Classical Hecke operators on Maass forms are unitarely equivalent, up to a commuting phase, to completely positive maps on II$_1$ factors, associated to a pair of isomorphic subfactors, and an intertwining unitary. This representation is obtained through a quantized representation of the Hecke operators. in this representation, the Hecke operators act on the Berezin's quantization, deformation algebra of the fundamental domain of $\PSL(2,\Z)$ in the upper halfplane. The Hecke operators are inheriting from the ambient, non-commutative algebra on which they act, a rich structure of matrix inequalities. Using this construction we obtain that, for every prime $p$, the essential spectrum of the classical Hecke operator $T_p$ is contained in the interval $[-2\sqrt p, 2\sqrt p]$, predicted by the Ramanujan Petersson conjectures. In particular, given an open interval containing $[-2\sqrt p, 2\sqrt p]$, there are at most a finite number of possible exceptional eigenvalues lying outside this interval. The main tool for obtaining this representation of the Hecke operators (unitarely equivalent to the classical representation, up to commuting phase) is a Schurr type, positive "square root" of the state on $\PGL(2,\Q)$, measuring the displacement of fundamental domain by translations in $\PGL(2,\Q)$. The "square root" is obtained from the matrix coefficients of the discrete series representations of $\PSL(2,\R)$ restricted to $\PGL(2, \Q)$. The methods in this paper may also be applied to any finite index, modular subgroup $Γ_0(p^n)$, $n\geq 1$, of $\PSL(2,\Z)$. In this case the essential norm of the Hecke operator is equal to the norm of the corresponding convolution operator on the cosets Hilbert space $\ell^2((Γ_0(p^n))\backslash \PSL(2,\Z[1/p])$.
Let $G$ be a discrete countable group, and let $Γ$ be an almost normal subgroup. In this paper we investigate the classification of (projective) unitary representations $π$ of $G$ into the unitary group of the Hilbert space $l^2(Γ)$ that extend the left regular representation of $Γ$. Representations with this property are obtained by restricting to $G$ square integrable representations of a larger semisimple Lie group $\bar G$, containing $G$ as dense subgroup and such that $Γ$ is a lattice in $\bar G$. This type of unitary representations of of $G$ appear in the study of automorphic forms. We…
This paper initiates the study by analytic methods of the generalized principal series Maass forms on $GL(3)$. These forms occur as an infinite sequence of one-parameter families in the two-parameter spectrum of $GL(3)$ Maass forms, analogous to the relationship between the holomorphic modular forms and the spherical Maass cusp forms on $GL(2)$. We develop a Kuznetsov trace formula attached to these forms at each weight and use it to prove an arithmetically-weighted Weyl law, demonstrating the existence of forms which are not self-dual. Previously, the only such forms that were known to exist …
We present completions of mock theta functions to harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $1/2$ and algebraic formulas for the coefficients of mock theta functions. We give several harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $1/2$ that have mock theta functions as their holomorphic part. Using these harmonic weak Maass forms and the Millson theta lift we compute finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of the appearing mock theta functions in terms of traces of singular moduli.
We study sums of Hecke eigenvalues of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb Z)$, with general $n\geq 3$, over certain short intervals under the assumption of the generalised Lindelöf hypothesis and a slightly stronger upper bound concerning the exponent towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture that is currently known. In particular, in this case we evaluate the second moment of the sums in question asymptotically.
We discuss the problem of the vanishing of Poincaré series. This problem is known to be related to the existence of weakly holomorphic forms with prescribed principal part. The obstruction to the existence is related to the pseudomodularity of Ramanujan's mock theta functions. We embed the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms into the larger space of harmonic weak Maass forms. From this perspective we discuss the linear relations between Poincaré series and the connection to Ramanujan's mock theta functions.
We analyze the mock modular behavior of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$, a partition function introduced by Andrews, Dixit, Schultz, and Yee. This function arose in a study of smallest parts functions related to classical third order mock theta functions, one of which is $ω(q)$. We find that the modular completion of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$ is not simply a harmonic Maass form, but is instead the derivative of a linear combination of products of various harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. We precisely describe its behavior under modular transformations and find that the image under the Maass lowering operator lies…
Bruinier and Ono recently developed the theory of generalized Borcherds products, which uses coefficients of certain Maass forms as exponents in infinite product expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Using this, one can use classical results on congruences of modular forms to obtain congruences for Maass forms. In this note we work out the example of Ramanujan's mock theta functions f and ω in detail.
