In this work, we study the Cauchy problem of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials in a close-to-quilibrium framework. We prove that the solution to the Cauchy problem enjoys the analytic regularizing effect of the time variable with an L2 initial datum for positive time. So that the smoothing effect of Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials is exactly same as heat equation.
In this work, we study the linear Landau equation with soft potential and show that the solution to the Cauchy problem with initial datum in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ enjoys an analytic regularizing effect, and the evolution of analytic radius is same as heat equations.
We study the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equations with hard potential in the perturbation setting, and establish the analytic smoothing effect in both spatial and velocity variables for a class of low-regularity weak solutions. This shows the Landau equations behave essentially as the hypoelliptic Fokker-Planck operators. The spatial analyticity relies on a new time-average operator, and the proof is based on a straightforward energy estimate with a careful estimate on the derivatives with respect to the new time-average operator.
We consider the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Landau equation of Maxwellian molecules, under the perturbation frame work to global equilibrium. We show that if $H^r_x(L^2_v), r >3/2$ norm of the initial perturbation is small enough, then the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Landau equation admits a unique global solution which becomes analytic with respect to both position $x$ and velocity $v$ variables for any time $t>0$. This is the first result of analytic smoothing effect for the spatially inhomogeneous nonlinear kinetic equation. The method used here is microlocal analysis and energy est…
In this work, we study the nonlinear spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potential in a close-to-equilibrium framework, we show that the solution to the Cauchy problem with $L^2$ initial datum enjoys a analytic Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect in the class $S^1_1(\mathbb{R}^3)$, meaning that the solution of the Cauchy problem and its Fourier transformation are analytic for any positive time, the evolution of analytic radius is similar to the heat equation.
In this work, we study the nonlinear spatially homogeneous Lan-dau equation with Maxwellian molecules, by using the spectral analysis, we show that the non linear Landau operators is almost linear, and we prove the existence of weak solution for the Cauchy problem with the initial datum belonging to Shubin space of negative index which conatins the probability measures. Based on this spectral decomposition, we prove also that the Cauchy problem enjoys Gelfand-Shilov smoothing effect, meaning that the weak solution of the Cauchy problem with Shubin class initial datum is ultra-analytics and exp…
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation with initial data that is bounded by a Gaussian in the velocity variable. In the case of moderately soft potentials, we show that weak solutions immediately become smooth and remain smooth as long as the mass, energy, and entropy densities remain under control. For very soft potentials, we obtain the same conclusion with the additional assumption that a sufficiently high moment of the solution in the velocity variable remains bounded. Our proof relies on the iteration of local Schauder-type estimates.
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous non-cutoff Kac's model of the Boltzmann equation. We prove that the Cauchy problem for the fluctuation around the Maxwellian distribution enjoys Gelfand-Shilov regularizing properties with respect to the velocity variable and Gevrey regularizing properties with respect to the position variable.
In this paper, we consider the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We prove that every $L^1$ weak solution to the Cauchy problem with finite moments of all order acquires the $C^\infty$ regularity in the velocity variable for the positive time.
In this article we study the Gevrey regularization effect for the spatially inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. This equation is partially elliptic in the velocity direction and degenerates in the spatial variable. We consider the nonlinear Cauchy problem for the fluctuation around the Maxwellian distribution and prove that any solution with mild regularity will become smooth in Gevrey class at positive time, with Gevrey index depending on the angular singularity. Our proof relies on the symbolic calculus for the collision operator and the global subelliptic estimate for t…
In this paper, we study the Gevrey class regularity for solutions of the spatially homogeneous Landau equations in the hard potential case and the Maxwellian molecules case.
We consider the non-linear spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules in a close-to-equilibrium framework and show that the Cauchy problem for the fluctuation around the Maxwellian equilibrium distribution enjoys a Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect implying the ultra-analyticity of both the fluctuation and its Fourier transform for any positive time.
In this paper, we study the smoothness effect of Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous Landau equation in the hard potential case and the Maxwellian molecules case. We obtain the analytic smoothing effect for the solutions under rather weak assumptions on the initial datum.
