We introduce the notion of locally visible and locally Gromov hyperbolic domains in $\mathbb C^d$. We prove that a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^d$ is locally visible and locally Gromov hyperbolic if and only if it is (globally) visible and Gromov hyperbolic with respect to the Kobayashi distance. This allows to detect, from local information near the boundary, those domains which are Gromov hyperbolic and for which biholomorphisms extend continuously up to the boundary.
We construct an elementary counterexample to the criterion for Kobayashi hyperbolicity for a class of tube domains in ${\mathbb C}^2$ proposed by J.-J. Loeb.
We characterize Gromov hyperbolicity of the quasihyperbolic metric space (Ω,k) by geometric properties of the Ahlfors regular length metric measure space (Ω,d,μ). The characterizing properties are called the Gehring--Hayman condition and the ball--separation condition.
In this paper we give a characterization of the Gromov hyperbolicity of trains (a large class of Denjoy domains which contains the flute surfaces) in terms of the behavior of a real function. This function describes somehow the distances between some remarkable geodesics in the train. This theorem has several consequences; in particular, it allows to deduce a result about stability of hyperbolicity, even though the original surface and the modified one are not quasi-isometric.
We obtain explicit and simple conditions which in many cases allow one decide, whether or not a Denjoy domain endowed with the Poincare or quasihyperbolic metric is Gromov hyperbolic. The criteria are based on the Euclidean size of the complement. As a corollary, the main theorem allows to deduce the non-hyperbolicity of any periodic Denjoy domain.
This note concerns tube domains in ${\mathbb C}^2$ with the envelope of holomorphy not equal to the entire space. We construct examples showing that for such domains the sufficient condition for Kobayashi hyperbolicity due to M. Jarnicki and P. Pflug cannot be replaced by its weaker "affine" variant, which is known to be a necessary condition for hyperbolicity. Thus, we arrive at the somewhat unexpected conclusion that the obstructions for a domain in the above class to be Kobayashi hyperbolic are not just "affine".
In this paper we give an local estimate for the Kobayashi distance on a bounded convex domain of finite type, which relates to a local pseudodistance near the boundary. The estimate is precise up to a bounded additive term. Also we conclude that the domain equipped with the Kobayashi distance is Gromov hyperbolic which gives another proof of the result of Zimmer.
In an earlier article the second author introduced three families of tube domains in ${\mathbf C}^2$ with holomorphic automorphism group isomorphic to ${\mathbf R}\ltimes{\mathbf R}^2$ and envelope of holomorphy equal to ${\mathbf C}^2$. In the present paper we show that every domain in each of these families is Kobayashi-hyperbolic.
Let D be a smooth relatively compact and strictly J-pseudoconvex domain in a four dimensional almost complex manifold (M,J). We give sharp estimates of the Kobayashi metric. Our approach is based on an asymptotic quantitative description of both the domain D and the almost complex structure J near a boundary point. Following Z.M.Balogh and M.Bonk, these sharp estimates provide the Gromov hyperbolicity of the domain D.
We prove that every bounded strictly $J$-convex region equipped with the Kobayashi metric is hyperbolic in the sense of Gromov. We apply this result to the study of the dynamics of pseudo-holomorphic maps.
In this paper we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Kobayashi metric on a convex domain to be Gromov hyperbolic. In particular we show that for convex domains with $C^\infty$ boundary being of finite type in the sense of D'Angelo is equivalent to the Gromov hyperbolicity of the Kobayashi metric. We also show that bounded domains which are locally convexifiable and have finite type in the sense of D'Angelo have Gromov hyperbolic Kobayashi metric. The proofs use ideas from the theory of the Hilbert metric.
After a study of the Kobayashi metrics on certain scaled domains, we show the stabilities of the infinitesimal Kobayashi metrics and the integrated distances in different scaling processes. As an application, we prove that bounded pseudo-convex domains of finite type where the Levi form of every boundary point has corank one are Gromov hyperbolic with respect to the Kobayashi metric. The results in this note generalize Zimmer's and Fiacchi's related works on Gromov hyperbolicity of weakly pseudo-convex domains.
