We investigate a class of spectral multipliers for an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $\mathcal L$ in $\mathbb R^n$, with drift given by a real matrix $B$ whose eigenvalues have negative real parts. We prove that if $m$ is a function of Laplace transform type defined in the right half-plane, then $m(\mathcal L)$ is of weak type $(1, 1)$ with respect to the invariant measure in $\mathbb R^n$. The proof involves many estimates of the relevant integral kernels and also a bound for the number of zeros of the time derivative of the Mehler kernel, as well as an enhanced version of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck maximal operator theorem.
In this paper, we establish a good-$\lz$ inequality with two parameters in the Schrödinger settings. As it's applications, we obtain weighted estimates for spectral multipliers and Littlewood-Paley operators and their commutators in the Schrödinger settings.
We show results on $L^p$-spectral multipliers for Maxwell operators with bounded measurable coefficients. We also present similar results for the Stokes operator with Hodge boundary conditions and the Lamé system. Here we rely on resolvent estimates established recently by M.\ Mitrea and S.\ Monniaux.
A classical theorem of Mihlin yields Lp estimates for spectral multipliers Lp(R^d) -> Lp(R^d); g -> F^{-1}[f(| |^2) Fg] in terms of L^\infty bounds of the multiplier function f and its weighted derivatives up to an order > d/2. This theorem, which is a functional calculus for the standard Laplace operator, has generalisations in several contexts such as elliptic operators on domains and manifolds, Schrödinger operators and sublaplacians on Lie groups. However, for the wave equation functions f (s) = (1 + s)^{-α} e^{its} a better estimate is available, in the standard case (works of Miyachi and…
We prove a multiplier theorem for certain Laplacians with drift on Damek-Ricci spaces, which are a class of Lie groups of exponential growth. Our theorem generalizes previous results obtained by W. Hebisch, G. Mauceri and S. Meda on Lie groups of polynomial growth.
Let $L$ be a non-negative self-adjoint operator on $L^2(X)$. Assume that operator $L$ generates the analytic semigroup $\{e^{-tL}\}_{t>0}$ whose kernels satisfy the standard Gaussian upper bounds. This paper investigates the sharp weighted inequalities for spectral multipliers $F(L)$ and their commutators with BMO functions. The obtained results in this paper can be considered to be improvements of those in \cite{DSY}[Weighted norm inequalities, Gaussian bounds and sharp spectral multipliers, {\it J. Funct. Anal.}, {\bf 260} (2011), 1106-1131].
We study a class of spectral multipliers ϕ(L) for the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck operator L arising from the Gaussian measure on R^n and find a sufficient condition for integrability of ϕ(L)f in terms of the admissible conical square function and a maximal function.
Let $X$ be a space of homogeneous type and let $L$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on $L^2(X)$ which satisfies a Gaussian estimate on its heat kernel. In this paper we prove a Hömander type spectral multiplier theorem for $L$ on the Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces associated to $L$. Our work not only recovers the boundedness of the spectral multipliers on $L^p$ spaces and Hardy spaces associated to $L$, but also is the first one which proves the boundedness of a general spectral theorem on Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces.
Let $X$ be a space of homogeneous type and let $L$ be an injective, non-negative, self-adjoint operator on $L^2(X)$ such that the semigroup generated by $-L$ fulfills Davies-Gaffney estimates of arbitrary order. We prove that the operator $F(L)$, initially defined on $H^1_L(X)\cap L^2(X)$, acts as a bounded linear operator on the Hardy space $H^1_L(X)$ associated with $L$ whenever $F$ is a bounded, sufficiently smooth function. Based on this result, together with interpolation, we establish Hörmander type spectral multiplier theorems on Lebesgue spaces for non-negative, self-adjoint operators …
Let $L$ be a non-negative self adjoint operator acting on $L^2(X)$ where $X$ is a space of homogeneous type. Assume that $L$ generates a holomorphic semigroup $e^{-tL}$ whose kernels $p_t(x,y)$ have Gaussian upper bounds but possess no regularity in variables $x$ and $y$. In this article, we study weighted $L^p$-norm inequalities for spectral multipliers of $L$. We show sharp weighted Hörmander-type spectral multiplier theorems follow from Gaussian heat kernel bounds and appropriate $L^2$ estimates of the kernels of the spectral multipliers. These results are applicable to spectral multipliers…
We obtain a general Marcinkiewicz-type multiplier theorem for mixed systems of strongly commuting operators $L=(L_1,...,L_d);$ where some of the operators in $L$ have only a holomorphic functional calculus, while others have additionally a Marcinkiewicz-type functional calculus. Moreover, we prove that specific Laplace transform type multipliers of the pair $(\mathcal{L},A)$ are of certain weak type $(1,1).$ Here $\mathcal{L}$ is the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator while $A$ is a non-negative operator having Gaussian bounds for its heat kernel. Our results include the Riesz transforms $A(\mathcal{…
We study the problem of L^p-boundedness (1 < p < \infty) of operators of the form m(L_1,...,L_n) for a commuting system of self-adjoint left-invariant differential operators L_1,...,L_n on a Lie group G of polynomial growth, which generate an algebra containing a weighted subcoercive operator. In particular, when G is a homogeneous group and L_1,...,L_n are homogeneous, we prove analogues of the Mihlin-Hörmander and Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorems.
