Recently, we have classified Hermitian random matrix ensembles that are invariant under the conjugate action of the unitary group and stable with respect to matrix addition. Apart from a scaling and a shift, the whole information of such an ensemble is encoded in the stability exponent determining the ``heaviness'' of the tail and the spectral measure that describes the anisotropy of the probability distribution. In the present work, we address the question how these ensembles can be generated by the knowledge of the latter two quantities. We consider a sum of a specific construction of identically and independently distributed random matrices that are based on Haar distributed unitary matrices and a stable random vectors. For this construction, we derive the rate of convergence in the supremums norm and show that this rate is optimal in the class of all stable invariant random matrices for a fixed stability exponent. As a consequence we also give the rate of convergence in the total variation distance.
We compute the joint eigenvalue distribution for the rank one Hermitian and non-Hermitian perturbations of chiral Gaussian $β$-ensembles ($β>0$) of random matrices.
For any $β>0$, we provide a tridiagonal matrix model and compute the joint eigenvalue density of a random rank one non-Hermitian perturbation of Gaussian and Laguerre $β$-ensembles of random matrices.
We investigate the eigenvalues statistics of ensembles of normal random matrices when their order N tends to infinite. In the model the eigenvalues have uniform density within a region determined by a simple analytic polynomial curve. We study the conformal deformations of normal random ensembles to Hermitian random ensembles and give sufficient conditions for the latter to be a Wigner ensemble.
Consider an $N\times N$ hermitian random matrix with independent entries, not necessarily Gaussian, a so called Wigner matrix. It has been conjectured that the local spacing distribution, i.e. the distribution of the distance between nearest neighbour eigenvalues in some part of the spectrum is, in the limit as $N\to\infty$, the same as that of hermitian random matrices from GUE. We prove this conjecture for a certain subclass of hermitian Wigner matrices.
Given the Hermitian, symmetric and symplectic ensembles, it is shown that the probability that the spectrum belongs to one or several intervals satisfies a nonlinear PDE. This is done for the three classical ensembles: Gaussian, Laguerre and Jacobi. For the Hermitian ensemble, the PDE (in the boundary points of the intervals) is related to the Toda lattice and the KP equation, whereas for the symmetric and symplectic ensembles the PDE is an inductive equation, related to the so-called Pfaff-KP equation and the Pfaff lattice. The method consists of inserting time-variables in the integral and s…
We compare the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to its non-hermitian counterpart - for the complex Ginibre ensemble. We exploit the mathematical framework based on the generalized Green's functions, which involves a new, hidden complex variable, in comparison to the standard treatment of the resolvents. This new variable turns out to be crucial to understand the pattern of the evolution of non-hermitian systems. The new feature is the emergence of the coupling between the flow of eigenvalues and that of left/right eigenvectors. We analyze local and global equilibria…
In this paper we propose a new method for studying spectral properties of the non-hermitian random matrix ensembles. Alike complex Green's function encodes, via discontinuities, the real spectrum of the hermitian ensembles, the proposed here quaternion extension of the Green's function leads directly to complex spectrum in case of non-hermitian ensembles and encodes additionally some spectral properties of the eigenvectors. The standard two-by-two matrix representation of the quaternions leads to generalization of so-called matrix-valued resolvent, proposed recently in the context of diagramma…
We study several kinds of polynomial ensembles of derivative type which we propose to call Pólya ensembles. These ensembles are defined on the spaces of complex square, complex rectangular, Hermitian, Hermitian anti-symmetric and Hermitian anti-self-dual matrices, and they have nice closure properties under the multiplicative convolution for the first class and under the additive convolution for the other classes. The cases of complex square matrices and Hermitian matrices were already studied in former works. One of our goals is to unify and generalize the ideas to the other classes of matric…
In the present work we show that the joint probability distribution of the eigenvalues can be expressed in terms of a differential operator acting on the distribution of some other matrix quantities. Those quantities might be the diagonal or pseudo-diagonal entries as it is the case for Hermitian matrices. These representations are called derivative principles. We show them for the additive spaces of the Hermitian, Hermitian antisymmetric, Hermitian anti-self-dual, and complex rectangular matrices as well as for the two multiplicative matrix spaces of the positive definite Hermitian matrices a…
A family of random matrix ensembles interpolating between the GUE and the Ginibre ensemble of $n\times n$ matrices with iid centered complex Gaussian entries is considered. The asymptotic spectral distribution in these models is uniform in an ellipse in the complex plane, which collapses to an interval of the real line as the degree of non-Hermiticity diminishes. Scaling limit theorems are proven for the eigenvalue point process at the rightmost edge of the spectrum, and it is shown that a non-trivial transition occurs between Poisson and Airy point process statistics when the ratio of the axe…
We consider large non-Hermitian real or complex random matrices $X$ with independent, identically distributed centred entries. We prove that their local eigenvalue statistics near the spectral edge, the unit circle, coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble, i.e. when the matrix elements of $X$ are Gaussian. This result is the non-Hermitian counterpart of the universality of the Tracy-Widom distribution at the spectral edges of the Wigner ensemble.
