We construct counterexamples for the partial data inverse problem for the fractional conductivity equation in all dimensions on general bounded open sets. In particular, we show that for any bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and any disjoint open sets $W_1,W_2 \Subset \mathbb{R}^n \setminus \barΩ$ there always exist two positive, bounded, smooth, conductivities $γ_1,γ_2$, $γ_1 \neq γ_2$, with equal partial exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps $Λ_{γ_1}f|_{W_2} = Λ_{γ_2}f|_{W_2}$ for all $f \in C_c^\infty(W_1)$. The proof uses the characterization of equal exterior data from another work of the authors in combination with the maximum principle of fractional Laplacians. The main technical difficulty arises from the requirement that the conductivities should be strictly positive and have a special regularity property $γ_i^{1/2}-1 \in H^{2s,\frac{n}{2s}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for $i=1,2$. We also provide counterexamples on domains that are bounded in one direction when $n \geq 4$ or $s \in (0,n/4]$ when $n=2,3$ using a modification of the argument on bounded domains.
We prove uniqueness for minimizers of the weighted least gradient problem \[\inf \left\lbrace \int_Ω a|Du|: \ \ u\in BV(Ω), \ \ u|_{\partial Ω}=f \right\rbrace.\] The weight function $a$ is assumed to be continuous and it is allowed to vanish in certain subsets of $Ω$. Existence is assumed a priori. Our approach is motivated by the hybrid inverse problem of imaging electric conductivity from interior knowledge (obtainable by MRI) of the magnitude of one current density vector field.
The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we would like to derive quantitative uniqueness estimates for solutions of the general complex conductivity equation. It is still unknown whether the \emph{strong} unique continuation property holds for such equations. Nonetheless, in this paper, we show that the unique continuation property in the form of three-ball inequalities is satisfied for the complex conductivity equation under only Lipschitz assumption on the leading coefficients. The derivation of such estimates relies on a delicate Carleman estimate. Secondly, we study the problem of estimat…
In this paper we study an inverse problem for fractional anisotropic conductivity. Our nonlocal operator is based on the well-developed theory of nonlocal vector calculus, and differs substantially from other generalizations of the classical anisotropic conductivity operator obtained spectrally. We show that the anisotropic conductivity matrix can be recovered uniquely from fractional Dirichlet-to-Neumann data up to a natural gauge. Our analysis makes use of techniques recently developed for the study of the isotropic fractional elasticity equation, and generalizes them to the case of non-sepa…
We deal with entropy solutions to the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations in the space-periodic case. In more than one space dimension, the methods developed by De Lellis-Székelyhidi enable us to show failure of uniqueness on a finite time-interval for entropy solutions starting from any continuously differentiable initial density and suitably constructed bounded initial linear momenta.
In this paper we investigate the uniqueness of solutions of the steady planar Navier-Stokes equations with different boundary conditions in the exterior domain. For a class of incompressible flow with constant vorticity, we prove the uniqueness of the solution under the enhanced Navier boundary conditions. At the same time, some counterexamples are given to show that the uniqueness of the solution fails under the Navier boundary conditions. For the general incompressible flow with Dirichlet boundary condition, we prove various sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution.
We prove uniqueness of the inverse conductivity problem in three dimensions for complex conductivities in $W^{1,\infty}$. We apply quaternionic analysis to transform the inverse problem into an inverse Dirac scattering problem, as established in two dimensions by Brown and Uhlmann. This is a novel methodology that allows to extend the uniqueness result from once-differentiable real conductivities to complex ones.
We consider the impedance tomography problem in the plane. Using Bukhgeim's scattering data for the Dirac problem, we prove that the conductivity is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neuman map
We prove uniqueness in the inverse conductivity problem for uniformly elliptic conductivities in $W^{s,p}(Ω)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ is Lipschitz, $3\leq n \leq 6$, and $s$ and $p$ are such that $ W^{s,p}(Ω)\not \subset W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$. In particular, we obtain uniqueness for conductivities in $W^{1,n}(Ω)$ ($n=3,4$). This improves on the result of the author and Tataru, who assumed that the conductivity is Lipschitz.
In this paper we study the inverse conductivity problem with partial data. Moreover, we show that, in dimension $n\geq 3$ the uniqueness of the Calderón problem holds for the $C^{1}\bigcap H^{3/2, 2}$ conductivities.
The multifrequency electrical impedance tomography is considered in order to image a conductivity inclusion inside a homogeneous background medium by injecting one current. An original spectral decomposition of the solution of the forward conductivity problem is used to retrieve the Cauchy data corresponding to the extreme case of perfect conductor. Using results based on the unique continuation we then prove the uniqueness of multifrequency electrical impedance tomography and obtain rigorous stability estimates. Our results in this paper are quite surprising in inverse conductivity problem si…
We use X^{s,b}-inspired spaces to prove a uniqueness result for Calderon's problem in a Lipschitz domain under the assumption that the conductivity is Lipschitz. For Lipschitz conductivities, we obtain uniqueness for conductivities close to the identity in a suitable sense. We also prove uniqueness for arbitrary C^1 conductivities.