We prove certain relations between Satake parameters of cuspidal representations of $\GL_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ at finite and archimedean places. Consequently, we show that the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture at a fixed prime $p\nmid N$ for \textit{non-exceptional} Maass forms of level $N$ implies the conjecture at $p$ for \textit{all} Maass forms of level $N$ and the Selberg's $1/4$-eigenvalue conjecture simultaneously. As an application, we improve Kim and Sarnak's $7/64$-bound towards the Satake parameters at all $p\nmid N$ for exceptional Maass forms.
In this paper, considering the Eichler-Shimura cohomology theory for Jacobi forms, we study connections between harmonic Maass-Jacobi forms and Jacobi integrals. As an application we study a pairing between two Jacobi integrals, which is defined by special values of partial $L$-functions of skew-holomorphic Jacobi cusp forms. We obtain connections between this pairing and the Petersson inner product for skew-holomorphic Jacobi cusp forms. This result can be considered as analogue of Haberland formula of elliptic modular forms for Jacobi forms.
The Kuznetsov and Petersson trace formulae for $GL(2)$ forms may collectively be derived from Poincaré series in the space of Maass forms with weight. Having already developed the spherical spectral Kuznetsov formula for $GL(3)$, the goal of this series of papers is to derive the spectral Kuznetsov formulae for non-spherical Maass forms and use them to produce the corresponding Weyl laws; this appears to be the first proof of the existence of such forms not coming from the symmetric-square construction. Aside from general interest in new types of automorphic forms, this is a necessary step in …
In this article, we obtain transformation formulas analogous to the identity of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood in the setting of primitive Maass cusp form over the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$ and also provide an equivalent criterion of the grand Riemann hypothesis for the $L$-function associated to the primitive Maass cusp form over $Γ_0(N)$.
Let E_lambda be a Hilbert space, whose elements are functions spanned by the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated with an eigenvalue lambda>0. The norm of elements in this space is given by the Petersson inner product. In this paper, the trace of Hecke operators T_n acting on the space E_lambda is computed for congruence subgroups of Gamma_0(N) of square free level, which may be considered as the analogue of the Eichler-Selberg trace formula [11] for non-holomorphyic cusp forms of weight zero.
We employ spectral methods of automorphic forms to establish a holomorphic projection operator for tensor products of vector-valued harmonic weak Maass forms and vector-valued modular forms. We apply this operator to discover simple recursions for Fourier series coefficients of Ramanujan's mock theta functions.
In a series of papers the first author and Ono connected the rank, a partition statistic introduced by Dyson, to weak Maass forms, a new class of functions which are related to modular forms. Naturally it is of wide interest to find other explicit examples of Maass forms. Here we construct a new infinite family of such forms, arising from overpartitions. As applications we obtain combinatorial decompositions of Ramanujan-type congruences for overpartitions as well as the modularity of rank differences in certain arithmetic progressions.
We consider sign changes of Fourier coefficients of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb Z)$. When the underlying form is self-dual, we show that there are $\gg_\varepsilon X^{5/6-\varepsilon}$ sign changes among the coefficients $\{A(m,1)\}_{m\leq X}$ and that there is a positive proportion of sign changes for many self-dual forms. Similar result concerning the positive proportion of sign changes also hold for the real-valued coefficients $A(m,m)$ for generic $\mathrm{GL}_3$ cusp forms, a result which is based on a new effective Sato-Tate type theorem for a family of $\…
We establish the Sato-Tate equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues on average for families of Hecke--Maass cusp forms on SL(n,R)/SO(n). For each of the principal, symmetric square and exterior square L-functions we verify that the families are essentially cuspidal and deduce the level distribution with restricted support of the low-lying zeros. We also deduce average estimates toward Ramanujan.
Muto, Narita and Pitale construct counterexamples to the Generalized Ramanujan Conjecture for GL(2,B) over the division quaternion algebra B with discriminant two via a lift from SL(2). In this paper, we try to exactly characterize the image of this lift. The previous methods of Maass, Kohnen or Kojima do not apply here, hence we approach this problem via a combination of classical and representation theory techniques to identify the image. Crucially, we use the Jacquet Langlands correspondence described by Badulescu and Renard to characterize the representations.
