Andrews recently introduced k-marked Durfee symbols, which are a generalization of partitions that are connected to moments of Dyson's rank statistic. He used these connections to find identities relating their generating functions as well as to prove Ramanujan-type congruences for these objects and find relations between.
In this paper we show that the hypergeometric generating functions for these objects are natural examples of quasimock theta functions, which are defined as the holomorphic parts of weak Maass forms and their derivatives. In particular, these generating functions may be viewed as analogs of Ramanujan's mock theta functions with arbitrarily high weight. We use the automorphic properties to prove the existence of infinitely many congruences for the Durfee symbols. Furthermore, we show that as k varies, the modularity of the k-marked Durfee symbols is precisely dictated by the case k=2. Finally, we use this relation in order to prove the existence of general congruences for rank moments in terms of level one modular forms of bounded weight.
The modularity of the partition generating function has many important consequences, for example asymptotics and congruences for $p(n)$. In a series of papers the author and Ono \cite{BO1,BO2} connected the rank, a partition statistic introduced by Dyson, to weak Maass forms, a new class of functions which are related to modular forms and which were first considered in \cite{BF}. Here we do a further step towards understanding how weak Maass forms arise from interesting partition statistics by placing certain 2-marked Durfee symbols introduced by Andrews \cite{An1} into the framework of weak M…
We construct a natural basis for the space of weak harmonic Maass forms of weight 5/2 on the full modular group. The non-holomorphic part of the first element of this basis encodes the values of the ordinary partition function p(n). We obtain a formula for the coefficients of the mock modular forms of weight 5/2 in terms of regularized inner products of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weight -1/2, and we obtain Hecke-type relations among these mock modular forms.
We prove that the coefficients of certain weight -1/2 harmonic Maass forms are traces of singular moduli for weak Maass forms. To prove this theorem, we construct a theta lift from spaces of weight -2 harmonic weak Maass forms to spaces of weight -1/2 vector-valued harmonic weak Maass forms on Mp_2(Z), a result which is of independent interest. We then prove a general theorem which guarantees (with bounded denominator) when such Maass singular moduli are algebraic. As an example of these results, we derive a formula for the partition function p(n) as a finite sum of algebraic numbers which lie…
We study the coefficients of a natural basis for the space of weak harmonic Maass forms of weight $5/2$ on the full modular group. The non-holomorphic part of the first element of this infinite basis encodes the values of the partition function $p(n)$. We show that the coefficients of these harmonic Maass forms are given by traces of singular invariants. These are values of non-holomorphic modular functions at CM points or their real quadratic analogues: cycle integrals of such functions along geodesics on the modular curve. The real quadratic case relates to recent work of Duke, Imamoglu, and…
By work of Bringmann, Ono, and Rhoades it is known that the generating function of the $M_2$-rank of partitions without repeated odd parts is the so-called holomorphic part of a certain harmonic Maass form. Here we improve the standing of this function as a harmonic Maass form and show more can be done with this function. In particular we show the related harmonic Maass form transforms like the generating function for partitions without repeated odd parts (which is a modular form). We then use these improvements to determine formulas for the rank differences modulo $7$. Additionally we give id…
In a series of papers the first author and Ono connected the rank, a partition statistic introduced by Dyson, to weak Maass forms, a new class of functions which are related to modular forms. Naturally it is of wide interest to find other explicit examples of Maass forms. Here we construct a new infinite family of such forms, arising from overpartitions. As applications we obtain combinatorial decompositions of Ramanujan-type congruences for overpartitions as well as the modularity of rank differences in certain arithmetic progressions.
In a recent paper, Bruinier and Ono prove that the coefficients of certain weight -1/2 harmonic Maass forms are traces of singular moduli for weak Maass forms. In particular, for the partition function $p(n)$, they prove that \[p(n)=\frac{1}{24n-1} \sum P(α_Q),\] where $P$ is a weak Maass form and $α_Q$ ranges over a finite set of discriminant $-24n+1$ CM points. Moreover, they show that $6 (24n-1) P(α_Q)$ is always an algebraic integer, and they conjecture that $(24n-1) P(α_Q)$ is always an algebraic integer. Here we prove a general theorem which implies this conjecture as a corollary.
We estimate the sums \[ \sum_{c\leq x} \frac{S(m,n,c,χ)}{c}, \] where the $S(m,n,c,χ)$ are Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight on the modular group. Our estimates are uniform in $m$, $n$, and $x$ in analogy with Sarnak and Tsimerman's improvement of Kuznetsov's bound for the ordinary Kloosterman sums. Among other things this requires us to develop mean value estimates for coefficients of Maass cusp forms of weight $1/2$ and uniform estimates for $K$-Bessel integral transforms. As an application, we obtain an improved estimate for the classical problem of estimating the size of the error t…
Here we prove that Benford's law holds for coefficients of an infinite class of modular forms. Expanding the work of Bringmann and Ono on exact formulas for harmonic Maass forms, we derive the necessary asymptotics. This implies that the unrestricted partition function $p(n)$, as well as other natural partition functions, satisfy Benford's law.
