The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that the behavior of zeros of a family of $L$-functions near the central point (as the conductors tend to zero) agree with the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group (as the matrix size tends to infinity). Using the Petersson formula, Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak \cite{ILS} proved that the behavior of zeros near the central point of holomorphic cusp forms agree with the behavior of eigenvalues of orthogonal matrices for suitably restricted test functions. We prove a similar result for level 1 cuspidal Maass forms, the other natural family of ${\rm GL}_2$ $L$-functions. We use the explicit formula to relate sums of our test function at scaled zeros to sums of the Fourier transform at the primes weighted by the $L$-function coefficients, and then use the Kuznetsov trace formula to average the Fourier coefficients over the family. There are numerous technical obstructions in handling the terms in the trace formula, which are surmounted through the use of smooth weight functions for the Maass eigenvalues and results on Kloosterman sums and Bessel and hyperbolic functions.
We introduce a new trace formula of Kuznetsov type involving the central standard L-values and the Whittaker periods of cuspidal automorphic representations of PGL_n(Q) which are spherical at the archimedean place. As an application, we show a simultaneous non-vanishing of standard L-values at n-1 points on the critical strip for infinitely many Hecke-Maass cuspidal newforms.
Let $f$ be a Hecke--Maass cuspidal newform of square-free level $N$ and Laplacian eigenvalue $λ$. It is shown that $\pnorm{f}_\infty \ll_{λ,ε} N^{-1/6}+ε} \pnorm{f}_2$ for any $ε>0$.
We study the $1$- or $2$-level density of families of $L$-functions for Hecke--Maass forms over an imaginary quadratic field $F$. For test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $\left(-\frac 32, \frac 32\right)$, we prove that the $1$-level density for Hecke--Maass forms over $F$ of square-free level $\mathfrak{q}$, as $\mathrm{N}(\mathfrak{q})$ tends to infinity, agrees with that of the orthogonal random matrix ensembles. For Hecke--Maass forms over $F$ of full level, we prove similar statements for the $1$- and $2$-level densities, as the Laplace eigenvalues tends to infinity.
We prove certain relations between Satake parameters of cuspidal representations of $\GL_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ at finite and archimedean places. Consequently, we show that the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture at a fixed prime $p\nmid N$ for \textit{non-exceptional} Maass forms of level $N$ implies the conjecture at $p$ for \textit{all} Maass forms of level $N$ and the Selberg's $1/4$-eigenvalue conjecture simultaneously. As an application, we improve Kim and Sarnak's $7/64$-bound towards the Satake parameters at all $p\nmid N$ for exceptional Maass forms.
Using special polynomials introduced by Hikami and the second author in their study of torus knots, we construct classes of $q$-hypergeometric series lying in the Habiro ring. These give rise to new families of quantum modular forms, and their Fourier coefficients encode distinguished Maass cusp forms. The cuspidality of these Maass waveforms is proven by making use of the Habiro ring representations of the associated quantum modular forms. Thus, we provide an example of using the $q$-hypergeometric structure of associated series to establish modularity properties which are otherwise non-obvio…
The Katz-Sarnak density conjecture states that the scaling limits of the distributions of zeros of families of automorphic $L$-functions agree with the scaling limits of eigenvalue distributions of classical subgroups of the unitary groups $U(N)$. This conjecture is often tested by way of computing particular statistics, such as the one-level density, which evaluates a test function with compactly supported Fourier transform at normalized zeros near the central point. Iwaniec, Luo, and Sarnak studied the one-level densities of cuspidal newforms of weight $k$ and level $N$. They showed in the l…
We establish the Sato-Tate equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues on average for families of Hecke--Maass cusp forms on SL(n,R)/SO(n). For each of the principal, symmetric square and exterior square L-functions we verify that the families are essentially cuspidal and deduce the level distribution with restricted support of the low-lying zeros. We also deduce average estimates toward Ramanujan.