The classical Brody's theorem asserts the equivalence between two notions of hyperbolicity for compact complex spaces, one named after Kobayashi and one expressed in terms of lack of non constant holomorphic entire functions (compactness is only used to prove the harder implication). We extend this theorem to Deligne-Mumford analytic stacks, by first providing definitions of what we think of Kobayashi and Brody hyperbolicity for such objects and then proving the equivalence of these concepts under an assumption of compactness.
We prove the non-hyperbolicity of the Kobayashi distance for $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$-smooth convex domains in $\mathbb{C}^{2}$ which contain an analytic disc in the boundary or have a point of infinite type with rotation symmetry. Moreover, examples of smooth, non pseudoconvex, Gromov hyperbolic domains are given; we prove that the symmetrized polydisc and the tetrablock are not Gromov hyperbolic and write down some results about Gromov hyperbolicity of product spaces.
In this paper we study the global geometry of the Kobayashi metric on "convex" sets. We provide new examples of non-Gromov hyperbolic domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ of many kinds: pseudoconvex and non-pseudocon \newline -vex, bounded and unbounded. Our first aim is to prove that if $Ω$ is a bounded weakly linearly convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n,\,n\geq 2,$ and $S$ is an affine complex hyperplane intersecting $Ω,$ then the domain $Ω\setminus S$ endowed with the Kobayashi metric is not Gromov hyperbolic (Theorem 1.3). Next we localize this result on Kobayashi hyperbolic convex domains. Namely, we sho…
In this paper we study the global geometry of the Kobayashi metric on domains in complex Euclidean space. We are particularly interested in developing necessary and sufficient conditions for the Kobayashi metric to be Gromov hyperbolic. For general domains, it has been suggested that a non-trivial complex affine disk in the boundary is an obstruction to Gromov hyperbolicity. This is known to be the case when the set in question is convex. In this paper we first extend this result to $\mathbb{C}$-convex sets with $C^1$-smooth boundary. We will then show that some boundary regularity is necessar…
In this paper, we prove that in any projective manifold, the complements of general hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree are Kobayashi hyperbolic. We also provide an effective lower bound on the degree. This confirms a conjecture by S. Kobayashi in 1970. Our proof, based on the theory of jet differentials, is obtained by reducing the problem to the construction of a particular example with strong hyperbolicity properties. This approach relies the construction of higher order logarithmic connections allowing us to construct logarithmic Wronskians. These logarithmic Wronskians are the buil…
Let $D=\{ρ< 0\}$ be a smooth relatively compact domain in an almost complex manifold $(M,J)$, where $ρ$ is a smooth defining function of $D$, strictly $J$-plurisubharmonic in a neighborhood of the closure $\overline{D}$ of $D$. We prove that $D$ has a connected boundary and is Gromov hyperbolic.
In this paper we prove that every quasi-projective base space $V$ of smooth family of minimal projective manifolds with maximal variation is pseudo Kobayashi hyperbolic, i.e. $V$ is Kobayashi hyperbolic modulo a proper subvariety $Z\subsetneq V$. In particular, $V$ is algebraically degenerate, that is, every nonconstant entire curve $f:\mathbb{C}\to V$ has image $f(\mathbb{C})$ which lies in that proper subvariety $Z\subsetneq V$. As a direct consequence, we prove the Brody hyperbolicity of moduli spaces of minimal projective manifolds, which answers a question by Viehweg-Zuo in 2003.
We show that every quasihyperbolic geodesic in a John space admitting a roughly starlike Gromov hyperbolic quasihyperbolization is a cone arc. This result provides a new approach to the elementary metric geometry question, formulated in \cite[Question 2]{Hei89}, which has been studied by Gehring, Hag, Martio and Heinonen. As an application, we obtain a simple geometric condition connecting uniformity of the space with the existence of Gromov hyperbolic quasihyperbolization.
