We derive an algorithm to rigorously compute and verify Maass cusp forms of squarefree level and trivial character. The main tool we use is an explicit version of the Selberg trace formula with Hecke operators due to Strömbergsson. We use this algorithm to compute several thousand Maass forms for a range of levels and use this data to obtain numerical evidence towards various conjectures.
This work contains a proof of a non-trivial explicit quantitative bound in the eigenvalue aspect for the sup-norm of a SL(3,Z) Hecke-Maass cusp form restricted to a compact set.
Let $f$ be a Hecke--Maass cuspidal newform of square-free level $N$ and Laplacian eigenvalue $λ$. It is shown that $\pnorm{f}_\infty \ll_{λ,ε} N^{-1/6}+ε} \pnorm{f}_2$ for any $ε>0$.
In this paper, we define and discuss Eichler integrals for Maass cusp forms of half-integral weight on the full modular group. We discuss nearly periodic functions associated to the Eichler integrals, introduce period functions for such Maass cusp forms, and show that the nearly periodic functions and the period functions are closely related. Those functions are extensions of the periodic functions and period functions for Maass cusp forms of weight 0 on the full modular group introduced by Lewis and Zagier.
In this paper we describe a characterization for the Maass space associated with the paramodular group of degree $2$ and squarefree level $N$. As an application we show that the Maass space is invariant under all Hecke operators. As a consequence we conclude that the associated Siegel-Eisenstein series belongs to the Maass space.
We introduce a new trace formula of Kuznetsov type involving the central standard L-values and the Whittaker periods of cuspidal automorphic representations of PGL_n(Q) which are spherical at the archimedean place. As an application, we show a simultaneous non-vanishing of standard L-values at n-1 points on the critical strip for infinitely many Hecke-Maass cuspidal newforms.
We present a method for certifying the existence of an arbitrary Maass cusp form for any level and character. This is accomplished by producing a bound on the difference between the $Δ$-eigenvalue of an authentic Maass cusp form and a purported approximation of a $Δ$-eigenvalue, arrived at by any means. We apply this method to a proposed non-CM level 5 form with quadratic character, to present the first certified $Δ$-eigenvalue of such a form. This work generalises the method for certifying level 1 forms presented by Booker, Strömbergsson and Venkatesh, and is motivated by the production of pu…
We prove an equidistribution result for the Satake parameters of Maass cusp forms on $GL_3$ with respect to the $p$-adic Plancherel measure by using an application of the Kuznetsov trace formula. The techniques developed in this paper deal with the removal of arithmetic weight $L(1,F,Ad)^{-1}$ in the Kuznetsov trace formula on $GL_3$.
In this work we prove a prime number type theorem involving the normalised Fourier coefficients of holomorphic and Maass cusp forms, using the classical circle method. A key point is in a recent paper of Fouvry and Ganguly, based on Hoffstein-Ramakrishnan's result about the non-existence of the Siegel zeros for $GL(2)$ $L$-functions, which allows us to improve preceding estimates.
We consider sign changes of Fourier coefficients of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb Z)$. When the underlying form is self-dual, we show that there are $\gg_\varepsilon X^{5/6-\varepsilon}$ sign changes among the coefficients $\{A(m,1)\}_{m\leq X}$ and that there is a positive proportion of sign changes for many self-dual forms. Similar result concerning the positive proportion of sign changes also hold for the real-valued coefficients $A(m,m)$ for generic $\mathrm{GL}_3$ cusp forms, a result which is based on a new effective Sato-Tate type theorem for a family of $\…
We explicitly construct cusp forms on the orthogonal group of signature $(1,8n+1)$ for an arbitrary natural number $n$ as liftings from Maass cusp forms of level one. In our previous works, the fundamental tool to show the automorphy of the lifting was the converse theorem by Maass. In this paper, we use the Fourier expansion of the theta lifts by Borcherds instead. We also study cuspidal representations generated by such cusp forms and show that they are irreducible and that all of their non-archimedean local components are non-tempered while the archimedean component is tempered, if the Maas…
Let $f$ be a Hecke-Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with Laplace eigenvalue $λ_f(Δ)=1/4+μ^2$ and let $λ_f(n)$ be its $n$-th normalized Fourier coefficient. It is proved that, uniformly in $α, β\in \mathbb{R}$, $$ \sum_{n \leq X}λ_f(n)e\left(αn^2+βn\right) \ll X^{7/8+\varepsilon}λ_f(Δ)^{1/2+\varepsilon}, $$ where the implied constant depends only on $\varepsilon$. We also consider the summation function of $λ_f(n)$ and under the Ramanujan conjecture we are able to prove $$ \sum_{n \leq X}λ_f(n)\ll X^{1/3+\varepsilon}λ_f(Δ)^{4/9+\varepsilon} $$ with the implied constant depending only …
