebra $Λ(G)$ is defined to be the completed group ring of $G$ over the ring of $p$-adic integers. Interesting examples of finitely generated modules over $Λ(G),$ in which $G$ is the image of Galois in the automorphism group of a $p$-adic Galois representation, abound in arithmetic geometry. The study of such $Λ(G)$-modules arising from arithmetic geometry can be thought of as a natural generalization of Iwasawa theory. One of the cornerstones of classical Iwasawa theory is the fact that, when $G$ is t…
A fundamental observation of Iwasawa gives a criterion for a module over the classical Iwasawa algebra to be torsion. In this paper, we study a certain extension of this criterion. We will then apply this to study the structure of the homology of the "Iwasawa cohomology groups" and dual fine Selmer groups.
In this paper we prove that the p-adic L-function that interpolates the Rankin-Selberg product of a general modular form and a CM form of higher weight divides the characteristic ideal of the corresponding Selmer group. This is one divisibility of the Iwasawa main conjecture for the p-adic L-function. We prove this conjecture using the congruences between Klingen Eisensteinseries and cusp forms on the group GU(3; 1), following the strategy of a recent work of C. Skinner and E. Urban. This theorem can be used to deduce a converse of Gross-Zagier-Kolyvagin theorem and the precise BSD formula in …
We construct a new class of Iwasawa modules, which are the number field analogues of the p-adic realizations of the Picard 1-motives constructed by Deligne in the 1970s and studied extensively from a Galois module structure point of view in our recent work. We prove that the new Iwasawa modules are of projective dimension 1 over the appropriate profinite group rings. In the abelian case, we prove an Equivariant Main Conjecture, identifying the first Fitting ideal of the Iwasawa module in question over the appropriate profinite group ring with the principal ideal generated by a certain equivari…
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We prove the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture of K.Kato for the motive attached to an eigencuspform $f\in S_{k}(Γ_{0}(N))$ with arbitrary reduction type at $p$ under mild assumptions on the residual Galois representation $\barρ_{f}$. Under the same hypotheses, we also prove the generalized Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $p$-adic families of modular forms. The Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $f$ is deduced by a limit argument involving fundamental lines from a universal Iwasawa Main Conjecture over the universal deformation space of $\barρ_{f}$, which itself follows from the…
We construct an Euler system of $p$-adic zeta elements over the eigencurve which interpolates Kato's zeta elements over all classical points. Applying a big regulator map gives rise to a purely algebraic construction of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function over the eigencurve. As a first application of these ideas, we prove the equality of the $p$-adic $L$-functions associated with a critical-slope refinement of a modular form by the works of Bellaïche/Pollack-Stevens and Kato/Perrin-Riou.
Let $Λ$ (isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_p[[T]]$) denote the usual Iwasawa algebra and $G$ denote the Galois group of a finite Galois extension $L/K$ of totally real fields. When the non-primitive Iwasawa module over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension has a free resolution of length one over the group ring $Λ[G]$, we prove that the validity of the non-commutative Iwasawa main conjecture allows us to find a representative for the non-primitive $p$-adic $L$-function (which is an element of a $K_1$-group) in a maximal $Λ$-order. This integrality result involves a careful study of the Dieudonné det…
A result of Bleher, Chinburg, Greenberg, Kakde, Pappas, Sharifi and Taylor has initiated the topic of higher codimension Iwasawa theory. As a generalization of the classical Iwasawa main conjecture, they prove a relationship between analytic objects (a pair of Katz's $2$-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions) and algebraic objects (two "everywhere unramified'' Iwasawa modules) involving codimension two cycles in a $2$-variable Iwasawa algebra. We prove a result by considering the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field $K$ (where an odd prime $p$ splits) of an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $\…
The article is withdrawn. There is a gap in the proof of the vanishing of Iwasawa mu-invariant for the cyclotomic Z_p extension of a CM field, abelian over a totally real number field.
It is a general principle that objects coming from semi-simple, simply connected (split) groups have explicit presentations like Serre's presentation of semi-simple algebras and Steinberg's presentation of Chevalley groups. In this paper we give an explicit presentation (by generators and relations) of the Iwasawa algebra for the first congruence kernel of a semi-simple, simply connected Chevalley group over $\mathbb{Z}_p$, extending the proof given by Clozel for the group $Γ_1(SL_2(\mathbb{Z}_p))$, the first congruence kernel of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for primes $p>2$.
