We describe a time-dependent functional involving the relative entropy and the $\dot{H}^1$ seminorm, which decreases along solutions to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. The study of this monotone functionial sheds light on the competition between the dissipation and the nonlinearity for this equation. It enables to obtain new results concerning regularity/blowup issues for the Landau equation with Coulomb potential.
We prove that the set of singular times for weak solutions of the space homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential constructed as in [C. Villani, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 143 (1998), 273-307] has Hausdorff dimension at most 1/2.
We prove the uniqueness of bounded solutions for the spatially homogeneous Fokker-Planck-Landau equation with a Coulomb potential. Since the local (in time) existence of such solutions has been proved by Arsen'ev-Peskov (1977), we deduce a local well-posedness result. The stability with respect to the initial condition is also checked.
We are concerned with the uniqueness of weak solution to the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interactions under the assumption that the solution is bounded in the space $L^\infty(0,T,L^p(\R^3))$ for some $p>3/2$. The proof uses a weighted Poincaré-Sobolev inequality recently introduced in \cite{GG18}.
We present in this paper an estimate which bounds from below the entropy dissipation D(f) of the Landau operator with Coulomb interaction by a weighted H^1 norm of the square root of f. As a consequence, we get a weighted L^1_t(L^3_v) estimate for the solutions of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interaction, and the propagation of L^1 moments of any order for this equation. We also present an application of our estimate to the Landau equation with (moderately) soft potentials, providing thus a new proof of some recent results of Kung-Chien Wu
Motivated by the question of existence of global solutions, we obtain pointwise upper bounds for radially symmetric and monotone solutions to the homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. The estimates say that blow up in the $L^\infty$-norm at a finite time $T$ can occur only if the $L^{3/2}$-norm of the solution concentrates for times close to $T$. The bounds are obtained using the comparison principle for the Landau equation and for the associated mass function. This method provides long-time existence results for the isotropic version of the Landau equation with Coulomb potential…
In this paper, we prove global-in-time existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the homogeneous Landau-Fermi-Dirac equation with Coulomb potential. The initial conditions are nonnegative, bounded and integrable. We also show that any weak solution converges towards the steady state given by the Fermi-Dirac statistics. Furthermore, the convergence is algebraic, provided that the initial datum is close to the steady state in a suitable weighted Lebesgue norm.
In this manuscript we consider an isotropic modification for the Landau equation with Coulomb potential in three space dimensions. Global in time existence of weak solutions for even initial data is shown by employing a time semi-discretization of the equation, an entropy inequality and a uniform estimate for the second moment of the solution to the discretized problem. Moreover, under an additional condition that has to be satisfied uniformly over time, uniform boundedness of the solution is proved, with bounds depending solely on the mass, second moment and entropy of the solution. A byprodu…
This paper studies the regularity of Villani solutions of the space homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb interaction in dimension 3. Specifically, we prove that any such solution belonging to the Lebesgue space L_{t}^{\infty}L_{v}^{q} with q>3 in an open cylinder (0,S)\times B, where B is an open ball of \mathbb{R}^{3}, must have Holder continuous second order derivatives in the velocity variables, and first order derivative in the time variable locally in any compact subset of that cylinder.
This work deals with the Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials near the associated Maxwellian equilibrium. We first investigate the corresponding linearized operator and develop a method to prove stability estimates of its associated semigroup in large functional spaces. We then deduce existence, uniqueness and fast decay of the solutions to the nonlinear equation in a close-to-equilibrium framework. Our result drastically improves the set of initial data compared to the one considered by Guo and Strain who established similar results in [21, 37, 38]. Our functional framework is…

This work deals with the large time behaviour of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential. Firstly, we obtain a bound from below of the entropy dissipation $D(f)$ by a weighted relative Fisher information of $f$ with respect to the associated Maxwellian distribution, which leads to a variant of Cercignani's conjecture thanks to a logarithmic Sobolev inequality. Secondly, we prove the propagation of polynomial and stretched exponential moments with an at most linearly growing in time rate. As an application of these estimates, we show the convergence of any ($H$- or weak…

In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limits of both the Landau equation and the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system in the whole space. Our main purpose is two-fold: the first one is to give a rigorous derivation of the compressible Euler equations from the Landau equation via the Hilbert expansion; while the second one is to prove, still in the setting of Hilbert expansion, that the unique classical solution of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system converges, which is shown to be globally in time, to the resulting global smooth solution of the Euler-Maxwell system, as the Knudsen number goes to zero.…
This is a review about a series of results on vortices in the Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity on the one hand, and point patterns in Coulomb gases on the other hand, as well as the connections between the two topics.
This paper is concerned with the stochastic generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by a multiplicative noise of jump type. By a prior estimate, weak convergence and monotonicity technique, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution of an initial-boundary value problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. However, for the generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation, such a locally monotonic condition of the nonlinear term can not be satisfied in a straight way. For this, we utilize the characteristic structure of nonlinear term and refined analysis to overcome this gap.

