We consider all totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEPs) whose transition probabilities are given in the Schütz-type formulas and which jump with homogeneous rates. We show that the multi-point distribution of particle positions and the coefficient of KPZ scaling are described using the probability generating function of the distribution followed when the rightmost particle jumps. For all TASEPs satisfying certain assumptions, We also prove the pointwise convergence of the kernels appearing in the joint distribution of particle positions to those appearing in the KPZ fixed point formula. Our result generalizes the result of Matetski, Quastel, and Remenik [Acta Math., 227, 115-203, (2021)].
We consider two versions of discrete time totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEPs) with geometric and Bernoulli random hopping probabilities. For the process mixed with these and continuous time dynamics, we obtain a single Fredholm determinant representation for the joint distribution function of particle positions with arbitrary initial data. This formula is a generalization of the recent result by Mateski, Quastel and Remenik and allows us to take the KPZ scaling limit. For both the discrete time geometric and Bernoulli TASEPs, we show that the distribution function converges …
For stationary KPZ growth in 1+1 dimensions the height fluctuations are governed by the Baik-Rains distribution. Using the totally asymmetric single step growth model, alias TASEP, we investigate height fluctuations for a general class of spatially homogeneous random initial conditions. We prove that for TASEP there is a one-parameter family of limit distributions, labeled by the diffusion coefficient of the initial conditions. The distributions are defined through a variational formula. We use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain their numerical plots. Also discussed is the connection to the six…
Interacting particle systems in the KPZ universality class on a ring of size $L$ with $O(L)$ number of particles are expected to change from KPZ dynamics to equilibrium dynamics at the so-called relaxation time scale $t=O(L^{3/2})$. In particular the system size is expected to have little effect to the particle fluctuations in the sub-relaxation time scale $t\ll L^{3/2}$. We prove that this is indeed the case for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with two types of initial conditions. For flat initial condition, we show that the particle fluctuations are given by the Airy$…
We study the model of the totally asymmetric exclusion process with generalized update, which compared to the usual totally asymmetric exclusion process, has an additional parameter enhancing clustering of particles. We derive the exact multiparticle distributions of distances travelled by particles on the infinite lattice for two types of initial conditions: step and alternating once. Two different scaling limits of the exact formulas are studied. Under the first scaling associated to Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class we prove convergence of joint distributions of the scaled partic…
An explicit Fredholm determinant formula is derived for the multipoint distribution of the height function of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with arbitrary right-finite initial condition. The method is by solving the biorthogonal ensemble/non-intersecting path representation found by [Sas05; BFPS07]. The resulting kernel involves transition probabilities of a random walk forced to hit a curve defined by the initial data. In the KPZ 1:2:3 scaling limit the formula leads in a transparent way to a Fredholm determinant formula, in terms of analogous kernels based on Browni…
The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) fixed point is a Markov process, recently introduced by Matetski, Quastel, Remenik (arXiv:1701.00018), that describes the limit fluctuations of the height function associated to the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP), and it is conjectured to be at the centre of the KPZ universality class. Our main result is that the KPZ incremental process converges weakly to its invariant measure, given by a two-sided Brownian motion with zero drift and diffusion coefficient 2. The heart of the proof is the coupling method that allows us to compare the TASEP hei…
The height fluctuations of the models in the KPZ class are expected to converge to a universal process. The spatial process at equal time is known to converge to the Airy process or its variations. However, the temporal process, or more generally the two-dimensional space-time fluctuation field, is less well understood. We consider this question for the periodic TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process). For a particular initial condition, we evaluate the multi-time and multi-location distribution explicitly in terms of a multiple integral involving a Fredholm determinant. We then ev…
We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring with flat and step initial conditions. We assume that the size of the ring and the number of particles tend to infinity proportionally and evaluate the fluctuations of tagged particles and currents. The crossover from the KPZ dynamics to the equilibrium dynamics occurs when the time is proportional to the 3/2 power of the ring size. We compute the limiting distributions in this relaxation time scale. The analysis is based on an explicit formula of the finite-time one-point distribution obtained from the coordinate Bethe ansa…