This paper concerns harmonic analysis of the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck operator L on the Euclidean space. We examine the method of decomposing a spectral multiplier ϕ(L) into three parts according to the notion of admissibility, which quantifies the doubling behaviour of the underlying Gaussian measure γ. We prove that the above-mentioned admissible decomposition is bounded in L^p(γ) for 1 < p \leq 2 in a certain sense involving the Gaussian conical square function. The proof relates admissibility with E. Nelson's hypercontractivity theorem in a novel way.
Let $L$ be a non-negative self adjoint operator acting on $L^2(X)$ where $X$ is a space of homogeneous type. Assume that $L$ generates a holomorphic semigroup $e^{-tL}$ whose kernels $p_t(x,y)$ satisfy generalized $m$-th order Gaussian estimates. In this article, we study singular and dyadically supported spectral multipliers for abstract self-adjoint operators. We show that in this setting sharp spectral multiplier results follow from Plancherel or Stein-Tomas type estimates. These results are applicable to spectral multipliers for large classes of operators including $m$-th order elliptic di…
We study the fractal uncertainty principle in the joint time-frequency representation, and we prove a version for the Short-Time Fourier transform with Gaussian window on the modulation spaces. This can equivalently be formulated in terms of projection operators on the Bargmann-Fock spaces of entire functions. Specifically for signals in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, we obtain norm estimates of Daubechies' time-frequency localization operator localizing on porous sets. The proof is based on the maximal Nyquist density of such sets, and for multidimensional Cantor iterates we derive explicit upper bound…
Let L be a non-negative, self-adjoint operator on L^2(Ω), where (Ω, d μ) is a space of homogeneous type. Assume that the semigroup {T_t}_{t>0} generated by -L satisfies Gaussian bounds, or more generally Davies-Gaffney estimates. We say that f belongs to the Hardy space H^1_L if the square function S_h f(x)=(\iint_{Γ(x)} |t^2 L e^{-t^2 L} f(y)|^2 \frac{dμ(y)}{μ(B_d(x,t))} \frac{dt}{t})^{1/2} belongs to L^1(Ω, dμ), where Γ(x)={(y,t) \in Ω\times (0,\infty): d(x,y)<t}. We prove spectral multiplier theorems for L on H^1_L.
We prove weighted restriction type estimates for Grushin operators. These estimates are then used to prove sharp spectral multiplier theorems as well as Bochner-Riesz summability results with sharp exponent.
This thesis is devoted to the study of multivariate (joint) spectral multipliers for systems of strongly commuting non-negative self-adjoint operators, $L=(L_1,\ldots,L_d),$ on $L^2(X,ν),$ where $(X,ν)$ is a measure space. By strong commutativity we mean that the operators $L_r,$ $r=1,\ldots,d,$ admit a joint spectral resolution $E(λ).$ In that case, for a bounded function $m\colon [0,\infty)^d\to \mathbb{C},$ the multiplier operator $m(L)$ is defined on $L^2(X,ν)$ by $$m(L)=\int_{[0,\infty)^d}m(λ)dE(λ).$$ By spectral theory, $m(L)$ is then bounded on $L^2(X,ν).$ The purpose of the dissertatio…
We propose a framework for bilinear multiplier operators defined via the (bivariate) spectral theorem. Under this framework we prove Coifman-Meyer type multiplier theorems and fractional Leibniz rules. Our theory applies to bilinear multipliers associated with the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb{Z}^d,$ general bi-radial bilinear Dunkl multipliers, and to bilinear multipliers associated with the Jacobi expansions.