We consider $\mathbb{Z}_p^{\mathbb{N}}$-extensions $\mathcal{F}$ of a global function field $F$ and study various aspects of Iwasawa theory with emphasis on the two main themes already (and still) developed in the number fields case as well. When dealing with the Selmer group of an abelian variety $A$ defined over $F$, we provide all the ingredients to formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture relating the Fitting ideal and the $p$-adic $L$-function associated to $A$ and $\mathcal{F}$. We do the same, with characteristic ideals and $p$-adic $L$-functions, in the case of class groups (using known re…
We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
We study a geometric analogue of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for abelian varieties in the two following cases: constant ordinary abelian varieties over $Z_p^d$-extensions of function fields ($d\geq 1$) ramified at a finite set of places, and semistable abelian varieties over the arithmetic $Z_p$-extension of a function field. One of the tools we use in our proof is a pseudo-isomorphism relating the duals of the Selmer groups of $A$ and its dual abelian variety $A^t$. This holds as well over number fields and is a consequence of a quite general algebraic functional equation.
In this paper the new techniques and results concerning the structure theory of modules over non-commutative Iwasawa algebras are applied to arithmetic: we study Iwasawa modules over p-adic Lie extensions K of number fields k "up to pseudo-isomorphism". In particular, a close relationship is revealed between the Selmer group of abelian varieties, the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified p-extension of K as well as the Galois group of the maximal abelian outside S unramified p-extension where S is a finite set of certain places of k. Moreover, we determine the Galois module structure …
In this article we construct characteristic elements for a certain class of Iwasawa modules in noncommutative Iwasawa theory. These elements live in the first K-group K_1(L_T) of the localisation L_T of the Iwasawa algebra L=L(G) of a p-adic Lie group G with respect to a certain Ore-Set T. The evaluation of the characteristic element of a module M under the Iwasawa algebra of the p-adic Lie group G is related to the (twisted) G-Euler characteristic of M. We apply these results to study the arithmetic of elliptic curves E (without CM) defined over a number field k in the tower K=k(E(p)) of fiel…
In this article, we study the Iwasawa theory for Hilbert modular forms over the anticyclotomic extension of a CM field. We prove a one sided divisibility result toward the Iwasawa main conjecture. The proof relies on the first and second reciprocity law relating theta elements to Heegner points Euler system. As a by-product we also prove certain Bloch-Kato type result in the rank $0$ case and a parity conjecture
We describe an explicit `higher rank' Iwasawa theory for zeta elements associated to the multiplicative group over abelian extensions of general number fields. We then show that this theory leads to a concrete new strategy for proving special cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. As a first application of this approach, we use it to prove new cases of the conjecture for Tate motives over natural families of abelian CM extensions of totally real fields for which the relevant $p$-adic $L$-functions possess trivial zeroes.
It is well known that, for any finitely generated torsion module M over the Iwasawa algebra Z_p [[Γ ]], where Γ is isomorphic to Z_p, there exists a continuous p-adic character ρ of Γ such that, for every open subgroup U of Γ, the group of U-coinvariants M(ρ)_U is finite; here M( ρ) denotes the twist of M by ρ. This twisting lemma was already applied to study various arithmetic properties of Selmer groups and Galois cohomologies over a cyclotomic tower by Greenberg and Perrin-Riou. We prove a non commutative generalization of this twisting lemma replacing torsion modules over Z_p [[ Γ ]] by ce…
This paper aims at studying the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the $p$-primary Selmer group. We study the growth behaviour of $p$-primary Selmer groups in $p$-power degree extensions over non-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of a number field. We prove a generalization of Kida's formula in such a case. Unlike the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, where all primes are finitely decomposed; in the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions we consider, primes may be infinitely decomposed. In the second part of the paper, we study the relationship for Iwasawa invariants with respect to congruences, obtaining refi…
It is proved that, if $K$ is a complete discrete valuation field of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with residue field satisfying a mild condition, then any abelian variety over $K$ with potentially good reduction has finite $K(K^{1/p^\infty})$-rational torsion subgroup. This can be used to remove certain conditions assumed in some theorems in Iwasawa theory.
This text is a mostly self-contained textbook-like introduction to classical and modern Iwasawa Theory in Spanish language. It grew out of notes for a course that the authors gave at the annual conference of the Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM) in 2018. It covers some preliminaries from algebraic number theory and profinite algebra, the theory of the Iwasawa algebra and its modules, results about class groups in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions, $p$-adic $L$-functions for Dirichlet characters and their various constructions (along with some complex theory of $L$-functions), the cyclotomic main conj…
Given two elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ defined over the field of rational numbers, $\mathbb{Q}$, with good reduction at an odd prime $p$ and equivalent mod $p$ Galois representation, we compare the $p$-Selmer rank, global and local root numbers of $E_1$ and $E_2$ over number fields.