We consider the $q$-totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) in the stationary regime and study the fluctuation of the position of a particle. We first observe that the problem can be studied as a limiting case of an $N$-particle $q$-TASEP with a random initial condition and with particle dependent hopping rate. Then we explain how this $N$-particle $q$-TASEP can be encoded in a dynamics on a two-sided Gelfand-Tsetlin cone described by a two-sided $q$-Whittaker process and present a Fredholm determinant formula for the $q$-Laplace transform of the position of a particle. Two mai…
We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with \emph{soft-shock} initial particle density, which is a step function increasing in the direction of flow and the step size chosen small to admit KPZ scaling. The initial configuration is deterministic and the dynamics create a shock. We prove that the fluctuations of a particle at the macroscopic position of the shock converge to the maximum of two independent GOE Tracy-Widom random variables, which establishes a conjecture of Ferrari and Nejjar. Furthermore, we show the joint fluctuations of particles near the shock are determin…
We consider the q-Hahn TASEP which is a three-parameter family of discrete time interacting particle systems. The particles jump to the right independently according to a certain q-Binomial distribution with parallel updates. It is a generalization of the discrete time q-TASEP which is the q-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on Z for q in [0,1). For step initial condition, we prove that the current fluctuation of q-Hahn TASEP at time t is of order $t^{1/3}$ and asymptotically distributed as the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We verify the KPZ scaling theory conjecture…
We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with two different initial conditions with shock discontinuities formed by blocks of fully packed particles. Initially a second class particle is at the left of a shock discontinuity. Using multicolored TASEP we derive exact formulas for the distribution of the second class particle and colored height functions. These are given in terms of the height function at different positions of a single TASEP configuration. We study the limiting distributions of second class particles (and colored height functions). The result depends o…
We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, a model in the KPZ universality class. We focus on the fluctuations of particle positions starting with certain deterministic initial conditions. For large time t, one has regions with constant and linearly decreasing density. The fluctuations on these two regions are given by the Airy_1 and Airy_2 processes, whose one-point distributions are the GOE and GUE Tracy-Widom distributions of random matrix theory. In this paper we analyze the transition region between these two regimes and obtain the transition process. Its one-point distr…
Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ is one of the classical exactly solvable models in the KPZ universality class. We study the "slow bond" model, where TASEP on $\mathbb{Z}$ is imputed with a slow bond at the origin. The slow bond increases the particle density immediately to its left and decreases the particle density immediately to its right. Whether or not this effect is detectable in the macroscopic current started from the step initial condition has attracted much interest over the years and this question was settled recently (Basu, Sidoravicius, Sly (2014…
These notes are based on lectures delivered by the authors at a Langeoog seminar of SFB/TR12 "Symmetries and universality in mesoscopic systems" to a mixed audience of mathematicians and theoretical physicists. After a brief outline of the basic physical concepts of equilibrium and nonequilibrium states, the one-dimensional simple exclusion process is introduced as a paradigmatic nonequilibrium interacting particle system. The stationary measure on the ring is derived and the idea of the hydrodynamic limit is sketched. We then introduce the phenomenological Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation a…
We consider TASEP with two types of particles starting at every second site. Particles to the left of the origin have jump rate $1$, while particles to the right have jump rate $α$. When $α<1$ there is a formation of a shock where the density jumps to $(1-α)/2$. For $α<1$ fixed, the statistics of the associated height functions around the shock is asymptotically (as time $t\to\infty$) a maximum of two independent random variables as shown in\cite{FN14}. In this paper we consider the critical scaling when $1-α=a t^{-1/3}$, where $t\gg 1$ is the observation time. In that case the decoupling does…
We study the semi-discrete directed polymer model introduced by O'Connell-Yor in its stationary regime, based on our previous work on the stationary $q$-totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) using a two-sided $q$-Whittaker process. We give a formula for the free energy distribution of the polymer model in terms of Fredholm determinant and show that the universal KPZ stationary distribution appears in the long time limit. We also consider the limit to the stationary KPZ equation and discuss the connections with previously found formulas.