We describe a time-dependent functional involving the relative entropy and the $\dot{H}^1$ seminorm, which decreases along solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. The study of this monotone functionial sheds light on the competition between the dissipation and the nonlinearity for this equation. It enables to obtain new results concerning regularity/blowup issues for the Landau equation with Coulomb potential.
We study the Landau equation for a mixture of two species in the whole space, with initial condition of one species near a vacuum and the other near a Maxwellian equilibrium state. For the linearized level, without any smoothness assumption on the initial data, it is shown that the solution becomes smooth instantaneously in both the space and momentum variables. Moreover, the large time behavior of the solution is also obtained.
In this paper we study the Gevrey smoothing effect of solutions to the non-cutoff spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation for soft potential. We consider the mild singularity case $s<1/2$ as we did in the previous work for spatially homogeneous case (J. Diff. Equ. 253(4) (2012), 1172-1190. DOI: 10.1016/j.jde.2012.04.023) and for spatially inhomogeneous case (arXiv:1304.2971), and try to extend the range of $γ$. We derive a new coercivity estimate for collision operator, using which we can obtain the Gevrey regularity for $γ\in (-5/2,0)$ improving the previous assumption $γ\i…
We prove that the Cauchy problem associated to the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian molecules enjoys the same Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator.
In this article we study global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger evolution corresponding to long-range perturbations of the Euclidean Laplacian. This is a natural continuation of a recent article of the third author, where it is proved that local smoothing estimates imply Strichartz estimates. In the aforementioned paper, the third author proved the local smoothing estimates for small perturbations of the Laplacian. Here we consider the case of large perturbations in three increasingly favorable scenarios: (i) without non-trapping assumptions we prove estimates outside a compac…
In this note, we study the Cauchy problem of the linear spatially homogeneous Landau equation with soft potentials. We prove that the solution to the Cauchy problem enjoys the analytic regularizing effect of the time variable with an L2 initial datum for positive time. So that the smoothing effect of Cauchy problem for the linear spatially homogeneous Landau equation with soft potentials is similar to the heat equation.
In this paper we study the Gevrey regularity for the weak solutions to the Cauchy problem of the non-cutoff spatially homogeneous Botlzmann equation for the Maxwellian molecules model with the singularity exponent $s\in (0,1)$. We establish that any weak solution belongs to the Gevrey spaces for any positive time.
The smoothing effect of the Cauchy problem for a class of kinetic equations is studied. We firstly consider the spatially homogeneous non linear Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules and inhomogeneous linear Fokker-Planck equation to show the ultra-analytic effects of the Cauchy problem. Those smoothing effect results are optimal and similar to heat equation. In the second part, we study a model of spatially inhomogeneous linear Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules, and show the analytic effect of the Cauchy problem.
In this paper, we are concerned with complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equations. There are several results on the global existence and smoothing effects of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for (CGL) in bounded or unbounded domains. In this paper, we study the time periodic problem for (CGL) in bounded domains. The main strategy in this paper is to regard (CGL) as a parabolic equation with monotone and non-monotone perturbations and to apply non-monotone perturbation theory of parabolic equations developed by Otani (1984).
We prove a quantitative propagation of chaos, uniformly in time, for the spatially homogeneous Landau equation in the case of Maxwellian molecules. We improve the results of Fontbona, Guérin and Méléard \cite{FonGueMe} and Fournier \cite{Fournier} where the propagation of chaos is proved for finite time. Moreover, we prove a quantitative estimate on the rate of convergence to equilibrium uniformly in the number of particles.
Departing from the weak solution, we prove the uniqueness, smoothing estimates and the global dynamics for the non cutoff spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with moderate soft potentials. Our results show that the behavior of the solution(including the production of regularity and the longtime behavior) can be {\it characterized quantitatively} by the initial data at the large velocities, i.e.(i). initially polynomial decay at the large velocities in $L^1$ space will induce the finite smoothing estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces and the polynomial convergence rate (including the lower …
We study a regularized version of the Landau equation, which was recently introduced in~\cite{CHWW20} to numerically approximate the Landau equation with good accuracy at reasonable computational cost. We develop the existence and uniqueness theory for weak solutions, and we reinforce the numerical findings in~\cite{CHWW20} by rigorously proving the validity of particle approximations to the regularized Landau equation.