We explicitly construct cusp forms on the orthogonal group of signature $(1,8n+1)$ for an arbitrary natural number $n$ as liftings from Maass cusp forms of level one. In our previous works, the fundamental tool to show the automorphy of the lifting was the converse theorem by Maass. In this paper, we use the Fourier expansion of the theta lifts by Borcherds instead. We also study cuspidal representations generated by such cusp forms and show that they are irreducible and that all of their non-archimedean local components are non-tempered while the archimedean component is tempered, if the Maas…
Let k and n be positive even integers. For a cuspidal Hecke eigenform h in the Kohnen plus space of weight k-n/2+1/2, let f be the corresponding primitive form of weight 2k-n for SL(2,Z) under the Shimura correspondence, and I(h) the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of h to the space of cusp forms of weight k of genus n. Moreover, let FJ(I(h),1) be the first Fourier-Jacobi coefficient of I(h) and s(FJ(I(h),1)) be the cusp form in the generalized Kohnen plus space of weight k-1/2 corresponding to FJ(I(h),1) under the Ibukiyama isomorphism. We then give an explicit formula for the Koecher-Maass series o…
Let pi be a cuspidal, automorphic representation of GSp(4) attached to a Siegel modular form of degree 2. We refine the method of Furusawa to obtain an integral representation for the degree-8 L-function L(s,pi x tau), where tau runs through certain cuspidal, automorphic representation of GL(2). Our calculations include the case of square-free level for the p-adic components of tau, and a wide class of archimedean types including Maass forms. As an application we obtain a special value result for L(s,pi x tau).
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ which satisfies certain reasonable assumptions such as integrality of Hecke polynomials, the existence of mod $\ell$ Galois representations attached to $π$. Under Langlands functoriality of exterior $m$-th power $\wedge^m(π)$, $m=2,...,[\frac n2]$, we will construct a unique Artin representation associated to $π$. As a corollary, we obtain that such a cuspidal representation of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ satisfies the Ramanujan conjecture. We also revisit our previous work on Artin representations associated t…
The aim of this paper is to carry out an explicit construction of CAP representations of GL(2) over a division quaternion algebra with discriminant two. We first construct cusp forms on such group explicitly by lifting from Maass cusp forms for the congruence subgroup of level 2. We show that this lifting is non-zero and Hecke-equivariant. This allows us to determine each local component of such a cuspidal representation. We then know that our cuspidal representations provide examples of CAP representations, and in fact, counterexamples of the Generalized Ramanujan conjecture.
The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that the behavior of zeros of a family of $L$-functions near the central point (as the conductors tend to zero) agrees with the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group (as the matrix size tends to infinity). Using the Petersson formula, Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak proved that the behavior of zeros near the central point of holomorphic cusp forms agrees with the behavior of eigenvalues of orthogonal matrices for suitably restricted test functions $ϕ$. We prove similar results for families of cuspidal Maass forms, the other natural family…
We present an explicit approach to the GL(3) Kuznetsov formula. As an application, for a restricted class of test functions, we obtain the low-lying zero densities for the following three families: cuspidal GL(3) Maass forms phi, the symmetric square family sym^2 phi on GL(6), and the adjoint family Ad phi on GL(8). Hence we can identify their symmetry types; they are: unitary, unitary, and symplectic, respectively.
Let $f$ be a cuspidal newform (holomorphic or Maass) of arbitrary level and nebentypus and denote by $λ_f(n)$ its $n$-th Hecke eigenvalue. Let $$ r(n)=\#\left\{(n_1,n_2)\in \mathbb{Z}^2:n_1^2+n_2^2=n\right\}. $$ In this paper, we study the shifted convolution sum $$ \mathcal{S}_h(X)=\sum_{n\leq X}λ_f(n+h)r(n), \qquad 1\leq h\leq X, $$ and establish uniform bounds with respect to the shift $h$ for $\mathcal{S}_h(X)$.
Let f be an L^2-normalized Hecke--Maass cuspidal newform of level N and Laplace eigenvalue λ. It is shown that |f|_\infty <<_{λ, ε} N^{-1/12 + ε} for any ε>0. The exponent is further improved in the case when N is not divisible by "small squares". Our work extends and generalizes previously known results in the special case of N squarefree.
Let $\mathbb{A}$ be the adele ring of a totally real algebraic number field $F$. We push forward an explicit computation of a relative trace formula for periods of automorphic forms along a split torus in $GL(2)$ from a square free level case done by Masao Tsuzuki, to an arbitrary level case. By using a relative trace formula, we study central values of automorphic $L$-functions for cuspidal automorphic representations of $GL(2, \mathbb{A})$ corresponding to Maass forms with arbitrary level.