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of a mapping which is required to be roughly bilipschitz with respect to the Apollonian metric (roughly Apollonian bilipschitz) of its domain. We prove that under these mappings the uniformity, $φ$-uniformity and $δ$-hyperbolicity (in the sense of Gromov with respect to quasihyperbolic metric) of proper domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are invariant. As applications, we give four equivalent conditions for a quasiconformal mapping which is defined on a uniform domain to be roughly Apollonian bilipschitz, and we conclude that $φ$-uniformit…
The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over ${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. We then use this fact to confirm a long-standing conjecture of Kobayashi (1970), according to which a very general algebraic hypersurface…
We give a necessary complex geometric condition for a bounded smooth convex domain in Cn, endowed with the Kobayashi distance, to be Gromov hyperbolic. More precisely, we prove that if a smooth bounded convex domain contains an analytic disk in its boundary, then the domain is not Gromov hyperbolic for the Kobayashi distance. We also provide examples of bounded smooth convex domains that are not strongly pseudoconvex but are Gromov hyperbolic.

With the aid of a Gromov hyperbolic characterization of uniform domains, we first give an affirmative answer to an open question arisen by Väisälä under weaker assumption. Next, we show that the three-point condition introduced by Väisälä is necessary to obtain quasisymmetry for quasimöbius maps between bounded connected spaces in a quantitative way. Based on these two results, we investigate the boundary behavior of freely quasiconformal and quasihyperbolic mappings on uniform domains of Banach spaces and partially answer another question raised by Väisälä in different ways.
We deliver examples of non-Gromov hyperbolic tube domains with convex bases (equipped with the Kobayashi distance). This is shown by providing a criterion on non-Gromov hyperbolicity of (non-smooth) domains. The results show the similarity of geometry of the bases of non-Gromov hyperbolic tube domains with the geometry of non-Gromov hyperbolic convex domains. A connection between the Hilbert metric of a convex domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb R^n$ with the Kobayashi distance of the tube domain over the domain $Ω$ is also shown. Moreover, continuity properties up to the boundary of complex geodesics in tu…
We study the hyperbolicity of the log variety $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, where $X$ is a very general hypersurface of degree $d\geq 2n+1$ (which is the bound predicted by the Kobayashi conjecture). Using a positivity result for the sheaf of (twisted) logarithmic vector fields, which may be of independent interest, we show that any log-subvariety of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$ is of log-general type, give a new proof of the algebraic hyperbolicity of $(\mathbb{P}^n, X)$, and exclude the existence of maximal rank families of entire curves in the complement of the universal degree $d$ hypersurface. Moreover, we…
We provide several equivalent characterizations of Kobayashi hyperbolicity in unbounded convex domains in terms of peak and anti-peak functions at infinity, affine lines, Bergman metric and iteration theory.
It is known that the $\tilde j$-metric, half-apollonian metric and scale-invariant Cassinian metric are not Gromov hyperbolic. These metrics are defined as a supremum of one-point metrics (i.e., metrics constructed using one boundary point) and the supremum is taken over all boundary points. The aim of this paper is to show that taking the average instead of the supremum yields a metric that preserves the Gromov hyperbolicity. Moreover, we show that the Gromov hyperbolicity constant of the resulting metric does not depend on the number of metrics used in taking the average. We also provide an …
In this paper we prove: if the complete Kähler-Einstein metric on a bounded convex domain (with no boundary regularity assumptions) is Gromov hyperbolic, then the $\bar{\partial}$-Neumann problem satisfies a subelliptic estimate. This is accomplished by constructing bounded plurisubharmonic function whose Hessian grows at a certain rate (which implies a subelliptic estimate by work of Catlin and Straube). We also provide a characterization of Gromov hyperbolicity in terms of orbit of the domain under the group of affine transformations. This characterization allows us to construct many example…
We construct families of convex domains that are biholomorphic to bounded domains, but not bounded convex domains. This is accomplished by finding an obstruction related to the Gromov hyperbolicity of the Kobayashi metric.