By using the energy-type inequality, we obtain, in this paper, the result on propagation of Gevrey regularity for the solution of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation in the cases of Maxwellian molecules and hard potential.
We consider the spatially homogeneous Landau equation of kinetic theory, and provide a differential inequality for the Wasserstein distance with quadratic cost between two solutions. We deduce some well-posedness results. The main difficulty is that this equation presents a singularity for small relative velocities. Our uniqueness result is the first one in the important case of soft potentials. Furthermore, it is almost optimal for a class of moderately soft potentials, that is for a moderate singularity. Indeed, in such a case, our result applies for initial conditions with finite mass, ener…
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with Debye-Yukawa potential. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys the same smoothing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional logarithmic harmonic oscillator. To be specific, we can prove the solution of the Cauchy problem belongs to Shubin spaces.
We prove the uniqueness of bounded solutions for the spatially homogeneous Fokker-Planck-Landau equation with a Coulomb potential. Since the local (in time) existence of such solutions has been proved by Arsen'ev-Peskov (1977), we deduce a local well-posedness result. The stability with respect to the initial condition is also checked.
We are concerned with the uniqueness of weak solution to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interactions under the assumption that the solution is bounded in the space $L^\infty(0,T,L^p(\R^3))$ for some $p>3/2$. The proof uses a weighted Poincaré-Sobolev inequality recently introduced in \cite{GG18}.
It is expected in physics that the homogeneous quantum Boltzmann equation with Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein statistics and with Maxwell-Boltzmann operator (neglecting effect of the statistics) for the weak coupled gases will converge to the homogeneous Fokker-Planck-Landau equation as the Planck constant $\hbar$ tends to zero. In this paper and the upcoming work \cite{HLP2}, we will provide a mathematical justification on this semi-classical limit. Key ingredients into the proofs are the new framework to catch the {\it weak projection gradient}, which is motivated by Villani \cite{V1} to ident…
We establish a priori upper bounds for solutions to the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation in the case of moderately soft potentials, with arbitrary initial data, under the assumption that mass, energy and entropy densities stay under control. Our pointwise estimates decay polynomially in the velocity variable. We also show that if the initial data satisfies a Gaussian upper bound, this bound is propagated for all positive times.
The real Ginzburg-Landau equation arises as a universal amplitude equation for the description of pattern-forming systems exhibiting a Turing bifurcation. It possesses spatially periodic roll solutions which are known to be stable against localized perturbations. It is the purpose of this paper to prove their stability against bounded perturbations, which are not necessarily localized. Since all state-of-the-art techniques rely on localization or periodicity properties of perturbations, we develop a new method, which employs pure $L^\infty$-estimates only. By fully exploiting the smoothing pro…
In this note we prove that, under some minimal regularity assumptions on the initial datum, solutions to the spatially homogenous Boltzmann and Landau equations for hard potentials uniformly propagate the Fisher information. The proof of such a result is based upon some explicit pointwise lower bound on solutions to Boltzmann equation and strong diffusion properties for the Landau equation. We include an application of this result related to emergence and propagation of exponential tails for the solution's gradient. These results complement estimates provided in the literature.
We present in this paper an estimate which bounds from below the entropy dissipation D(f) of the Landau operator with Coulomb interaction by a weighted H^1 norm of the square root of f. As a consequence, we get a weighted L^1_t(L^3_v) estimate for the solutions of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interaction, and the propagation of L^1 moments of any order for this equation. We also present an application of our estimate to the Landau equation with (moderately) soft potentials, providing thus a new proof of some recent results of Kung-Chien Wu
We establish the well-posedness and some quantitative stability of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for hard potentials, using some specific Monge-Kantorovich cost, assuming only that the initial condition is a probability measure with a finite moment of order $p$ for some $p>2$. As a consequence, we extend previous regularity results and show that all non-degenerate measure-valued solutions to the Landau equation, with a finite initial energy, immediately admit analytic densities with finite entropy. Along the way, we prove that the Landau equation instantaneously creates Gaussian mo…
We prove a Schauder estimate for kinetic Fokker-Planck equations that requires only Hölder regularity in space and velocity but not in time. As an application, we deduce a weak-strong uniqueness result of classical solutions to the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation beginning from initial data having Hölder regularity in $x$ and only a logarithmic modulus of continuity in $v$. This replaces an earlier result requiring Hölder continuity in both variables.