We give an upper bound for the error term in the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula for the partition function. The main input is a new hybrid subconvexity bound for the central value $L(\tfrac 12,f\times (\tfrac{q}{\cdot}))$ in the $q$ and spectral parameter aspects, where $f$ is a Hecke-Maass cusp form for $Γ_0(N)$ and $q$ is a fundamental discriminant.
Let spt(n) denote the total number of appearances of smallest parts in the partitions of n. Recently, Andrews showed how spt(n) is related to the second rank moment, and proved some surprising Ramanujan-type congruences mod 5, 7 and 13. We prove a generalization of these congruences using known relations between rank and crank moments. We obtain explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) mod p for p = 11, 17, 19, 29, 31 and 37. Recently, Bringmann and Ono proved that Dyson's rank function has infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences. Their proof is non-constructive and utilizes the theor…
We analyze the mock modular behavior of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$, a partition function introduced by Andrews, Dixit, Schultz, and Yee. This function arose in a study of smallest parts functions related to classical third order mock theta functions, one of which is $ω(q)$. We find that the modular completion of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$ is not simply a harmonic Maass form, but is instead the derivative of a linear combination of products of various harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. We precisely describe its behavior under modular transformations and find that the image under the Maass lowering operator lies…
We investigate the modular properties of a new partition rank, the $M_d$-rank of overpartitions. In fact this is an infinite family of ranks, indexed by the positive integer $d$, that gives both the Dyson rank of overpartitions and the overpartition $M_2$-rank as special cases. The $M_d$-rank of overpartitions is the holomorphic part of a certain harmonic Maass form of weight $\frac{1}{2}$. We give the exact transformation of this harmonic Maass form along with a few identities for the $M_d$-rank.
Let $f(q)=1+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} α(n)q^n$ be the well-known third order mock theta of Ramanujan. In 1964, George Andrews proved an asymptotic formula of the form $$α(n)= \sum_{c\leq\sqrt{n}} ψ(n)+O_ε\left(n^ε\right),$$ where $ψ(n)$ is an expression involving generalized Kloosterman sums and the $I$-Bessel function. Andrews conjectured that the series converges to $α(n)$ when extended to infinity, and that it does not converge absolutely. Bringmann and Ono proved the first of these conjectures. Here we obtain a power savings bound for the error in Andrews' formula, and we also prove the second o…
Congruences are found modulo powers of 5, 7 and 13 for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). These congruences are reminiscent of Ramanujan's partition congruences modulo powers of 5, 7 and 11. Recently, Ono proved explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) modulo p for all primes p>3 which were conjectured earlier by the author. We extend Ono's method to handle the powers of 5, 7 and 13 congruences. We need the theory of weak Maass forms as well as certain classical modular equations for the Dedekind eta-function.
We consider the $t$-hook functions on partitions $f_{a,t}: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ defined by $$ f_{a,t}(λ):=t^{a-1} \sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^a}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}_t(λ)$ is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of $t$. The Bloch-Okounkov $q$-brackets $\langle f_{a,t}\rangle_q$ include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even $a\geq 2$, we show that these $q$-brackets are natural pieces of weight $2-a$ sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd $a\leq -1,$ we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. …
New congruences are found for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). The generating function for spt(n) is related to the holomorphic part alpha(24z) of a certain weak Maass form M(z) of weight 3/2. We show that a normalized form of the generating function for spt(n) is an eigenform modulo 72 for the Hecke operators T(p^2) for primes p > 3, and an eigenform modulo t for t = 5, 7 or 13 provided that (t, 6p) = 1. The result for the modulus 3 was observed earlier by the author and considered by Ono and Folsom. Similar congruences for higher powers of t (namely 5^6, 7^4 and 13^2) occur…
Certain objects of conformal field theory, for example partition functions on the rectangle and the torus, and one-point functions on the torus, are either invariant or transform simply under the modular group, properties which should be preserved under the $T\overline T$ deformation. The formulation and proof of this statement in fact extents to more general functions such as $T\overline T$ deformed modular and Jacobi forms. We show that the deformation acts simply on their Mellin transform, multiplying it by a universal entire function. Finally we show that Maass forms on the torus are eigen…
We compute the Moore-Witten regularized u-plane integral on CP^2, and we confirm their conjecture that it is the generating function for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants of CP^2. We prove this conjecture using the theory of mock theta functions and harmonic Maass forms. We also derive further such generating functions for the SO(3)-Donaldson invariants with 2N_f massless monopoles using the geometry of certain rational elliptic surfaces (N_f=0,2,3,4). We show that the partition function for N_f=4 is nearly modular. When combined with one of Ramanujan's mock theta functions, we obtain a weight 1/…
