The $G$-representation variety $R_G(Σ_g)$ parametrizes the representations of the fundamental groups of surfaces $π_1(Σ_g)$ into an algebraic group $G$. Taking $G$ to be the groups of $n \times n$ upper triangular or unipotent matrices, we compare two methods for computing algebraic invariants of $R_G(Σ_G)$. Using the geometric method initiated by González-Prieto, Logares and Muñoz, based on a Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT), we compute the virtual classes of $R_G(Σ_g)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties for $n = 1, \ldots, 5$. Introducing the notion of algebraic representatives we are able to efficiently compute the TQFT. Using the arithmetic method initiated by Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas, we compute the $E$-polynomials of $R_G(Σ_g)$ for $n = 1, \ldots, 10$. For both methods, we describe how the computations can be performed algorithmically. Furthermore, we discuss the relation between the representation varieties of the group of unipotent matrices and Higman's conjecture. The computations of this paper can be seen as positive evidence towards a generalized motivic version of the conjecture.
We derive some combinatorial consequences from the positivity of Donaldson-Thomas invariants for symmetric quivers conjectured by Kontsevich and Soibelman and proved recently by Efimov. These results are used to prove the Kac conjecture for quivers having at least one loop at every vertex.
A conjecture by Higman asserts that the number of conjugacy classes in the unipotent group of upper triangular matrices over a finite field depends polynomially on the number of elements of the field. We will study several alternative counting problems arising from quiver representations and prove explicit formulas relating the corresponding invariants to the invariants of Higman's conjecture. To do this, we develop a general framework of linear stacks over small etale sites and study volumes of these stacks and of their substacks of absolutely indecomposable objects.
We develop the Denef-Loeser motivic integration to the equivariant motivic integration and use it to prove the full integral identity conjecture for regular functions.
Using iterated vanishing cycles and convolution, we prove a motivic version of a conjecture of Steenbrink concerning the spectrum of hypersurface singularities
This is meant to be a survey article for the Cubo Journal. We discuss the existence and number of rational points over a finite field, the Hodge type over the complex numbers, and the motivic conjectures which are controlling those invariants. We present a geometric version of it.
In this paper we prove the 2-local part of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjectures on tosion in motivic cohomology. In particular we prove the Milnor conjecture relating Milnor's K-theory and the Galois cohomology with Z/2-coefficients. This paper is a new version of the previously distributed preprint "The Milnor Conjecture".
We present a new tool for the calculation of Denef and Loeser's motivic nearby fiber and motivic Milnor fiber: a motivic Fubini theorem for the tropicalization map, based on Hrushovski and Kazhdan's theory of motivic volumes of semi-algebraic sets. As applications, we prove a conjecture of Davison and Meinhardt on motivic nearby fibers of weighted homogeneous polynomials, and give a very short and conceptual new proof of the integral identity conjecture of Kontsevich and Soibelman, first proved by Lê Quy Thuong. Both of these conjectures emerged in the context of motivic Donaldson-Thomas theor…
Let $G\subset SL_2(C)\subset SL_3(C)$ be a finite group. We compute motivic Pandharipande-Thomas and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the crepant resolution $Hilb^G(C^3)$ of $C^3/G$ generalizing results of Gholampour and Jiang who computed numerical DT/PT invariants using localization techniques. Our formulas rely on the computation of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for a special class of quivers with potentials. We show that these motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants are closely related to the polynomials counting absolutely indecomposable quiver representations over finite fields introduce…
We prove that a conjecture of Chai on the additivity of the base change conductor for semi-abelian varieties over a discretely valued field is equivalent to a Fubini property for the dimensions of certain motivic integrals. We prove this Fubini property when the valued field has characteristic zero.