We study fluctuations in the distribution of families of $p$-th Fourier coefficients $a_f(p)$ of normalised holomorphic Hecke eigenforms $f$ of weight $k$ with respect to $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ as $k \to \infty$ and primes $p \to \infty.$ These families are known to be equidistributed with respect to the Sato-Tate measure. We consider a fixed interval $I \subset [-2,2]$ and derive the variance of the number of $a_f(p)$'s lying in $I$ as $p \to \infty$ and $k \to \infty$ (at a suitably fast rate). The number of $a_f(p)$'s lying in $I$ is shown to asymptotically follow a Gaussian distribution when a…
This thesis contributes to the analytic theory of automorphic L-functions. We prove an approximate functional equation for the central value of the L-series attached to an irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of GL(m) over a number field. We investigate the decay rate of the cutoff function and its derivatives in terms of the analytic conductor introduced by Iwaniec and Sarnak. We also see that the truncation can be made uniformly explicit at the cost of an error term. The results extend to products of central values. We establish, via the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, a nontrivia…
The goal of this paper is to explain certain experimentally observed properties of the (cuspidal) spectrum and its associated automorphic forms (Maass waveforms) on the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(9)$. The first property is that the spectrum possesses multiplicities in the so-called new part, where it was previously believed to be simple. The second property is that the spectrum does not contain any "genuinely new" eigenvalues, in the sense that all eigenvalues of $Γ_{0}(9)$ appear in the spectrum of some congruence subgroup of lower level. The main theorem in this paper gives a precise decompo…
Let $π$ and $π_0$ be unitary cuspidal automorphic representations. We prove log-free zero density estimates for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions of the form $L(s,π\timesπ_0)$, where $π$ varies in a given family and $π_0$ is fixed. These estimates are unconditional in many cases of interest; they hold in full generality assuming an average form of the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. We consider applications of these estimates related to mass equidistribution for Hecke-Maass forms, the rarity of Landau-Siegel zeros of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, the Chebotarev density theorem, and $\ell$-torsion…
For a totally real number field $F$ and its adèle ring $\mathbb{A}_F$, let $π$ vary in the set of irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of ${\rm PGL}_2(\mathbb{A}_F)$ corresponding to primitive Hilbert modular forms of a fixed weight. Then, we determine the symmetry type of the one-level density of low-lying zeros of the symmetric power $L$-functions $L(s,{\rm Sym}^r(π))$ weighted by special values of symmetric square $L$-functions $L(\frac{z+1}{2},{\rm Sym}^2(π))$ at $z \in [0, 1]$ in the level aspect. If $0 < z \le 1$, our weighted density in the level aspect has the same symmetry…
Let $τ$ denote the divisor function, and $f$ be any multiplicative function that satisfies some mild hypotheses. We establish the asymptotic formula or non-trivial upper bound for the shifted convolution sum $\sum_{n \leq X}f(n)τ(n-1)$. We also derive several applications to multiplicative functions in the automorphic context, including the functions $λ_π(n), \,μ(n)λ_π(n)$ and $λ_ϕ(n)^l$. Here $λ_π(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Dirichlet coefficient of $\text{GL}_m$ automorphic $L$-function $L(s,π)$ for an automorphic irreducible cuspidal representation $π$, $λ_ϕ(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Fourier coeffi…
Classical Hecke operators on Maass forms are unitarely equivalent, up to a commuting phase, to completely positive maps on II$_1$ factors, associated to a pair of isomorphic subfactors, and an intertwining unitary. This representation is obtained through a quantized representation of the Hecke operators. in this representation, the Hecke operators act on the Berezin's quantization, deformation algebra of the fundamental domain of $\PSL(2,\Z)$ in the upper halfplane. The Hecke operators are inheriting from the ambient, non-commutative algebra on which they act, a rich structure of matrix inequa…
We prove explicit Harris-Kudla type formulas for triples of Maass forms, holomorphic forms, and combinations thereof, on the hyperbolic plane modulo congruence groups and co-compact lattices arising from Eichler orders of quaternion algebras. These formulas relate the central value of the corresponding Rankin triple product L-function to a squared trilinear period integral. Assuming subconvexity estimates for these L-values, we prove Quantum Unique Ergodicity on such quotients; the relevant Lindelof hypotheses imply a quantitative form of QUE, with an optimal rate. In connection with the Berry…
We investigate the large weight (k --> oo) limiting statistics for the low lying zeros of a GL(4) and a GL(6) family of L-functions, {L(s,phi x f): f in H_k(1)} and {L(s,phi times sym^2 f): f in H_k(1)}; here phi is a fixed even Hecke-Maass cusp form and H_k(1) is a Hecke eigenbasis for the space H_k(1) of holomorphic cusp forms of weight k for the full modular group. Katz and Sarnak conjecture that the behavior of zeros near the central point should be well modeled by the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group. By studying the 1- and 2-level densities, we find evidence of…
We investigate the moments of a smooth counting function of the zeros near the central point of L-functions of weight k cuspidal newforms of prime level N. We split by the sign of the functional equations and show that for test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in (-1/n, 1/n), as N --> oo the first n centered moments are Gaussian. By extending the support to (-1/n-1, 1/n-1), we see non-Gaussian behavior; in particular the odd centered moments are non-zero for such test functions. If we do not split by sign, we obtain Gaussian behavior for support in (-2/n, 2/n) if 2k >= n. The nth…