We investigate in this work the rate of convergence to equilibrium of solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with soft potentials. Firstly, we prove a polynomial in time convergence using an entropy method with some new a priori estimates. Finally we prove an exponential in time convergence towards the equilibrium with the optimal rate given by the spectral gap of the associated linearized operator, combining new decay estimates for the semigroup generated by the linearized Landau operator in weighted $L^p$-spaces togheter with the polynomial decay described above.
Landau damping is the tendency of solutions to the Vlasov equation towards spatially homogeneous distribution functions. The distribution functions however approach the spatially homogeneous manifold only weakly, and Boltzmann entropy is not changed by Vlasov equation. On the other hand, density and kinetic energy density, which are integrals of the distribution function, approach spatially homogeneous states strongly, which is accompanied by growth of the hydrodynamic entropy. Such a behavior can be seen when Vlasov equation is reduced to the evolution equations for density and kinetic energy…
In an appropriate moving coordinate frame, source defects are time-periodic solutions to reaction-diffusion equations that are spatially asymptotic to spatially periodic wave trains whose group velocities point away from the core of the defect. In this paper, we rigorously establish nonlinear stability of spectrally stable source defects in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Due to the outward transport at the far field, localized perturbations may lead to a highly non-localized response even on the linear level. To overcome this, we first investigate in detail the dynamics of the solution …
This paper deals with the long time behaviour of solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials . We prove an exponential in time convergence towards the equilibrium with the optimal rate given by the spectral gap of the associated linearized operator. This result improves the polynomial in time convergence obtained by Desvillettes and Villani \cite{DesVi2}. Our approach is based on new decay estimates for the semigroup generated by the linearized Landau operator in weighted (polynomial or stretched exponential) $L^p$-spaces, using a method develloped by Gualdani, …
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Landau equation with Coulomb interactions. Despite it's physical importance, this equation has not received a lot of mathematical attention we think due to the extreme complexity of the relativistic structure of the kernel of the collision operator. In this paper we first largely decompose the structure of the relativistic Landau collision operator. After that we prove the global Entropy dissipation estimate. Then we prove the propagation of any polynomial moment for a weak solution. Lastly we prove the existe…
In this work, we prove the existence, uniqueness and smoothing properties of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with Debye-Yukawa potential for probability measure initial datum.
Applying the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction approach introduced by Mielke and Schneider in their analysis of the fourth-order scalar Swift-Hohenberg equation, we carry out a rigorous small-amplitude stability analysis of Turing patterns for the canonical second-order system of reaction diffusion equations given by the Brusselator model. Our results confirm that stability is accurately predicted in the small-amplitude limit by the formal Ginzburg Landau amplitude equations, rigorously validating the standard weakly unstable approximation and Eckhaus criterion.
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzamnn equation with Maxwellian molecules. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect, that means the smoothing properties is same as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator. The power of this fractional is exactly the singular index of non-cutoff collisional kernel of Boltzmann operator. So that we get the regularity of solution in the Gevery class with the sharp power and the optimal exponential decay of solutions. …
We consider weak solutions of the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials ($γ\in (0,1]$), under the assumption that mass, energy, and entropy densities are under control. In this regime, with arbitrary initial data, we show that solutions satisfy pointwise Gaussian upper and lower bounds in the velocity variable. This is different from the behavior in the soft potentials case ($γ<0$), where Gaussian estimates are known not to hold without corresponding assumptions on the initial data. Our upper bounds imply weak solutions are $C^\infty$ in all three variables, and that con…