Given a $2$-step stratified group which does not satisfy a slight strengthening of the Moore-Wolf condition, a sub-Laplacian $\mathcal{L}$ and a family $\mathcal{T}$ of elements of the derived algebra, we study the convolution kernels associated with the operators of the form $m(\mathcal{L}, -i \mathcal{T})$. Under suitable conditions, we prove that: i) if the convolution kernel of the operator $m(\mathcal{L},-i \mathcal{T})$ belongs to $L^1$, then $m$ equals almost everywhere a continuous function vanishing at $\infty$ (`Riemann-Lebesgue lemma'); ii) if the convolution kernel of the operator …
We establish endpoint estimates for a class of oscillating spectral multipliers on Lie groups of Heisenberg type. The analysis follows an earlier argument due to the second and fourth author but requires the detailed analysis of the wave equation on these groups due to Müller and Seeger. We highlight and develop the connection between sharp bounds for oscillating multipliers and the problem of determining the minimal amount of smoothness required for Mihlin-Hörmander multipliers, a problem that was solved for groups of Heisenberg type but remains open for other groups.
Let $L$ be the homogeneous sublaplacian on the 6-dimensional free 2-step nilpotent group $N_{3,2}$ on 3 generators. We prove a theorem of Mihlin-Hörmander type for the functional calculus of $L$, where the order of differentiability $s > 6/2$ is required on the multiplier.
Let $\mathbb B_n$ be the open unit ball in $\mathbb C^n$. We characterize the spectra of pointwise multipliers $M_u$ acting on Banach spaces of analytic functions on $\mathbb B_n$ satisfying some general conditions. These spaces include Bergman-Sobolev spaces $A^p_{α,β}$, Bloch-type spaces $\mathcal B_α$, weighted Hardy spaces $H^p_w$ with Muckenhoupt weights and Hardy-Sobolev Hilbert spaces $H^2_β$. Moreover, we describe the essential spectra of multipliers in most of the aforementioned spaces, in particular, in those spaces for which the set of multipliers is a subset of the ball algebra.
We consider the abstract non-negative self-adjoint operator $L$ acting on $L^2(X)$ which satisfies Davies-Gaffney estimates and the corresponding Hardy spaces $H^p_L(X)$. We assume that doubling condition holds for the metric measure space $X$. We show that a sharp Hörmander-type spectral multiplier theorem on $H^p_L(X)$ follows from restriction type estimates and the Davies-Gaffney estimates. We also describe the sharp result for the boundedness of Bochner-Riesz means on $H^p_L(X)$.
The unit sphere $\mathbb{S}$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ is equipped with the tangential Cauchy-Riemann complex and the associated Laplacian $\Box_b$. We prove a Hörmander spectral multiplier theorem for $\Box_b$ with critical index $n-1/2$, that is, half the topological dimension of $\mathbb{S}$. Our proof is mainly based on representation theory and on a detailed analysis of the spaces of differential forms on $\mathbb{S}$.
We prove an $L^p$ spectral multiplier theorem for functions of the $K$-invariant sublaplacian $L$ acting on the space of functions of fixed $K$-type on the group $SL(2,\mathbb{R}).$ As an application we compute the joint $L^p(SL(2,\mathbb{R}))$ spectrum of $L$ and the derivative along $K$.
We consider abstract non-negative self-adjoint operators on $L^2(X)$ which satisfy the finite speed propagation property for the corresponding wave equation. For such operators we introduce a restriction type condition which in the case of the standard Laplace operator is equivalent to $(p,2)$ restriction estimate of Stein and Tomas. Next we show that in the considered abstract setting our restriction type condition implies sharp spectral multipliers and endpoint estimates for the Bochner-Riesz summability. We also observe that this restriction estimate holds for operators satisfying dispersiv…
Given a graded group $G$ and commuting, formally self-adjoint, left-invariant, homogeneous differential operators $\mathcal{L}_1,\dots, \mathcal{L}_n$ on $G$, one of which is Rockland, we study the convolution operators $m(\mathcal{L}_1,\dots, \mathcal{L}_n)$ and their convolution kernels, with particular reference to the case in which $G$ is abelian and $n=1$, and the case in which $G$ is a $2$-step stratified group which satisfies a slight strengthening of the Moore-Wolf condition and $\mathcal{L}_1,\dots,\mathcal{L}_n$ are either sub-Laplacians or central elements of the Lie algebra of $G$.…
We consider operators acting on a UMD Banach lattice $X$ that have the same algebraic structure as the position and momentum operators associated with the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12Δ+ \frac12|x|^{2} $ acting on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. More precisely, we consider abstract harmonic oscillators of the form $\frac12 \sum _{j=1} ^{d}(A_{j}^{2}+B_{j}^{2})$ for tuples of operators $A=(A_{j})_{j=1} ^{d}$ and $B=(B_{k})_{k=1} ^{d}$, where $iA_j$ and $iB_k$ are assumed to generate $C_{0}$ groups and to satisfy the canonical commutator relations. We prove functional calculus results for these abstrac…
In this paper we investigate Besov spaces on graded Lie groups. We prove a Nikolskii type inequality (or the Reverse Hölder inequality) on graded Lie groups and as consequence we obtain embeddings of Besov spaces. We prove a version of the Littlewood-Paley theorem on graded Lie groups. The results are applied to obtain embedding properties of Besov spaces and multiplier theorems for both spectral and Fourier multipliers in Besov spaces on graded Lie groups. In particular, we give a number of sufficient conditions for the boundedness of Fourier multipliers in Besov spaces.
