In this work we investigate the quantum information theoretical limits to several tasks related to lifetime estimation and discrimination of a two-level spontaneous optical emitter. We focus in particular on the model problem of resolving two mutually incoherent exponential decays with highly overlapping temporal probability profiles. Mirroring recent work on quantum-inspired super-resolution of point emitters, we find that direct lifetime measurement suffers from an analogue of "Rayleigh's Curse" when the time constants of the two decay channels approach one another. We propose alternative measurement schemes that circumvent this limit, and also demonstrate superiority to direct measurement for a related binary hypothesis test. Our findings add to a growing list of examples in which a quantum analysis uncovers significant information gains for certain tasks in opto-molecular metrology that do not rely on multiphoton interference, but evidently do benefit from a more thorough exploitation of the coherence properties of single photons.

We describe a simple multivariate technique of likelihood ratios for improved discrimination of signal and background in multi-dimensional quantum target detection. The technique combines two independent variables, time difference and summed energy, of a photon pair from the spontaneous parametric down-conversion source into an optimal discriminant. The discriminant performance was studied in experimental data and in Monte-Carlo modelling with clear improvement shown compared to previous techniques. As novel detectors become available, we expect this type of multivariate analysis to become inc…
An anisotropic quantum vacuum (AQV) has been predicted to induce quantum interferences during the spontaneous emission process in an atomic $V$-transition [G. S. Agarwal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5500 (2000)]. Nevertheless, the finite lifetime of the excited states is expected to strongly limit the observability of this phenomenon. In this paper, we predict that an AQV can induce a long-lifetime coherence in an atomic $Λ$-transition from the process of spontaneous emission, which has an additional advantage of removing the need for coherent laser excitation. We also carry out two metasurface desig…
The problem of non-orthogonal state discrimination underlies crucial quantum information tasks, such as cryptography and computing protocols. Therefore, it is decisive to find optimal scenarios for discrimination among quantum states. We experimentally investigate the strategy for the optimal discrimination of two non-orthogonal states considering a fixed rate of inconclusive outcomes (FRIO). The main advantage of the FRIO strategy is to interpolate between unambiguous and minimum error discrimination by solely adjusting the rate of inconclusive outcomes. We present a versatile experimental sc…
Quantum Hypothesis Testing has shown the advantages that quantum resources can offer in the discrimination of competing hypothesis. Here, we apply this framework to optomechanical systems and fundamental physics questions. In particular, we focus on an optomechanical system composed of two cavities employed to perform quantum channel discrimination. We show that input squeezed optical noise, and feasible measurement schemes on the output cavity modes, allow to obtain an advantage with respect to any comparable classical schemes. We apply these results to the discrimination of models of spontan…
Quantum emitters are an integral component for a broad range of quantum technologies including quantum communication, quantum repeaters, and linear optical quantum computation. Solid-state color centers are promising candidates for scalable quantum optics due to their long coherence time and small inhomogeneous broadening. However, once excited, color centers often decay through phonon-assisted processes, limiting the efficiency of single photon generation and photon mediated entanglement generation. Herein, we demonstrate strong enhancement of spontaneous emission rate of a single silicon-vac…
We show that entanglement between two solitary qubits in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates can be spontaneously generated due to quantum fluctuations. Recently we have shown that dark solitons are an appealing platform for qubits thanks to their appreciable long lifetime. We investigate the spontaneous generation of entanglement between dark-soliton qubits in the dissipative process of spontaneous emission. By driving the qubits with the help of oscillating magnetic field gradients, we observe the formation of long distance steady-state concurrence. Our results suggest that dark-…
Nanocavity lasers are commonly characterized by the spontaneous coupling coefficient $β$ that represents the fraction of photons emitted into the lasing mode. While $β$ is conventionally discussed in semiconductor lasers where the photon lifetime is much shorter than the carrier lifetime (class-B lasers), little is known about $β$ in atomic lasers where the photon lifetime is much longer than the other lifetimes and only the photon degree of freedom exists (class-A lasers). We investigate the impact of the spontaneous coupling coefficient $β$ on lasing properties in the class-A limit by extend…
Purcell effect predicts that spontaneous radiation is not an intrinsic property of matter, but is affected by the environment in which it is located, and is the result of the interaction of matter and field. Purcell effect can be inferred from Fermi Gold rule through strict quantum electrodynamics (QED), and through it can achieve the enhancement or suppression of radiation. We suggest that, in principle, the Purcell effect can be detected at the percentage level of neutron decay in experiments with trapped ultra-cold neutrons. As a test of our claim, we propose a currently achievable experime…
We address the many-atom emission of a dilute cloud of two-level atoms through a renormalized perturbation theory. An analytical solution for the truncated coupled-dipole equations is derived, which contains an effective spectrum associated to the initial conditions. Our solution is able to distinguish precisely classical from semi-classical predictions for large atomic ensembles. This manifests as a reduction of the cooperativity in the radiated power for higher atomic excitation, in disagreement with the fully classical prediction from linear optics. Moreover, the second-order cooperative em…

New experimental and theoretical approach to the 3d D-level lifetimes of 40Ca+
Establishing a highly efficient photon-emitter interface where the intrinsic linewidth broadening is limited solely by spontaneous emission is a key step in quantum optics. It opens a pathway to coherent light-matter interaction for, e.g., the generation of highly indistinguishable photons, few-photon optical nonlinearities, and photon-emitter quantum gates. However, residual broadening mechanisms are ubiquitous and need to be combated. For solid-state emitters charge and nuclear spin noise is of importance and the influence of photonic nanostructures on the broadening has not been clarified. …
Entanglement generation and preservation is a key task in quantum information processing, and a variety of protocols exist to entangle remote qubits via measurement of their spontaneous emission. We here propose feedback methods, based on monitoring the fluorescence of two qubits and using only local pi-pulses for control, to increase the yield and/or lifetime of entangled two-qubit states. Specifically, we describe a protocol based on photodetection of spontaneous emission (i.e. using quantum jump trajectories) which allows for entanglement preservation via measurement undoing, creating a lim…
The present work is devoted to the development of a method for high-precision tomography of ion qubit registers under conditions of limited distinguishability of the states of a logical value 0 and a logical value 1. In the considered ion qubits, the identification of the quantum state is achieved by measuring the fluorescence of the ion by repeated excitation of the cyclic transition, which includes only the lower energy state that sets a logical value 0 and becomes bright, but does not include the upper metastable state that remains dark and sets logical value 1. It is important to note that…
We report on experiments exploring the non-Hermitian dynamics of pairs of two-level atoms tightly confined in an optical lattice and driven by a near-resonant laser. Although spontaneous emission is negligible for the long-lived excited state, two-body dissipation arises from strong inelastic collisions between two atoms in the excited state. We demonstrate quasi-adiabatic control of the internal state of the pairs in the quantum Zeno regime where inelastic losses dominate. Preparing each atom pair in the longest-lived eigenstate of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing the dissipative dyna…