This article is the first of a pair of articles dealing with the Iwasawa theory of modular forms of weight 1 and, more generally, of Artin representations satisfying certain conditions. The main results in this part analyze the structure of certain Selmer groups for the Artin representation. In particular, it is shown that the Selmer groups are co-torsion as $Λ$-modules. For each Selmer group, we consider a generator of the characteristic ideal of its Pontrjagin dual. We call that the algebraic p-adic L-function. We also construct an analytic $p$-adic L-function via deformation to higher weigh…
In this paper, we make a study of the Iwasawa theory of an elliptic curve at a supersingular prime p along an arbitrary Z_p-extension of a number field K in the case when p splits completely in K. Generalizing work of Kobayashi and Perrin-Riou, we define restricted Selmer groups and λ^\pm, μ^\pm-invariants; we then derive asymptotic formulas describing the growth of the Selmer group in terms of these invariants. To be able to work with non-cyclotomic Z_p-extensions, a new local result is proven that gives a complete description of the formal group of an elliptic curve at a supersingular prime …
Iwasawa theory of Heegner points on abelian varieties of GL_2 type has been studied by, among others, Mazur, Perrin-Riou, Bertolini and Howard. The purpose of this paper, the first in a series of two, is to describe extensions of some of their results in which abelian varieties are replaced by the Galois cohomology of Deligne's p-adic representation attached to a modular form f of even weight >2. In this more general setting, the role of Heegner points is played by higher-dimensional Heegner cycles in the sense of Nekovář. In particular, we prove that the Pontryagin dual of a certain Bloch-Kat…
We begin a study of m-th Chern classes and m-th characteristic symbols for Iwasawa modules which are supported in codimension at least m. This extends the classical theory of characteristic ideals and their generators for Iwasawa modules which are torsion, i.e., supported in codimension at least 1. We apply this to an Iwasawa module constructed from an inverse limit of p-parts of ideal class groups of abelian extensions of an imaginary quadratic field. When this module is pseudo-null, which is conjecturally always the case, we determine its second Chern class and show that it has a characteris…
The purpose of this paper is to build on results in {\it{higher codimension Iwasawa theory}}. The setting of our results involves Galois representations arising as cyclotomic twist deformations associated to (i) the tensor product of two cuspidal Hida families $F$ and $G$, and (ii) the tensor product of three cuspidal Hida families $F$, $G$ and $H$. On the analytic side, we consider (i) a pair of $3$-variable Rankin-Selberg $p$-adic $L$-functions constructed by Hida and (ii) a balanced $4$-variable $p$-adic $L$-function (due to Hsieh and Yamana) and an unbalanced $4$-variable $p$-adic $L$-func…
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
In this paper, we define a two-variable analogue of Perrin-Riou's p-adic regulator map for the Iwasawa cohomology of a crystalline representation of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, over a Galois extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$ whose Galois group is an abelian p-adic Lie group of dimension 2. We use this regulator map to study p-adic representations of global Galois groups over certain abelian extensions of number fields whose localisation at the primes above p are extensions of the above type. In the example of the restriction to an imaginary quadratic field of the representation atta…
In this article, we study a relation between certain quotients of ideal class groups and the cyclotomic Iwasawa module $X_\infty$ of the Pontrjagin dual of the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We consider the Galois extension field $K^E_n$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ generated by coordinates of all $p^n$-torsion points of $E$, and introduce a quotient $A^E_n$ of the $p$-sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of $K^E_n$ cut out by the modulo $p^n$ Galois representation $E[p^n]$. We describe the asymptotic behavior of $A^E_n$ by using the Iwasawa module $X_\infty$. In p…
In this paper and a forthcoming joint one with Y. Hachimori we study Iwasawa modules over an infinite Galois extension K of a number field k whose Galois group G=G(K/k) is isomorphic to the semidirect product of two copies of the p-adic numbers. After first analyzing some general algebraic properties of the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we apply these results to the Galois group of the p-Hilbert class field over K. As a main tool we prove a Weierstrass preparation theorem for certain skew power series rings. One striking result in our work is the discovery of the abundance of faithful torsion…