We study the aging property for stationary models in the KPZ universality class. In particular, we show aging for the stationary KPZ fixed point, the Cole-Hopf solution to the stationary KPZ equation, the height function of the stationary TASEP, last-passage percolation with boundary conditions and stationary directed polymers in the intermediate disorder regime. All of these models are shown to display a universal aging behavior characterized by the rate of decay of their correlations. As a comparison, we show aging for models in the Edwards-Wilkinson universality class where a different deca…
One of the main difficulties in proving convergence of discrete models of surface growth to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in dimensions higher than one is that the correct way to take a scaling limit, so that the limit is nontrivial, is not known in a rigorous sense. To understand KPZ growth without being hindered by this issue, this article introduces a notion of "local KPZ behavior", which roughly means that the instantaneous growth of the surface at a point decomposes into the sum of a Laplacian term, a gradient squared term, a noise term that behaves like white noise, and a remain…
We consider the family of two-sided Bernoulli initial conditions for TASEP which, as the left and right densities ($ρ_-,ρ_+$) are varied, give rise to shock waves and rarefaction fans---the two phenomena which are typical to TASEP. We provide a proof of Conjecture 7.1 of [Progr. Probab. 51 (2002) 185--204] which characterizes the order of and scaling functions for the fluctuations of the height function of two-sided TASEP in terms of the two densities $ρ_-,ρ_+$ and the speed $y$ around which the height is observed. In proving this theorem for TASEP, we also prove a fluctuation theorem for a cl…
The relaxation time limit of the one-point distribution of the spatially periodic totally asymmetric simple exclusion process is expected to be the universal one point distribution for the models in the KPZ universality class in a periodic domain. Unlike the infinite line case, the limiting one point distribution depends non-trivially on the scaled time parameter. We study several properties of this distribution for the case of the periodic step and flat initial conditions. We show that the distribution changes from a Tracy-Widom distribution in the small time limit to the Gaussian distributio…
The KPZ fixed point is a scaling invariant Markov process which arises as the universal scaling limit of a broad class of models of random interface growth in one dimension, the one-dimensional KPZ universality class. In this survey we review the construction of the KPZ fixed point and some of the history that led to it, in particular through the exact solution of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, a special solvable model in the class. We also explain how the construction reveals the KPZ fixed point as a stochastic integrable system, and how from this it follows that its finite …
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the KPZ fixed point $\{\mathsf H(x,t)\}_{x\in\mathbb R, t>0}$ conditioned on $\mathsf H(0,T)=L$ as $L$ goes to infinity. The main result is a conditional limit theorem for the fluctuations of $\mathsf H$ in the region near the line segment connecting the origin $(0,0)$ and $(0,T)$ for both step and flat initial conditions. The limit random field can be represented as a functional of two independent Brownian bridges, and in addition the limit random field depends also on the initial law of the KPZ fixed point. In particular for temporal fluctuations, the l…
We consider the system of one-sided reflected Brownian motions which is in variational duality with Brownian last passage percolation. We show that it has integrable transition probabilities, expressed in terms of Hermite polynomials and hitting times of exponential random walks, and that it converges in the 1:2:3 scaling limit to the KPZ fixed point, the scaling invariant Markov process defined in [MQR17] and believed to govern the long time large scale fluctuations for all models in the KPZ universality class. Brownian last passage percolation was shown recently in [DOV18] to converge to the…
The directed landscape constructed in (Dauvergne-Ortmann-Virag '18) produces a directed, planar, random geometry, and is believed to be the universal scaling limit of two-dimensional first and last passage percolation models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Geodesics in this random geometry form an important class of random continuous curves exhibiting fluctuation theory quite different from that of Brownian motion. In this vein, counterpart to Brownian local time, BLT (a self-similar measure supported on the set of zeros of Brownian motion), a local time for geodesics, GLT…
We introduce a new interacting particle system on $\mathbb{Z}$, \emph{slowed $t$-TASEP}. It may be viewed as a $q$-TASEP with additional position-dependent slowing of jump rates depending on a parameter $t$, which leads to discrete and nonuniversal asymptotics at large time. If on the other hand $t \to 1$ as $\text{time} \to \infty$, we prove (1) a law of large numbers for particle positions, (2) a central limit theorem, with convergence to the fixed-time Gaussian marginal of a stationary solution to SDEs derived from the particle jump rates, and (3) a bulk limit to a certain explicit stationa…
We consider the stochastic heat equation $\partial_tZ= \partial_x^2 Z - Z \dot W$ on the real line, where $\dot W$ is space-time white noise. $h(t,x)=-\log Z(t,x)$ is interpreted as a solution of the KPZ equation, and $u(t,x)=\partial_x h(t,x)$ as a solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We take $Z(0,x)=\exp\{B(x)\}$ where $B(x)$ is a two-sided Brownian motion, corresponding to the stationary solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We show that there exist $0< c_1\le c_2 <\infty$ such that $c_1t^{2/3}\le \Var (\log Z(t,x))\le c_2 t^{2/3}.$ Analogous results are obtained for some mom…
We consider the joint distributions of particle positions for the continuous time totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP). They are expressed as Fredholm determinants with a kernel defining a signed determinantal point process. We then consider certain periodic initial conditions and determine the kernel in the scaling limit. This result has been announced first in a letter by one of us and here we provide a self-contained derivation. Connections to last passage directed percolation and random matrices are also briefly discussed.