It is known that among Siegel modular forms of degree $2$ and level $1$ the only functions that violate the Ramanujan conjecture are Saito-Kurokawa lifts of modular forms of level $1$. These are precisely the functions whose Fourier coefficients satisfy Maass relations. More generally, the Ramanujan conjecture for $\mathrm{GSp}_4$ is predicted to fail only in case of CAP representations. It is not known though whether the associated Siegel modular forms (of various levels) still satisfy a version of Maass relations. We show that this is indeed the case for the ones related to P-CAP representat…
Andrews recently introduced k-marked Durfee symbols, which are a generalization of partitions that are connected to moments of Dyson's rank statistic. He used these connections to find identities relating their generating functions as well as to prove Ramanujan-type congruences for these objects and find relations between. In this paper we show that the hypergeometric generating functions for these objects are natural examples of quasimock theta functions, which are defined as the holomorphic parts of weak Maass forms and their derivatives. In particular, these generating functions may be view…
In this paper, we provide an explicit construction of weight $0$ meromorphic modular forms. Following work of Petersson, we build these via Poincaré series. There are two main aspects of our investigation which differ from his approach. Firstly, the naive definition of the Poincaré series diverges and one must analytically continue via Hecke's trick. Hecke's trick is further complicated in our situation by the fact that the Fourier expansion does not converge everywhere due to singularities in the upper half-plane so it cannot solely be used to analytically continue the functions. To explain t…
We define a regularized Shintani theta lift which maps weight $2k+2$ ($k \in \Z, k \geq 0$) harmonic Maass forms for congruence subgroups to (sesqui-)harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2+k$ for the Weil representation of an even lattice of signature $(1,2)$. We show that its Fourier coefficients are given by traces of CM values and regularized cycle integrals of the input harmonic Maass form. Further, the Shintani theta lift is related via the $ξ$-operator to the Millson theta lift studied in our earlier work. We use this connection to construct $ξ$-preimages of Zagier's weight $1/2$ generating…
Harmonic weak Maass forms of half-integral weight are the subject of many recent works. They are closely related to Ramanujan's mock theta functions, their theta lifts give rise to Arakelov Green functions, and their coefficients are often related to central values and derivatives of Hecke L-functions. We present an algorithm to compute harmonic weak Maass forms numerically, based on the automorphy method due to Hejhal and Stark. As explicit examples we consider harmonic weak Maass forms of weight 1/2 associated to the elliptic curves 11a1, 37a1, 37b1. We made extensive numerical computations …
We present some applications of the Kudla-Millson and the Millson theta lift. The two lifts map weakly holomorphic modular functions to vector valued harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2$ and $1/2$, respectively. We give finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of Ramanujan's mock theta functions $f(q)$ and $ω(q)$ in terms of traces of CM-values of a weakly holomorphic modular function. Further, we construct vector valued harmonic Maass forms whose shadows are unary theta functions, and whose holomorphic parts have rational coefficients. This yields a rationality result for the coefficien…
In this paper, we investigate Fourier expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Over the years, a number of special cases of meromorphic modular forms were shown to have Fourier expansions closely resembling the expansion of the reciprocal of the weight $6$ Eisenstein series which was computed by Hardy and Ramanujan. By investigating meromorphic modular forms within a larger space of so-called polar harmonic Maass forms, we prove in this paper that all negative-weight meromorphic modular forms (and furthermore all quasi-meromorpic modular forms) have Fourier expansions of this type, granted tha…
Let $f$ be a Hecke-Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with Laplace eigenvalue $λ_f(Δ)=1/4+μ^2$ and let $λ_f(n)$ be its $n$-th normalized Fourier coefficient. It is proved that, uniformly in $α, β\in \mathbb{R}$, $$ \sum_{n \leq X}λ_f(n)e\left(αn^2+βn\right) \ll X^{7/8+\varepsilon}λ_f(Δ)^{1/2+\varepsilon}, $$ where the implied constant depends only on $\varepsilon$. We also consider the summation function of $λ_f(n)$ and under the Ramanujan conjecture we are able to prove $$ \sum_{n \leq X}λ_f(n)\ll X^{1/3+\varepsilon}λ_f(Δ)^{4/9+\varepsilon} $$ with the implied constant depending only …
Recent works, mostly related to Ramanujan's mock theta functions, make use of the fact that harmonic weak Maass forms can be combinatorial generating functions. Generalizing works of Waldspurger, Kohnen and Zagier, we prove that such forms also serve as "generating functions" for central values and derivatives of quadratic twists of weight 2 modular $L$-functions. To obtain these results, we construct differentials of the third kind with twisted Heegner divisor by suitably generalizing the Borcherds lift to harmonic weak Maass forms. The connection with periods, Fourier coefficients, derivativ…
The study of Fourier coefficients of meromorphic modular forms dates back to Ramanujan, who, together with Hardy, studied the reciprocal of the weight 6 Eisenstein series. Ramanujan conjectured a number of further identities for other meromorphic modular forms and quasi-modular forms which were subsequently established by Berndt, Bialek, and Yee. In this paper, we place these identities into the context of a larger family by making use of Poincaré series introduced by Petersson and a new family of Poincaré series which we construct here and which are of independent interest. In addition we est…
The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that the behavior of zeros of a family of $L$-functions near the central point (as the conductors tend to zero) agree with the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group (as the matrix size tends to infinity). Using the Petersson formula, Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak \cite{ILS} proved that the behavior of zeros near the central point of holomorphic cusp forms agree with the behavior of eigenvalues of orthogonal matrices for suitably restricted test functions. We prove a similar result for level 1 cuspidal Maass forms, the other natural fami…
We give an explicit version of the Ramanujan-Petersson Conjecture for Hilbert Modular Forms, and deduce the "Ramanujan" property for certain cubical complexes. We reinterpret the results in terms of Communication Networks. The work will appear in the proceedings of a NATO conference on "Applications of Algebraic Geometry to Coding Theory, Physics, and Computation", which took place in Eilat, Israel, February 25 - March 1s 2001, to be published by Kluwer.