This paper concerns the Algebraic Sato--Tate and Sato--Tate conjectures, based on Serre's original motivic formulation, with an eye towards explicit computations of Sato--Tate groups. We build on the algebraic framework for the Sato--Tate conjecture introduced in a previous paper, which used Deligne's motivic category for absolute Hodge cycles and was restricted to motives of odd weight. Here, we allow general weight and some other motivic categories, notably André's motivic category of motivated cycles; moreover, some results are also new in the odd weight case. The paper consists of two part…
For an arithmetical scheme X, K. Kato introduced a certain complex of Gersten-Bloch-Ogus type whose component in degree a involves Galois cohomology groups of the residue fields of all the points of X of dimension a. He stated a conjecture on its homology generalizing the fundamental exact sequences for Brauer groups of global fields. We prove the conjecture over a finite field assuming resolution of singularities. Thanks to a recently established result on resolution of singularities for embedded surfaces, it implies the unconditional vanishing of the homology up to degree 4 for X projective …
The Tate conjecture for squares of K3 surfaces over finite fields was recently proved by Ito-Ito-Koshikawa. We give a more geometric proof when the characteristic is at least 5. The main idea is to use twisted derived equivalences between K3 surfaces to link the Tate conjecture to finiteness results over finite fields, in the spirit of Tate.
We initiate a study of path spaces in the nascent context of "motivic dga's", under development in doctoral work by Gabriella Guzman. This enables us to reconstruct the unipotent fundamental group of a pointed scheme from the associated augmented motivic dga, and provides us with a factorization of Kim's relative unipotent section conjecture into several smaller conjectures with a homotopical flavor. Based on a conversation with Joseph Ayoub, we prove that the path spaces of the punctured projective line over a number field are concentrated in degree zero with respect to Levine's t-structure f…
Since its first use by Behrend, Bryan, and Szendrői in the computation of motivic Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants of $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^3$, dimensional reduction has proved to be an important tool in motivic and cohomological DT theory. Inspired by a conjecture of Cazzaniga, Morrison, Pym, and Szendrői on motivic DT invariants, work of Dobrovolska, Ginzburg, and Travkin on exponential sums, and work of Orlov and Hirano on equivalences of categories of singularities, we generalize the dimensional reduction theorem in motivic and cohomological DT theory and use it to prove versions of the…
Beginning with the conjecture of Artin and Tate in 1966, there has been a series of successively more general conjectures expressing the special values of the zeta function of an algebraic variety over a finite field in terms of other invariants of the variety. In this article, we present the ultimate such conjecture, and provide evidence for it. In particular, we enhance Voevodsky's Z[1/p]-category of etale motivic complexes with a p-integral structure, and show that, for this category, our conjecture follows from the Tate and Beilinson conjectures. As the conjecture is stated in terms of mot…
Consider the neutral Tannakian category mixed Tate motives over Z, in this paper we suggest a way to understand the structure of depth-graded motivic Lie subalgebra generated by the depth one part. We will show that from an isomorphism conjecture proposed by K. Tasaka we can deduce the F. Brown matrix conjecture and the non-degenerated conjecture about depth-graded motivic Lie subalgebra generated by the depth one part.
We show that Grothendieck's standard conjectures are implied by either of two other motivic conjectures: (a) by that of the existence of the motivic t-structure, and (b) by (a weak form of) Suslin's Lawson homology conjecture.
We make explicit Serre's generalization of the Sato-Tate conjecture for motives, by expressing the construction in terms of fiber functors from the motivic category of absolute Hodge cycles into a suitable category of Hodge structures of odd weight. This extends the case of abelian varietes, which we treated in a previous paper. That description was used by Fite--Kedlaya--Rotger--Sutherland to classify Sato-Tate groups of abelian surfaces; the present description is used by Fite--Kedlaya--Sutherland to make a similar classification for certain motives of weight 3. We also give conditions under…
We prove for abelian varieties a global form of Denef and Loeser's motivic monodromy conjecture, in arbitrary characteristic. More precisely, we prove that for every tamely ramified abelian variety $A$ over a complete discretely valued field, its motivic zeta function has a unique pole at Chai's base change conductor $c(A)$ of $A$, and that the order of this pole equals one plus the potential toric rank of $A$. Moreover, we show that for every embedding of $\Q_\ell$ in $\C$, the value $\exp(2πi c(A))$ is an $\ell$-adic tame monodromy eigenvalue of $A$. The main tool in the paper is Edixhoven's…
In this paper we give a proof of the Bloch-Kato conjecture relating motivic cohomology and etale cohomology. It is a corrected version of the paper with the same title which posted earlier.