There has been much success in describing the limiting spatial fluctuations of growth models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. A proper rescaling of time should introduce a non-trivial temporal dimension to these limiting fluctuations. In one-dimension, the KPZ class has the dynamical scaling exponent $z=3/2$, that means one should find a universal space-time limiting process under the scaling of time as $t\,T$, space like $t^{2/3} X$ and fluctuations like $t^{1/3}$ as $t\to\infty$. In this paper we provide evidence for this belief. We prove that under certain hypotheses, gr…
We prove that under a particular weak scaling, the 4-parameter interacting particle system introduced by Corwin and Petrov converges to the KPZ equation. This expands the relatively small number of systems for which weak universality of the KPZ equation has been demonstrated.
We consider the polynuclear growth (PNG) model in 1+1 dimension with flat initial condition and no extra constraints. The joint distributions of surface height at finitely many points at a fixed time moment are given as marginals of a signed determinantal point process. The long time scaling limit of the surface height is shown to coincide with the Airy_1 process. This result holds more generally for the observation points located along any space-like path in the space-time plane. We also obtain the corresponding results for the discrete time TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process)…
We consider an interacting particles system composed of a Hamiltonian part and perturbed by a conservative stochastic noise so that the full system conserves two quantities: energy and volume. The Hamiltonian part is regulated by a scaling parameter vanishing in the limit. We study the form of the fluctuations of these quantities at equilibrium and derive coupled stochastic partial differential equations with a KPZ flavor.
The $(d+1)$-dimensional KPZ equation is the canonical model for the growth of rough $d$-dimensional random surfaces. A deep mathematical understanding of the KPZ equation for $d=1$ has been achieved in recent years, and the case $d\ge 3$ has also seen some progress. The most physically relevant case of $d=2$, however, is not very well-understood mathematically, largely due to the renormalization that is required: in the language of renormalization group analysis, the $d=2$ case is neither ultraviolet superrenormalizable like the $d=1$ case nor infrared superrenormalizable like the $d\ge 3$ cas…
We study the asymptotic behavior of a class of stochastic dynamics on interlacing particle configurations (also known as Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns). Examples of such dynamics include, in particular, a multi-layer extension of TASEP and particle dynamics related to the shuffling algorithm for domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. We prove that the process of reflected interlacing Brownian motions introduced by Warren in \cite{W} serves as a universal scaling limit for such dynamics.
Motivated by the recent exact solution of the {\it stationary-state} Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) statistics by Imamura & Sasamoto (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 190603 (2012)), as well as a precursor experimental signature unearthed by Takeuchi (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 210604 (2013)), we establish here the universality of these phenomena, examining scaling behaviors of directed polymers in a random medium, the stochastic heat equation with multiplicative noise, and kinetically roughened KPZ growth models. We emphasize the value of cross KPZ-Class universalities, revealing crossover effects of …
Consider a deterministically growing surface of any dimension, where the growth at a point is an arbitrary nonlinear function of the heights at that point and its neighboring points. Assuming that this nonlinear function is monotone, invariant under the symmetries of the lattice, equivariant under constant shifts, and twice continuously differentiable, it is shown that any such growing surface approaches a solution of the deterministic KPZ equation in a suitable space-time scaling limit.
We investigate a rich new class of exactly solvable particle systems generalizing the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP). Our particle systems can be thought of as new exactly solvable examples of tandem queues, directed first- or last-passage percolation models, or Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type systems with random input. One of the novel features of the particle systems is the presence of spatial inhomogeneity which can lead to the formation of traffic jams. For systems with special step-like initial data, we find explicit limit shapes, describe hydrodynamic evolution, and ob…
In this paper we study the KPZ line ensembles under the KPZ scaling. Based on their Gibbs property, we derive quantitative local fluctuation estimates for the scaled KPZ line ensembles. This allows us to show that the family of scaled KPZ line ensembles is tight. Together with the recent progress in [QS20], [Vir], and [DM], the tightness result yields the conjectural convergence of the scaled KPZ line ensembles to the Airy line ensemble.