In a seminal series of papers from the 80's, Lubotzky, Phillips and Sarnak applied the Ramanujan-Petersson Conjecture for $GL_{2}$ (Deligne's theorem), to a special family of arithmetic lattices, which act simply-transitively on the Bruhat-Tits trees associated with $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$. As a result, they obtained explicit Ramanujan Cayley graphs from $PSL_{2}\left(\mathbb{F}_{p}\right)$, as well as optimal topological generators ("Golden Gates") for the compact Lie group $PU(2)$. In higher dimension, the naive generalization of the Ramanujan Conjecture fails, due to the phenomenon of endo…
The Katz-Sarnak Density Conjecture states that the behavior of zeros of a family of $L$-functions near the central point (as the conductors tend to zero) agrees with the behavior of eigenvalues near 1 of a classical compact group (as the matrix size tends to infinity). Using the Petersson formula, Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak proved that the behavior of zeros near the central point of holomorphic cusp forms agrees with the behavior of eigenvalues of orthogonal matrices for suitably restricted test functions $ϕ$. We prove similar results for families of cuspidal Maass forms, the other natural family…
Let $π$ be a $SL(3,\mathbb Z)$ Hecke-Maass cusp form satisfying the Ramanujan conjecture and the Selberg-Ramanujan conjecture, and let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M$, which we assume to be prime for simplicity. We will prove the following subconvex bound $$ L\left(\tfrac{1}{2},π\otimesχ\right)\ll_{π,\varepsilon} M^{\frac{3}{4}-\frac{1}{1612}+\varepsilon}. $$
Sander Zwegers showed that Ramanujan's mock theta functions are $q$-hypergeometric series, whose $q$-expansion coefficients are half of the Fourier coefficients of a non-holomorphic modular form. George Andrews, Henri Cohen, Freeman Dyson, and Dean Hickerson found a pair of $q$-hypergeometric series each of which contains half of the Fourier coefficients of Maass waveform of eigenvalue $1/4$. This series of papers shows that a $q$-series construction, called ``renormalization'', yields the other half of the Fourier coefficients from a series which contains half of them. This construction unifi…
Let spt(n) denote the total number of appearances of smallest parts in the partitions of n. Recently, Andrews showed how spt(n) is related to the second rank moment, and proved some surprising Ramanujan-type congruences mod 5, 7 and 13. We prove a generalization of these congruences using known relations between rank and crank moments. We obtain explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) mod p for p = 11, 17, 19, 29, 31 and 37. Recently, Bringmann and Ono proved that Dyson's rank function has infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences. Their proof is non-constructive and utilizes the theor…
Let F be a Hecke-Maass cusp form for the group SL(4, Z) with Laplace eigenvalue lambda. Assume that F satisfies the Ramanujan conjecture at infinity (this is satisfied by almost all cusp forms). We show a power-saving sup-norm bound in terms of lambda (relative to the generic bound) for F restricted to a compact set.
