We discuss two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to conformal matter and fixed area in a semiclassical large and negative matter central charge limit. In this setup the gravity theory -- otherwise highly fluctuating -- admits a round two-sphere saddle. We discuss the two-sphere partition function up to two-loop order from the path integral perspective. This amounts to studying Feynman diagrams incorporating the fixed area constraint on the round two-sphere. In particular we find that all ultraviolet divergences cancel to this order. We compare our results with the two-sphere partition function obtained from the DOZZ formula.
We consider sphere partition functions of TT deformed large N conformal field theories in d=2,3,4,5 and 6 dimensions, computed using the flow equation. These are shown to non-perturbatively match with bulk computations of $AdS_{d+1}$ with a finite radial cut-off. We then demonstrate how the flow equation can be independently derived from a regularization procedure in defining TT operators through a local Callan-Symanzik equation. Finally, we show that the sphere partition functions, modulo bulk-counterterm contributions, can be reproduced from Wheeler-DeWitt wave functions.
We compute the sphere and disk partition functions in semiclassical Liouville and analogous quantities in double-scaled matrix integrals. The quantity sphere/disk^2 is unambiguous and we find a precise numerical match between the Liouville answer and the matrix integral answer. An application is to show that the sphere partition function in JT gravity is infinite.
We consider spherically symmetric and static charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell gravities in general $D\ge 5$ dimensions and study their photon spheres and black hole shadows. We show that they all satisfy the sequence of inequalities recently proposed relating a black hole's horizon, photon sphere, shadow and its mass.
In this note we point out that the one-loop partition function of three-dimensional flat gravity, computed along the lines originally developed for the anti-de Sitter case, reproduces characters of the BMS3 group.
We evaluate the 1-loop partition function of conformal gravity in four dimensions around an $AdS_4$ background, using the heat kernel techniques. We give expressions for the relevant thermodynamical quantities and compare our results with the ones from the literature.
The one-loop partition function of the $f(R,R_{μν}R^{μν})$ gravity theory is obtained around AdS$_4$ background. After suitable choice of the gauge condition and computation of the ghost determinant, we obtain the one-loop partition function of the theory. The traced heat kernel over the thermal quotient of AdS$_4$ space is also computed and the thermal partition function is obtained for this theory. We have then consider quantum corrections to the thermodynamical quantities in some special cases.
The graviton 1-loop partition function in Euclidean topologically massive gravity (TMG) is calculated using heat kernel techniques. The partition function does not factorize holomorphically, and at the chiral point it has the structure expected from a logarithmic conformal field theory. This gives strong evidence for the proposal that the dual conformal field theory to TMG at the chiral point is indeed logarithmic. We also generalize our results to new massive gravity.
We study the partition function of odd-dimensional conformal field theories placed on spheres with a squashed metric. We establish that the round sphere provides a local extremum for the free energy which, in general, is not a global extremum. In addition, we show that the leading quadratic correction to the free energy around this extremum is proportional to the coefficient, $C_T$, determining the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT. For three-dimensional CFTs, we compute explicitly this proportionality constant for a class of squashing deformations which preserve an $…
We calculate the one loop partition function for topologically massive higher spin gravity (TMHSG) for arbitrary spin by taking the spin-3 TMHSG action constructed in arXiv:1107.0915 and subsequently generalising it for an arbitrary spin. We find that the final result can be put into a product form which cannot be holomorphically factorized giving strong evidence that the topologically massive higher spin gravity is dual to a high spin extension of logarithmic CFT rather than a chiral one.
In this paper we consider spherically symmetric interior spacetimes filled by anisotropic fluids in the context of Hořava gravity and Einstein-aether theory. We assume a specific non-static configuration of the aether vector field and show that the field equations admit a family of exact analytical solutions which can be obtained if one of the two metric coefficients is assigned. We study as an illustrative example the case in which the metric of the interior spacetime reproduces the Newtonian potential of a fluid sphere with constant density.
