The vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of a connected graph G; denoted by dim(G) (resp. edim(G)), is defined as the size of a smallest set S in V (G) which distinguishes all pairs of vertices (resp. edges) in G: Bounds dim(G) <= L(G)+2c(G) and edim(G) <= L(G) + 2c(G); where c(G) is the cyclomatic number in G and L(G) depends on the number of leaves in G, are known to hold for cacti and are conjectured to hold for general graphs. In leafless graphs it holds that L(G) = 0; so for such graphs the conjectured upper bound becomes 2c(G). In this paper, we show that the bound 2c(G) cannot be attained by leafless cacti, so the upper bound for such cacti decreases to 2c(G)-1, and we characterize all extremal leafless cacti for the decreased bound. We conjecture that the decreased bound holds for all leafless graphs, i.e. graphs with minimum degree at least two. We support this conjecture by showing that it holds for all graphs with minimum degree at least three and that it is suficient to show that it holds for all 2-connected graphs, and we also verify the conjecture for graphs of small order.
The anti-forcing number of a perfect matching $M$ of a graph $G$ is the minimal number of edges not in $M$ whose removal to make $M$ as a unique perfect matching of the resulting graph. The set of anti-forcing numbers of all perfect matchings of $G$ is the anti-forcing spectrum of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the plane elementary bipartite graph whose minimum anti-forcing number is one. We show that the maximum anti-forcing number of a graph is at most its cyclomatic number. In particular, we characterize the graphs with the maximum anti-forcing number achieving the upper bound, such ex…
The distinguishing index of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $D'(G)$, is the least number of labels in an edge labeling of $G$ not preserved by any non-trivial automorphism. It was conjectured by Pilśniak (2015) that for any 2-connected graph $D'(G) \leq \lceil \sqrt{Δ(G)}\rceil +1$. We prove a more general result for the distinguishing index of graphs with minimum degree at least two from which the conjecture follows. Also we present graphs $G$ for which $D'(G)\leq \lceil \sqrt{Δ}\rceil$.
A set $D$ of vertices in $G$ is a disjunctive dominating set in $G$ if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to a vertex of $D$ or has at least two vertices in $D$ at distance $2$ from it in $G$. The disjunctive domination number, $γ^{d}_2(G)$, of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a disjunctive dominating set in $G$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ be a graph of order at least $3$, $δ(G)\geq 2$ and with no component isomorphic to any of eight forbidden graphs, then $γ^{d}_2(G)\leq \frac{|G|}{3}$. Moreover, we provide an infinite family of graphs attaining this bound. In addition, we also stud…
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with the maximum degree $Δ$ and the minimum degree $δ$. We give algorithms with complexity $O(1.3158^{n-0.7~Δ(G)})$ and $O(1.32^{n-0.73~Δ(G)})$ that determines if $G$ is 3-colorable, when $δ(G)\geq 8$ and $δ(G)\geq 7$, respectively.
A special case of a conjecture by Thomassé is that any oriented graph with minimum outdegree k contains a dipath of length 2k. For the sake of proving whether or not a counterexample exists, we present reductions and establish bounds on both connectivity and the number of vertices in a counterexample. We further conjecture that in any oriented graph with minimum outdegree k, every vertex belongs to a dipath of length 2k.
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph and let $L:V(G)\rightarrow P(\{1,2,3\})$ be a list assignment over the vertices of $G$, where each vertex with list of size 3 and of degree at most 5 has at least three neighbors with lists of size 2. We can determine $L$-choosability of $G$ in $O(1.3196^{n_3+.5n_2})$ time, where $n_i$ is the number of vertices in $G$ with list of size $i$ for $i\in \{2,3\}$. As a corollary, we conclude that the 3-colorability of any graph $G$ with minimum degree at least 6 can be determined in $O(1.3196^{n-.5Δ(G)})$ time.
The Bermond-Thomassen conjecture states that, for any positive integer $r$, a digraph of minimum out-degree at least $2r-1$ contains at least $r$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles. In 2014, Bang-Jensen, Bessy and Thomass\' e proved the conjecture for tournaments. In 2010, Lichiardopol conjectured that a tournament $T$ with minimum out-degree at least $(q-1)r-1$ contains at least $r$ vertex-disjoint $q$-cycles, where integer $q\geq3$ and $r\geq1$. In this paper, we address Lichiardopol's conjecture affirmatively. In particular, the case $q=3$ implies Bermond-Thomassen conjecture for tournaments.