This note concerns a weak form of Parshin's conjecture, which states that the rational motivic Borel--Moore homology of a quasiprojective variety of dimension $m$ over a finite field in bidegree $(s,t)$ vanishes for $s>m+t$. It is shown that this conjecture holds if and only if the cyclic action on the motivic cohomology of an Artin--Schreier field extension in bidegree $(i,j)$ is trivial if $i<j$.
We study the motivic Grothendieck group of algebraic varieties from the point of view of stable birational geometry. In particular, we obtain a counter-example to a conjecture of M. Kapranov on the rationality of motivic zeta-function.
We construct a period regulator for motivic cohomology of an algebraic scheme over a subfield of the complex numbers. For the field of algebraic numbers we formulate a period conjecture for motivic cohomology by saying that this period regulator is surjective. Showing that a suitable Betti--de Rham realization of 1-motives is fully faithful we can verify this period conjecture in several cases. The divisibility properties of motivic cohomology imply that our conjecture is a neat generalization of the classical Grothendieck period conjecture for algebraic cycles on smooth and proper schemes. Th…
We reformulate the construction of Kontsevich's completion and use Lawson homology to define many new motivic invariants. We show that the dimensions of subspaces generated by algebraic cycles of the cohomology groups of two $K$-equivalent varieties are the same, which implies that several conjectures of algebraic cycles are $K$-statements. We define stringy functions which enable us to ask stringy Grothendieck standard conjecture and stringy Hodge conjecture. We prove a projective bundle theorem in morphic cohomology for trivial bundles over any normal quasi-projective varieties.
We develop a power structure over the Grothendieck ring of varieties relative to an abelian monoid, which allows us to compute the motivic class of the generalized Kummer scheme. We obtain a generalized version of Cheah's formula for the Hilbert scheme of points, which specializes to Gulbrandsen's conjecture for Euler characteristics. Moreover, in the surface case we prove a conjecture of Göttsche for geometrically ruled surfaces, and we obtain an explicit formula for the virtual motive of the generalized Kummer scheme in dimension three.
We study the coherent cohomology of automorphic sheaves corresponding to Siegel modular forms $f$ of low weight on ${\rm GSp}(4)$ Shimura varieties. Inspired by the work of Prasanna--Venkatesh on singular cohomology of locally symmetric spaces, we propose a conjecture that explains all the contributions of a Hecke eigensystem to coherent cohomology in terms of the action of a motivic cohomology group. Under some technical conditions, we prove that our conjecture is equivalent to Beilinson's conjecture for the adjoint $L$-function of $f$. We also prove some unconditional results in special case…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. Let W(k) be the ring of Witt vectors with coefficients in k. We prove a motivic conjecture of Milne that relates, in the case of abelian schemes, the étale cohomology with $\dbZ_p$ coefficients to the crystalline cohomology with integral coefficients, in the more general context of p-divisible groups endowed with {\it arbitrary} families of crystalline tensors over a finite, discrete valuation ring extension of W(k). This extends a result of Faltings in [Fa2]. As a main new tool we construct global deformations of p-divisible groups…
We study motivic zeta functions of degenerating families of Calabi-Yau varieties. Our main result says that they satisfy an analog of Igusa's monodromy conjecture if the family has a so-called Galois-equivariant Kulikov model; we provide several classes of examples where this condition is verified. We also establish a close relation between the zeta function and the skeleton that appeared in Kontsevich and Soibelman's non-archimedean interpretation of the SYZ conjecture in mirror symmetry.
Recently, it is well known that the conjectural integral identity is of crucial importance in the motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants theory for non-commutative Calabi-Yau threefolds. The purpose of this article is to consider different versions of the identity, for regular functions and formal functions, and to give them the positive answer for the ground field algebraically closed. Technically, the result on motivic Milnor fiber by Hrushovski-Loeser using Hrushovski-Kazhdan's motivic integration and Nicaise's computations on motivic integrals on special formal schemes are main tools.