We consider a family of chiral non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices in the unitarily invariant symmetry class. The eigenvalue distribution in this model is expressed in terms of Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane. These are orthogonal with respect to a non-Gaussian weight including a modified Bessel function of the second kind, and we give an elementary proof for this. In the large $n$ limit, the eigenvalue statistics at the spectral edge close to the real axis are described by the same family of kernels interpolating between Airy and Poisson that was recently found by one of the auth…
It is known that the so-called Bercovici-Pata bijection can be explained in terms of certain Hermitian random matrix ensembles $(M_{d})_{d\geq1}$ whose asymptotic spectral distributions are free infinitely divisible. We investigate Hermitian Lévy processes with jumps of rank one associated to these random matrix ensembles introduced in [6] and [10]. A sample path approximation by covariation processes for these matrix Lévy processes is obtained. As a general result we prove that any $d\times d$ complex matrix subordinator with jumps of rank one is the quadratic variation of an $\mathbb{C}^{d}$…
The goal of this article is to study how much the eigenvalues of large Hermitian random matrices deviate from certain deterministic locations -- or in other words, to investigate optimal rigidity estimates for the eigenvalues. We do this in the setting of one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles of random Hermitian matrices -- the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble being the prime example of such an ensemble. Our approach to this question combines extreme value theory of log-correlated stochastic processes, and in particular the theory of multiplicative chaos, with asymptotic analysis of large Hanke…
A polynomial ensemble is a probability density function for the position of $n$ real particles of the form $\frac{1}{Z_n} \, \prod_{j<k} (x_k-x_j) \, \det \left[ f_k (x_j) \right]_{j,k=1}^n$, for certain functions $f_1, \ldots, f_n$. Such ensembles appear frequently as the joint eigenvalue density of random matrices. We present a number of transformations that preserve the structure of a polynomial ensemble. These transformations include the restriction of a Hermitian matrix by removing one row and one column, a rank-one modification of a Hermitian matrix, and the extension of a Hermitian matr…
We prove that when suitably normalized, small enough powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian matrices, drawn from one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles, converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures. We prove this in the so-called $L^2$-phase of multiplicative chaos. Our main tools are asymptotics of Hankel determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. Using Riemann-Hilbert methods, we prove a rather general Fisher-Hartwig formula for one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles.
We prove multi-dimensional central limit theorems for the spectral moments (of arbitrary degrees) associated with random matrices with real-valued i.i.d. entries, satisfying some appropriate moment conditions. Our techniques rely on a universality principle for the Gaussian Wiener chaos, recently proved by the authors together with Gesine Reinert, as well as on some combinatorial estimates. Unlike other related results in the probabilistic literature, we do not require that the law of the entries has a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure. In particular, our results apply to the ensemb…
Recently subclasses of polynomial ensembles for additive and multiplicative matrix convolutions were identified which were called Pólya ensembles (or polynomial ensembles of derivative type). Those ensembles are closed under the respective convolutions and, thus, build a semi-group when adding by hand a unit element. They even have a semi-group action on the polynomial ensembles. Moreover in several works transformations of the bi-orthogonal functions and kernels of a given polynomial ensemble were derived when performing an additive or multiplicative matrix convolution with particular Pólya e…
We prove that, for general test functions, the limiting behavior of the linear statistic of an independent entry random matrix is determined only by the first four moments of the entry distributions. This immediately generalizes the known central limit theorem for independent entry matrices with complex normal entries. We also establish two central limit theorems for matrices with real normal entries, considering separately functions supported exclusively on and exclusively away from the real line. In contrast to previously obtained results in this area, we do not impose analyticity on test fu…
We present an approach to sums of random Hermitian matrices via the theory of spherical functions for the Gelfand pair $(\mathrm{U}(n) \ltimes \mathrm{Herm}(n), \mathrm{U}(n))$. It is inspired by a similar approach of Kieburg and Kösters for products of random matrices. The spherical functions have determinantal expressions because of the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber integral formula. It leads to remarkably simple expressions for the spherical transform and its inverse. The spherical transform is applied to sums of unitarily invariant random matrices from polynomial ensembles and the subclass…