Let $f(q)=1+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} α(n)q^n$ be the well-known third order mock theta of Ramanujan. In 1964, George Andrews proved an asymptotic formula of the form $$α(n)= \sum_{c\leq\sqrt{n}} ψ(n)+O_ε\left(n^ε\right),$$ where $ψ(n)$ is an expression involving generalized Kloosterman sums and the $I$-Bessel function. Andrews conjectured that the series converges to $α(n)$ when extended to infinity, and that it does not converge absolutely. Bringmann and Ono proved the first of these conjectures. Here we obtain a power savings bound for the error in Andrews' formula, and we also prove the second o…
Let $f$ be a Petersson normalized Hecke-Maass cusp form with spectral parameter $t\geq 2$ and let $\mathcal{C}_{D}$ be the union of closed geodesics in $\text{Sl}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})\setminus \mathbb{H}$ associated to a fundamental discriminant $D>0$. Following a suggestion by Sarnak in his letter to Reznikov, we express the restriction norm $||f|_{\mathcal{C}_{D}}||_{2}^{2}$ as a weighted sum of central values of L-functions using Waldspurger's formula. This allows us to get an unconditional improvement over the current bounds.
In this paper we extend the results in [Ra] on the representation of the Hecke algebra, determined by the matrix coefficients of a projective, unitary representation, in the discrete series of representations of the ambient group, to a more general, vector valued case. This method is used to analyze the traces of the Hecke operators. We construct representations of the Hecke algebra of a group $G$, relative to an almost normal subgroup $Γ$, into the von Neumann algebra of the group $G$, tensor matrices. The representations we obtain are a lifting of the Hecke operators to this larger algebra. …
Hecke eigenvalues of classical modular forms often encode a wealth of arithmetic data. The Satake $p$-parameters of a Siegel modular form play a role analogous to the one played by Hecke eigenvalues in the characterization of classical modular forms. In this paper we present an algorithm by which we can compute the Satake $p$-parameters of a Siegel modular form $F$ if we are given the Hecke eigenvalues of $F$ with respect to the generators of the local Hecke algebra. We compute explicit examples and relate our computations to the Ramanujan-Petersson Conjecture.
Let $π$ be a Hecke--Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$ with normalized Hecke eigenvalues $λ_π(n,r)$. Let $f$ be a holomorphic or Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with normalized Hecke eigenvalues $λ_f(n)$. In this paper, we are concerned with obtaining nontrivial estimates for the sum \begin{equation*} \sum_{r,n\geq 1}λ_π(n,r)λ_f(n)e\left(t\,φ(r^2n/N)\right)V\left(r^2n/N\right), \end{equation*} where $e(x)=e^{2πix}$, $V(x)\in \mathcal{C}_c^{\infty}(0,\infty)$, $t\geq 1$ is a large parameter and $φ(x)$ is some real-valued smooth function. As applications, we give an improved s…
The aim of this paper is to carry out an explicit construction of CAP representations of GL(2) over a division quaternion algebra with discriminant two. We first construct cusp forms on such group explicitly by lifting from Maass cusp forms for the congruence subgroup of level 2. We show that this lifting is non-zero and Hecke-equivariant. This allows us to determine each local component of such a cuspidal representation. We then know that our cuspidal representations provide examples of CAP representations, and in fact, counterexamples of the Generalized Ramanujan conjecture.
We establish the first moment bound $$ \sum_φ L(φ\otimes φ\otimes Ψ, \tfrac{1}{2}) \ll_{\varepsilon} p^{5/4+\varepsilon} $$ for triple product $L$-functions, where $Ψ$ is a fixed Hecke-Maass form on $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and $φ$ runs over the Hecke-Maass newforms on $Γ_0(p)$ of bounded eigenvalue. The proof is via the theta correspondence and analysis of periods of half-integral weight modular forms. This estimate is not expected to be optimal, but the exponent $5/4$ is the strongest obtained to date for a moment problem of this shape. We show that the expected upper bound follows …
The mock theta conjectures are ten identities involving Ramanujan's fifth-order mock theta functions. The conjectures were proven by Hickerson in 1988 using q-series methods. Using methods from the theory of harmonic Maass forms, specifically work of Zwegers and Bringmann-Ono, Folsom reduced the proof of the mock theta conjectures to a finite computation. Both of these approaches involve proving the identities individually, relying on work of Andrews-Garvan. Here we give a unified proof of the mock theta conjectures by realizing them as an equality between two nonholomorphic vector-valued modu…
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ which satisfies certain reasonable assumptions such as integrality of Hecke polynomials, the existence of mod $\ell$ Galois representations attached to $π$. Under Langlands functoriality of exterior $m$-th power $\wedge^m(π)$, $m=2,...,[\frac n2]$, we will construct a unique Artin representation associated to $π$. As a corollary, we obtain that such a cuspidal representation of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ satisfies the Ramanujan conjecture. We also revisit our previous work on Artin representations associated t…