We consider extremal correlation functions, involving arbitrary number of BPS (chiral or twisted chiral) operators and exactly one anti-BPS operator in 2D N=(2,2) theories. These correlators define the structure constants in the rings generated by the BPS operators with their operator product expansions. We present a way of computing these correlators from the sphere partition function of a deformed theory using localization. Relating flat space and sphere correlators is nontrivial due to operator mixing on the sphere induced by conformal anomaly. We discuss the supergravitational source of th…
We calculate the gravity one-loop partition function of three-dimensional parity even tricritical gravity. Agreement with logarithmic conformal field theory single-particle partition functions on the field theory side is found and we furthermore discover a partially massless limit of linearized six-derivative parity even gravity. Then we define a "truncation" of the critical theory, at the level of the partition function, by calculating black hole determinants via summation over quasi-normal mode spectra and discriminating against those modes which are not present in the physical spectrum. Thi…
While the Euclidean two-dimensional gravitational path integral is in general highly fluctuating, it admits a semiclassical two-sphere saddle if coupled to a matter CFT with large and positive central charge. In Weyl gauge this gravity theory is known as timelike Liouville theory, and is conjectured to be a non-unitary two-dimensional CFT. We explore the semiclassical limit of timelike Liouville theory by calculating the two-sphere partition function from the perspective of the path integral to three-loop order, extending the work in 2106.01665. We also compare our result to the conjectured al…
We argue that the conjectural relation between the subleading term in the small-squashing expansion of the free energy of general three-dimensional CFTs on squashed spheres and the stress-tensor three-point charge $t_4$ proposed in arXiv:1808.02052: $F_{\mathbb{S}^3_{\varepsilon}}^{(3)}(0)=\frac{1}{630}π^4 C_{\scriptscriptstyle T} t_4$, holds for an infinite family of holographic higher-curvature theories. Using holographic calculations for quartic and quintic Generalized Quasi-topological gravities and general-order Quasi-topological gravities, we identify an analogous analytic relation betwe…
We perform a resurgence analysis of the $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons partition function on a Brieksorn homology sphere $Σ(2,5,7)$. Starting from an exact Chern-Simons partition function, we study the Borel resummation of its perturbative expansion.
We study N = 4 quiver theories on the three-sphere. We compute partition functions using the localisation method by Kapustin et al. solving exactly the matrix integrals at finite N, as functions of mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. We find a simple explicit formula for the partition function of the quiver tail T(SU(N)). This formula opens the way for the analysis of star-shaped quivers and their mirrors (that are the Gaiotto-type theories arising from M5 branes on punctured Riemann surfaces). We provide non-perturbative checks of mirror symmetry for infinite classes of theories and find th…
The graviton 1-loop partition function is calculated for Euclidean generalised massive gravity (GMG) using AdS heat kernel techniques. We find that the results fit perfectly into the AdS/(L)CFT picture. Conformal Chern-Simons gravity, a singular limit of GMG, leads to an additional contribution in the 1-loop determinant from the conformal ghost. We show that this contribution has a nice interpretation on the conformal field theory side in terms of a semi-classical null vector at level two descending from a primary with conformal weights (3/2,-1/2).