On $\mathbb{R}^d_+$, endowed with the Laguerre probability measure $μ_α$, we define a Hodge-Laguerre operator $\mathbb{L}_α=δδ^*+δ^* δ$ acting on differential forms. Here $δ$ is the Laguerre exterior differentiation operator, defined as the classical exterior differential, except that the partial derivatives $\partial_{x_i}$ are replaced by the "Laguerre derivatives" $\sqrt{x_i}\partial_{x_i}$, and $δ^*$ is the adjoint of $δ$ with respect to inner product on forms defined by the Euclidean structure and the Laguerre measure $μ_α$. We prove dimension-free bounds on $L^p$, $1<p<\infty$, for the R…
From a theorem of Christ and Mauceri and Meda it follows that, for a homogeneous sublaplacian $L$ on a $2$-step stratified group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, an operator of the form $F(L)$ is of weak type $(1,1)$ and bounded on $L^p(G)$ for $1 < p < \infty$ if the spectral multiplier $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > Q/2$, where $Q = \dim \mathfrak{g} + \dim[\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}]$ is the homogeneous dimension of $G$. Here we show that the condition can be pushed down to $s > d/2$, where $d = \dim \mathfrak{g}$ is the topological dimension of $G$, p…
We study the operators T on the weighted space L^p commuting either with the right translations St or left translations P^+S_{-t} and we establish the existence of a symbol of T. We characterize completely the spectrum of St. We obtain a similar result for the spectrum of P^+S_{-t} and some spectral results for the bounded operators commuting with (St), t>0 or with (P^+St), t<0.
We prove spectral multiplier theorems for Hörmander classes $\mathcal{H}^α\_p$ for 0-sectorial operators A on Banach spaces assuming a bounded $H^\infty(Σ\_σ)$ calculus for some $σ\in (0,π)$ and norm and certain R-bounds on one of the following families of operators: the semigroup $e^{--zA}$ on $\mathbb{C}\_+$, the wave operators $e^{isA}$ for $s \in \mathbb{R}$, the resolvent $(λ-- A)^{-1}$ on $\mathbb{C} \backslash \mathbb{R}$, the imaginary powers $A^{it}$ for $t \in \mathbb{R}$ or the Bochner-Riesz means $(1-A/u)^α\_+$ for $u > 0.$ In contrast to the existing literature we neither assume t…
This note gives a wide-ranging update on the multiplier theorems by Akylzhanov and the second author [J. Funct. Anal., 278 (2020), 108324]. The proofs of the latter crucially rely on $L^p$-$L^q$ norm estimates for spectral projectors of left-invariant weighted subcoercive operators on unimodular Lie groups, such as Laplacians, sub-Laplacians and Rockland operators. By relating spectral projectors to heat kernels, explicit estimates of the $L^p$-$L^q$ norms can be immediately exploited for a much wider range of (connected unimodular) Lie groups and operators than previously known. The compariso…
In this paper we complete the investigation of scaling limits of the odometer in divisible sandpiles on $d$-dimensional tori generalising the works Chiarini et al. (2018), Cipriani et al. (2017, 2018). Relaxing the assumption of independence of the weights of the divisible sandpile, we generate generalised Gaussian fields in the limit by specifying the Fourier multiplier of their covariance kernel. In particular, using a Fourier multiplier approach, we can recover fractional Gaussian fields of the form $(-Δ)^{-(1+s)} W$ for $s>0$ and $W$ a spatial white noise on the $d$-dimensional unit torus.
Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a sub-Laplacian on a connected Lie group $G$ of polynomial growth. It is well known that, if $F : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ is in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})$, then the convolution kernel $\mathcal{K}_{F(\mathcal{L})}$ of the operator $F(\mathcal{L})$ is in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(G)$. Here we prove a sort of converse implication for a class of groups $G$ including all solvable noncompact groups of polynomial growth. We also discuss the problem whether integrability of $\mathcal{K}_{F(\mathcal{L})}$ implies continuity of $F$.