Let $f$ be a primitive Maass cusp form for a congruence subgroup $Γ_0(D) \subset $ SL($2,\mathbb{Z}$) and $λ_f(n)$ its $n$-th Fourier coefficient. In this paper it is shown that with knowledge of only finitely many $λ_f(n)$ one can often solve for the level $D$, and in some cases, estimate the Laplace eigenvalue to arbitrarily high precision. This is done by analyzing the resonance and rapid decay of smoothly weighted sums of $λ_f(n)e(αn^β)$ for $X \leq n \leq 2X$ and any choice of $α\in \mathbb{R}$, and $β>0$. The methods include the Voronoi summation formula, asymptotic expansions of Bessel …
We estimate the sums \[ \sum_{c\leq x} \frac{S(m,n,c,χ)}{c}, \] where the $S(m,n,c,χ)$ are Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight on the modular group. Our estimates are uniform in $m$, $n$, and $x$ in analogy with Sarnak and Tsimerman's improvement of Kuznetsov's bound for the ordinary Kloosterman sums. Among other things this requires us to develop mean value estimates for coefficients of Maass cusp forms of weight $1/2$ and uniform estimates for $K$-Bessel integral transforms. As an application, we obtain an improved estimate for the classical problem of estimating the size of the error t…
We apply techniques from harmonic analysis to study the $L^p$ norms of Maass forms of varying level on a quaternion division algebra. Our first result gives a candidate for the local bound for the sup norm in terms of the level, which is new when the level is not squarefree. The second result is a bound for $L^p$ norms in the level aspect that is analogous to Sogge's theorem on $L^p$ norms of Laplace eigenfunctions.
In this article, we obtain transformation formulas analogous to the identity of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood in the setting of primitive Maass cusp form over the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$ and also provide an equivalent criterion of the grand Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-function associated to the primitive Maass cusp form over $Γ_0(N)$.
For nonuniform cofinite Fuchsian groups $Γ$ which satisfy a certain additional geometric condition, we show that the Maass cusp forms for $Γ$ are isomorphic to 1-eigenfunctions of a finite-term transfer operator. The isomorphism is constructive.
In 2006, in a paper published in Compositio, titled "Bounds on canonical Green's functions", J. Jorgenson and J. Kramer proved a certain key identity which relates the two natural metrics, namely the hyperbolic metric and the canonical metric defined on a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface. In this article, we extend this identity to product of noncompact hyperbolic Riemann orbisurfaces of finite volume, which can be realized as a quotient space of the action of a Fuchsian subgroup of first kind on the hyperbolic upper half plane.
The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that the behavior of zeros of a family of $L$-functions near the central point (as the conductors tend to zero) agree with the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group (as the matrix size tends to infinity). Using the Petersson formula, Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak \cite{ILS} proved that the behavior of zeros near the central point of holomorphic cusp forms agree with the behavior of eigenvalues of orthogonal matrices for suitably restricted test functions. We prove a similar result for level 1 cuspidal Maass forms, the other natural fami…
We prove that a Siegel cusp form of degree 2 for the full modular group is determined by its set of Fourier coefficients a(S) with 4 det(S) ranging over odd squarefree integers. As a key step to our result, we also prove that a classical cusp form of half-integral weight and level 4N, with N odd and squarefree, is determined by its set of Fourier coefficients a(d) with d ranging over odd squarefree integers, a result that was previously known only for Hecke eigenforms.
We compute the space $S_2(K(N))$ of weight $2$ Siegel paramodular cusp forms of squarefree level $N<300$. In conformance with the paramodular conjecture of A. Brumer and K. Kramer, the space is only the additive (Gritsenko) lift space of the Jacobi cusp form space $J_{2,N}^{\text{cusp}}$ except for $N=249,295$, when it further contains one nonlift newform. For these two values of $N$, the Hasse-Weil $p$-Euler factors of a relevant abelian surface match the spin $p$-Euler factors of the nonlift newform for the first two primes $p\nmid N$.
In this paper we define a new type of modular object and construct explicit examples of such functions. Our functions are closely related to cusp forms constructed by Zagier which played an important role in the construction by Kohnen and Zagier of a kernel function for the Shimura and Shintani lifts between half-integral and integral weight cusp forms. Although our functions share many properties in common with harmonic weak Maass forms, they also have some properties which strikingly contrast those exhibited by harmonic weak Maass forms. As a first application of the new theory developed in …
We determine the size of spaces of higher order Maass forms of even weight for cofinite discrete subgroups of PSL(2,R) with cusps. If exponential growth at the cusps is allowed, the spaces of Maass forms of a given order are as large as algebraic constrictions allow. We show the analogous statement for the spaces of holomorphic forms. For functions on the universal covering group of PSL(2,R) we introduce the concept of generalized weight. For the resulting spaces of higher order Maass forms with even generalized weight we show that the size is maximal.