Koloğlu, Kopp and Miller compute the limiting spectral distribution of a certain class of real random matrix ensembles, known as $k$-block circulant ensembles, and discover that it is exactly equal to the eigenvalue distribution of an $k \times k$ Gaussian unitary ensemble. We give a simpler proof that under very general conditions which subsume the cases studied by Koloğlu-Kopp-Miller, real-symmetric ensembles with periodic diagonals always have limiting spectral distribution equal to the eigenvalue distribution of a finite Hermitian ensemble with Gaussian entries which is a `complex version'…
Consider an ensemble of $N\times N$ non-Hermitian matrices in which all entries are independent identically distributed complex random variables of mean zero and absolute mean-square one. If the entry distributions also possess bounded densities and finite $(4+ε)$ moments, then Z. D. Bai [Ann. Probab. 25 (1997) 494--529] has shown the ensemble to satisfy the circular law: after scaling by a factor of $1/\sqrt{N}$ and letting $N\to \infty$, the empirical measure of the eigenvalues converges weakly to the uniform measure on the unit disk in the complex plane. In this note, we investigate fluctua…
We consider ensembles of $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. Assuming sufficient regularity for the probability density function of the entries, we show that the expectation of the density of states on {\it arbitrarily} small intervals converges to the semicircle law, as $N$ tends to infinity.
By using the independence structure of points following a determinantal point process, we study the radii of the spherical ensemble, the truncation of the circular unitary ensemble and the product ensemble with parameter n and k. The limiting distributions of the three radii are obtained. They are not the Tracy-Widom distribution. In particular, for the product ensemble, we show that the limiting distribution has a transition phenomenon: when k/n -> 0, k/n -> a in (0,infty) and k/n -> infty, the liming distribution is the Gumbel distribution, a new distribution $μ$ and the logarithmic normal d…
We consider the asymptotics of the second-order correlation function of the characteristic polynomial of a random matrix. We show that the known result for a random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble essentially continues to hold for a general Hermitian Wigner matrix. Our proofs rely on an explicit formula for the exponential generating function of the second-order correlation function of the characteristic polynomial.
We describe Generalized Hermitian matrices ensemble sometimes called Chiral ensemble. We give global asymptotic of the density of eigenvalues or the statistical density. We will calculate a Laplace transform of such a density for finite $n$, which will be expressed through an hypergeometric function. When the dimensional of the hermitian matrix begin large enough, we will prove that the statistical density of eigenvalues converge in the tight topology to some probability measure, which generalize the Wigner semi-circle law.
The present paper studies a Gaussian Hermitian random matrix ensemble with external source, given by a fixed diagonal matrix with two eigenvalues a and -a. As a first result, the probability that the eigenvalues of the ensemble belong to a set satisfies a fourth order PDE with quartic non-linearity; the variables being the eigenvalue a and the boundary points of the set. This equation enables one to find a PDE for the Pearcey distribution. The latter describes the statistics of the eigenvalues near the closure of a gap; i.e., when the support of the equilibrium measure for large size random ma…
Very recently, we have shown how the harmonic analysis approach can be modified to deal with products of general Hermitian and complex random matrices at finite matrix dimension. In the present work, we consider the particular product of a multiplicative Pólya ensemble on the complex square matrices and a Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) shifted by a constant multiplicative of the identity. The shift shall show that the limiting hard edge statistics of the product matrix is weakly dependent on the local spectral statistics of the GUE, but depends more on the global statistics via its Stieltjes …
We describe an elementary method to get non-asymptotic estimates for the moments of Hermitian random matrices whose elements are Gaussian independent random variables. As the basic example, we consider the GUE matrices. Immediate applications include GOE and the ensemble of Gaussian anti-symmetric Hermitian matrices. The estimates we derive give asymptotically exact expressions for the first terms of 1/N-expansions of the moments and covariance terms. We apply our method to the ensemble of Gaussian Hermitian random band matrices whose elements are zero outside of the band of width b. The estim…
We study the eigenvalue correlations of random Hermitian $n\times n$ matrices of the form $S=M+εH$, where $H$ is a GUE matrix, $ε>0$, and $M$ is a positive-definite Hermitian random matrix, independent of $H$, whose eigenvalue density is a polynomial ensemble. We show that there is a soft-to-hard edge transition in the microscopic behaviour of the eigenvalues of $S$ close to $0$ if $ε$ tends to $0$ together with $n\to +\infty$ at a critical speed, depending on the random matrix $M$. In a double scaling limit, we obtain a new family of limiting eigenvalue correlation kernels. We apply our gener…