We study the finite part of the sphere partition function of d-dimensional Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) as a function of exactly marginal couplings. In odd dimensions, this quantity is physical and independent of the exactly marginal couplings. In even dimensions, this object is generally regularization scheme dependent and thus unphysical. However, in the presence of additional symmetries, the partition function of even-dimensional CFTs can become physical. For two-dimensional N=(2,2) supersymmetric CFTs, the continuum partition function exists and computes the Kahler potential on the chir…
Recently it has been shown that the two-sphere partition function of a gauged linear sigma model of a Calabi-Yau manifold yields the exact quantum Kahler potential of the Kahler moduli space of that manifold. Since four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories can be engineered by non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds, this implies that it is possible to obtain exact gauge theory Kahler potentials from two-sphere partition functions. In this paper, we demonstrate that the Seiberg-Witten Kahler potential can indeed be obtained as a two-sphere partition function. To be precise, we extract the quantum Kahler m…
Motivated by recent works on the connection between 2D quantum gravity and timelike Liouville theory, we revisit the latter and clarify some aspects of the computation of its partition function: We present a detailed computation of the Liouville partition function on the fluctuating sphere at finite values of the central charge. The results for both the spacelike theory and the timelike theory are given, and their properties analyzed. We discuss the derivation of the partition function from the DOZZ formula, its derivation using the Coulomb gas approach, a semiclassical computation of it using…
We present several results concerning the free energy of odd-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) on squashed spheres. First, we propose a formula which computes this quantity for holographic CFTs dual to higher-curvature gravities with second-order linearized equations of motion. As opposed to standard on-shell action methods for Taub geometries, our formula is automatically UV-finite and only involves a simple evaluation of the corresponding bulk Lagrangian on an auxiliary pure-AdS space. The expression is closely related to the function determining the possible AdS vacua of the bulk …
Algebraic aspects of the computation of partition functions for quantum gravity and black holes in $AdS_3$ are discussed. We compute the sub-leading quantum corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. It is shown that the quantum corrections to the classical result can be included systematically by making use of the comparison with conformal field theory partition functions, via the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence. This leads to a better understanding of the role of modular and spectral functions, from the point of view of the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Besides…
Motivated by the prospect of constraining microscopic models, we calculate the exact one-loop corrected de Sitter entropy (the logarithm of the sphere partition function) for every effective field theory of quantum gravity, with particles in arbitrary spin representations. In doing so, we universally relate the sphere partition function to the quotient of a quasi-canonical bulk and a Euclidean edge partition function, given by integrals of characters encoding the bulk and edge spectrum of the observable universe. Expanding the bulk character splits the bulk (entanglement) entropy into quasinor…
Some general properties of perturbed (rational) CFT in the background metric of symmetric 2D sphere of radius $R$ are discussed, including conformal perturbation theory for the partition function and the large $R$ asymptotic. The truncated conformal space scheme is adopted to treat numerically perturbed rational CFT's in the spherical background. Numerical results obtained for the scaling Lee-Yang model lead to the conclusion that the partition function is an entire function of the coupling constant. Exploiting this analytic structure we are able to describe rather precisely the ``experimental…
In Newtonian theory, gravity inside a constant density static sphere is independent of spacetime dimension. Interestingly this general result is also carried over to Einsteinian as well as higher order Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (Lovelock) gravity notwithstanding their nonlinearity. We prove that the necessary and sufficient condition for universality of Schwarzschild interior solution describing a uniform density sphere for all $n\geq4$ is that its density is constant.
Gravity on noncommutative analogues of compact spaces can give a finite mode truncation of ordinary commutative gravity. We obtain the actions for gravity on the noncommutative two-sphere and on the noncommutative ${\bf CP}^2$ in terms of finite dimensional $(N\times N)$-matrices. The commutative large $N$ limit is also discussed.
In this paper we briefly review the main idea of the localization technique and its extension suitable in supersymmetric gauge field theory. We analyze the partition function of the vector multiplets with supercharges and its blocks on the even- and odd-dimensional spheres and squashed spheres. We exploit so-called Faà di Bruno's formula and show that multipartite partition functions can be written in the form of expansion series of the Bell polynomials. Applying the restricted specialization argument we show that $q$-infinite-product representation of partition functions admits presentation i…