We show that if a positive integer $q$ has $s(q)$ odd prime divisors $p$ for which $p^2$ divides $q$, then a positive proportion of the Laplacian eigenvalues of Maass newforms of weight $0$, level $q$, and principal character occur with multiplicity at least $2^{s(q)}$. Consequently, the new part of the cuspidal spectrum of the Laplacian on $Γ_0(q) \backslash \mathbb{H}$ cannot be simple for any odd non-squarefree integer $q$. This generalises work of Stromberg, who proved this for $q = 9$ by different methods.
In this paper, considering the Eichler-Shimura cohomology theory for Jacobi forms, we study connections between harmonic Maass-Jacobi forms and Jacobi integrals. As an application we study a pairing between two Jacobi integrals, which is defined by special values of partial $L$-functions of skew-holomorphic Jacobi cusp forms. We obtain connections between this pairing and the Petersson inner product for skew-holomorphic Jacobi cusp forms. This result can be considered as analogue of Haberland formula of elliptic modular forms for Jacobi forms.
We investigate the numerical computation of Maass cusp forms for the modular group corresponding to large eigenvalues. We present Fourier coefficients of two cusp forms whose eigenvalues exceed r=40000. These eigenvalues are the largest that have so far been found in the case of the modular group. They are larger than the 130millionth eigenvalue.
A Shintani-Katok-Sarnak type correspondence for Maass cusp forms of level $N$ is shown to be derived from analytic properties of prehomogeneous zeta functions whose coefficients involve periods of Maass forms.
In this paper, we study the Mellin transform of the weight 2 level $N$ polar harmonic Maass form $H_{N,z}^*(τ)$, and analyze this (generalized) $L$-function as $\mathrm{Im}(z)\to \infty$. On the way, we also calculate the Fourier expansion of $H_{N,z}^*(τ)$ at arbitrary cusps of $Γ_0(N)$, and we give a functional equation and factorization into local factors of the $L$-function for the weight 2 level $N$ Eisenstein series at the cusps $i\infty$ and $0$.
Using special polynomials introduced by Hikami and the second author in their study of torus knots, we construct classes of $q$-hypergeometric series lying in the Habiro ring. These give rise to new families of quantum modular forms, and their Fourier coefficients encode distinguished Maass cusp forms. The cuspidality of these Maass waveforms is proven by making use of the Habiro ring representations of the associated quantum modular forms. Thus, we provide an example of using the $q$-hypergeometric structure of associated series to establish modularity properties which are otherwise non-obvio…
We compute the Cheeger constants of a collection of hyperbolic surfaces corresponding to maximal non-compact arithmetic Fuchsian groups, and to subgroups which are the rotation subgroup of maximal reflection groups. The Cheeger constants are geometric quantities, but relate to the smallest eigenvalues of Maass cusp forms. From geometrical considerations, we find evidence for the existence of small eigenvalues. We search for these small eigenvalues and compute the corresponding Maass cusp forms numerically.
Conditionally on the Generalized Lindelöf Hypothesis, we obtain an asymptotic for the fourth moment of Hecke Maass cusp forms of large Laplacian eigenvalue for the full modular group. This lends support to the Random Wave Conjecture.
We address the problem of identifying a Hecke-Maass cusp form $f$ of full level from the central values of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions $L(1/2,f\otimes h)$ where $h$ runs through the set of Hecke-Maass eigenforms of full level. We prove a quantitative result in this direction.
Suppose $π_1$ and $π_2$ are two Hecke-Maass cusp forms for $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ such that for all primitive character $χ$ we have $$ L(\tfrac{1}{2},π_1\otimesχ)=L(\tfrac{1}{2},π_2\otimesχ). $$ Then we show that $π_1=π_2$.