A theorem of Mader shows that every graph with average degree at least eight has a $K_6$ minor, and this is false if we replace eight by any smaller constant. Replacing average degree by minimum degree seems to make little difference: we do not know whether all graphs with minimum degree at least seven have $K_6$ minors, but minimum degree six is certainly not enough. For every $c>0$ there are arbitrarily large graphs with average degree at least $8-c$ and minimum degree at least six, with no $K_6$ minor. But what if we restrict ourselves to bipartite graphs? The first statement remains true: …
A well known theorem in graph theory states that every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and minimum degree at least $d$ contains a path of length at least $d$, and if $G$ is connected and $n\ge 2d+1$ then $G$ contains a path of length at least $2d$ (Dirac, 1952). In this article, we give an extension of Dirac's result to hypergraphs. We determine asymptotic lower bounds of the minimum degrees of 3-graphs to guarantee linear paths of specific lengths, and the lower bounds are tight up to a constant.
In this paper we consider the existence of Hamilton cycles in the random graph $G=G_{n,m}^{δ\geq 3}$. This a random graph chosen uniformly from the set of graphs with vertex set $[n]$, $m$ edges and minimum degree at least 3. Our ultimate goal is to prove that if $m=cn$ and $c>3/2$ is constant then $G$ is Hamiltonian w.h.p. In an earlier paper the second author showed that $c\geq 10$ is sufficient for this and in this paper we reduce the lower bound to $c>2.662...$. This new lower bound is the same lower bound found in Frieze and Pittel \cite{FP} for the expansion of so-called Pósa sets.
A digraph $D$ is $k$-linked if it satisfies that for every choice of disjoint sets $\{x_1,\ldots{},x_k\}$ and $\{y_1,\ldots{},y_k\}$ of vertices of $D$ there are vertex disjoint paths $P_1,\ldots{},P_k$ such that $P_i$ is an $(x_i,y_i)$-path. Confirming a conjecture by Kühn et al, Pokrovskiy proved in 2015 that every $452k$-strong tournament is $k$-linked and asked for a better linear bound. Very recently Meng et al proved that every $(40k-31)$-strong tournament is $k$-linked. In this note we use an important lemma from their paper to give a short proof that every $(13k-6)$-strong tournament o…
A celebrated theorem of Stiebitz asserts that any graph with minimum degree at least $s+t+1$ can be partitioned into two parts which induce two subgraphs with minimum degree at least $s$ and $t$, respectively. This resolved a conjecture of Thomassen. In this paper, we prove that for $s,t\geq 2$, if a graph $G$ contains no cycle of length four and has minimum degree at least $s+t-1$, then $G$ can be partitioned into two parts which induce two subgraphs with minimum degree at least $s$ and $t$, respectively. This improves the result of Diwan, who proved the same statement for graphs of girth at …
The order of monochromatic subgraphs with a given minimum degree
A feedback vertex set of a graph is a subset of vertices intersecting all cycles. We provide tight upper bounds on the size of a minimum feedback vertex set in planar graphs of girth at least five. We prove that if $G$ is a connected planar graph of girth at least five on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, then $G$ has a feedback vertex set of size at most $\frac{2m-n+2}{7}$. By Euler's formula, this implies that $G$ has a feedback vertex set of size at most $\frac{m}{5}$ and $\frac{n-2}{3}$. These results not only improve a result of Dross, Montassier and Pinlou and confirm the girth-5 case of one o…
Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp observed the following fact for every fixed integer $k\geq 2$: Every graph on $n\geq k-1$ vertices with at least $(k-1)(n-k+2)+{k-2\choose 2}$ edges contains a subgraph with minimum degree at least $k$. However, there are examples in which the whole graph is the only such subgraph. Erdős et al. conjectured that having just one more edge implies the existence of a subgraph on at most $(1-\varepsilon_k)n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $k$, where $\varepsilon_k>0$ depends only on $k$. We prove this conjecture, using and extending ideas of Mousset, Noeve…
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph with $n$ vertices. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is called a rainbow subgraph of $G$ if the colors of each pair of the edges in $E(H)$ are distinct. We define the minimum color degree of $G$ to be the smallest number of the colors of the edges that are incident to a vertex $v$, for all $v\in V(G)$. Suppose that $G$ contains no rainbow-cycle subgraph of length four. We show that if the minimum color degree of $G$ is at least $\frac{n+3k-2}{2}$, then $G$ contains a rainbow-cycle subgraph of length at least $k$, where $k\geq 5$. Moreover, if the condition of $G$ is restri…
We prove a minimum degree version of the Kruskal--Katona theorem: given $d\ge 1/4$ and a triple system $F$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $d\binom n2$, we obtain asymptotically tight lower bounds for the size of its shadow. Equivalently, for $t\ge n/2-1$, we asymptotically determine the minimum size of a graph on $n$ vertices, in which every vertex is contained in at least $\binom t2$ triangles. This can be viewed as a variant of the Rademacher--Turán problem.