We consider an inverse boundary value problem for the heat equation with a nonsmooth coefficient of conductivity which models the displacement of a moving body inside a nonhomogeneous background. We prove the uniqueness of the moving inclusion from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator by using a dynamical probe method.
We study the linear Vlasov equation with a given electric field $E \in \mathcal{S}$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is the space of Schwartz functions. The associated damped partial differential equation has a unique tempered solution, which fixes the needed Cauchy datum. This tempered solution then converges to the causal solution of the linear Vlasov equation when the damping parameter goes to zero. This result allows us to define the plasma conductivity operator $σ$, which gives the current density $j = σ(E)$ induced by the electric field $E$. We prove that $σ$ is continuous from $\mathcal{S}$ to its …
We prove \emph{global} uniqueness for an inverse problem for the fractional conductivity equation on domains that are bounded in one direction. The conductivities are assumed to be isotropic and nontrivial in the exterior of the domain, while the data is given in the form of partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) maps measured in nondisjoint open subsets of the exterior. This can be seen as the fractional counterpart of the classical inverse conductivity problem. The proof is based on a unique continuation property (UCP) for the DN maps and an exterior determination method from the partial exterior…
We consider the inverse problem of determining, the possibly anisotropic, conductivity of a body by means of the so called local Neumann to Dirichlet map on a curved portion $Σ$ of the boundary. Motivated by the uniqueness result for piecewise constant anisotropic conductivities proved in \cite{Al-dH-G}, we provide a Hölder stability estimate on $Σ$ when the conductivity is a priori known to be a constant matrix near $Σ$.
This paper shows global uniqueness in two inverse problems for a fractional conductivity equation: an unknown conductivity in a bounded domain is uniquely determined by measurements of solutions taken in arbitrary open, possibly disjoint subsets of the exterior. Both the cases of infinitely many measurements and a single measurement are addressed. The results are based on a reduction from the fractional conductivity equation to the fractional Schrödinger equation, and as such represent extensions of previous works. Moreover, a simple application is shown in which the fractional conductivity eq…

In this paper we address the uniqueness issue in the classical Robin inverse problem on a Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\RR^n$, with $L^\infty$ Robin coefficient, $L^2$ Neumann data and isotropic conductivity of class $W^{1,r}(Ω)$, $r\textgreater{}n$. We show that uniqueness of the Robin coefficient on a subpart of the boundary given Cauchy data on the complementary part, does hold in dimension $n=2$ but needs not hold in higher dimension. We also raise on open issue on harmonic gradients which is of interest in this context.
We consider the problem of existence and uniqueness of strong a.e. solutions $u: \mathbb{R}^n \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}^N$ to the fully nonlinear PDE system \[\label{1} \tag{1} F(\cdot,D^2u ) \,=\, f, \ \ \text{ a.e. on }\mathbb{R}^n, \] when $ f\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)^N$ and $F$ is a Carathéodory map. \eqref{1} has not been considered before. The case of bounded domains has been studied by several authors, firstly by Campanato and under Campanato's ellipticity condition on $F$. By introducing a new much weaker notion of ellipticity, we prove solvability of \eqref{1} in a tailored Sobolev "ener…
We discuss the inverse problem of determining the, possibly anisotropic, conductivity of a body $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the so-called Neumann-to-Dirichlet map is locally given on a non empty curved portion $Σ$ of the boundary $\partialΩ$. We prove that anisotropic conductivities that are \textit{a-priori} known to be piecewise constant matrices on a given partition of $Ω$ with curved interfaces can be uniquely determined in the interior from the knowledge of the local Neumann-to-Dirichlet map.