We prove the uniqueness of weak solutions to the spatially homogeneous special relativistic Landau equation under the conditional assumption that the solution satisfies $(p^0)^7 F(t,p) \in L^1 ([0,T]; L^\infty)$. The existence of standard weak solutions to the relativistic Landau equation has been shown recently in (arXiv:1806.08720)
We study Ginzburg--Landau equations for a complex vector order parameter Psi=(psi_+,psi_-). We consider symmetric (equivariant) vortex solutions in the plane R^2 with given degrees n_\pm, and prove existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of solutions for large r. We also consider the monotonicity properties of solutions, and exhibit parameter ranges in which both vortex profiles |psi_+|, |psi_i| are monotone, as well as parameter regimes where one component is non-monotone. The qualitative results are obtained by means of a sub- and supersolution construction and a comparison theorem fo…
We consider the homogeneous and inhomogeneous Landau equation for very soft and Coulomb potentials and show that approximate Type I self-similar blow-up solutions do not exist under mild decay assumptions on the profile. We extend our analysis to the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system and to the Boltzmann equation without angular cut-off.
We establish the behavior of the energy of minimizers of non-local Ginzburg-Landau energies with Coulomb repulsion in two space dimensions near the onset of multi-droplet patterns. Under suitable scaling of the background charge density with vanishing surface tension the non-local Ginzburg-Landau energy becomes asymptotically equivalent to a sharp interface energy with screened Coulomb interaction. Near the onset the minimizers of the sharp interface energy consist of nearly identical circular droplets of small size separated by large distances. In the limit the droplets become uniformly distr…
We consider a relativistic hydrogenic atom in a strong magnetic field. The ground state level depends on the strength of the magnetic field and reaches the lower end of the spectral gap of the Dirac-Coulomb operator for a certain critical value, the critical magnetic field. We also define a critical magnetic field in a Landau level ansatz. In both cases, when the charge Z of the nucleus is not too small, these critical magnetic fields are huge when measured in Tesla, but not so big when the equation is written in dimensionless form. When computed in the Landau level ansatz, orders of magnitude…
Based on the recent study on the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system with general angular cutoff potentials [3, 4], we establish in this paper the global existence of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system that includes the Coulomb potential. This then provides a different approach on this topic from the recent work [8].
The well-known Rutherford differential cross section, denoted by $ dΩ/dσ$, corresponds to a two body interaction with Coulomb potential. It leads to the logarithmically divergence of the momentum transfer (or the transport cross section) which is described by $$\int_{{\mathbb S}^2} (1-\cosθ) \frac{dΩ}{dσ} dσ\sim \int_0^π θ^{-1}dθ. $$ Here $θ$ is the deviation angle in the scattering event. Due to screening effect, physically one can assume that $θ_{\min}$ is the order of magnitude of the smallest angles for which the scattering can still be regarded as Coulomb scattering. Under ad hoc cutoff $…
We prove that the isotropic Landau equation equipped with the Coulomb potential introduced by Krieger-Strain and Gualdani-Guillen can be identified with the gradient flow of the entropy in the probability space with respect to a Riemannian metric tensor with nonlocal mobility. We give characterizations of the corresponding geodesics equations and present a convergence rate result by estimating its Hessian operator.
The Landau equation and the Boltzmann equation are connected through the limit of grazing collisions. This has been proved rigorously for certain families of Boltzmann operators concentrating on grazing collisions. In this contribution, we study the collision kernels associated to the two-particle scattering via a finite range potential $Φ(x)$ in three dimensions. We then consider the limit of weak interaction given by $Φ_ε(x) = εΦ(x)$. Here $ε\rightarrow 0$ is the grazing parameter, and the rate of collisions is rescaled to obtain a non-trivial limit. The grazing collisions limit is of partic…
This paper deals with the derivation of some á priori estimates for the homogeneous Landau equation with soft potentials. Using the coercivity of the Landau operator for soft potentials, we prove a global estimate of weak solutions in $L^2$ space without any smallness assumption on the initial data for $ -2 < γ<0$. For the stronger case $ -3 \leq γ\leq -2$, which covers in particular the Coulomb case, we get such a global estimate, but in some weighted $L^2$ space and under a smallness assumption on initial data.
In this manuscript we investigate the regularization of solutions for the spatially homogeneous Landau equation. For moderately soft potentials, it is shown that weak solutions become smooth instantaneously and stay so over all times, and the estimates depend only on the initial mass, energy, and entropy. For very soft potentials we obtain a conditional regularity result, hinging on what may be described as a nonlinear Morrey space bound, assumed to hold uniformly over time. This bound always holds in the case of moderately soft potentials, and nearly holds for general potentials, including Co…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Landau equation with Coulomb interactions. Despite it's physical importance, this equation has not received a lot of mathematical attention we think due to the extreme complexity of the relativistic structure of the kernel of the collision operator. In this paper we first largely decompose the structure of the relativistic Landau collision operator. After that we prove the global Entropy dissipation estimate. Then we prove the propagation of any polynomial moment for a weak solution. Lastly we prove the existe…
For the Landau-Poisson system with Coulomb interaction in $\R^3_x$, we prove the global existence, uniqueness, and large time convergence rates to the Maxwellian equilibrium for solutions which start out sufficiently close.
We prove Landau damping for the collisionless Vlasov equation with a class of $L^1$ interaction potentials (including the physical case of screened Coulomb interactions) on $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$ for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous background. Unlike the confined case $\mathbb T^3_x \times \mathbb R_v^3$, results are obtained for initial data in Sobolev spaces (as well as Gevrey and analytic classes). For spatial frequencies bounded away from zero, the Landau damping of the density is similar to the confined case. The finite regularity is possible due to an add…