Let k and n be positive even integers. For a cuspidal Hecke eigenform h in the Kohnen plus space of weight k-n/2+1/2, let f be the corresponding primitive form of weight 2k-n for SL(2,Z) under the Shimura correspondence, and I(h) the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of h to the space of cusp forms of weight k of genus n. Moreover, let FJ(I(h),1) be the first Fourier-Jacobi coefficient of I(h) and s(FJ(I(h),1)) be the cusp form in the generalized Kohnen plus space of weight k-1/2 corresponding to FJ(I(h),1) under the Ibukiyama isomorphism. We then give an explicit formula for the Koecher-Maass series o…
By a transfer operator approach to Maass cusp forms and the Selberg zeta function for cofinite Hecke triangle groups, M. Möller and the author found a factorization of the Selberg zeta function into a product of Fredholm determinants of transfer-operator-like families: $Z(s) = \det(1-\mc L_s^+)\det(1-\mc L_s^-)$. In this article we show that the operator families $\mc L_s^\pm$ arise as families of transfer operators for the triangle groups underlying the Hecke triangle groups, and that for $s\in\C$, $\Rea s=\tfrac12$, the operator $\mc L_s^+$ (resp. $\mc L_s^-$) has a 1-eigenfunction if and on…
While investigating the Doi-Naganuma lift, Zagier defined integral weight cusp forms $f_D$ which are naturally defined in terms of binary quadratic forms of discriminant $D$. It was later determined by Kohnen and Zagier that the generating function for the $f_D$ is a half-integral weight cusp form. A natural preimage of $f_D$ under a differential operator at the heart of the theory of harmonic weak Maass forms was determined by the first two authors and Kohnen. In this paper, we consider the modularity properties of the generating function of these preimages. We prove that although the generat…
Let $f$ be a normalized Hecke-Maass cusp form of weight zero for the group $SL_2(\mathbb Z)$. This article presents several quantitative results about the distribution of Hecke eigenvalues of $f$. Applications to the $Ω_{\pm}$-results for the Hecke eigenvalues of $f$ and its symmetric square sym$^2(f)$ are also given.
Let $L$ be a degree-$2$ $L$-function associated to a Maass cusp form. We explore an algorithm that evaluates $t$ values of $L$ on the critical line in time $O(t^{1+\varepsilon})$. We use this algorithm to rigorously compute an abundance of consecutive zeros and investigate their distribution.
The correspondence principle in physics between quantum mechanics and classical mechanics suggests deep relations between spectral and geometric entities of Riemannian manifolds. We survey---in a way intended to be accessible to a wide audience of mathematicians---a mathematically rigorous instance of such a relation that emerged in recent years, showing a dynamical interpretation of certain Laplace eigenfunctions of hyperbolic surfaces.
The space of polyharmonic Maass forms was introduced by Lagarias-Rhoades, recently. They constructed its basis from the Taylor coefficients of the real analytic Eisenstein series. In this paper, we introduce polyharmonic weak Maass forms, that is, we relax the moderate growth condition at cusp, and we construct a basis as a generalization of Lagarias-Rhoades' works. As a corollary, we can obtain a preimage of an arbitrary polyharmonic weak Maass form under the xi-operator.
This is the second of two coupled papers estimating the mean values of multiplicative functions, of unknown support, on arithmetic progressions with large differences. Applications are made to the study of primes in arithmetic progression and to the Fourier coefficients of automorphic cusp forms.
Using that the overpartition rank function is the holomorphic part of a harmonic Maass form, we deduce formulas for the rank differences modulo 7. To do so we make improvements on the current state of the overpartition rank function in terms of harmonic Maass forms by giving simple formulas for the transformations under $\mbox{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ as well as formulas for orders at cusps.
In this paper, we construct Shintani lifts from integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms to half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. Although defined by different methods, these coincide with the classical Shintani lifts when restricted to the space of cusp forms. As a side effect, this gives the coefficients of the classical Shintani lifts as new cycle integrals. This yields new formulas for the $L$-values of Hecke eigenforms. When restricted to the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms orthogonal to cusp forms, the Shintani lifts introduce a definition of weakly hol…
We prove a quantitative statement of the quantum ergodicity for Hecke--Maass cusp forms on the modular surface. As an application of our result, along a density $1$ subsequence of even Hecke--Maass cusp forms, we obtain a sharp lower bound for the $L^2$-norm of the restriction to a fixed compact geodesic segment of $η=\{iy~:~y>0\} \subset \mathbb{H}$. We also obtain an upper bound of $O_ε\left(t_ϕ^{3/8+ε}\right)$ for the $L^\infty$ norm along a density $1$ subsequence of Hecke--Maass cusp forms; for such forms, this is an improvement over the upper bound of $O_ε\left(t_ϕ^{5/12+ε}\right)$ given…
We study sums of Hecke eigenvalues of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb Z)$, with general $n\geq 3$, over certain short intervals under the assumption of the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis and a slightly stronger upper bound concerning the exponent towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture that is currently known. In particular, in this case we evaluate the second moment of the sums in question asymptotically.
We construct a family of harmonic Maass forms of polynomial growth of any level corresponding to any cusp whose shadows are Eisenstein series of integral weight. We further consider Dirichlet series attached to a harmonic Maass form of polynomial growth, study its analytic properties, and prove an analogue of Weil's converse theorem.
We estimate short exponential sums weighted by the Fourier coefficients of a Maass form. This requires working out a certain transformation formula for non-linear exponential sums, which is of independent interest. We also discuss how the results depend on the growth of the Fourier coefficients in question. As a byproduct of these considerations, we can slightly extend the range of validity of a short exponential sum estimate for holomorphic cusp forms. The short estimates allow us to reduce smoothing errors. In particular, we prove an analogue of an approximate functional equation previously …