We apply Wildeshaus's theory of motivic intermediate extensions to the motivic decomposition conjecture, formulated by Deninger-Murre and Corti-Hanamura. We first obtain a general motivic decomposition for the Chow motive of an arbitrary smooth projective family $f:X \rightarrow S$ whose geometric fibers are Tate. Using Voevodsky's motives with rational coefficients, the formula is valid for an arbitrary regular base $S$, without assuming the existence of a base field or even of a prime integer $\ell$ invertible on $S$. This result, and some of Bondarko' ideas, lead us to a generalized formula…
We show that the Conjecture of Voevodsky concerning slices of the algebraic cobordism spectrum MGL implies a general statement about the slices of motivic Landweber spectra. In particular it confirms the possible approach suggested by Voevodsky for the computation of the slices of the homotopy algebraic K-theory spectrum KGL via a Conner-Floyd isomorphism complementing Levine's unconditional proof of these slices over perfect fields. A similar result, and Voevodsky's conjecture over fields of char. 0, are also announced by Hopkins-Morel.
Given a smooth projective variety $M$ endowed with a faithful action of a finite group $G$, following Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura and Fantechi-Göttsche, we define the orbifold motive (or Chen-Ruan motive) of the quotient stack $[M/G]$ as an algebra object in the category of Chow motives. Inspired by Ruan, one can formulate a motivic version of his Cohomological HyperKähler Resolution Conjecture. We prove this motivic version, as well as its K-theoretic analogue conjectured by Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura, in two situations related to an abelian surface $A$ and a positive integer $n$. Case (A) concerns Hi…
Hilbert scheme topological invariants of plane curve singularities are identified to framed threefold stable pair invariants. As a result, the conjecture of Oblomkov and Shende on HOMFLY polynomials of links of plane curve singularities is given a Calabi-Yau threefold interpretation. The motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory developed by M. Kontsevich and the third author then yields natural motivic invariants for algebraic knots. This construction is motivated by previous work of V. Shende, C. Vafa and the first author on the large $N$ duality derivation of the above conjecture.
We review some recent results and conjectures saying that, roughly speaking, periodic cyclic homology of a smooth non-commutative algebraic variety should carry all the additional "motivic" structures possessed by the usual de Rham cohomology of a smooth algebraic variety (specifically, an R-Hodge structure for varieties over R, and a filtered Dieudonne module structure for varieties over Z_p). To appear in Proc. ICM 2010.
We define a regulator map from the weight n polylogarithmic motivic complex to the weight n Deligne complex of an algebraic variety X. The regulator map is constructed explicitly via the classical polylogarithms with some funny combinations of Bernoulli numbers as coefficients. This leads to conjectures on special values of L-functions at s=n which reduce to Zagier's conjecture when X is of dimension zero over Q. The cone of this map, shifted by one, should be called the Arakelov motivic complex of X. Its last cohomology group is identified with a group of codimension n Arakelov cycles on X.
We prove equivariant versions of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjecture for Bredon motivic cohomology of smooth complex and real varieties with an action of the group of order two. This identifies equivariant motivic and topological invariants in a large range of degrees.
For a K3 surface S, we study motivic invariants of stable pairs moduli spaces associated to 3-fold thickenings of S. We conjecture suitable deformation and divisibility invariances for the Betti realization. Our conjectures, together with earlier calculations of Kawai-Yoshioka, imply a full determination of the theory in terms of the Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points of S. The work may be viewed as the third in a sequence of formulas starting with Yau-Zaslow and Katz-Klemm-Vafa (each recovering the former). Numerical data suggest the motivic invariants are linked to the Mathieu M_…
We categorify the inclusion-exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In charac…
In 1985 Kazuya Kato formulated a fascinating framework of conjectures which generalizes the Hasse principle for the Brauer group of a global field to the so-called cohomological Hasse principle for an arithmetic scheme. In this paper we prove the prime-to-characteristic part of the cohomological Hasse principle. We also explain its implications on finiteness of motivic cohomology and special values of zeta functions.