In 1995, Stiebitz asked the following question: For any positive integers $s,t$, is there a finite integer $f(s,t)$ such that every digraph $D$ with minimum out-degree at least $f(s,t)$ admits a bipartition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ induces a subdigraph with minimum out-degree at least $s$ and $B$ induces a subdigraph with minimum out-degree at least $t$? We give an affirmative answer for tournaments, multipartite tournaments, and digraphs with bounded maximum in-degrees. In particular, we show that for every $ε$ with $0<ε<1/2$, there exists an integer $δ_0$ such that every tournament with minimu…
We prove that every graph of minimum degree at least $d \ge 1$ contains a subdivision of some maximal 3-degenerate graph of order $d+1$. This generalizes the classic results of Dirac ($d=3$) and Pelikán ($d=4$). We conjecture that for any planar maximal 3-degenerate graph $H$ of order $d+1$ and any graph $G$ of minimum degree at least $d$, $G$ contains a subdivision of $H$. We verify this in the case $H$ is $P_6^3$ and $P_7^3$
The Bermond-Thomassen conjecture states that, for any positive integer $r$, a digraph of minimum out-degree at least $2r-1$ contains at least $r$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles. Bessy, Sereni and Lichiardopol proved that a regular tournament $T$ of minimum degree $2r-1$ contains at least $r$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles, which shows that the above conjecture is true for tournaments. After that, Lichiardopol improved this result by showing that a $2r-1$-regular tournament contains at least $\frac{7}{6}r-\frac{7}{3}$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles. In this paper, we will extend the result t…
In this paper, we proceed on determining the minimum $q_{min}$ among the connected nonbipartite graphs on $n\geq 5$ vertices and with domination number $\frac{n+1}{3}<γ\leq \frac{n-1}{2}$. Further results obtained are as follows: $\mathrm{(i)}$ among all nonbipartite connected graph of order $n\geq 5$ and with domination number $\frac{n-1}{2}$, the minimum $q_{min}$ is completely determined; $\mathrm{(ii)}$ among all nonbipartite graphs of order $n\geq 5$, with odd-girth $g_{o}\leq5$ and domination number at least $\frac{n+1}{3}<γ\leq \frac{n-2}{2}$, the minimum $q_{min}$ is completely determi…
In 1990 Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp proved that for $k\geq 2$, every graph with $n\geq k+1$ vertices and $(k-1)(n-k+2)+\binom{k-2}{2}+1$ edges contains a subgraph of minimum degree $k$ on at most $n-\sqrt{n}/\sqrt{6k^3}$ vertices. They conjectured that it is possible to remove at least $ε_k n$ many vertices and remain with a subgraph of minimum degree $k$, for some $ε_k>0$. We make progress towards their conjecture by showing that one can remove at least $Ω(n/\log n)$ many vertices.
We prove that, for sufficiently large $n$, every graph of order $n$ with minimum degree at least $0.852n$ has a fractional edge-decomposition into triangles. We do this by refining a method used by Dross to establish a bound of $0.9n$. By a result of Barber, Kühn, Lo and Osthus, our result implies that, for each $ε>0$, every graph of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum degree at least $(0.852+ε)n$ has a triangle decomposition if and only if it has all even degrees and number of edges a multiple of three.