In the paper [25], written in collaboration with Gesine Reinert, we proved a universality principle for the Gaussian Wiener chaos. In the present work, we aim at providing an original example of application of this principle in the framework of random matrix theory. More specifically, by combining the result in [25] with some combinatorial estimates, we are able to prove multi-dimensional central limit theorems for the spectral moments (of arbitrary degrees) associated with random matrices with real-valued i.i.d. entries, satisfying some appropriate moment conditions. Our approach has the adva…
Using large $N$ arguments, we propose a scheme for calculating the two-point eigenvector correlation function for non-normal random matrices in the large $N$ limit. The setting generalizes the quaternionic extension of free probability to two-point functions. In the particular case of biunitarily invariant random matrices, we obtain a simple, general expression for the two-point eigenvector correlation function, which can be viewed as a further generalization of the single ring theorem. This construction has some striking similarities to the freeness of the second kind known for the Hermitian …
Products and sums of random matrices have seen a rapid development in the past decade due to various analytical techniques available. Two of these are the harmonic analysis approach and the concept of polynomial ensembles. Very recently, it has been shown for products of real matrices with anti-symmetric matrices of even dimension that the traditional harmonic analysis on matrix groups developed by Harish-Chandra et al. needs to be modified when considering the group action on general symmetric spaces of matrices. In the present work, we consider the product of complex random matrices with Her…

We consider the non-Hermitian analogue of the celebrated Wigner-Dyson-Mehta bulk universality phenomenon, i.e. that in the bulk the local eigenvalue statistics of a large random matrix with independent, identically distributed centred entries are universal, in particular they asymptotically coincide with those of the Ginibre ensemble in the corresponding symmetry class. In this paper we reduce this problem to understanding a certain microscopic regime for the Hermitized resolvent in Girko's formula by showing that all other regimes are negligible.
We investigate $β$-Generalized random Hermitian matrices ensemble sometimes called Chiral ensemble. We give global asymptotic of the density of eigenvalues or the statistical density. We investigate general method names as equilibrium measure method. When taking $n$ large limit we will see that the asymptotic density of eigenvalues generalize the Wigner semi-circle law.

Considering a determinantal point process on the real line, we establish a connection between the sine-kernel asymptotics for the correlation kernel and the CLT for mesoscopic linear statistics. This implies universality of mesoscopic fluctuations for a large class of unitary invariant Hermitian ensembles. In particular, this shows that the support of the equilibrium measure need not be connected in order to see Gaussian fluctuations at mesoscopic scales. Our proof is based on the cumulants computations introduced in [48] for the CUE and the sine process and the asymptotics formulae derived by…
We present the exact analytical expression for the spectrum of a sparse non-Hermitian random matrix ensemble, generalizing two classical results in random-matrix theory: this analytical expression forms a non-Hermitian version of the Kesten-Mckay law as well as a sparse realization of Girko's elliptic law. Our exact result opens new perspectives in the study of several physical problems modelled on sparse random graphs. In this context, we show analytically that the convergence rate of a transport process on a very sparse graph depends upon the degree of symmetry of the edges in a non-monotono…
We investigate the spectral statistics of Hermitian matrices in which the elements are chosen uniformly from U (1), called the uni-modular ensemble (UME), in the limit of large matrix size. Using three complimentary methods; a supersymmetric integration method, a combinatorial graph-theoretical analysis and a Brownian motion approach, we are able to derive expressions for 1/N corrections to the mean spectral moments and also analyse the fluctuations about this mean. By addressing the same ensemble from three different point of view, we can critically compare their relative advantages and deriv…
In this paper, we survey some recent progress on rigorously establishing the universality of various spectral statistics of Wigner Hermitian random matrix ensembles, focusing on the Four Moment Theorem and its refinements and applications, including the universality of the sine kernel and the Central limit theorem of several spectral parameters. We also take the opportunity here to issue some errata for some of our previous papers in this area.
We study the Brown measure of certain non-hermitian operators arising from Voiculescu's free probability theory. Usually those operators appear as the limit in *-moments of certain ensembles of non-hermitian random matrices, and the Brown measure gives then a canonical candidate for the limit eigenvalue distribution of the random matrices. A prominent class for our operators is given by polynomials in *-free variables. Other explicit examples include R-diagonal elements and elliptic elements, for which the Brown measure was already known, and a new class of triangular-elliptic elements. Our me…