We consider the determination of a conductivity function in a two-dimensional domain from the Cauchy data of the solutions of the conductivity equation on the boundary. We prove uniqueness results for this inverse problem, posed by Calderon, for conductivities that are degenerate, that is, they may not be bounded from above or below. In particular, for scalar conductivities we solve the inverse problem in a class which is larger than $L^\infty$. Also, we give new counterexamples for the uniqueness of the inverse conductivity problem. We say that a conductivity is visible if the inverse problem…

Gross-Pitaevskii and Hartree hierarchies are infinite systems of coupled PDEs emerging naturally from the mean field theory of Bose gases. Their solutions are known to be related to an initial value problem, respectively the Gross-Pitaevskii and Hartree equations. Due to their physical and mathematical relevance, the issues of well-posedness and uniqueness for these hierarchies have recently been studied thoroughly using specific nonlinear and combinatorial techniques. In this article, we introduce a new approach for the study of such hierarchy equations by firstly establishing a duality betwe…
Uniqueness in the Calderón problem in dimension bigger than two was usually studied under the assumption that conductivity has bounded gradient. For conductivities with unbounded gradients uniqueness results have not been known until recent years. The latest result due to Haberman basically relies on the optimal $L^2$ restriction estimate for hypersurface which is known as the Tomas-Stein restriction theorem. In the course of developments of the Fourier restriction problem bilinear and multilinear generalizations of the (adjoint) restriction estimates under suitable transversality condition be…
We consider the dynamics of point particles which are confined to a bounded, possibly nonconvex domain $Ω$. Collisions with the boundary are described as purely elastic collisions. This turns the description of the particle dynamics into a coupled system of second order ODEs with discontinuous right-hand side. The main contribution of this paper is to develop a precise solution concept for this particle system, and to prove existence of solutions. In this proof we construct a solution by passing to the limit in an auxiliary problem based on the Yosida approximation. In addition to existence of…
We consider the problem of recovering an isotropic conductivity outside some perfectly conducting or insulating inclusions from the interior measurement of the magnitude of one current density field $|J|$. We prove that the conductivity outside the inclusions, and the shape and position of the perfectly conducting and insulating inclusions are uniquely determined (except in an exceptional case) by the magnitude of the current generated by imposing a given boundary voltage. We have found an extension of the notion of admissibility to the case of possible presence of perfectly conducting and ins…
In this paper we prove uniqueness for an inverse boundary value problem (IBVP) arising in electrodynamics. We assume that the electromagnetic properties of the medium, namely the magnetic permeability, the electric permittivity and the conductivity, are described by continuously differentiable functions.
In this paper we show uniqueness of the conductivity for the quasilinear Calderón's inverse problem. The nonlinear conductivity depends, in a nonlinear fashion, of the potential itself and its gradient. Under some structural assumptions on the direct problem, a real-valued conductivity allowing a small analytic continuation to the complex plane induces a unique Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map. The method of proof considers some complex-valued, linear test functions based on a point of the boundary of the domain, and a linearization of the DN map placed at these particular set of solutions.
In this paper we consider the initial-boundary value problem to the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations for idea gases. Both the viscous and heat conductive coefficients are assumed to be positive constants, and the initial density is allowed to have vacuum. Global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions is established for any $H^2$ initial data, which generalizes the well-known result of Kazhikhov--Shelukhin (Kazhikhov, A. V.; Shelukhin, V. V.: \emph{Unique global solution with respect to time of initial boundary value problems for one-dimensional equations of a viscous …
We study an inverse problem for fractional elasticity. In analogy to the classical problem of linear elasticity, we consider the unique recovery of the Lamé parameters associated to a linear, isotropic fractional elasticity operator from fractional Dirichlet-to-Neumann data. In our analysis we make use of a fractional matrix Schrödinger equation via a generalization of the so-called Liouville reduction, a technique classically used in the study of the scalar conductivity equation. We conclude that unique recovery is possible if the Lamé parameters agree and are constant in the exterior, and th…
Given $(M,g)$, a compact connected Riemannian manifold of dimension $d \geq 2$, with boundary $\partial M$, we consider an initial boundary value problem for a fractional diffusion equation on $(0,T) \times M$, $T>0$, with time-fractional Caputo derivative of order $α\in (0,1) \cup (1,2)$. We prove uniqueness in the inverse problem of determining the smooth manifold $(M,g)$ (up to an isometry), and various time-independent smooth coefficients appearing in this equation, from measurements of the solution on a subset of $\partial M$ at fixed time. In the "flat" case where $M$ is a compact subset…
In this paper, we investigate the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem on cylindrical Riemannian manifolds with boundary having two ends and equipped with singular metrics of (simple or double) warped product type, that is whose warping factors only depend on the horizontal direction of the cylinder. By singular, we mean that these factors are only assumed to be positive almost everywhere and to belong to some L p space with 0 < p $\le$ $\infty$. Using recent developments on the Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for singular Sturm-Liouville operators, we prove that the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps at each e…
We deal with the problem of determining the shape of an inclusion embedded in a homogenous background medium. The multifre-quency electrical impedance tomography is used to image the inclusion. For different frequencies, a current is injected at the boundary and the resulting potential is measured. It turns out that the potential solves an elliptic equation in divergence form with discontinuous leading coefficient. For this inverse problem we aim to establish a logarithmic type stability estimate. The key point in our analysis consists in reducing the original problem to that of determining an…
In this paper we consider the multi-dimensional pressureless Euler system and we tackle the problem of existence and uniqueness of sticky particle solutions for general measure-type initial data. Although explicit counterexamples to both existence and uniqueness are known since \cite{Bressan-Nguyen}, the problem of whether one can still find sticky particle solutions for a large set of data and of how one can select them was up to our knowledge still completely open. In this paper we prove that for a comeager set of initial data in the weak topology the pressureless Euler system admits a uniqu…