This survey article mainly addresses to graduate students and young researchers in complex geometry willing to enter the beautiful word of connections between curvature and Kobayashi hyperbolicity. It is a detailed account of a recent breakthrough by Wu and Yau, shortly after generalized by Tosatti and Yang (and others), which sits on the crossroad between complex differential geometry and Kobayashi hyperbolicity. More specifically, an old conjecture by Kobayashi, stated at the very beginning of the theory, predicts that a compact hyperbolic manifold should have ample canonical bundle. Now, on…
For smooth families with maximal variation, whose general fibers have semi-ample canonical bundle, the generalized Viehweg hyperbolicity conjecture states that the base spaces of such families are of log general type. This deep conjecture was recently proved by Popa-Schnell using the theory of Hodge modules and a theorem by Campana-Păun. In this paper we prove that those base spaces are pseudo Kobayashi hyperbolic, as predicted by the Lang conjecture: any complex quasi-projective manifold is pseudo Kobayashi hyperbolic if it is of log general type. As a consequence, we prove the Brody hyperbol…
A major unsolved problem (according to Demailly 1997) towards the Kobayashi hyperbolicity conjecture in optimal degree is to understand jet differentials of germs of holomorphic discs that are invariant under any reparametrization of the source. The underlying group action is not reductive, but we provide a complete algorithm to generate all invariants, in arbitrary dimension n and for jets of arbitrary order k. Two main new situations are studied in great details. For jets of order 4 in dimension 4, we establish that the algebra of Demailly-Semple invariants is generated by 2835 polynomials, …
The aim of this work is to deal with effective questions related to the Kobayashi and Debarre conjectures, and based on the work of Damian Brotbek and Lionel Darondeau. We first show that if a line bundle $L$ generates $k$-jets, the $k$-th Wronskian ideal sheaf associated with global sections of $L$ reaches its largest possible value. Then we obtain an effective estimate for a weaker version of a theorem of Nakamaye on certain universal Grassmannians. We finally derive from this explicit effective bounds for the Kobayashi and Debarre conjectures.
In this note, we prove the generic Kobayashi volume measure hyperbolicity of singular directed varieties $(X, V)$, as soon as the canonical sheaf $\mathcal{K}\_V$ of $V$ is big in the sense of Demailly.
In this paper, we prove the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of the coarse moduli spaces of canonically polarized or polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds in the sense of complex $V$-spaces (a generalization of complex $V$-manifolds in the sense of Satake). As an application, we prove the following hyperbolic version of Campana's isotriviality conjecture: for the smooth family of canonically polarized or polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds, when the Kobayashi pseudo-distance of the base vanishes identically, the family must be isotrivial, that is, any two fibers are isomorphic. We also prove that for the smooth pr…
We first give a sufficient condition, issued from pluripotential theory, for an unbounded domain in the complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^n$ to be Kobayashi hyperbolic. Then, we construct an example of a rigid pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb C^3$ that is Kobayashi hyperbolic and has a nonempty core. In particular, this domain is not biholomorphic to a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^3$ and the mentioned above sufficient condition for Kobayashi hyperbolicity is not necessary.
A real form $G$ of a complex semisimple Lie group $G^C$ has only finitely many orbits in any given $G^C$-flag manifold $Z=G^C/Q$. The complex geometry of these orbits is of interest, e.g., for the associated representation theory. The open orbits $D$ generally possess only the constant holomorphic functions, and the relevant associated geometric objects are certain positive-dimensional compact complex submanifolds of $D$ which, with very few well-understood exceptions, are parameterized by the Wolf cycle domains $Ω_W(D)$ in $G^C/K^C$, where $K$ is a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. Thus, for t…
We study the hyperbolicity of compactifications of quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic groups. We prove that, up to an étale cover, they are Kobayashi hyperbolic modulo the boundary. Applying our techniques to Siegel modular varieties, we improve some former results of Nadel on the non-existence of certain level structures on abelian varieties over complex function fields.
We present two methods of constructing low degree Kobayashi hyperbolic hypersurfaces in the projective space: the projection method and the deformation method. The talk is based on joint works of the speaker with B. Shiffman and C. Ciliberto.