We show that there are 2 equivalent first order descriptions of 2+1 gravity with non-zero cosmological constant. One is the well-known spacetime description and the other is in terms of evolving conformal geometry. The key tool that links these pictures is Cartan geometry, a generalization of Riemannian geometry that allows for geometries locally modelled off arbitrary homogeneous spaces. The two different interpretations suggest two distinct phase space reductions. The spacetime picture leads to the 2+1 formulation of General Relativity due to Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner while the conformal p…
Corrections to Newton's inverse law have been so far considered, but not clear in warped higher dimensional worlds, because of complexity of the Einstein equation. Here we give a model of a warped 6D world with an extra 2D sphere. We take a general energy-momentum tensor, which does not depend on a special choice of bulk matter fields. The 6D Einstein equation reduces to the spheroidal differential equation, which can be easily solved. The gravitational potential in our 4D universe is calculated to be composed of infinite series of massive Yukawa potentials coming from the KK mode, together wi…
We push forward the investigation of holographic dualities in 3D quantum gravity formulated as a topological quantum field theory, studying the correspondence between boundary and bulk structures. Working with the Ponzano-Regge topological state-sum model defining an exact discretization of 3d quantum gravity, we analyze how the partition function for a solid twisted torus depends on the boundary quantum state. This configuration is relevant to the AdS${}_{3}$/CFT${}_{2}$ correspondence. We introduce boundary spin network states with coherent superposition of spins on a square lattice on the b…
Based on the construction by Hosomichi, Seong and Terashima we consider N=1 supersymmetric 5D Yang-Mills theory with matter on a five-sphere with radius r. This theory can be thought of as a deformation of the theory in flat space with deformation parameter r and this deformation preserves 8 supercharges. We calculate the full perturbative partition function as a function of r/g^2, where g is the Yang-Mills coupling, and the answer is given in terms of a matrix model. We perform the calculation using localization techniques. We also argue that in the large N-limit of this deformed 5D Yang-Mill…
Three dimensional Euclidean pure gravity with a negative cosmological constant can be formulated in terms of the Chern-Simons theory, classically. This theory can be written in a supersymmetric way by introducing auxiliary gauginos and scalars. We calculate the exact partition function of this Chern-Simons theory by using the localization technique. Thus, we obtain the quantum gravity partition function, assuming that it can be obtained non-perturbatively by summing over partition functions of the Chern-Simons theory on topologically different manifolds. The resultant partition function is mod…
The sphere partition function of Calabi-Yau gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) has been shown to compute the exact Kaehler potential of the Kaehler moduli space of a Calabi-Yau. We propose a universal expression for the sphere partition function evaluated in hybrid phases of Calabi-Yau GLSMs that are fibrations of Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds over some base manifold. Special cases include Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric ambient spaces and Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The key ingredients that enter the expression are Givental's I/J-functions, the Gamma class and further data associated to…
We propose an action for gravity on a fuzzy sphere, based on a matrix model. We find striking similarities with an analogous model of two dimensional gravity on a noncommutative plane, i.e. the solution space of both models is spanned by pure U(2) gauge transformations acting on the background solution of the matrix model, and there exist deformations of the classical diffeomorphisms which preserve the two-dimensional noncommutative gravity actions.
It is known that not all summation methods are linear and stable. Zeta function regularization is in general non-linear. However, in some cases formal manipulations with "zeta function" regularization (assuming linearity of sums) lead to correct results. We consider several examples and show why this happens.
In this paper we describe an approach to construct semiclassical partition functions in gravity which are complete in the sense that they contain a complete description of the differentiable structures of the underlying 4-manifold. In addition, we find our construction naturally includes cosmic strings. We discuss some possible applications of the partition functions in the fields of both quantum gravity and topological string theory
Partition functions of N=2 theories on the squashed 3-sphere have been recently shown to localise to matrix integrals. By explicitly evaluating the matrix integral we show that abelian partition functions can be expressed as a sum of products of two blocks. We identify the first block with the partition function of the vortex theory, with equivariant parameter hbar=2 Pi i b^2, defined on R^2 x S_1 corresponding to the b->0 degeneration of the ellipsoid. The second block gives the partition function of the vortex theory with equivariant parameter hbar^L=2 Pi i/b^2, on the dual R^2 x S_1 corresp…
We compute the heat kernel for the Laplacians of symmetric transverse traceless fields of arbitrary spin on the $AdS$ background in even number of dimensions using the group theoretic approach introduced in \cite{Gopakumar:2011qs} and apply it on the partition function of six dimensional conformal gravity. The obtained partition function consists of the Einstein gravity, conformal ghost and two modes that contain mass.