Pokrovskiy conjectured that there is a function $f: \mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ such that any $2k$-strongly-connected tournament with minimum out and in-degree at least $f(k)$ is $k$-linked. In this paper, we show that any $(2k+1)$-strongly-connected tournament with minimum out-degree at least some polynomial in $k$ is $k$-linked, thus resolving the conjecture up to the additive factor of $1$ in the connectivity bound, but without the extra assumption that the minimum in-degree is large. Moreover, we show the condition on high minimum out-degree is necessary by constructing arbitrarily …
An antimagic labeling of a directed graph $D$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to the integers $\{1, \cdots, m\}$ such that all $n$ oriented vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where an oriented vertex sum is the sum of labels of all arcs entering that vertex minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving it. A graph $G$ has an antimagic orientation if it has an orientation which admits an antimagic labeling. Hefetz, M{ü}tze, and Schwartz conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper, we show that every bipartite grap…
For a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, define the minimum positive codegree $δ_i^+(\mathcal{H})$ to be the largest integer $k$ such that every $i$-set which is contained in at least one edge of $\mathcal{H}$ is contained in at least $k$ edges. For $1\le s\le k,t$ and $t\le r$, we prove that for $n$-vertex $t$-intersecting $r$-graphs $\mathcal{H}$ with $δ_{r-s}^+(\mathcal{H})>{k-1\choose s}$, the unique hypergraph with the maximum number of edges is the hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ consisting of every edge which intersects a set of size $2k-2s+t$ in at least $k-s+t$ vertices provided $n$ is sufficiently l…
A complex unit gain graph (or ${\mathbb T}$-gain graph) is a triple $Φ=(G, {\mathbb T}, φ)$ (or $(G, φ)$ for short) consisting of a simple graph $G$, as the underlying graph of $(G, φ)$, the set of unit complex numbers $\mathbb{T}= \{ z \in C:|z|=1 \}$ and a gain function $φ: \overrightarrow{E} \rightarrow \mathbb{T}$ with the property that $φ(e_{i,j})=φ(e_{j,i})^{-1}$. In this paper, we prove that $2m(G)-2c(G) \leq r(G, φ) \leq 2m(G)+c(G)$, where $r(G, φ)$, $m(G)$ and $c(G)$ are the rank of the Hermitian adjacency matrix $H(G, φ)$, the matching number and the cyclomatic number of $G$, respect…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $γ_{R}(G)$ and $\partial (G)$ denote the Roman domination number and the differential of $G,$ respectively. In this paper we prove that for any integer $k\geq 0$, if $G$ is a graph of order $n\geq 6k+9$, minimum degree $δ\geq 2,$ which does not contain any induced $\{C_{5},C_{8},\ldots ,C_{3k+2}\}$% -cycles, then $γ_{R}(G)\leq \frac{(4k+8)n}{6k+11}$. This bound is an improvement of the bounds given in [E.W. Chambers, B. Kinnersley, N. Prince, and D.B. West, Extremal problems for Roman domination, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009) 1575--1586] when $k…
Among all simple nonbipartite 2-connected graphs and among all nonbipartite $θ$-graphs, the minimum least $Q$-eigenvalues are completely determined, respectively.
Erdős determined the maximum size of a nonhamiltonian graph of order $n$ and minimum degree at least $k$ in 1962. Recently, Ning and Peng generalized. Erdős' work and gave the maximum size $h(n,c,k)$ of graphs with prescribed order $n$, circumference $c$ and minimum degree at least $k.$ But for some triples $n,c,k,$ the maximum size is not attained by a graph of minimum degree $k.$ For example, $h(15,14,3)=77$ is attained by a unique graph of minimum degree $7,$ not $3.$ In this paper we obtain more precise information by determining the maximum size of a graph with prescribed order, circumfer…
A note on complete subdivisions in digraphs of large outdegree
Two subgraphs $A,B$ of a graph $G$ are anticomplete if they are vertex-disjoint and there are no edges joining them. Is it true that if $G$ is a graph with bounded clique number, and sufficiently large chromatic number, then it has two anticomplete subgraphs, both with large chromatic number? This is a question raised by El-Zahar and Erdős in 1986, and remains open. If so, then at least there should be two anticomplete subgraphs both with large minimum degree, and that is one of our results. We prove two variants of this. First, a strengthening: we can ask for one of the two subgraphs to have …