We prove that the existence of a Mihlin-Hörmander functional calculus for an operator $L$ implies the boundedness on $L^p$ of both the maximal operators and the continuous square functions build on spectral multipliers of $L.$ The considered multiplier functions are finitely smooth and satisfy an integral condition at infinity. In particular multipliers of compact support are admitted.
We investigate Fourier multipliers with smooth symbols defined over locally compact Hausdorff groups. Our main results in this paper establish new Hörmander-Mikhlin criteria for spectral and non-spectral multipliers. The key novelties which shape our approach are three. First, we control a broad class of Fourier multipliers by certain maximal operators in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. This general principle ---exploited in Euclidean harmonic analysis during the last 40 years--- is of independent interest and might admit further applications. Second, we replace the formerly used cocycle dimensio…
Let $G$ be a $2$-step stratified group of topological dimension $d$ and homogeneous dimension $Q$. Let $L$ be a homogeneous sub-Laplacian on $G$. By a theorem due to Christ and to Mauceri and Meda, an operator of the form $F(L)$ is of weak type $(1,1)$ and bounded on $L^p(G)$ for all $p \in (1,\infty)$ whenever the multiplier $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > Q/2$. It is known that, for several $2$-step groups and sub-Laplacians, the threshold $Q/2$ in the smoothness condition is not sharp and in many cases it is possible to push it down to $d/2$. Here we show …
Let $A$ be a $0$-sectorial operator with a bounded $H^\infty(Σ\_σ)$-calculus for some $σ\in (0,π),$ e.g. a Laplace type operator on $L^p(Ω),\: 1 < p < \infty,$ where $Ω$ is a manifold or a graph. We show that $A$ has a H{ö}rmander functional calculus if and only if certain operator families derived from the resolvent $(λ- A)^{-1},$ the semigroup $e^{-zA},$ the wave operators $e^{itA}$ or the imaginary powers $A^{it}$ of $A$ are $R$-bounded in an $L^2$-averaged sense. If $X$ is an $L^p(Ω)$ space with $1 \leq p < \infty,$ $R$-boundedness reduces to well-known estimates of square sums.
Consider a second order, strongly elliptic negative semidefinite differential operator $L$ (maybe a system) on a compact Riemannian manifold $\overline{M}$ with smooth boundary, where the domain of $L$ is defined by a coercive boundary condition. Classically known results, and also recent work in \cite{DOS} and \cite{DM} establish sufficient conditions for $L^\infty-\text{BMO}_L$ continuity of $φ(\sqrt{A})$, where $φ\in S^0_1(\mathbb{R})$, and $A$ is a suitable elliptic operator. Using a variant of the Cheeger-Gromov-Taylor functional calculus due to \cite{MMV}, and short time bounds on the in…
Let $L$ be a homogeneous sublaplacian on a 2-step stratified Lie group $G$ of topological dimension $d$ and homogeneous dimension $Q$. By a theorem due to Christ and to Mauceri and Meda, an operator of the form $F(L)$ is bounded on $L^p$ for $1 < p < \infty$ if $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > Q/2$. Under suitable assumptions on $G$ and $L$, here we show that a smoothness condition of order $s > d/2$ is sufficient. This extends to a larger class of 2-step groups the results for the Heisenberg and related groups by Müller and Stein and by Hebisch, and for the f…
Consider the multidimensional Bessel operator $$B f(x) = -\sum_{j=1}^N \left(\partial_j^2 f(x) +\frac{α_j}{x_j} \partial_j f(x)\right), \quad x\in(0,\infty)^N. $$ Let $d = \sum_{j=1}^N \max(1,α_j+1)$ be the homogeneous dimension of the space $(0,\infty)^N$ equipped with the measure $x_1^{α_1}... x_N^{α_N} dx_1...dx_N$. In the general case $α_1,...,α_N >-1$ we prove multiplier theorems for spectral multipliers $m(B)$ on $L^{1,\infty}$ and the Hardy space $H^1$. We assume that $m$ satisfies the classical Hörmander condition $$\sup_{t>0} \left||η(\cdot) m(t\cdot)\right||_{W^{2,β}(\mathbb{R})}<\in…
In this note we study pseudo-multipliers associated to the harmonic oscillator (also called Hermite multipliers) belonging to Schatten classes on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We also investigate the spectral trace of these operators.
For an operator generating a group on $L^p$ spaces transference results give bounds on the Phillips functional calculus also known as spectral multiplier estimates. In this paper we consider specific group generators which are abstraction of first order differential operators and prove similar spectral multiplier estimates assuming only that the group is bounded on $L^2$ rather than $L^p$. We also prove an R-bounded Hörmander calculus result by assuming an abstract Sobolev embedding property and show that the square of a perturbed Hodge-Dirac operator has such calculus.