We give a direct path-integral calculation of the partition function for pure 3+1 dimensional U(N) Yang-Mills theory at large N on a small three-sphere, up to two-loop order in perturbation theory. From this, we calculate the one-loop shift in the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature for the theory at small volume, finding that it increases (in units of the inverse sphere radius) as we go to larger coupling (larger volume). Our results also allow us to read off the sum of one-loop anomalous dimensions for all operators with a given engineering dimension in planar Yang-Mills theory on R^4. As che…
We prove a recent conjecture that the partition function of N=(2, 2) gauge theories on the two-sphere which flow to Calabi-Yau sigma models in the infrared computes the exact Kahler potential on the quantum Kahler moduli space of the corresponding Calabi-Yau. This establishes the two-sphere partition function as a new method of computation of worldsheet instantons and Gromov-Witten invariants. We also calculate the exact two-sphere partition function for N=(2,2) Landau-Ginzburg models with an arbitrary twisted superpotential W. These results are used to demonstrate that arbitrary abelian gauge…
Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be considered as giving viable alternatives to General Relativity.
We evaluate an analogue of an integral of Dirichlet over the sphere S^D, but with an integrand that is independent of [(D + 1)/2] Killing coordinates. As an application, we evaluate an integral that arises when comparing a conformal fluid on S^D and black holes in (D + 2)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime.
There has been renewed interest in the path-integral computation of the partition function of AdS3 gravity, both in the metric and Chern-Simons formulations. The one-loop partition function around Euclidean AdS3 turns out to be given by the vacuum character of Virasoro group. This stems from the work of Brown and Henneaux (BH) who showed that, in AdS3 gravity with sensible asymptotic boundary conditions, an infinite group of (improper) diffeomorphisms arises which acts canonically on phase space as two independent Virasoro symmetries. The gauge group turns out to be composed of so-called ``pro…
We define a squashed four-sphere by a dimensional reduction of a twisted S^4 x S^1, and construct explicitly a supersymmetric Yang-Mills action on it. The action includes a non-trivial dilaton factor and a theta term with a non-constant theta. The partition function of this theory is calculated using the localization technique. The resulting partition function can be written in the form consistent with the AGT relation due to the non-constant theta term. The parameter b which characterizes the partition function in this form is not restricted to be real for the squashed four-sphere.
We propose a generalisation of the $T \bar{T}$ deformation to curved spaces by defining, and solving, a suitable flow equation for the partition function. We provide evidence it is well-defined at the quantum level. This proposal identifies, for any CFT, the $T \bar{T}$ deformed partition function and a certain wavefunction of 3d quantum gravity. This connection, true for any $c$, is not a holographic duality --- the 3d theory is a "fake bulk." We however emphasise that this reduces to the known holographic connection in the classical limit. Concretely, this means the deformed partition functi…
Lattice actions and amplitudes that perfectly mirror continuum physics are known as perfect discretizations. Such perfect discretizations naturally preserve the symmetries of the continuum. This is a key concern for general relativity, where diffeomorphism symmetry and dynamics are deeply connected, and diffeomorphisms play a crucial role in quantization. In this work we construct for the first time a perfect discretizations for four-dimensional linearized gravity. We show how the perfect discretizations do lead to a straightforward construction of the one-loop quantum corrections for manifold…
We analyze aspects of the holographic principle relevant to the quantum gravity partition functions in Euclidean sector of AdS$_3$. The sum of the known contributions to the partitions functions can be presented exactly, including corrections, in the form where the Patterson-Selberg zeta function involves.
We show that a recently conjectured form for perturbative supersymmetric partition functions on spheres of general dimension $d$ is consistent with the flat space limit of 6-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills. We also show that the partition functions for $\mathcal{N}=1$ 8- and 9-dimensional theories are consistent with their known flat space limits.
Gauge theories in the presence of codimension two vortex defects are known to be related to the theories on orbifolds. By using this relation we study the localized path integrals of 2D N=(2,2) SUSY gauge theories with point-like vortex defects. We present a formula for the correlation functions of vortex defects inserted at the north and the south poles of squashed spheres. For Abelian gauge theories the correlators are locally constant as functions of the parameters of the defect, but exhibit discontinuity at some threshold values determined by the deficit angle at the poles and the R-charge…
